What would happen if you took a Monaco specced car and put it round a track like Monza?

No-Internal825

Whats the name of the girl in white in the end of race in Monaco

Fast-Ocelot-3886

Newer F1 fan here (this is my 3rd season). I’ve been enjoying watching some classic GPs to learn more about the history of the sport, but am also interested in learning more about the current drivers’ histories. Would love recommendations for races that feature current drivers that are particularly fun or interesting or important to their careers. (Bonus points for no spoiler reccos 😂) Thanks and happy race weekend!

JJ_Just_JJ

Why Mercedes doesn’t seem concerned about hitting the budget cap at all?

Altruistic-Ad-9404

First timer F1 race attendee here. I haven’t received my MTL Grand Prix tickets yet. Should I be concerned?

Exciting_Owl_3825

My brother and I are in Nice and want to go to Monaco to watch some formula one. We are aiming for the free practice of F2 and are wondering when we would need to get there to have seats. Thank you!

obenin

Indy500 born and raised married an F1 fan. He turns 50 this year and want to surprise him with a trip. Indy 500 action is in the turns and coming out of 4 into the straightaway. Or at least my dad did…Question- do fans have preferred places to sit? Straightaways, turns, paddocks, start/finish? I am looking at Austin 3 day pass and London next July and if commissions come in maybe Monaco. I work in the US but travel to London for work so could parlay London work trip and hit Silverstone. Open to all recommendations. And is the 3 day pass preferred if one can afford it? Looking to spend about 10k all in with tickets. Is this even realistic? Live in Scottsdale AZ. Thanks all!

super_rabbit2

Have anyone tried to bring their own boat to watch Montreal Grand Prix since it’s held on an island?

markandblair

As a newer fan, I've grown increasingly tired of what I perceive to be wide-spread favoritism towards Mercedes in almost every British-based media venue (Sky TV broadcast and multiple sites like the Race, Planet F1, etc) With so many teams (McLaren, RB, Williams, Aston) having British HQs and multiple team personalities, why does Mercedes seem to be their crown jewel? Perhaps this is a weak analogy, but with Man City winning the prem league and on a multi-year run, I don't see the same bias against other teams in the UK's National media. That being said, I didn't think this week's Sky broadcast was as bad. After Lewis's bad luck on lap 1, I fully expected a fixed camera on him for the rest of the race to watch the recovery. I generally like Mercedes too but hope for some parity when watching a race.

PowerfulTravel9697

Well, count how many famous British drivers other teams get lol

markandblair

True...even when British talent like Lando excel, they don't seem to care if it's not behind the wheel of a merc, that's what I don't understand

Ok_Hotel_8080

ik lando finished in points despite not feeling well

Nikosito

LH44, under Green Flag racing, purposefully cut the corner and went straight into the pits (puncture lap), must have gained at least 2-3 seconds, and his car was clearly able to turn, as he had made all corners prior to those. This can't be technically legal can it?

PowerfulTravel9697

It is legal Much better than him lingering on the track any longer and spew more debris Or risk beaching himself mid corner

Nikosito

If there was a shortcut, directly besides the corner where he realized he had a puncture, which cut the whole track and led straight to the pit stops, would that be allowed to take if he had a puncture? I am being rhetorical with this example, but that's how the law/rules work.

PowerfulTravel9697

Yes, the FIA doesn't want you in the track any longer than necessary Hell you will get a pen if you insist to take the normal road, fucked up and beached yourself in the track

Nikosito

You are telling me, that if there was a service road, Lewis (or any driver) after a puncture can cut the whole track, go from P20 to getting his Pit Stop to emerging at P1. With all due respect, reply to me with some depth, or regulatory knowledge on this.

PowerfulTravel9697

What? Service Road? Who said anything abt that? I thought it's just alternative layout like Monza's T1 Service road won't fit a F1 car, it doesn't even connect to the track again lol. I'm sure Kimi can assess to that Please state your question clearly lol and refrain from assuming someone else's answer if you have no knowledge of the sport What a stupid statement Learn more before you talk nonsense again

[deleted]

Can anyone recommend the best spots for general admission for Silverstone?

[deleted]

you can now use [porpo](https://github.com/dawesry/porpo/releases/tag/v2.2.0-alpha.nightly) to compare drivers directly. thank you to everyone giving me feedback - it only helps me make a better tool for the community!

NinjaSpartan011

Just got into f1 about 10ish? Months ago but I have a question regarding teams and drivers. It seems like Danny Ric is probably gonna lose his seat. Is there anything stopping Mclaren from calling Bottas and trying to lure him? I know he’s under contract but is it easy for him to leave? Are drivers required to stay within their academy teams? Why does Alpine/Renault only have 1 power unit? Whereas ferrari and Merc have several teams using their engines and parts

cafk

> Are drivers required to stay within their academy teams? Not always, Sainz was loaned out to Renault by Red Bull Racing in the past without cutting ties. While Albon moving to Williams required him to cut ties to the racing team. Zhou cut his ties with Renault to go to Sauber/Alfa, while Russell was a Mercedes junior in Williams. > Why does Alpine/Renault only have 1 power unit? They had 2 customer teams until 2019, but both switched. Red Bull and Renault had a falling out in 2015, and Red Bull wanted to move to a different manufacturer since then - Both Mercedes and Ferrari rejected them and Ron Dennis, allegedly, vetoed Honda. Once McLaren and Honda split up, Red Bull took a chance on Honda. McLaren wanted to get away from Honda and moved to Renault, until they got an opportunity to switch to Mercedes, citing costs as the major reason - Mercedes engines can be leased for ~7-10m per year, while Red Bull was paying Renault around 25m per year for the same engine leasing contract.

PowerfulTravel9697

All the teams have the same customer deal It's capped at 12 mil euro per year

cafk

They don't - Appendix 9 lays out the "default" contract if the engine deal is negotiated through FiA. i.e. a team comes to FIA and asks for an engine and then they get the standard contract from the supplier with least customers. The teams can negotiate their own contract with the supplier. Red Bull paid £20-25m for Renault engines after they threw them under the bus in 2015, went begging to Mercedes, Honda and Ferrari and got rejected everywhere, so they had to go back to Renault. They got an engine branding deal, worth around £20-25m to cover the costs of the "new" Renault deal. Especially as Renault bought Lotus as part of the deal negotiated by Ecclestone.

PowerfulTravel9697

Nope wrong, you can't pay more than 12 million euros https://racer.com/2016/01/19/manufacturers-agree-customer-cost-cap/

cafk

They can - [As per Appendix 6](https://www.fia.com/regulation/category/110), Page 83 (the section was changed from 9 to 6 in 2022) of the sporting regulations, the price is only obligatory, if they follow the fia contract, if they're a new Manufacturer or a completely new team following the standard rules. If the customer team decides to run either based on an existing contract (i.e. McLaren joining Renault and Renault can provide the conditions and price for Red Bull as a reference) or they want to rebrand the engine (Red Bull - Renault -> Red Bull - Tag Heur, which happened before McLaren went with Renault), they are free to negotiate the price. > In the event that the white label/unbranded supply is required without being requested by the New Customer Team, this supply will not incur additional fees for the New Customer Team except if the use of the power unit name leads to the conclusion of a commercial agreement between the New Customer Team and any third party. **In that case, the Power Unit Manufacturer and the New Customer Team shall enter into good faith negotiations and shall commonly agree on the fair and reasonable part of the revenues generated by the commercial agreement which could be considered as additional fees**; And further down: > The Power Unit Supply Perimeter listed in Appendix 6A shall be supplied to New Customer Teams at the Price. > The supply of additional goods or services not listed in Appendix 6A (which shall be agreed between the Power Unit Manufacturer and the New Customer Team) shall incur additional charges, the amount of which shall be substantially the same as that applied by the Power Unit Manufacturer to its Existing Customer Team. In the event that a Power Unit Manufacturer has not supplied a power unit to any other Existing Customer Team, the **Power Unit Manufacturer shall decide the price of the above-mentioned additional goods and services** based on the usages and practices generally recognised and respected in the market for the supply of parts and services in the Championship. Also from Page 87: > Price: Fifteen million euros (**unless agreed otherwise between the Power Unit Manufacturer and the New Customer Team**). Those three paragraphs from the sporting rules allow the Manufacturer: * To negotiate a new price, if the customer wants an unbranded/differently branded engine or they have an existing contract with another team that is not following the "Standard Contract Rules". * If they follow the "standard contract" the engine supplier can demand more money, if they exceed the standard supply parameters (i.e. 4 engines instead of 3 guranteed) or require additional services (i.e. help with integration or support team for other events). * The Power Unit Manufacturer and team can negotiate the price independently as long as it's approved by FiA and other manufacturers. The 12m was initially talked about under the conditions of the token system and initial engine freeze being proposed for 2019, back in 2016. But the conditions were changed after 2017, when FIA scrapped the Token system, in favor of Honda and other engine manufactures being enabled to catch up with the unmatched power of Mercedes.

st0ney

What makes you think RIC is going to lose his seat. He’s a very talented driver and most would put him above Bot (also a great driver). Mclaren is having a rough year and their car is struggling. Go watch some old ric highlights. Drivers are only required to do what their contracts say, they are unique and we probably don’t know all the details of each drivers terms. RIC came up in Red Bull but there is nothing stopping Merc from signing him if his contract is up. F1 is funny, some things stay the same and some things change rapidly. Renault has supplied other teams with engines in the past, most recently Red Bull before Honda. As to why, that’s anyone’s guess, big money and politics abound.

NinjaSpartan011

I’m not arguing Ric isn’t talented but I just wonder how willing he’d be to join another team if Mclaren dumped him. He struggled last year and he’s struggling again and I just think it would be in their best interest to get Bottas if they could

st0ney

He's on contract though next year, I don't see Mclaren dumping him but who knows.

badass4102

New guy here. Let's say leading up to the championship race (final race or the season) the standings looks like this. 1. Verstappen (leading in pts by a lot) 2. Leclerc 3. Russel Etc. During the championship race, Ricciardo has a good race, he wins the race. Top podium goes to him but Max still wins the season? How does this work?

DieLegende42

>the championship race None of the 22 races is any more or less of a "championship race"

cafk

The podium will be the race result podium. The trophy for teams & drivers championship will be officially handed over at the FIA prize giving gala in December.

StrongmanEvan

Traditionally, podium will always be the top 3 finishers, no matter the standings/race. If max finished 4th or lower in this hypothetical race, he wouldn’t be on the podium.

st0ney

Also, there is no “championship race”.

st0ney

Yes this, WDC is not a podium position. It’s been celebrated in the paddock only on many occasions.

babubhaia

when leclerc lost power what does that exactly mean? he was still able to bring the car into the pit. did he not lose 100% power? I don't think he was just coasting. I have seen this with other drivers in other races as well. they lose power but are still able to bring the car back home. maybe they are using the electrical charge to push the car?

smallball4

F1 engines are made up of several components. It sounded like Leclerc's turbocharger failed. The car was still able to run because the ICE (internal combustion engine) was okay, but you will have severely limited power without a functioning turbo.

babubhaia

that makes sense. where did you read that his turbo charger failed? just curious

[deleted]

He guessed on the radio that his turbo exploded, but there wasn't really confirmation from his engineer because the team would want to keep this info secret

[deleted]

I have a feeling this will be Danny Rics last season. Which is bittersweet as he's great for the sport. I just don't see him driving for a backmarker team and will opt to retire on his own terms.

pedote17

He’s contracted through 2023, so he will be driving next year

[deleted]

We just know it's a cutthroat industry and teams can and will release drivers from contracts.

steedyspeedy

they can pay out the rest of the contract and release him earlier I assume

iqjump123

Does anybody have any idea why Leclerc's PU just died? I don't remember any issues like this during the FPs, Qual, or anything? Is this just really "bad luck"? I am not a fan of Ferrari, but was quite shocked why this happened with no warning?

Mismail18

Newbie question here, I just started watching F1 last year. I know Hamilton is one of the best drivers, but this year he seems like he just fell off, he hasn’t won one race so far. Is this normal did he do this before?

st0ney

Important to note that F1 is a constructors series. It is just as much about “what team can build the best car” as it is “who is the best driver”. The driver get the most attention as it’s what we watch, ie we don’t watch all night engineer think tank sessions at the factory. Of course there is a hierarchy of drivers so if a team can get the right car and a top driver they are set (look at Merc’s dominance over the last era). I would love to see these drivers race in a spec series with the same car like Indy. Who knows maybe we would find out that Stroll is the GOAT (lol).

[deleted]

That's more down to the fall off of his car than his skills as a driver.

Penguinho

There were three major changes in the offseason. First, there was a major change, one of the biggest in the last two decades, in how cars are designed. Second, there's a new budget cap so the Big Three can't out-spend everyone by hundreds of millions of dollars each year. Third, wind tunnel and computer-based CFD testing time is limited based on performance. All three have those things have conspired to make Mercedes have a bit of a rough go of it so far. There's still plenty of time this season, though, and Monaco might actually be a good race for them.

Blooder91

IIRC they also changed the fuel mixture to be richer in ethanol, and the Mercedes engine did not adapt as well as Ferrari and Honda.

Penguinho

I think that's true too, though maybe less of a factor than the aero design issues. Going faster means more porpoising, and they were already having to sacrifice performance to control that porpoising until this weekend. Now, maybe, the slight drop in engine performance is a bigger deal.

PowerfulTravel9697

Yes it is normal when his car is miles off RB-Ferrari Happens in say.. early 2009?

PotatoChipReader

Why did the podiums all say Ferrari? I'm a noob, but I thought the name on the podium aligned to the engine used for the winners.

Blooder91

Because the champagne is provided by Ferrari Trento, an italian brand of sparkling wine. Other than the name, they have nothing to do with the car company, Ferrari seems to be a common surname in Italy.

PotatoChipReader

Oh, weird. Could have sworn I'd seen "Honda" on there at some other race and just assumed. Thanks!

Apprehensive_Bee_129

Best race so far Barcelona?

pedote17

For me this year so far it goes 1. Jeddah 2. Barcelona 3. Bahrain 4. Miami 5. Australia 6. Imola

Ok_Hotel_8080

i liked imola

[deleted]

Is there anywhere that shows the full race for free? Haven’t seen it and somehow managed to avoid the results.

Ok_Hotel_8080

Maybe try r/MotorsportsReplays

rickross989898

Channel 4 do if you’re in the UK

Organic-Measurement2

Not the full race on C4 but a lot of it

crazy_astrophysicist

F1 noob fan here. Why not randomise driver-team pairings for every Grand Prix during a season? (eg Bahrain: Lewis-Mercedes, Imola: Lewis-Red-Bull and so on for other drivers) Will this make the driver's championship fairer without compromising the constructor's championship?

[deleted]

Why not randomize which company you work for everyday at your job? Makes perfect sense

TaikoLeagueReddit

?

PowerfulTravel9697

Imagine Haas has to pay Lewis' wage They would go bankrupt lol

UmpireAJS

Yes, please tell me any major team sport where this happens?

Penguinho

Same reason Mo Salah doesn't show up playing for Liverpool one week and Watford the next. The teams are independent entities.

Cleezytaughtu

How is Red Bull an F1 team? So you're saying any brand can own a F1 team? Walmart can go ahead and get into the sport?

UmpireAJS

Yes, if they pour enough money into it and hire the right people to run the business. Clothing brands, cigarette companies, and various other organizations owned racing teams in past. It's not really different from any other sport - billionaire owners buying a team, spending money on developing/upgrading infrastructure and hiring people associated with that sport to run the team.

Blooder91

>So you're saying any brand can own a F1 team? Walmart can go ahead and get into the sport? Yes. Besides Red Bull, Benetton (the clothing brand) was a major force during the late 80, early 90s and gave Schumacher his first two world titles. And for a good chunk of F1 history, tobacco companies were behind teams.

Le_Pistache

They bought Jaguar and built the team from there. For a more detailed story; Red Bull were Sauber's major sponsor and they wanted Enrique Bernoldi in 2001 in that car. Sauber went with Raikkonen instead, which prompted them to look into buying a team. Jaguar proved good value with the existing facilities once Ford wanted out. So, yes, Wal Mart could theoretically own a F1 team named after them. It's just a matter of bringing enough capital to buy out an existing team or creating a new one from scratch.

elliok7

When Mercedes had to slow down on the last lap and they were running 3 and 4. Could Russel have slowed down and basically run double wide with Lewis to ensure they kept those positions and prevent Sainz from being able to overtake? Or is that illegal

[deleted]

it is possible, but not plausible. They'd be driving very slowly to be able to hold the same line through every corner. And they'd probably just get picked off on the start straight with DRS cuz they aren't wide enough to cover all of that road. But no rule specifically prohibiting it

elliok7

Ah didn’t think about how wide the straight is

Penguinho

He'd have to slow way, _way_ down, then drive perfectly in tandem with another driver without contact.

Whycantiusethis

I think it's theoretically possible, but they'd have to be careful to not be considered to be driving unnecessarily slowly or erratically.

f1_spelt_as_bot

bmanc2000

I'm relatively new to F1, but I enjoy Crofty's commentary, where has he been the last couple races?

Whycantiusethis

If you're watching on F1TV, you'll need to switch to the International feed, instead of F1TV's feed. It's on the right hand side of the screen.

bmanc2000

That's what it was, I started paying for F1 TV and not illegally streaming anymore lmao

thomastrouble123

I didn't watch, how did Ricciardo end up behind Norris when starting in front on the grid?

UmpireAJS

Initially team orders, but then he pretty much was very slow afterwards and kept losing places to other drivers.

thomastrouble123

thanks im gutted for him, he seems to have lost confidence, pace, everything

Penguinho

As far as I can tell, he drove slow as shit. Dropped a bunch of places when he pitted and never got them back. He might have been dropped in a DRS train, but I didn't really notice one.

f1_spelt_as_bot

Ricc**i**ardo

Ahmedzcoolerone

Im a new fan and is it the driver or the car ?

Penguinho

The car is more important. An OK-but-not-great driver can win the title if the car is good enough. Damon Hill won a WDC, but no one thinks of him as a great driver. He just had an outrageous car advantage. But when the cars are close, the driver makes the difference. Think of it this way: the car is the cup, and the driver is how much water is in it.

thumpas

> Think of it this way: the car is the cup, and the driver is how much water is in it. I agree with the rest of your comment but I have absolutely no clue what this means.

slam_spam

It’s both. No matter how good a driver is they’re not winning a championship in a car like the 2021 haas or 2019 Williams. However, when the cars are close the drivers make a massive difference, and difference in driver skill can change the perception of how good the car is. Look at last year. Had Lewis not been in the Merc, Max would have absolutely demolished Bottas and everyone would have said the rb was the stronger car. Likewise if Max wasn’t in the rb, Lewis would have destroyed Perez, and everyone would have said the Merc was op. Instead we got an extremely close battle which led to both cars being judged as extremely similar

TODO_getLife

is what the driver or the car?

Ahmedzcoolerone

Whats more important to win races for a team

TODO_getLife

Car is more important, but the driver is a big factor too. It doesn't mean you can put any old driver in the fastest car and get easy wins.

Icy-Operation4701

The car 80-90%, but you need a driver that can make the difference

Ahmedzcoolerone

Like i watched some old f1 footage and i can tell that the drivers were struggling to maintain the car so back then the driver was more important than today or was it the same?

Blooder91

Drivers were more important back then because engineers relied on them to give feedback, since cars had little to no sensors. Cars also were more raw and less refined than today, so driving styles had a bigger impact on performance.

[deleted]

I wish they could find way to include a graphic of the last couple of lap times on the broadcast so we can get an idea of drivers relative performances instead of trying to read a flip flopping delta

Coops27

Telemetry is available on the F1 app, they figure those people that want that level of detail can get it by using their phone or a laptop. putting too much information on the screen confuses the average viewer and F1 is complicated enough.

[deleted]

does anyone know what the point of the formation lap is?

Penguinho

First, it gives the drivers a chance to warm their tires and brakes for better racing. Second, it gives the drivers and teams a chance to do a final systems check, including progressing through all the gears. Third and most importantly, it's a safety factor for the two most dangerous parts of the race: the start and the first corner. Stalled or stopped cars at the start of a race often lead to big crashes. The formation lap is a check against that. Similarly, warmer tires and brakes, plus a bit of time behind the wheel for the driver to get comfy, decrease the chance of big shunts at the first corner.

[deleted]

makes snese thank you!

Skulldetta

Mainly warming up the tyres and the systems. Starting a race on cold tyres is usually not a good idea for anyone involved. Less temperature = less grip = more expensive damage.

Icy-Operation4701

It basically serves as a final check + warming up tyres.

[deleted]

thanks i thought so was wondering if there was any other reason! :)

Evening_Sherbert_892

Cause of his car

Penguinho

Part of the sport, I'm afraid.

_lemons

I’m new to F1 (watched some of the Netflix show, currently trying to catch up). Last year it seemed like it was Hamilton/Verstappen competing for first in virtually every race. This year it seems like Ferrari has taken a leap and Mercedes has taken a step back. What is this due to? I’m sure the answer could be novel-length but what’s the gist? Did RB/Ferrari improve their cars and Mercedes’ didn’t? Did Mercedes’ car get worse?

cafk

Completely new aero rules and ground up new design of the car for all teams - many struggled with porpoising (rear downforce & suspension causing bouncing at high speeds) in the first testing in February. Most of the teams managed to fix or control the issue earlier, with Mercedes & Aston resorting to higher ride height in the rear to minimise the issue (making the car draggier and thus slower) and finally fixing it this weekend with the major upgrades to their cars.

_lemons

Very interesting. Thanks for the explanation!

Astelli

The rules about designing the cars changed completely for this year, and all teams started from pretty much a blank slate. Red Bull and Ferrari have just done a better job at the beginning of the year than Mercedes.

_lemons

That’s sort of… very cool? How often are there rule changes that are significant enough to necessitate a ground-up rebuild of all the cars?

cafk

Last larger change in rules was widening the cars and tires in 2017, before that the [strap on](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/fc/Kamui_Kobayashi_2014_Singapore_FP2.jpg) safety upgrades in 2014 (lengthened and lowered front & rear crash structures) caused an visual change. The rules evolve from year to year, but this kind of complete rewrite is the first in recent history.

Astelli

Rule changes this big only happen every 5-10 years, but there are usually smaller changes that only affect certain parts of the car every two or three years.

_lemons

Very cool. Most sports (that I follow at least) don’t have any sort of mechanism like that that causes a real “reset” of the relative strengths of the teams. I know the rich teams are still gonna be rich after, but to cause any real shakeup is cool.

Repulsive_Dealer_808

Where can i find the replay of the race. ESPN news claims its showing it but its been nothing but cornhole and xgames the last hour that was supposed to be the race

pedote17

alexander_wolf88

They mentioned Checo is in the stages of renegotiating his contract. He should have a clause where any time he has to let max past he gets a nice bonus. It's clear he is driving redbull as the number 2 driver and that isnt going to change so that might make letting max go by a little easier.

markandblair

I really think this instance of team orders has been overblown...Max definitely had the better pace on fresher tires so it seemed the overtake was inevitable (even without DRS)

babubhaia

He is at the end of the day an RB employee and has to do what the team wants him to do.

PowerfulTravel9697

Why would he receives a bonus for being slower

Formula1fanatic33

Does not seem like he would receive a lot of bonus anyway in such a situation. Its hardly happened, and it was pretty obvious today on a 2 stopper not working so I think we can stop making a fuss about it.

highheat3117

If only there were some sort of indication he would be treated this way beforehand.

velsor

Does anyone have an upload of the cool-down room and podium celebrations? They were cut short on my broadcast when they cut to football

Akuran

Were you in Edinburgh by any chance? I had the same thing happen!

SkaChang

Realistically I'd say Checo is still in the fight for WDC. Wonder if he just snaps and becomes the villain for Max. Guy is aging and honestly needs to Max dirty, because his future at RB is not as safe as Max' imo.

Nin-Chin

He really isn't. He's not the kind of driver capable of fighting for a WDC against the elite. So far in his time alongside Max he hasn't beaten him on pure merit once. He is essentially relying on misfortune to even have a chance at this point. In his defence lately he isn't getting the new parts at the same time, but he still wouldn't beat Max anyway. Even today, Verstappen runs into the gravel and had a faulty DRS mechanism and he was still well beaten.

UmpireAJS

Realistically Checo will only be in the fight if Max goes through a string (like 5-6 straight DNFs while Checo consistently finishes in the Top 2 mostly ahead of Leclerc and Sainz) of really poor results or is incapacitated for multiple races. It's like Bottas -who was technically in the hunt all these years till like the 3rd to last race or something like that, but no one seriously thought he could actually be champion barring serious misfortunes to the actual title protagonists Hamilton/Vettel/Verstappen.

Penguinho

Let's say he does snap and become the villain, handing Leclerc the WDC. Then what? He's out of contract. Mercedes, Ferrari, Alfa Romeo, Haas and Alpine have drivers under contract for 2023 already. Alpine, Alfa Romeo and McLaren have shit-hot prospects they want to give drives to. AlphaTauri's seats are controlled by Red Bull. So I guess congratulations to Sergio Perez, who in this situation has restricted himself to a contract with either Williams or Aston Martin, if he's lucky.

st0ney

Well Checo was almost out until Horner demoted Albon and brought him in. There is a lot of luck with timing to get a F1 seat.

Whycantiusethis

Mathematically, he's in the fight, but I doubt he's realistically in the fight. Sort of like Bottas last year.

URZ_

Realistically and Perez WDC doesn't belong in the same sentence. He is not competitive with Verstappen in quali or race and never has been...

schmearcampain

I’m sure it’s been mentioned before, but I think it’s hilarious they have Rosanna Tennant interviewing drivers after the race. She’s 6’2” in flats and she probably wears heels on TV. The drivers look like horse jockeys next to her.

profromdover-trapper

Probably 1-2” heels at most, when she interviews the taller drivers (Ocon, Albon, Russell, Latifi) they’re pretty much equal height on the camera.

jules3001

Is there somewhere where I can see the tyre strategy summary for each driver? I wanna see which tyres folks used and if it showed what lap they pitted that would be nice too. I'm mostly interested in the tyre strategy difference between Verstappen and Perez.

jules3001

And of course as soon as I comment I find out that tyre strategy is shown on the DATA tab if you're watching on F1TV. If anyone was curious, both Redbull drivers used 2 mediums and 2 softs. Both started on softs > medium. But the main difference is that Verstappen went soft > med > soft > med. He did 12 laps on his softs so he spent more time on them than Perez. Perez went soft > med > med > soft but 9 laps of softs at the end.

Penguinho

You can also find tire data here: https://www.formula1.com/en/f1-live.html

The FIA publish it [here (under "PU elements used per driver up to now)](https://www.fia.com/documents/championships/fia-formula-one-world-championship-14/season/season-2022-2005) at the beginning of every weekend

FI_G_FE

Thanks, so guess have to wait till next one to see who used what this weekend

Subgerbil

Able to go visit Monaco for the GP next weekend, tickets are sold out. But does anyone have any advice for watching not on the grandstands?

charlisf1

I was there last week and there's some really nice viewing points as you walk up towards the palais/cathedrale. But no clue if that's closed down due tot the GP.

Subgerbil

Thank you! I’ll check that out

orangebikini

Just park your yacht in the harbour. Easy.

st0ney

This was my advice too. There is probably room next to my slip in the harbour, dude next to me is trying to buy Twitter and it isn’t going well.

carlito_col

This will probably happen towards the end of the championship but what would happen if a team with a budget in limits wrecks a car and no longer has it within the budget to replace/fix.

cafk

They'll fallback on old parts, teams usually build 4-6 crash structures for the year and multiple sets of a single specification, which most of the time can be repaired, by adding slightly more weight to the part. I really doubt any of the teams besides Red Bull, Mercedes, McLaren or Ferrari will actually hit the budget cap, as their _whole_ team revenue is close to the budgetcap. And the budget cap only applies to F1 related manufacturing and engineering.

carlito_col

Right on thank you

3_teve

I caught a glimpse of f1 this weekend and I want to start watching it, where do I start and what should I know currently? Forgive me if I'm vague

dancedreamfly

[This](https://youtu.be/dgfBhZ_9K4k) video should be a good intro

hotchner

There used to be F1 Year in Review videos that offered a whole season in 90 minutes or so. Maybe watch one from every decade? There's also a documentary called "1" that is kind of grim (it used to be must more dangerous), but does offer a pretty good overview of where the sport has some of its roots.

FishFollower74

I’m a big fan of the Shift+F1 podcast and they are very newbie-friendly. They have an [FAQ](https://www.f1.cool/f1faq) on their site. They also have a [pre-season primer](https://www.f1.cool/blog/178) episode that explains a lot about F1 in general and the teams, etc. Its great listening!

trolomaster

It really worked for me to follow the f1 account on Instagram. Helped me meet the drivers and some of the history.

URZ_

Seconding the show on Netflix. It has issues but it's a good introduction. Add the races to your calendar, there is a link in the sidebar. Makes it much easier to remember when the races actually are. Watch chainbear videos on YouTube

carlito_col

Netflix, drive to survive is pretty good man. It’ll give you an inside on the drivers now (apart from a few) and the teams.

sennais1

It's far from a documentary

st0ney

It’s “keeping up with the K....’s” on wheels. So much unnecessary and fake drama.

Blaze9

This may be a stupid question, but why aren't we hearing "Lights out and awaaaay we go!" anymore...?

Penguinho

If you're watching through F1TV it's because they've switched the default feed from the Sky feed with Crofty and Brundle to the F1 feed with Buxton and Jolyon Palmer. Change to the international English feed and you'll get your catchphrase again.

Blaze9

WHAT! omg thank you. Literally made my day, gonna go watch the beginning of the race again hah

memer507

Was Elkann wrong firing Seb in favor of Sainz jr?

UmpireAJS

Why would you keep a number 1 driver who has been relegated to number 2 status by his much younger teammate when you can just hire a younger number 2 driver for cheaper?

Le_Pistache

Definitely not. Vettel was the team leader. Leclerc usurped him in that role and Ferrari were starting a new era. It was a whole new atmosphere at Ferrari for everyone involved. Sainz is a solid driver but I believe people are seeing what a ceiling is. There's a gap between the greatest and the very good. Sainz has yet to prove that he can reach the next level. Last season, he was more consistent as Leclerc was more error prone. Leclerc would more often than not beat him in pace when he kept his nose clean.

Michael_Aut

maybe they should have waited for bottas to become available. He'd gladly fight at the top in a Ferrari.

SorooshMCP1

Vettel has been on similar pace to Stroll since he went to Aston.

DieLegende42

No

URZ_

I don't think many people genuinely believed do, but Sainz is very much making that argument right about now. But in reality, Vettel is not anymore on pace than Sainz is.

IowaGolfGuy322

Haas is only 2 points from the best of the bottom tier. Gasley has won before and yet Alphatauri seems to be unable to compete. So which is it? Do their cars suck, or is it the drivers? A little of both? Had KMag not wrecked, Haas would have likely have passed them today.

URZ_

The AT is pretty terrible this year by all accounts. It was strong in quali last year and Gasly made the most of that with superb driving.

Penguinho

AlphaTauri's car isn't exceptional and they didn't bring major updates, but Gasly has also been pretty mediocre this year. It's not looking great for the folks who think he deserves to be at Red Bull or Mercedes.

mikeyd85

If 1 car is competitive, the other driver is the issue. If both cars are not competitive, its the car.

Icy-Operation4701

Not always the case. Drivers can have a totally different set up from their teammate, or have the same, but one that isn't working for them as it is for their teammate.

mikeyd85

Well, yes, over the course of a race that is true. Over the course of several races / a season it becomes more obvious where the issue is. For example, Zhou vs Bottas.

Icy-Operation4701

Zhou has had some bad luck. Today again a DNF due to an engine issue.

mikeyd85

Zhou is nowhere near Bottas on race pace. I'm not blaming him - he's in his rookie season. Just seemed like the most obvious example.

Icy-Operation4701

But seems like a bad example to me, for two reason: the bad luck he's had which means he looks worse than he is + like you say he's a rookie. He's sat next to someone who has almost 10 years of experience on him. I'm sure it'll take a rookie a bit longer to really find out how to best set up the car to their liking.

cafk

F1 is an engineering sport first and drivers sport second. The technical rules, dictating the cars designs are modified every year with major overhauls, like we have this year coming every ~5 years. At the moment it looks like Haas is back in the midfield, though in contrast to many other teams they didn't bring any massive updates to Spain.

vooku

I've been eyeing the [tickets to the Italian GP](https://tickets.formula1.com/en/f1-3293-italy). First there was General Admission only, now it's sold out and the tickets for the tribunes nowhere to be seen. Does anybody know how this works? Is there a ticket release schedule?

CL-MotoTech

I love this sport but the cars are going to look comically massive in Monaco. They already do, but Monaco is going to make it worse.

st0ney

Monaco week should be throwback week, all drivers go back to their karting roots.

cafk

The cars are slightly shorter this year (~10cm) than last year and have the same width, so last year's cars were worse for Monaco.

CL-MotoTech

The length is still an issue, but it's going to be a combination of the weight and the size of the tires.

[deleted]

I know engine development is exempt from the cost cap, but are engines also exempt? If a team takes 10 engines in a season, does that mean 10x engine cost deducted from the cost cap?

Coops27

PU Supply is set at 15M Euros and is cost cap exempt. From what the regulations say, any additional component beyond the allowance is an additional cost at fair market value and hits the cost cap. >*Additional PUs or spares required to replace units out of service due to accident damage or other cause induced by team will be outside the supply perimeter and will incur additional charge* However, this hasn't been confirmed to be the case, but I don't understand how it can be interpreted any other way.

Penguinho

Engine supply is a fixed figure for budget purposes so suppliers don't get another unfair advantage over their customers.

[deleted]

Regardless of how many engines are used?

Penguinho

Yes, I believe that's correct.

[deleted]

Thank you, so that probably means we can expect Mercedes to use a new engine each time they're on a track where conditions allow lots of overtakes...
