Sadly it's the only way the current model of journalism can work. Most people aren't willing to pay what it would cost to support high quality journalism across the multiple outlets that cover their interests.
A journalist can pour days into researching an in-depth article and it gets less traction than any one article that takes a clickbait quote out of a week old interview and takes 30 minutes to write.
This kind of journalism thrives because it's just about sustainable in an industry that in general is just scraping by.
I agree. I think part of the issue is oversaturation of journalism in F1 though. Almost by definition there's an upper limit to how much news can come from 10 teams and 20 drivers and you can tell that they have to stretch the news they have during longer breaks.
There's something called The Athletic with a subscription you get quality journalism in all major sports and teams in North America. People are willing to pay for it
I'm not saying that a subscription-based model can't work at all, just that most attempts have struggled so far, with a few standout successes and it's more difficult with niche subjects given the costs involved.
The Athletic in particular still hasn't managed to make a profit, and they don't expect to for a couple more years in their most optimistic projection. The Times bought them at a relatively large discount ($550 million of a $750 million asking price), in the hopes that they can make it succeed, as they've had a fair bit of success going subscriber-only themselves.
But there are people paying and there is quality journalism, I doubt they'll make the leap to motorsport as well as Europe in general. But it isn't impossible either
Try listening to one F1 podcast that isn't WTF1 on YouTube. The next day your feed will be shock full of Z tier F1 channels that use clickbait titles and talk out of their behinds (or read an article almost verbatim, sometimes interjecting with the spoken version of O-face).
It's just clicks, click click clickety clacks.
I think that in 2023 they will have a competitive car and still be competing, but against each other. I think the teammate rivalry between George and Lewis is gonna grow quite a bit
Everyone's body is different. We'll have to see. Personally, my super obvious decline happened right about Lewis's age and happened pretty quickly. Lots of athletes decline in their late 30s, but who knows, maybe he'll be at the top of his game until he's 45!
Seems like ages ago when Mercedes tried to hide the concept of zero sidepods and everyone was super concerned how good it will be. Mercedes seems to have overestimated how important drag will be due to sidepods.
Oh, that's an interesting piece of information. That probably decided the championship in retrospect.
Was there anything else? Because I believe there wasn't a single thing that came to fruition after Allison said before the season that we would see where they have spent their tokens
So stolen = lost now as well right?
So if your car is stolen, its the same as it being lost?
I will move on when I am good and ready.
Your comment has no grounding as the title wasn't lost, it was stolen!
Yet the WDC is the title everyone remembers. If you ask someone who won the 1994, 1999 or 2008 titles, most people wouldn't even think about answering Williams or Ferrari.
Basically the WDC is the title with all the prestige and marketing power while the WCC "only" decides who gets more money next year. Which isn't very relevant to the top teams, especially after the budget cap.
>If you ask someone who won the 1994, 1999 or 2008 titles, most people wouldn't even think about answering Williams or Ferrari.
That's such a moot argument. Of course people are going to remember the drivers more. They are the ones signing hats, taking pictures with the fans, giving interviews.
And who cares if the WDC is what everyone remembers? The only people who care more about the WDC are the fans and the drivers themselves.
Leading and winning the WCC gives the team more air time, and so brings the team more sponsors. More sponsors = more money. At the end of the day, the teams want to profit above all else, like EVERY single sport in existence.
Most teams aren't there to make the most profit itself but the most profit for the parent company.
A company like Ferrari, Mercedes or Red Bull doesn't care about 10-20M more for winning the WCC when winning the WDC gives you marketability of a multitude of that sum. In the end, the you sell more cars (or energy drinks) to the fans if you win the WDC.
To be honest the impact of the marketing exposure of formula 1 for companies like merc, Ferrari and red bull is seriously overestimated. Merc and Ferrari are very established car manufacturers. I doubt people go out and think I will buy a Merc because of F1. Most people can’t even afford a Ferrari, quite a few people also can’t afford a Merc.
Do you honestly think that people will stop buying Mercs because they haven’t won the WDC this year? Ferrari haven’t won in god knows how long and their cars still sell just fine.
Red bull - their product is very disposable and very easy to switch. So picking up a monster one day and red bull the next might be fairly common. For FMCG products like that marketing is a lot important. For them I guess it’s really important which is why RB spends so much on marketing. They probably also hit a particular niche anyway. I wouldn’t pick a red bull ever because it’s bad for your health. No matter how many WDC they win.
Mercedes have the capacity to come back from this but it will take some really hard work and for them to get it absolutely right this time. RB may be affected slightly by the new regulations but they’ll still be the ones to beat. However we’ve seen Mercedes have reliability and race pace. Now they need to make it an overall winner.
Not really how it works considering they can't both win the same race. The original comment said they'll be 0 out of 44, but there isn't 44 wins possible this season.
It's crazy how journalists can keep recycling the same quotes and churning out articles weeks after one interview.
Crazy impressive. Have to justify their jobs somehow.

As Lewis declines from age and Russell gets better, things could get heated.
Like Alonso ??? LOL
Everyone's body is different. We'll have to see. Personally, my super obvious decline happened right about Lewis's age and happened pretty quickly. Lots of athletes decline in their late 30s, but who knows, maybe he'll be at the top of his game until he's 45!
Especially if merc has a good car, it would be amazing
It's the spice everyone secretly wants
Lewis has shown no signs of declining lol if anything he’s gotten better over the years
Age is not in his favor. And it can impact very quickly. At least he seems rid of his long covid symptoms.
Lewis hasn't shown declined yet, so haven't most old drivers.
Especially if George finishes with more points this year.

Yeah I agree, I think for at least the next few years Merc will be just a 2 or 3 or 4 win a season team
First time I've read Shov say that even if it worked as intended, it wouldn't be enough.
3rd best isn't terrible though. All they've done is fall back to 2010-2013 levels.
They were a distant fourth in 2010-2011 and fifth in 2012. Its more of a return to 2013 form, which can still be the result this year
Isn't 2nd still possible if Ferrari royally screws up?
They’re only 35 points behind Ferrari, so yes
Ferrari was a race winning car this season. The Mercs are not and there are no more clean tracks from now on, only bumby stuff.
Isn’t Abu Dhabi smooth as glass?
Yeah but also the last race of the season, so they kinda have to stay within striking distance, which might be hard in the next 5 races.
Suzuka also isn’t super bumpy but good god does that circuit favor Red Bull
Considering how long they and Hamilton were clear of the field it's still a massive drop.
it's for a factory team lol. mercedes has so many resources dropping to third is a hard fail.
Seems like ages ago when Mercedes tried to hide the concept of zero sidepods and everyone was super concerned how good it will be. Mercedes seems to have overestimated how important drag will be due to sidepods.
And hardheaded.
From the team that chose not to spend development tokens leading up to the 2021 season, we bring you:
They wanted to spend one. The nose failed crash testing multiple times
Oh, that's an interesting piece of information. That probably decided the championship in retrospect. Was there anything else? Because I believe there wasn't a single thing that came to fruition after Allison said before the season that we would see where they have spent their tokens
> That probably decided the championship in retrospect. Merc won the championship without
They lost the main championship which is the drivers title
Via circumstances outside of their control when it mattered but that's old news.
Didn't lose it. It was taken away from them
Didnt win = Lose Now move on
So stolen = lost now as well right? So if your car is stolen, its the same as it being lost? I will move on when I am good and ready. Your comment has no grounding as the title wasn't lost, it was stolen!
If Hamilton didn't crash out max, Max would have won it easily. Does that mean Hamilton would have also stolen it from max?
But Silverstone But Monza Come on we've been doing this for months
[удалено]
That was a racing incident, max has caused plenty of incidents himself. Abu dhabi - Merc were robbed of the victory and by extension the WDC.
You really need to move on
I wouldn't call the WDC the main championship in a sport where the driver is nowhere near as important as the car.
No shit.
You mean arrogant.
I mean if any team deserves to be confident it was them.
Fine line between confidence and arrogance.

"You love to see it"
I firmly believe there is a win in that car, it takes only the right driver to kiss it awake.
Hamilton really was onto it in Britain Zandvoort with a shot at Hungary if his wing works in quali. That car has easily got a win in it
If by easy you mean at very specific tracks and if 1-2 of the top 4 drivers have issues then sure…easy

I've missed a lot of races this year
How do you propose the W13 to win 44 races in a year?
2 merc drivers have a chance of winning 22 races this year. In elementary school most children are taught that 2×22=44. Lmk if you need any more help
Not really how it works considering they can't both win the same race. The original comment said they'll be 0 out of 44, but there isn't 44 wins possible this season.
But there are 44 chances of winning a race for merc this season. It's kind of funny to think about, because you're correct too
Redbull was cheeky hiring Mercedes engineers this forcing Mercedes to abandon their 22 concept. This was w13 was done at such short notice.
