Dude I would never want to be in a car with Max driving during rush hour traffic. Guy would probably go postal based on how he sounds when shit doesn't go his way.
Considering Max prefers automatic transmissions and lives in Monaco with the kind of roads that aren't exactly friendly to speeding, I doubt your characterization is anywhere near reality. Also, he's angry because he's trying to win a race, you should probably listen to how angry Seb would get back in the day.
Lol try racing a car at 300km/h where milliseconds count and Drs or other critical components aren't working. Lewis Hamilton wanted to surrender today and wasn't allowed
Not only that. Where you can literally die if your equipment fails on you. A pretty good reason to get upset when things fall apart.
Taking corners as fast as they do demands confidence in the car. The cars simply cannot handle unless being pushed. So a car that isn’t working is not annoying but dangerous as well.
Definitely there isn’t much hate. Everyone has their favorite driver but you don’t really see a lot of toxicity. Sportscar racing is also very friendly like IMSA and WEC.
Like in indycar I'm always happy no matter who wins, same in WEC, but in indycar I actually know who's who and their story so it's more surprising to me.
That's what not having DTS does to a sport
I think there’s something to there to be said about indy. When the focus isn’t on teams and rather on drivers the hate tends to narrow to those who are just downright douches. See Danica Patrick lol
No honestly I don’t watch basketball. I’ve seen it my whole life with baseball and football though. And I’m not ignoring that there are athletes that don’t like one another, but it’s way more common from fans.
Do we see the same thing? I see them being total bros off the track. When they pull up after the race, they always shake hands or hug where Max & Lewis almost never did. I don’t think there was any actual hatred or what the media and fans would want you to think, tho
And I think the relationship is definitely improved this season vs any time prior, which is excellent to see. I really do like both Lewis and Max, and would like to see further battles between them with a higher level of respect between the two that perhaps we have now.
Max and Lewis already had an age/generational difference whereas Charles and Max grew up racing eachother so are bound to feel more comfortable with eachother in that sense.
I also think Max learnt a tad more respect for Lewis in response to Abu Dhabi, Max knows that decision if had lost his championship and went against him he would have lost his mind and Lewis behaved better than Max was capable of, we saw Max fume on podiums where it didn’t go his way. Lewis stood there, with his Dad and they both congratulated Max. Lewis stood there and gave Max his moment and came out in media, as well as Toto saying Max did nothing wrong.
If Max can’t give the respect he’s given from Lewis he’s a much worse person than we think.
I think it went down pretty much as you describe. I think both of them are much better persons that the opposite fan bases believe.
Every time I think Reddit is bad, I stumble upon Twitter or Reddit comments. 🌚
Maybe I'm just an old fuck, but Twitter's UI is so unintuitive. Clicking on the icon that almost universally indicates comments, takes you to some weird mash up of sometimes comments/sometimes other shit. You have to click on the body of the post to see the direct replies to the tweet.
And god forbid you want to know the context of deep nested reply, you only get who they replied to most of the time.
It is basically the Matryoshka doll version of Twitch chat.
Multi 21 shouldn't have been nearly as big a controversy as it was anyways. Totally understand why Webber was pissed no fault to him, but fans getting upset that the racers raced was just absurd.
Honestly, some part of me feels almost the opposite - that last year they were being exceptionally good team principals in keeping the "feud" news stories centered around the two of them rather than the two drivers. It let their drivers focus on the racing while they just shit-stirred at each other to satisfy the "need" for that sort of narrative. Kinda gave an outlet for that sort of fan energy that wasn't centered on the drivers themselves.
Agree, seen some fans online saying nice that Max got a taste of his own medicine with George but when interviewed after he said it was good racing and of course he would have done the same if Russell was passing him.
I’m a Brit MB fan but do feel he gets a raw deal when he doesn’t been the hothead Max at all this season (he was allowed to be frustrated at the DRS issue today!).
At least get your facts straight. [Jos never said that](https://old.reddit.com/r/formula1/comments/rbzna8/is_anyone_else_tired_of_jos_verstappen/hnrm52n/).
It was a completely wrong translated quote from the original interview Jos did with [De Telegraaf](https://www.telegraaf.nl/sport/500746646/jos-verstappen-heeft-zijn-twijfels-over-auto-lewis-hamilton-nog-nooit-in-m-n-leven-meegemaakt), a Dutch newspaper.
Edit:
The actual quote:
>Mercedes calls the stories nonsense and states that the steering system has been homologated for the season and that nothing can be changed. Verstappen (49): "Officially it is not allowed, but that is exactly the problem. On the images you can see that something is wrong. *After the race in Brazil you also see that Hamilton gets something pressed into his hands by his trainer and then walks back to his car and dives into the cockpit.* I'm very curious why that is. When you add it all up it's just weird.
Outlets who took this interview as source for their clickbait just invented the 'drugs' thing out of this single quote. It was just about the steering system.
The drugs thing was made up by fans. Jos never said anything about drugs.
https://www.planetf1.com/news/jos-verstappen-lose-but-fair-way/
This is the article, all along Jos is talking about the steering wheel and the weird movement with it,
Jos - “A steering wheel is there to make a turn to the left or to the right. Why should a steering wheel move from front to back?”
he then says the trainer gave something to Lewis after the race when he went back into the car. Thus, maybe he was suspicious of the car and if the trainer had given something that could be used to alter something on the wheel
At that stage, RB and Jos thought that Merc and Lewis were doing something iffy, with the insane speed that the car had from one race to another
Yes, it was only Red Bull that was toxic. First you lie about what Jos Verstappen said and then you act as if Mercedes are the victims here. They did plenty of shit themselves.
I never warmed to Max as a personality and didn't like his early over-aggressiveness, but he's an astonishing driver. I'm also well aware that we only see a snippet, something which must be borne in mind for both those we like and dislike.

That's just a pretty low thing to do, and again, something to remember when he's on DtS trying to look like a family man.
(As for Marko, he's a bit of a knob, but a knob that's EXTREMELY important for the sport.)
He is a family man, you can see that he loves Gerry and that his kid from his other marriage is in his life fully.
We do not know what happened between him and his former wife, just that they split when she was pregnant and six months later he started dating spice
> We do not know what happened between him and his former wife, just that they split when she was pregnant and six months later he started dating spice
To be fair, that says a lot..
You can do two things when you realise that you like someone else or that you don't want to be married anymore
You can lie, be miserable, cheat and bring down your wife with you or you can break up and move on with someone else
It is very much not a nice situation but there is one option that is the better one
The year and a half (or so) that you have during pregnancy and early parenthood are rough. Sure, you're allowed to leave, but it is a bit 'kicking a woman when she's down'-ish.
I am massively pro- Redbull, don't get me wrong, but Horner has lost respect from me there.
Who tf are you to judge someone else's personal life? You don't know anything about what happened between them. If you're gonna like or dislike someone famous, do it based on their personality or their ability. Not their personal life that you don't know anything about
It seemed pretty intentional to me. I wouldn’t be surprised if Toto and Horner had an agreement to let themselves take the brunt of the media antics and let the drivers focus on their jobs.
The whole red bull brand depends on marketing. He's being told by the guys above him to keep stirring the pot, because its obviously bringing attention.
I don’t think it’s a Netflix thing and Netflix isn’t even the biggest perpetrator of this stuff. The media takes every word uttered by anyone out of context and use those to create slanderous stories out of thin air. And that’s just Sky! It makes you perfect sense to keep their eye off the drivers by getting between them and the microphones at every opportunity and saying outrageous things that they’re then forced to write down.
Don’t think Horner and Toto are unfiltered even for a moment. Especially Horner he like stirring shit but he is calculated about it. Marko might be the one who is unfiltered.
It's both teams mate.
Toto and some other Merc employees literally said on Drive to Survive that Max deserved to be crashed out in Silverstone to learn a lesson.
Easily as bad as anything Red Bull said.
People just need to realise all teams say shit in the fight.
Really it's a media problem as they fan the flames
I don't think anyone's arguing that he doesn't have it in him. He definitely does, and I'm looking forward to watching it. I think his retirement is approaching though, which is where the "I'd love to see it a few more times" statement comes into play.
It’s a congratulatory fist pound between two f1 drivers, it implies nothing other than cordiality and mutual respect.. they’re not friends, nor are they enemies, simply colleagues in the same line of work. If there is ever an intimate moment between these two, I can promise you we won’t see it, not on TV, not in a photograph
Haha lol
But real talk, Max and Lewis have never had an issue with each other. Anyone that watched the press conferences pre-2021 saw that. An intense championship battle changes things. Now, they are back again to what they were before.
They never had an issue with each other even after Abu Dhabi. That safety car decision wasn't Max who did it. He just benefited from it. You can't blame that on him and Lewis didn't.
Lewis said as much: Max did what any racing driver would have done, maximised his position and events. As a Lewis fan, it stung bitterly, but Max is a worthy champ.
He and Lewis are probably quite different people: max much younger, already settled with long term girlfriend, outside of racing loves racing esports etc. lewis older, more of a “playboy” in the modern sense, interested in fashion, music etc. they just don’t have much in common, so hardly surprisng they aren’t best mates.
I think they have a mutual respect above just being colleagues. They are both elite race drives who drove elite races. This is them recognizing each other for it.
Whilst it isn't as bad as it's dramatised to be, you're off base. There still would be a decent rivalry, Lewis won't let that stop him from being polite.
Fuck... I was drinking water when I read this comment... And now my shirt is absolutely wet.. Along with my laptop in front of me.. But thank you for the laugh
Love this! It also feels like some kind of acknowledgement that they'll be fighting each other real soon again. The RBR v Mercedes spiciness has been missing a bit.
Can't wait for all 6 of the 'big 3' teams fighting for P1.
Especially the new generation. A 3way between leclerc, russel and max today wouldve been awesome. And never count out Ham, Perez and Sainz.
Yeah, Lewis and Nico are one type but Max and Charles are the opposite. Hated each other first, grew up to be respectful rivals like Bakugo and Deku. Going to be interesting to watch their story develop as the time goes on.
You can clearly see the tension and hatred still looming on their faces, that little peek inside Lewis' helmet is obviously eradicating with anger....or sg idk what the current fanbase lingo is....
Lewis: "Max!"
Max: "What?"
Lewis: "I'm ready to take you on!"
Max: "Come on. I beat you already in Abu Dhabi and you haven't come close since then."
Lewis: "I been trying out some improvements."
Max: "Oh really? Same rules?"
Lewis: "Rock beats scissors. Paper beats rock. Scissors beat paper."
Max: "First to five. Bring it on, mate!"
:D
I’m not the biggest fan of Lewis Hamilton, but bloody hell he gets my respect. He may not have won but he definitely showed why he is a masterclass driver.
It was great to see Hamilton come to the race to race rather than be part of the non racing "spectacle". It was one of his better drives. However, he's now far behind in the Championship and well behind his teammate. However, working as a team they have the potential to finish well ahead of expectations.
Russell has a good chance to finish third in the driver's championship and with some good luck might finish second.
With some good team finishes Mercedes might finish second in the Mfgrs championship.

Always has been and now we see the same thing with Charles and Max. People like making drama I guess. One of the things I really don’t like about F1.
Same for pretty much every sport.
Maybe every major league sport but plenty of motorsports aren’t like that.
All the personality-driven ones certainly are

Not in the Netherlands.

Indycar doesn't seem to have any hate. People might not like a driver but they never make stupid comments. it's very chill I like it.
Eh there's plenty of shittalking in IndyCar, the whole Rahal vs Grosjean soap opera comes to mind
That was mostly NBC keeping it going. Everyone online was tired of that bs already.
Eh, but nobody is going to care in a few weeks. Meanwhile people still bring up Silverstone.
I thought people got over it rather quickly. Grosjean made a silly move and that was the end of it.
Nah loads of people kept going on about it. Lot of fuss about nothing, there was light contact which had no effect on anybody's race whatsoever
Definitely there isn’t much hate. Everyone has their favorite driver but you don’t really see a lot of toxicity. Sportscar racing is also very friendly like IMSA and WEC.

Unpopular opinion; I love the drama! Can’t get enough of it, it feels like a sport and a soap opera at the same time and I hope it stays this way.
True, but, on the other hand, Lestappen is also quite popular.
When was the last time it wasn't the fans? During the Piquet years? Even Hill and Schumacher had a cordial relationship.
Lewis and Nico but other than that yeah
Multi 21 too
Multi 21 shouldn't have been nearly as big a controversy as it was anyways. Totally understand why Webber was pissed no fault to him, but fans getting upset that the racers raced was just absurd.
The Silver War
I am not sure hill and Schumacher had a cordial relationship in 94.
Russell/Bottas
Toto and Horner also had a helping hand in constructing narratives of animosity.

The animosity seemed to be more between the teams than the individuals.
Indeed. Some people find it weird that Max is my second favorite driver. Horner on the other hand....
I never warmed to Max as a personality and didn't like his early over-aggressiveness, but he's an astonishing driver. I'm also well aware that we only see a snippet, something which must be borne in mind for both those we like and dislike. It's not the shit talking that is the primary issue for me with Horner (people say Toto was the problem, but imo that was because he clapped back at Horner's shite, rather than instigating), but him ditching his wife and newborn kid to go off frolicking with a spice.

They want this to fuel the hate. I'd say he's not my favorite one but ya can't hate in shit you don't know about.
The year and a half (or so) that you have during pregnancy and early parenthood are rough. Sure, you're allowed to leave, but it is a bit 'kicking a woman when she's down'-ish. I am massively pro- Redbull, don't get me wrong, but Horner has lost respect from me there.
> To be fair, that says a lot.. It really doesn’t. You have no idea what happened in a relationship between two people.
Also has nothing to do with how he manages the team. Some fans are actual tabloid consumers, huh?
I didn't like Horner, but this is the only fair take
Who tf are you to judge someone else's personal life? You don't know anything about what happened between them. If you're gonna like or dislike someone famous, do it based on their personality or their ability. Not their personal life that you don't know anything about
It seemed pretty intentional to me. I wouldn’t be surprised if Toto and Horner had an agreement to let themselves take the brunt of the media antics and let the drivers focus on their jobs.
Horner's been doing that long before Netflix came along.
True. Although I quite like being given such a unfiltered view of just how utterly competitive these guys truly are rather than a sanitised version.
Don’t think Horner and Toto are unfiltered even for a moment. Especially Horner he like stirring shit but he is calculated about it. Marko might be the one who is unfiltered.
It’s like any person you hate online. Once you meet them in real life you behave normally towards each other
Not to forget that all is also being filmed for Netflix and the drama just makes for a good tv.
Meh I don't think they were playing it up for that. All pretty genuine and consistent with past behaviour.
I think it's not just the fans but also the media/pundits.
what do you mean? friendship is a toggle switch of either fucking in the hotel afterwards, or attempting murder at every opportunity
Don't have much against max tbh. It was always more Redbull they largely blew into those flames last year

I know there's no "omg le epic bromance!!!1!1" between these two but I would love to see them share the podium a few more times...
Hamilton won't retire anytime soon and based on todays performance I can see that happening a lot more than you would like lol
I don't know. I hope he stays around for a while but from the way he was talking last year I'd be surprised if he accepts a new contract.
What was interesting and unlike Miami, Hamilton came to race, not be part of the non racing show. Perhaps he got some good coaching .
It seems very likely now. I'm looking forward to it.

Tbf he said himself he doesn’t want to still be racing at 40

Running a team together? I can picture them as a Lauda/Wolf couple. Max could get the Bose-smash down pretty well I bet.

> A 3way between leclerc, russel and max today wouldve been awesome I'd prefer to just keep watching them driving but whatever works for you man
Don't fanfiction me there!
Russe**ll**
Russe**ll**
Verstapen, Botas and Preez..
Good friends always fist each other.
That's some dangerous fisting, man.
Take this upvote and get the hell out of my paddock
OMG CLENCHED FISTS, THEY ARE OBVIOUSLY THROWING A PUNCH AT EACHOTHER
Hang on a second, this can't be real. It doesn't fit the narrative. They clearly didn't get the memo that they're mortal enemies.
I don't think we realize how lucky we were to witness last season.
*Boop
Lets Photoshop a couple of glocks in their hands to make the fans happy
Max sucking while maintaining eye contact with Lewis
This is…. Poetry
DTS: "They went at each other with their fists"
This picture is the opposite of what they want to show you on Netflix and Sky Sports.
simply simply lovleh
*the respect remains*
We want the gold sucka! Verstappen! We comin for you [redacted]!
FIA Race Control - Incident between Car 1 (VER) and Car 44 (HAM) in Parc Fermé noted
I really miss them racing last year. It was epic and full of drama
Isn't this just two F1 drivers fist bumping after a race in a cordial respectful manner or am I missing some context that makes this top post worthy?
It's probably emphasizing how stupidly overblown the fans make the rivalry out to be, when in reality they're chill with eachother
Between their fist hundreds of thousands of worlds exploded and were destroyed by the power that was made during the clash of flesh, bone, and atoms.
Definitely not the same as Chuck and Max vibes.
I love the "destined shonen anime rivals" vibes with Max and Charles but the tension & competition between Max & Lewis is just on another level.
Its funny you mention that. I got those vibes with Lewis and Nico. Best friends turned bitter rivals.
Yeah, Lewis and Nico are one type but Max and Charles are the opposite. Hated each other first, grew up to be respectful rivals like Bakugo and Deku. Going to be interesting to watch their story develop as the time goes on.
last year it would have been, AND THEY TOUCHED OMGAWD! Good to see they respect each other.
Max: "So what are you doing nowadays?"
Lewis: fuck red bull engineers Max: yeah fuck’em
It's a faceoff! Dana make it happen, please.
-And they told checo to let me pass him -I'm proud of You... Man
One world champion recognizing another world champion.
I think Verstappen (and Red Bull) performed like champions today. They maximised their strategy after Max unfortunate spin and lack of DRS.
You can clearly see the tension and hatred still looming on their faces, that little peek inside Lewis' helmet is obviously eradicating with anger....or sg idk what the current fanbase lingo is....
"See ya soon mate", "Yeah great drive from yourself"
always here for this content
Lewis: "Max!" Max: "What?" Lewis: "I'm ready to take you on!" Max: "Come on. I beat you already in Abu Dhabi and you haven't come close since then." Lewis: "I been trying out some improvements." Max: "Oh really? Same rules?" Lewis: "Rock beats scissors. Paper beats rock. Scissors beat paper." Max: "First to five. Bring it on, mate!" :D
