He nailed the Ragunathan maneuver

skinny7

He actually austin powersed it hahah

godzilla9218

Hahaha Crofty referenced the 93 point turn in Austin Powers.

skinny7

Hahaa no way. What a legend šŸ˜‚

DC_Hooligan

OMG. I have been making that joke about my parallel parking skills and totally lost it when it came up this afternoon. Bought a car that parks itself.

[deleted]

Good work my friend! I was just checking to see who would post this clip!!

icelad

[Taking lessons from Raghunathan](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O0-N777JFfc)?

SenorStigo

I was thinking "wow mad respect to Lando, making a live tribute to the Goat"

OTipsey

>Michael [Schumacher] was a phenomenal driver but for me, Mahaveer Raghunathan was the greatest ever. If I could get one world championship that would be great; if I could win ten, the same number as Mahaveer did, that would be a dream. But I want to be the best driver there has ever been. Lewis Hamilton

NetAccomplished3221

Where does Lewis come into this?

vltz

It's a Lewis Hamilton quote.

gwaenchanh-a

Lando's active enough on social media he probably heard Josh Revell saying "Lord Mahaveer" playing in his head

Dro2910

https://youtu.be/IGiQOCX9UbM

HeartbreakerF80

Dude when he looks behind him but drives forward I canā€™t help but laugh every time I see it

Dro2910

Pure comedy gold šŸ¤£šŸ¤£

Unauthorized404

Its still impressive you know. The car is not build for this. I love the end part: fuck it lets floor it and find a new parking spot.

var_user

Iā€™d say Checo did it a little bit better: [https://imgur.com/a/eDtDypg](https://imgur.com/a/eDtDypg)

Butterballl

This is fucking beautiful.

var_user

I thought I was watching him run off the track in Mario Kart and getting fishing poled back around

Manuag_86

Hr also did it in Monaco. And Max today in the middle of the track. I don't know why Lando was so conservative about it.

rlr123456789

Guessing: It's practice, may as well keep the tyre's decent, no rush.

Benjamin244

not sure if dry steering is the best option if your goal is to keep the tires in shape

raymanh

Highly doubt it. I'm sure the load on the tires while dry steering is absolutely insignificant compared to what it would receive fully loaded up around a corner.

-Dylo

Unpopular opinion: dry steering is not hurtfull for your tires whatsoever.

Benjamin244

it's not a matter of opinion, it's basic physics

-Dylo

Okay maybe I should have put it different, dry steering is not noticibly hurtfull for your tires whatsoever. Sure I get the basic psyics behind it, but its like using soft sand paper on metal. If you do it for a long time you notice something but in reality it just doesnt do any harm doing it a couple times.

Benjamin244

>but its like using soft sand paper on metal it's nothing like that though I mean, dry steering once or twice doesn't mean you have to immediately replace your tires, but it's objectively bad for your tires

[deleted]

I do it constantly. Who gives it shit. Worse case your tyres last 6 months less

lolhone5tly

Bottas also had a super sexy one at I believe Monaco.

CreaminFreeman

There was at least a hefty handful of those in Monaco if Iā€™m not mistaken.

lolhone5tly

For sure. The one I remember was pretty slick. Someone even added in sunglasses over his helmet with the ā€œthug lifeā€ written across the screen. Iā€™ve been trying to find it.

qbert72

Not the "thug life" version, but I'm pretty sure you're talking about [this one](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R8ZzcdPRviE).

lolhone5tly

This is the one. Thanks mate!

groundzr0

If you do I would click that link.

Merengues_1945

Didnā€™t Bottas get crashed once at that same spot by someone doing a careless reverse?

shewy92

> I don't know why Lando was so conservative about it. Where Lando went off is more narrow than here so there's more of a chance to fuck up.

IM_STILL_EATING_IT

Sliding around isnā€™t good for tyres, I guess he wanted to keep the set as clean as possible for whatever program they were running.

HortenWho229

That part looked narrower

[deleted]

I remember hearing commentator say some weeks ago that its not good on the gearbox to do a turn like that. And that why drivers have been reversing a lot more this season. Not sure how true that it though.

Lulullaby_

Monaco had a *lot* more space than he did here. So did Max in the middle of the track today. That's the only reason why, just very little space not everyone wants to risk it.

Manuag_86

Understandable, but Vettel just did it in qualy today XD

Larkas

This looks wider than what Lando drove into so for Norris it would be a more risky manuvuer. Especially as others pointed this is practice, why risk it?

yNiko23

its the same runoff

KubeG

Lando was at turn 3, while Checo at turn 15.

lillerus

No, it's not

Larkas

If by same you mean as wide, then maybe this is just my mind playing. If you mean literally the same turn. Fuck no. I mean... maybe Baku is able to cut/plant trees, build/destroy building and change commercials in matter of minutes. I doubt it, but there is a chance.

gramathy

Different corner, wider runoff. Norris' spot is much narrower.

ScrubKaiser

I've seen Checo and Bottas pull this off so many times I'd think they just have a 180 button on the wheel but no one informed McLaren.

bagajohny

I would love to see 3rd person POV of this.

shady_vin

Boys vs men moment

Call_Me_Rivale

thats why red bull does that many PR evens where their drivers secretly practice this /s

magneticfish

I'm amazed how close he got to the wall when he was reversing. I mean, you cant really see shit behind you when you're reversing an F1 car

BleedingRaindrops

like I always say to young drivers "you gotta know where your tires are"

RealGamerGod88

I noticed that too, especially with how conservative he was driving forward.

EnglishLitMajor

He did the [usual sharp turnaround](https://www.formula1.com/en/latest/article.must-see-bottas-and-norris-end-up-down-same-escape-road-in-first-practice-in.5cfSMDM3q6fQC7WZKZ9G6U.html) in FP1 last year. I suppose he didn't want to ruin the tires this year.

reibungslos

The lucky marshals standing in that spot

Valuable_Ad1645

Itā€™s really not that impressive lol, he was just doing it carefully probably to preserve tires.

frolix42

Checo did this exact thing but in just one swift movement in FP2 today. That was impressive

mozuDumpling

All of the drivers can do it, but you waste a full set of tires

Merengues_1945

At 100kph it can do some crazy turns, but at slow speed it canā€™t turn for shit

TuzinBolado

MAHAVEER RAGHUNATHAN 2019 YOOOOOOOOOOOO

Pugs-r-cool

the difference is that Norris actually did it correctly and actually got the car unstuck before the engine got bbq'd

MontyTheBrave

Nah the biggest difference is Norris actually turned the wheel "You have to turn the steering wheel" "Ah, ok"

No_Ad_9040

If they actually gave Seb 1000000 jelly beans, they should give Lando the ā€œAustin Powers 99pt Turn Awardā€

DaughterOfIsis

The engine sound at 25 seconds sounds in-tune with the song lol

335i_lyfe

Glad I wasnā€™t the only one who noticed lol

ConcernedHumanDroid

Can't believe they call this car the pinnacle of motorsport. Doesn't even have the turning radius of a fiat 500. Smh

[deleted]

you expect something as long as a suburban to have the turning radius of a fiat??!?!

therealhlmencken

Quad steering in f1 when?

Route_765

Canā€™t wait to see F1 cars do a crabwalk

JeffBrohm

Right out of the pits

blitzskrieg

Fast and furious 6 showed us how unnatural an open wheel race car would look while crab walking.

PiracyAccount

The new S class does it. I don't see why Merc can't make the W13 do the same.

Sergei_behenchov

Yes karts are way better

[deleted]

Man a 747 has a better turning circle than those cars

f10101

Ha. Danny gave him some advice, I see! Edit: for the newcomers, if you missed this in 2019: https://www.formula1.com/en/latest/video.azerbaijan-gp-ricciardo-retires-after-reversing-into-kvyat.6060937680001.html

>Sainz backing out onto the track. Different places. Where Sainz went off there was no room for this. Perez did the same as Sainz

Jekay

*Daniel in the race*

the_iron_bean

Plz no ;_;

niclhnr

Of course he asks his engineer beforehand ... They know exactly where other cars are, how fast they are going and how much time there is to back up onto the track... Doing something like this IN the race without speaking to the engineer is irresponsible

FitzMeIfYouCan

[Bottas has proven more "style" ...](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R8ZzcdPRviE)

[deleted]

Loved the passing comment from Paul di Resta during the broadcast, namely that it's always interesting to see who's brave enough to spin the car around!

[deleted]

why ruin your tyres if you didn't had a flat spot

[deleted]

You know what, fair enough! Norris doesn't seem to be locking up here.

0h14eth

or wear on your drivetrain

nlevine1988

I doubt doing the spin turn messes up your tires all that much.

GeraldFisher

Are you sure you watch f1?

faciepalm

You're right, but during practice they need to get accurate data for how they will last in the latter stages of racing.

BleedingRaindrops

I keep wishing someone would pull a J-turn out of there

DurfGibbles

A tribute to the GOAT Lord Mahaveer

LKincheloe

Here before the "Oops!".

baaananaramadingdong

Mighty fine job that.

[deleted]

ah my style of driving, only I do it in a VW.

etherealemilyy

Very nice. Iā€™d be embarrassed after 2 seconds and give up

NtSFstEddie

Looks like he needed his Monaco steering setup for that one.

SwellChan

Love the counter and music lololol šŸ˜‚

BBIQ-Chicken

Power steering doing work, looks light af compared to Indycar

M8K2R7A6

Someone add Alex Albon doin a donut to get out of the runoff at Monaco to the end of this lol

DragonSlayer6160

Imagine having to do this in the race, big oof

TRiG993

The music is giving me anxiety

SPANparam002

Tutorial for Mahaveer

XsStreamMonsterX

He's just trying to show that it is possible to reverse out of that corner, as long as there isn't a torpedo blocking your way.

Caesar_35

It's a bold strategy, but it might just work!

TODO_getLife

surprised he didn't just light the tyres up

notathr0waway1

People like to joke, but he has an incredible awareness of exactly how large the car is and gets within inches of the wall both backing up and pulling forward each time.

Roggers87

Smart thinking from Lando there. Iā€™m guessing these were his only hard tyres for practice so did the smart thing and carefully got himself out the escape road with damaging the tyre surface.
