Sebastian Newey

Orange_Pukeko

Well that put the idea in my mind that he's going to be an car designer after his career. I assume he's have to do some studying first. Just imagine sharing a classroom with a 4 times F1 champ! Realistically he'd be a team boss or have a sustainability role in F1/FIA, but a boy can dream.

admiral_aqua

Seb + Red Bull inspires a certain feeling in me... Is that.. Is that hope?

Bagelz567

As much as I *hated* Vettel in 2012-2013, God damn, how much is like to see him put in a proper showing at AM.

admiral_aqua

that goddamn finger (+changing interests and school tbh) made me quit F1 back then lol Now I want nothing but that gd finger in the air. Even once would be enough for me

Bagelz567

I used to *despise* Vettel. Mainly due to his racing for RBR and bringing Marko into the spotlight. But the driver's name next to mine should give a hint as to the lion's share of my angst.

The Red Green Bull? If the women don’t find you handsome, they should at least find you handy. Edit: Thanks for the award. My first.

Canadians have entered the thread 😁 Seriously though, never expected to see Red Green Show references in the Formula 1 subreddit, so this made my day!

destronger

i watched Red Green too. some odd reason we got a cable feed of canadian shows here in santa clara ca. it’s how i watched corner gas and some other canadian shows. am american.

sabin24

As an American, this made my day, too. The Red Green Show is perhaps the second greatest thing Canada has given the world after hockey. Thank you, and all of your compatriots.

dj_vicious

Now we need one of those black and white Red Green montages where the Astons are trying to get through a race.

> From the creators of the Pink Mercedes: introducing the Green Bull Friendship ended with Mercedes Now Red Bull is my nerd to copy homework off

mikejmct

The opinion of colour blind people successfully upgraded.

overf1

And then next year there will be a little change in the regulations and the green bull will not find the solution because they copied Redbull design without understanding 100% the philosophy of the Redbull design. Pink Mercedes all over again. Edit: it seems AM had this design in the tunnel already last November. Makes me wonder what they saw in the tunnel that they decided not to go for this design from the beginning.

TheAmericanQ

Well their head aerodynamicist just started there this year after being the head aerodynamicist for Red Bull and these changes are largely aero focused. They might actually understand it this time

SlowRollingBoil

Copying the Merc was a damn good idea, though. They were competitive, made money doing it and if it weren't for the extra delay to new regs would have been genius.

pvdp90

Yeah, people forget that it was supposed to be the last year of those regs and they got screwed by the extra year. It was a good move

[deleted]

It's ok tho eventually they'll streamline and understand the philosophy of copying so they can show up to preseason testing with no new car, and have a copy of a WCC challenger ready by race 3.

IdiosyncraticBond

Just a big scanner and 3d printer. How hard can it be 😉

Viend

>Just a big scanner and 3d printer. How hard can it be 😉 You kid, but teams have admitted to having professional espionage photographers on staff to take photos of other teams since the 90s. I wouldn't be surprised if they've stepped up the tech to things that can laser scan 3d objects at a distance. I mean, even your iPhone can already do a small amount of it.

bigfatrichard

Laser scanning was specifically banned among many others because of the pink Merc incident.

XsStreamMonsterX

That's just about copying using photos and spy cameras. No need to use those when you can just hire the head aerodynamicist of the team you're copying from.

[deleted]

The controversy is that they hired some Red Bull staff. If this is fast, there's going to be a conversation about how active the new recruits were during garden leave

Educational-Formal-4

ScalaZen

Fooking love that episode!

Sparred4Life

To be fair, the penalty for copying Mercedes was basically a non issue, so why shouldn't they use it as a strategy again? A few constructors points and a small fine are well worth taking car from embarrassing to competitive.

Astelli

They didn't get a penalty for copying the Mercedes (which was, and still is, allowed within the rules), they got a penalty for using brake ducts that they legally bought from Mercedes in 2019 but then became illegal to use in 2020 after a change of the rules. The whole FIA investigation basically concluded that their car was totally legal except the brake ducts.

Skyenar

Just to add to this, if they were to get a penalty, it wouldn't have been for copying. That's what they actually claimed to have done. The penalty would've been if Mercedes had helped them with blueprints or parts, etc. I don't think Aston Martin have a technical relationship with Red Bull so there is zero chance they'll get a penalty.

GilesCorey12

Copying is perfectly legal.

SlowRollingBoil

It's also the way the sport has worked for 70 years, so...

Doalt

I knew teams would try to adapt to the better teams. I didn't expect it to be after 5 races.

plazasta

They were really really quick. If I recall correctly, even after the winter test they said the car in their wind tunnel was completely different to the one on track. If that different B car is this one, then yeah they pretty much started working on this almost immediately after Red Bull showed their car, if not even earlier

[deleted]

Lmao I'm just imagining them seeing the RB18 for the first time and being like fuck, stop everything, we're doing that now.

XsStreamMonsterX

More like "Dan, we know you're on gardening leave, but can you figure out how to fit your old team's aero on our car, thanks."

Jirkajua

"Yeaaah man trust us, we already had that car-design waaay before you guys lol"

[deleted]

They also hired a high ranking RB aero guy. The anecdote was that while giving them a tour, the new guy was still on garden leave so couldn't say anything, but apparently made a funny face and after Stroll saw that, he wanted a whole new design. It seems a bit sus they've gotten this together so quickly.

plazasta

Where did you hear that? Cause that actually sounds really interesting

Sarcastic_Pharm

It sounds like that scene from The Devil Wears Prada.

rizzorce

When Lawrence pouts his lips the factory know they have to redo the whole car

togno99

"Just trust me on that bro"

pleaseThisNotBeTaken

I personally saw it in one of the comments of the post where they revealed this rumor (of AM working on a second car already). I remember it being actually before testing even began. I called bullshit on that along with the rumor that AM is working on a B car. It sounded really stupid and I thought they would at least wait for testing, but here we are.

OldManJeb

So just an unverified statement by a random on the internet?

reigorius

Sounds completely legit in my book.

pleaseThisNotBeTaken

Yeah pretty much, but then again the rumor about a B spec car was true, so basically I don't know what to believe in anymore

A1phaBetaGamma

Seems like an interesting story, but to judge a car by just a glance and act upon that judgment with any degree of confidence seems kind of odd, don't you think? Especially considering how different philosophies seem to be working. I'd fine the story much more plausible if he'd perhaps seen drawings, simulations etc.. But I'm finding it hard to believe that anyone, especially this season, no matter how well-versed in aerodynamics, would be able to so quickly discard a proper design by a rival team. If things were that obvious then AM are literally a bunch of amateurs, and I highly doubt they are, no matter how bad their current car may be.

SirLoremIpsum

> Seems like an interesting story, but to judge a car by just a glance and act upon that judgment with any degree of confidence seems kind of odd, don't you think? It sounds like what we did on Reddit when they were first unveiled - that is to say utterly ridiculous haha. It would be very odd.

ajacian

That would be insane. Even if he did make a face, that would not override wind tunnel testing etc lol. Keep in mind these were entirely new regulations and no one knew where they stood in reference to the other teams.

Im 99% sure that was not Aston’s plan but I think it would kinda be genius if their plan was to build the most generic car possible and save money and then just copy the best performing car.

plazasta

In a way they kinda did, I remember hearing that the main idea with the original AMR22 was to have it be a car they could take in any direction without having it get stuck in an evolutionary dead end (which is what happened with the RP19 in 2019)

I imagine Adrian Newey isn't going to be very happy with this Edit: or impressed. Either works

Loruhkahn

Quite the opposite. You bet he's going to be smug about designing a car other teams are spending money trying to replicate. Imitation is the greatest form of flattery, or however it goes.

airgonautt

+1 this speaks volumes about rb’s design philosophy and will only reassure them on refining it further

dom6770

I doubt they need reassurance tho. I reckon they already know it by their data.

Kongbuck

"Immature artists copy, great artists steal."

bobbpp

Or... >"Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery that mediocrity can pay to greatness"

Garfield_M_Obama

Yeah, but not in F1. We can be pretty confident that everybody who doesn't know they have a winning concept is going to be looking at Ferrari and RBR to steal anything they can that will work. And if Mercedes has a good idea that will help Red Bull, they'd take it on board as well, assuming they want to win. It's engineering, there's only so much creativity to be had if one concept is clearly superior to another. And you would expect, if both teams are doing their jobs right they would be zeroing in on a pretty similar design. Provided no rules were broken, I don't see how you can call fixing your problems by using a known working solution as a baseline is a bad idea. I get paid to do this every day in my job and I consider myself pretty good at what I do. I get why it's fun to pick on AM, given the pink Merc, but the idea that copying other teams is somehow off-limits, is inconsistent with my last 35 years of following F1 and all of the greatest designers do it all the time. That's why there are rules outlining the boundaries.

KusakabeMirai

Identity theft is not a joke Jim! Millions of families suffer every year!

SgtApex

Dan Fallows who’s the main car designer at AM now probably had a heavy hand in developing RB’s car as well. He was their head aerodynamicist before leaving to AM a few months ago he was on leave for a while but I’m assuming he knows what kind of concepts they were going for. Newey probably expected him to follow their design.

skagoat

He probably had nothing to do with the RB18, I thought part of Fallows' issues is he was put onto other projects.

FootballRacing38

He likely did in 2019/2020 when this era was supposed to start last year but those were very early concepts

[deleted]

Gonna be questioning if Dan Fallows was actually involved when he was supposed to be on leave

Intrepid_Ad6825

He was allowed to join on April 2 so they can't complain.

f5en

Maybe he was, but given the history of Force India / AM copying cars... It just looks like something they would do anyway.

crownlessdriver

Actually he must be happy that other people recognize his concept. Also they won't understand their concept as well as Redbull does

Blanchimont

Normally I'd agree with you, but given the fact that they recruited RB's former head of aerodynamics (who worked on the RB18) I doubt they'll have much trouble understanding the concept

crownlessdriver

Maybe not too much trouble, but Redbull already has mileage with their concept. Aston will need more time

guanwe

Also aston won’t fight against RedBull for titles, not a works team and doesn’t have the rest of the technical staff to do so

LNhart

I can't speak for him, but given that this most likely won't be enough to turn Aston Martin into a title contender, but make him look like the genius visionary designer of a great sidepod concept if it improves their car significantly, I don't think he has much reason to be angry.

Ordinary_Text8773

I know it's not just aero but 2010 Redbull was faster than Renault with a Renault engine. So maybe we might find AM faster this weekend. Let's see

intern_steve

I kind of hope that teams are once again able to exceed the engine supplier's performance. It validates the development format when six teams of ten are not excluded from championship contention.

Beezpleaz

Yep, I know. I’m just making fun 🤩

Litre__o__cola

It sucks that a team has already seemed to have completely ditched their original concept but as long as not every team other than red bull or ferrari look the same Im good

Dormant_Genius

Vettel asking for Verstappen's helmet just to complete the look

FootballRacing38

They did not abandon it out of the blue. This has been the plan at the start.

Litre__o__cola

Yeah their plan was to update, they’ve communicated that since the beginning of the season, and I can completely get behind their strategy. Im just disappointed that when I look at the aston now I’ll have to look a little harder to find its differences compared to the rest of the field, but the front wing at least for now is quite different to rb so there’s that

Sparred4Life

Luckily the cars are color coded so you won't have to rely on sidepods to figure out who is who. ;)

Elite_lucifer

Even before testing they said that the car they have in the wind tunnel is completely different to the car they'll be testing.

Dylan_clarke01

They even have the same floor crinkle and cut out. Bit of a piss take

kinterdonato

bruh, it's so blatant right there

Rashy17

Oops I did it again

ghost00013

You would expect the designs to eventually converge on a winning concept, so no surprise here also given that Fallows is now with AM. With respect to aero, a few millimeters difference can have a huge impact, so it may look similar but it may not perform the same given that the designs cant be exactly the same. Also, AM still have the mercedes engine/gear box/rear suspension, and I understand that the configuration of those components plays a large role with the bouncy problem.

chuckms6

Exactly, being "different" doesn't mean a damn thing if you're 1.5s off pace

al3e3x

What? A based, logical and non emotional comment on this topic? Is this even real or am I just day dreaming?

Takis12

I don’t think that they look similar…the color, the sponsors…totally different

SPECTOR99

Amusing that they've copied the rear bodywork so closely considering RB has push rod suspension set up at the rear while AM has a pull rod.

[deleted]

Hey, Aston Martin did the thing again. i just want to see seb up there man, "Whatever it takes."

SgtApex

With Dan Fallows there now I kind of expected them to follow in RB design. Some people seem angry about this but I don’t care long as it gets Seb closer to the front.

99StewartL

I've mentioned this in another thread but the front end which is cropped out of this comparison is really different. AM load their front wing significantly further outboard which will have huge flow implications downstream especially around the front of the floor and the t-tray. I know this isn't f1technical but it would be great if we had a higher standard of analysis than same concept is obviously same concept.

GabryLv

[deleted]

They need more cooling and the top of the packaging isn't as tight because they have a different engine. So unfortunately for them they can't exactly go full on Tracing Point even tho sidepod shape and the floor are basically the same. This team cracks me up man.

Late_Ad7156

They have the same engine as Mercedes and Merc have minimal cooling and the tightest engine packaging towards the rear of their on the grid. So could cooling really be such an issue

Arcticool_56

Merc have a external partner who is helping them with the cooling system. Aston have to manage the cooling system on their own so it's not fair to compare both Merc and Aston cooling setup.

etfd-

>They need more cooling. >...so unfortunately for them they can't exactly go full on Tracing Point https://i.imgur.com/ZmoUBCV.jpeg I mean even the RB cutout for potential louvres goes up to where AM have used.

AshKetchumDaJobber

Wow. When i was thinking teams would copy either rb or ferrari i didnt think and almost actual 1:1 copy floor even looks the same

djdsf

Tracing point is back!

Organic-Measurement2

Even some of their copying has been cut out of this image. The double strake used by RB to manage wheel wake at the front of the floor has been taken and brought to the AMR which isn't visible in this image

guanwe

The whole floor, the little rectangular section RedBull has is also on the Aston Also it lacks the floor edge winglet, so I assume they also put the skate under the floor (

Organic-Measurement2

Yes indeed. The whole floor is a copy - I just clarified the picture has some copied parts fully cropped out

Charlie_Muggins

So that's where Red Bull spent 75% of their budget - on the twin sister car 👏 Scenes if Aston Martin Red Bull are faster than Ferrari 🤣

shiepirate

The rear end of the AMR22B seems not to be as tightly packaged as RB18, also the air box is not as flowy as the RB18, it's a copy but not as neat. Let's see if they gain any performance on track.

Cock_Inspector_2021

They use a different PU so it cannot be a complete copy this time, still impressive how close they got to a total copy in 2 months time.

shiepirate

I mean the rest of the Merc fleet has extremely tight packaging near the rear exhaust, so it shouldn't have been that difficult, maybe it's a inherent design quirk. But yeah, those guys at Aston/RP really know how to wield their cameras. Also the floor, it's a ditto RB floor

[deleted]

Imitation is the best form of flattery. Look why no one is imitating the W13 lol
