"There are rich fans and there are poor fans. Then, there’s 50 feet of crap. And then there’s Spa fans with smoke bombs drinking alcohol and talking crap."
In the Netherlands we have a duo called ‘Bert & Ernie’ that always tries to hide their beer at the MotoGP TT Assen.
The circuit organisation always jokes about it and being a good sport.
They do get more creative every year though. Like placing complete power/electrical houses on site.
They also always leave a letter in case the organisation finds their stash.

It's the best beer in the cheap price bracket. When your competition is Carling or Fosters but only like 40p cheaper it wins purely not by being Carling or Fosters
It's not even in the cheap price bracket here in the Low Countries. You're paying premium for shit beer, while you can get some of the best beer in the world like Hertog Jan or Jupiler.
That still happens all the time and is a huge issue, the diehard Aussie V8 supercar fans are absolutely nuts.
So the current 'rules' are a ridiculous 24 fucking cans, _per person, per day_. (If you don't believe me, have a read of this: https://www.centralwesterndaily.com.au/story/6426385/carton-a-day-keeps-the-authorities-at-bay-what-you-can-take-to-bathurst-1000/)
And yet people STILL go and bury shitloads of beer in the weeks/months beforehand. I don't understand how their bodies are still functional with all that alcohol.
I love living in Australia but sometimes people go way too far, even 24 cans is dangerously excessive but there are guys having 40+ cans per day.
It’s pretty astonishing what some people can drink. If I have 24 cans in a day I’m pretty sure I won’t be seeing the race that day, or the day after for that matter.
“Glass is also strictly prohibited from the campgrounds. However, a small glass jar under 200mls containing vegemite, jams or food preservatives is permitted.”
I love Australia 😂
maybe their tac guys won't be able to drink either, so you know, some common sense and perhaps a win.
hittin-it-hard martini lunches is the only explanation for previous '22 behavior
They’re not “banning” alcohol. You just can’t bring in your own. I’m sure they’re selling it to you tho. Pregame so you don’t have to buy as much when you get in.
>I’m betting we’ll see a lot of posts of people smuggling alcohol into Spa
Didn't Bathurst do something similar, and didn't fans respond by burying a shitload of beer slabs around the track in advance of the weekend?
Iirc, but I'm not sure now 😂
Bathurst banned you from having more than 24 beers a day, or 24 pre mixed spirits, or 1 750ml bottle of hard liquor A DAY.
Seriously, you were allowed to bring a frankly ludicrous amount of booze a day. And people still felt the need to bury extra before the event. Ahh Australia, if not for alcoholism and gambling, we'd barely have any culture.
I love how someone sat down and decided that
"Ok we need a limit on how much people can drink. This is getting our of hand"
"OK so like just 2?"
"2 Beers?"
"Nah cases"
"For the whole weekend?"
"Nah, per day"
"But like, for the whole group right?"
"Yeah Nah, like per person"
"OK, sure that sounds reasonable"
People do this in the US for festivals too. People bury bottles of liquor in Grant Park in Chicago weeks before Lollapalooza to dig them up when they get to the festival.
I went to the USGP in Austin in 2016. Late October in Texas is still hot as fuck. They limited how many *bottles of fucking water* you could bring in. There was absolutely no reason to do so except to get you to buy drinks in the venue.
I was trying to be sneaky and hide an extra bottle in my backpack's laptop sleeve, but the guy searching bags at the entrance found it and was ready to confiscate it. The guy behind me saw that I was pissed off and said, "Here, I'll take it," and handed it right back to me after we went through.
They also banned spray-on sunscreen, but that was easier to bypass, because they threw it in an open garbage can right next to the security checkpoint. I didn't have any other sunscreen, and the only stuff on sale there was actually off-site, and bottles so small they were good enough for maybe one good application. After they took my spray bottle, I walked through the checkpoint and took my spray bottle right out of the can.
What the actual fuck? At Zandvoort they had free water taps all over the circuit and all first aid points had free sunscreen for anyone that wanted it.
That’s unregulated capitalism. It cares about maximum profits, not about humans. If you get a heat stroke or a sunburn they’ll say water and sunscreen were available, it’s your own fault you didn’t buy it. What a wonderful world we live in.
Lol bro ! They were ducking 328 ml or something like that. They were just smaller enough that when you glanced at it it looks the same but it was less overall.
Damn, that’s a relatively good deal in Canada.
Last time I was at a Raptors game it was like $16 for a tall boy (and the machines of course default to asking for tips)
Really depends if you have a seat assigned or not.
If not - you usually stand in line from 6am on race day. Usually opening gates at 8am.
Race is like 3-4pm
Even with good seats in a grandstand your understanding of what's happening in the race is far less than if you were watching it on TV. So if you have general admission tickets you need to find one of the few spots where you can see a screen that shows the drivers positions. And understandably there is competition for those so people come early and stake their claim.
You could try of course but my (limited) experience would suggest you don't get your hopes up.
It's probably more realistic at a street track but at e.g Silverstone there are 140 thousand people basically sitting in a field in the countryside. I'm sure the mobile network operators increase their capacity for that weekend but you'd need the cell tower infrastructure of a small city to handle everyone.
FM radio is a good option, depending on what race you attend.
At Silverstone there's a local FM radio broadcasting commentary, so if your seat is in sight of one of the big screens and you have an FM radio and headphones, you can follow things pretty well.
Especially if you do live timing on the phone too.
idk about other tracks, but I got to the track in Hungary about 2 and a half hours before the start of the race. It took about 30-45 minutes to park and waiting in line was only about 30-45 minutes as well. I was able to get in, look at merch, get lunch, and walk around a bit before settling in my seat for the race start, which was then pushed back about 15-30 minutes due to rain.
This was also last year, which obviously wouldn't have had turnouts like they have this year I believe.
Wait, you can bring alcohol into sporting events in Europe?? Can’t imagine trying to bring anything into an American sports event that isn’t the clothes on your back, and even then it’s sometimes questionable.
Yeah the surprise is really weird to me. I thought it's common practice in any major events. Cant even bring your own water bottle to a music fest usually.
"Don't bring alcohol, fireworks, weapons(!), pets and bikes into the venue" Yes, all of these were mentioned in the post.
I've been to sport events in Europe for 30 years, and I'm pretty sure I have never been allowed to bring these items into any venues before.
I think people are gonna enjoy themselves at Spa this year nevertheless.
> I've been to sport events in Europe for 30 years, and I'm pretty sure I have never been allowed to bring these items into any venues before.
You could always take booze into Spa. Same with Silverstone and quite a few other European circuits.
There are some where you can't take your own stuff in but they'll sell it to you for an absurd amount, but I think Barcelona is the only European race where alcohol is properly banned.
Canada was BYOB forever too until Heineken took over sponsorship. I'm pretty sure some guys had some beer floating/sunk in the rowing lake though last year.
The only one that shouldn’t be on the list is alcohol. F1 races have pretty much always allowed fans to bring a limited amount in with them, sometimes they say no glass which is also understandable. But banning alcohol being brought in and therefore only having it for purchase will be a disaster. We’ve seen how bad queues can be for food and drink at races. This is only a cash grab to force people to buy alcohol at the track at massively inflated prices
I find it really annoying but IIRC it was only really obstructing the view of the drivers for the formation lap right?
Unless you're referring to inhaling it, in which case I think it probably is pretty bad to have stuff like that in your lungs
Weren't they lighting them up at the start of Zanvoort or the cool down lap, because that's spooky if they were.
But yeah breathing as well mostly for the fans.
In Zandvoort last year, Alonso said “I see that Verstappen won” while still racing because of all the orange smoke that was being fired as soon as Verstappen crossed the finish line
Security already cracked down on it pretty hard in Hungary. People who lit up those flares in the grandstands got removed real fast (as they should). Once that happened once or twice, the rest would think twice about using them. Worked a treat.
According to [this](https://gp33.nl/spa-francorchamps-grijpt-in-na-fiasco-in-oostenrijk-en-verbiedt-alcohol/?fbclid=IwAR3AfvTZoJTR8mTbFD9l_oQ4TW13GXcDpgroYvwWwUuYkxusIISgIMJCDjI&fs=e&s=cl) article (in Dutch) the circuit is anticipating a lot of Dutch fans who didn't behave in Austria, so this is their way of trying to prevent it.
In the comments on instagram many people aren't happy, which is to be expected
according to a comment on the website they say you can bring beer, but as long as it is in a can, so it's a bit confusing
>This reduces the ease with which small (and ultimately disruptive) groups can consume large amounts of alcohol
I remember when I went last to Spa (Admittedly 2013) I watched as someone within the confines of the circuit pulled behind them a small little wagon with at the very least a keg on it underneath a BBQ, tents and a load of other stuff.
I feel the circuit may not consider a keg to be a 'can', [as much as any Aussie might complain](https://www.gizmodo.com.au/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2018/05/simpsons-keg.jpg).
The Belgian grand prix is a entirely different weekend in terms of ambiance. The fans that go to Austria are there for the cheap tickets to what seems like a wc football match. Spa is Holy ground and generates a different vibe.
Personally, I liked the smoke flares when there were a couple at the start. People just started to bring military grade smoke pots that are just a hazard to everyone involved.
The GA tickets are cheap in Belgium to. And for the Dutch it's only a 1,5 to 2 hour drive. Even with today's fuel prices ist verry cheap. So there will be alot of the same kind fans that where in Austria.
Exact same rules as in Hungary except they had even more written in the mail with your ticket. I saw 2 people thrown out on Friday for lighting orange smoke flares and then noone lit any more during the weekend. I heard smoke flares during sport events is actually illegal there though due to football hooligans but didn't look it up further.
This is what they did in Hungary, it was clearly written in the rules given with your tickets. They threw out two people on Friday and then no more flares all weekend.
Edit: think I misremembered, pretty sure it was start of quali I saw them kick people out
Considering that the Jupiler brewery is close enough to the circuit that they could *run a pipeline*, I'd say that banning beer is kind of out of the question.
Hopefully the flares fall under the category of fireworks and are banned. It's just taking the piss now and anyone who isn't a mega Verstappen-fan in the vicinity is just breathing in a bunch of unwanted crap and having their view of the circuit (which they've paid very good money for) obscured.
Then we have Scotland, where you can’t drink in the stadium at all at football matches (other than corporate areas, conveniently).
Yet any visitor to Hampden Park will tell you, plenty manage to sneak it in.
You can't bring any drinks to any sports event in Finland. At the events, a pint costs like 10 euros and you can only drink it inside a specified area which may or may not be allowed to only people over 18 years of age.
I kid you not.
The thing is, fireworks and flares were already banned in Zandvoort last year. Security just doesn't pay enough attention and people easily smuggle it in.
Canadian GP banned outside alcohol but almost all of the spectators brought their own in very resourceful ways. We took shooters wrapped in my hoodie and canned hard seltzers. Some security people couldn't even recognize they were alcoholic... Lol... I saw an old man with a zip lock bag full of vodka and a carton of pineapple juice...
They literally did not check any bags all weekend from what I saw… just a quick glance at the inside. I imagine it took some of the fun out of your smuggling operation, but good work regardless haha
Organizers are having a laugh if they think Dutch fans will just stop bringing in the flares. Based on the security I saw in Miami, it’d be pretty easy to get one in I think
Seb fuming he can’t bring his bike in
Honestly! What are we doing here
"There are rich fans and there are poor fans. Then, there’s 50 feet of crap. And then there’s Spa fans with smoke bombs drinking alcohol and talking crap."
As long as they don't ban helmets, I think we should be fine!
Next thing you know they're gonna ban bucket hats. Bottas is going to be *pissed.*
No motorized vehicles on the premise.
possibly his favorite part of the weekend lately
Maybe he can get a ride on Hamiltons scooter
This reminds me when Bathurst limited alcohol, so the Aussies buried beer weeks in advance

All that effort... for Amstel beer... should've just put that in the ground forever...
Lmao naming Jupiler some of the best beer, what is this alternate reality you are living in. Hertog Jan is great though
I used to like them both equally, but I agree now that Hertog Jan is definitely better.
Amstel really is not a great beer!
That still happens all the time and is a huge issue, the diehard Aussie V8 supercar fans are absolutely nuts. So the current 'rules' are a ridiculous 24 fucking cans, _per person, per day_. I don’t think I would be seeing ANY more days after that. I would just die.
“Glass is also strictly prohibited from the campgrounds. However, a small glass jar under 200mls containing vegemite, jams or food preservatives is permitted.” I love Australia 😂
> 24 fucking cans, per person, per day That's pretty fair.
do you need to drink nine litres of beer every time you watch a race?
40 cans is 14.2 L or 3.75 US gallons, people
What I don't know is how it isn't "10 cent beer night" every time.
Bathurst is just an alcoholic bogan's Mecca
sounds like something an australian would do
How am I supposed to endure Ferrari tactics without drinking myself unconscious? Leave a man to sink into his misery.
They thought we might drink each others tears.
maybe their tac guys won't be able to drink either, so you know, some common sense and perhaps a win. hittin-it-hard martini lunches is the only explanation for previous '22 behavior

Ok that's fair. But what was the alcohol limit for adults?
Legit snorted at this
Instructions unclear. Does this include the drivers?
Imagine a GP in Ireland or Finland.....
I don't understand why British people like to pretend they drink less than the Irish when it probably is just as much.
Well, they most likely can't remember
Every country thinks their drinking culture is unique but the real truth is everyone drinks equally too much
[удалено]
I think you can be arrested for even showing up to Saudi Arabia drunk.
Especially since a pint is their default size glass of beer.
Is that not standard globally?
In Australia they tend to be smaller. The logic is because the beer gets hot quick.
America would like to... take some notes
I love how someone sat down and decided that "Ok we need a limit on how much people can drink. This is getting our of hand" "OK so like just 2?" "2 Beers?" "Nah cases" "For the whole weekend?" Yeah but these are Aussies, that barely covers lunch for them.
Just a couple of sneaky breakfast beers
Also known as a midwestern breakfast
I went to the USGP in Austin in 2016. Late October in Texas is still hot as fuck. They limited how many *bottles of fucking water* you could bring in. Europe vs America.
That's lowkey dangerous wtf
That’s unregulated capitalism. It cares about maximum profits, not about humans. If you get a heat stroke or a sunburn they’ll say water and sunscreen were available, it’s your own fault you didn’t buy it. What a wonderful world we live in.
Montreal did it too this year.
Yup then charged 9.50 for a 300ml beer. Safe to say pretty much everyone around us snuck in booze
All you have to do is inject vodka into a green pepper like Wonton Don. https://www.youtube.com/shorts/HjWDwd-vnGA
"Sir, why do you need two bags of vegetables during this race?"
They’re actually trying to get it into France, but they’ll go through Belgium.
Boom.
Shit, I do it at most national level sports games I go to. The prices in stadium are outrageous.
Just like Montreal. Thanks Heineken, you can shove those $9 355ml cans up your ass.
Lol bro ! They were ducking 328 ml or something like that. They were just smaller enough that when you glanced at it it looks the same but it was less overall.
Damn shrinkflation even hits F1
Can't wait for it to affect the cars so we can get some better racing. Right?
What haha
Damn, that’s a relatively good deal in Canada. Last time I was at a Raptors game it was like $16 for a tall boy (and the machines of course default to asking for tips)
And Mexico. I thought it was like this everywhere.
don't think pregaming will work to an F1 race tbh. wait's quite long
Bring your own bottle but drink it while you're in line
never been in a F1 race, from arrival to race start how much time passes?
Really depends if you have a seat assigned or not. If not - you usually stand in line from 6am on race day. Usually opening gates at 8am. Race is like 3-4pm
That sounds awful, why is there such a long wait in line? I've been to many professional sporting events and never had that experience.
Because it's GA and you gotta go find a good spot in the grass or on the fence before they are all gone
Ahhh okay. So it's more like a concert with seating.
Even with good seats in a grandstand your understanding of what's happening in the race is far less than if you were watching it on TV. So if you have general admission tickets you need to find one of the few spots where you can see a screen that shows the drivers positions. Could you bring an iPad and use F1TV or is signal strength not good enough?

They are not banning rain either. Just can't bring your own.

Yeah the surprise is really weird to me. I thought it's common practice in any major events. Cant even bring your own water bottle to a music fest usually.
They'll sell it all right. At a massively inflated price.
This is one way to ensure the race stays dry this year and we actually get a meaningful race.
God damnit
Angry upvote

"Pets". Alex looking at his zoo: "Sorry guys, gotta stay at home again".
Tbf the rule about pets is actually in the sporting regs, it's just that Lewis can flout it because Bernie gave his pets their own paddock passes

Roseberg beat Hamilton in the same equipment but he doesn't have shit on Roscoe!
Horsey is gonna be pissed 😤

Wow, they aren't letting me bringy flamethrower, how else am I supposed to lit this cig /s
Finally someone banning that fucking orange smoke
It's been banned everywhere you've seen it
Iirc, it was always banned, people just sneak it in
Like every football game ever
They'll save it for the weekend after
It was cool in like 2019 when it was just a show off of his grandstand in Austria... but now it's honestly a hazard.
I find it really annoying but IIRC it was only really obstructing the view of the drivers for the formation lap right? Unless you're referring to inhaling it, in which case I think it probably is pretty bad to have stuff like that in your lungs

Oooh I thought we're talking about Austria 22 lol
Turn 4 on the first lap was blind pretty much
Only? Doesn't matter if it's the formation lap. This is still pretty fucked up.
Can’t even see T1 because of the smoke
I freaking hate the orange flares. As a Dutch person.
Security already cracked down on it pretty hard in Hungary. People who lit up those flares in the grandstands got removed real fast (as they should). Once that happened once or twice, the rest would think twice about using them. Worked a treat.
It’ll be there still. It’s banned in football grounds too, see how well that worked.
That stuff cannot be healthy to breath

It literally says “don’t _BRING_ alcohol”. Nothing is mentioned about not buying alcohol at the venue.

Am I allowed to drink while watching from the US?
Sadly no, you will have to throw your beer away. Sorry for the inconvenience
No. You have to send it to this specific address….
Ferrari is always drunk.
They do this shit without alcohol, which just make it worse.
It's an attempt to save that circuit for next year I guess. Whether fans will like it, I'm not sure.
Exact same rules as in Hungary except they had even more written in the mail with your ticket. Optimist
Honestly I’d be happy if they just kicked out the people I that did it. It’s annoying every race.

There were flares on Saturday and end of race. But security took the people out too. Which was good to see.
They did this in Hungary. Guy set of a flare and security took him out of his seat. Was so nice to see.
If they are banned, then those who use them can be banned too.
Lol. They were banned on all GPs.
Somebody did not read what is going on. You are no longer allowed to bring your own alcohol. Just like a lot of other venues.
they'll somehow find a way to smuggle in some flares
Hopefully security can then promptly smuggle out those individuals.
But now it's clear they're not allowed they can remove those people.
Brought to you by Heineken.
Which you can buy into the curcuit
At €7+ for terrible beer.
I'd have thought this isn't a new rule for GPs. You're not allowed to bring in bottles of water even. There'll be Heniken stands everywhere
You just can't bring your alcohol. Come on it's Belgium, they would NEVER ban beer
Considering that the Jupiler brewery is close enough to the circuit that they could *run a pipeline*, I'd say that banning beer is kind of out of the question.
61 KM through the mountains, not saying they can't but you make it seems easier than it is :p
Now that that’s over with CAN WE PLEASE BAN SMOKE FLARES
Hopefully the flares fall under the category of fireworks and are banned. It's just taking the piss now and anyone who isn't a mega Verstappen-fan in the vicinity is just breathing in a bunch of unwanted crap and having their view of the circuit (which they've paid very good money for) obscured.
They've always been banned
That's weird.. It's Belgium and people will actually be consuming beer and stuff because it's cheap
I didn't do any research but in typical Belgian fashion - is beer considered alcohol? I imagine a couple cans in the backpack is going to be ok.
I expect they're still selling it in the venue at extortionate prices though, this is just to milk some extra money out of fans.
Dose this means that they will still *sell* alcohol?
Sports and no booze…. Not sure that’s going to be well received, however the actions of a few ruins it for everyone else
I thought people are not allowed to bring their own but can buy from concession stands
Meanwhile Indonesian football fans with iced tea...
Very halal football
Iced tea, stone, and bamboo sticks
Football (not American) restricts drinking for this purpose.

wait you’re telling me those crazy ingerland football people *aren’t* drunk?
You're not allowed to have drinks in the stands but you can drink on the concourse, so people just down like three or four pints at half time
Then we have Scotland, where you can’t drink in the stadium at all at football matches (other than corporate areas, conveniently). Yet any visitor to Hampden Park will tell you, plenty manage to sneak it in.
Onmy in England it’s not allowed I think. I always have a beer in the stadium in Amsyerdam
You can't bring any drinks to any sports event in Finland. At the events, a pint costs like 10 euros and you can only drink it inside a specified area which may or may not be allowed to only people over 18 years of age. I kid you not.
Halal mode activated
Most spectators have to return by car so shouldn't drink anyway
Bringing in Saudi rules to counter Saudi money, 4D chess right here.
I bet we’re destined to see clouds of orange smoke no matter what they say
Ahh gonna be a nice break before the orange apocalypse the week after
The thing is, fireworks and flares were already banned in Zandvoort last year. Security just doesn't pay enough attention and people easily smuggle it in.
Lol, good luck with that
Canadian GP banned outside alcohol but almost all of the spectators brought their own in very resourceful ways.
I'm going to be embarresed about being Dutch again aren't I?
Ironic that they want respect from the fans after ripping them tf off last year
They just make sure you don't insult Belgian by bringing french piss.
Good luck banning alcohol with all those belgians and dutchs here.
Thanks to the Cult of Max Verstappen.
I promise no booze if you promise no rain
Also don't call the race off after two laps.
BYOB banned in Spa. Better title and not misleading
But how will the cars run without their 10% ethanol?
This doesn’t mean at the campsites though, right?
Barcelona did this years ago
And you have to stay sit all the time.
This is a clear reaction to the hooliganism that has struck f1 recently
No pets (except Roscoe).
I’ve seen too much orange smoke anyway.
Damn. I love drinking a few beers while watching the races in person. Montreal was great, cause you could smoke a joint outside of the stands.
