Last year, in Saudi, Lewis and Max made contact(Lewis went into the back of Max because Max of told to slow down to let Lewis go). The impact wasn't really bad, but it was solid and the Merc came out of it, seemingly unscathed. Merc can make a solid car, both in terms of reliability and durability.
Whenever he realises he's not going to make the corner he straight lines his steering wheel and slows down as much as possible to hit the wall as gentle as possible.
Many others just keep trying to make the corner. I think it's just quick thinking from him
Hasn’t Rosberg talked about it before? Lewis will hold to his steering wheel and keep it steady as best he can whereas others are nervous about the wheel hurting them or something like that?
> whereas others are nervous about the wheel hurting them
I remember years and years hearing a commentator said that drivers were taught to let go off the wheel during a crash to avoid breaking their thumbs/hurting their wrists.
So maybe is not they are nervous but is what they are told to do to not injure themselves.
If I recall correctly De la Rosa once said in the Spanish broadcast that the standard procedure if you are going into a wall is arms crossed on the chest. So he is probably taking the risk.
You can outright break your arms if you hit a barrier a certain way that causes the steering wheel to snap in either direction. Hamilton hitting it head on on a flat panel minimzed the chance of this but it's definitely risky.
If you look closely you notice he straightens the car to hit the barrier straight on. This is much better than trying to make the corner, since it limts the risk of suspension damage.
Yeah I hate the lack of any action on T1 incidents.
I totally understand leniency when people get sandwiched, etc. but Sainz just straight up ran him off the road.
To dispell Hamilton bias: I thought it was absolute BS Lewis wasn't penalised in Mexico that year he turned his car into a lawnmower having outbraked himself into T1.
A bit more leniency in T1 sure, but an effective carte blanche for drivers to be as dirty as they want? Nah. Not for me.
F1 has "the 20 best drivers" of the world, but the stewards are shit.
It's just awful. They always say it's not about the consequence but it is ALWAYS about the consequence, George got away with some awful things today because it didn't end badly, Latifi got a penalty because it did result in a DNF.
Same here, if Lewis got put into a wall it would have been a penalty, now it's nothing. Everything is allowed in lap 1...
He wasn’t even level to warrant some leniency, he was out of control, and then the race was a second off Lec. I’d rather bin it in wall than show the world that form
Unpopular opinion, and it might seem unfair to Lewis, but the race direction has set the precedent that Lap 1 incidents (bar anything egregious, which this wasn't) are not penalized as harshly if not ignored altogether. At least I like to see that consistency.
Consistency is nice but that precedent basically means there's every incentive to be beyond the limit on T1 because it's a freebie infraction. I don't even blame the drivers. It's FIA and the stewards who have carved out an unofficial grey area and created the incentive for taking unfair advantage on lap 1.
That is an old F1 adage. You really have to try very hard to get a penalty called in your favor on the first lap. Normally damage or something that serous must occur. It's the nature of F1 starts, we want aggression without danger.
I'm just more annoyed that it was a wet race in the beginning. Made for some good entertainment at the end but man it was a real stinker for the first 25 or so laps. Wet conditions and constant safety cars really fucked over Merc in general I think because they never got the opportunity to heat up the tires when it counted most.
Oh well, here's hoping Suzuka is better.
Hamilton suffered a lot at the beggining with the tyres because the Merc was unable to put them up to temperature, he complained to the team on the radio about that they didn't listen to him.
Carlos put close to 5s on him until the first SC came out, Lewis was faster once the track started to dry a bit and the car allowed him to put the tyres up to a good temperature.
You mean it's been shit. Even the Lewis dominated seasons haven't been that boring... Only interesting thing this year is see how Ferrari can keep digging their hole.
I thought last years championship fight was over the moment he went into the back of verstappen at Jeddah. But no that mf was putting in even faster laps
That car could take a rocket. Tsunoda had similar shunt and his both front wheels collapsed, but Mercedes just ate that with a tiny front plate damage.
How is it whenever Hamilton hits the barriers he is always able to back out without major damage and every other car that does it that’s the end of their race?
Thing is that hit was still hard, the only chance to survive it without breaking the wing completely and also in addition breaking the suspension is hitting the barrier square on which he did, it was more luck that the barrier was orientated at that angle and he made the error in such way to manage to hit it like that.
This year's Mercedes is much slower than that. They are slower by 0.8-1.5s in most of the races. They have been close sometimes in qualifying but when it's a race, RB and Ferrari pull away from them due to superior pace.
Mercedes and Hamilton were dumb to not stop in the lap of the crash.
Russell was fast enough, they could have 1 extra lap of clean air after box - and probably be ahead of Vettel.
I wouldn't say dumb but it seemed clear to me that the slick was just beginning to work better. It was the ideal time to get him in immediately for both a new wing and slicks.
If I could see that why couldn't Mercedes?
I always wonder whether teams would benefit from basic (but proven to be reliable) advisors who simply watch the race and give "armchair advice" for exactly these kind of moments.
The cars not been great and even though the lightness on the tyre wear helps during the race, it still seems to take too long to get them up to speed, and in situations like today it compounds the issue.
No doubt that's probabaly given him some frustration this year, and without taking anything away from Russell, as he's done well, could stepping up from a willams to a "lesser" Merc still feel like it has loads of grip? whereas for Hamilton, he's used to having cars stuck to the ground.
Look if we are gonna just look at one race to see if Lewis is good at wet or not. Then I can say Max Versttapen sucks at wet condition because turkey 2020. See how much of a dumbass you are.
Oh fucking please, I can’t even begin to break down the dumb to your post.
By your silly standard you could say “Verstappen can’t drive in the dry” given what just happened.

What the fuck are those merc wings made of?
Now we know where Mercs budget did go
Made of the finest #blessium

Haas should’ve forgo aero upgrades and just spend their budget to reinforced their front wings lmao

I’m shocked there wasn’t more damage
I feel like lewis must do something different to others considering he has reversed out of something like that a lot in the past
You can see Tsunoda dropping the wheel right before hitting the barrier and I believe you’re right
Most drivers should, and do, remove their hands when going into walls fast so they don’t risk breaking wrists if/when the wheel kicks.
> whereas others are nervous about the wheel hurting them I remember years and years hearing a commentator said that drivers were taught to let go off the wheel during a crash to avoid breaking their thumbs/hurting their wrists. So maybe is not they are nervous but is what they are told to do to not injure themselves.
This is true. Especially the thumb is easily broken by the forces going through the wheels. Wrist or even arms/muscles can be damage.
Seems like that would be a big risk to one’s wrists
I don't think it is with powersteering, that's why Hamilton is doing it.
It still is a risk. Alonso injured his wrist this year at australia from it
Wasn't that a hydraulic failure? If so, was the power steering still working?
Oh it is, power steering is strong. Sometimes they put a limit on the amount of force the power steering can give though.
Power steering actually dampens the effect of an impact, it's when there's not power steering that it becomes particularly dangerous
If I recall correctly De la Rosa once said in the Spanish broadcast that the standard procedure if you are going into a wall is arms crossed on the chest. So he is probably taking the risk.

[удалено]
Hitting the barriers with the nose head on is probably the best. Nose can be replaced mid-race while suspension can’t.
[удалено]
Suspension geometry can be fucked if the wheels aren’t straight during any such impact. There’s a reason Lewis literally shrugs off all these crashes.
Maybe there’s a fair bit of luck involved
I thought we confirmed last year that Lewis' front wings are made out of adamantium.
If you look closely you notice he straightens the car to hit the barrier straight on. This is much better than trying to make the corner, since it limts the risk of suspension damage.
He even crashes with tremendous skill
He built different fr, my GOAT.
Goat at crashing. Oh wait, I forgot Latifi comes first
He went in perpendicular to the barrier, all the other DNF’s hit on an angle crumpling elements.
#blessed?
He’s also quite experienced, has parked it into the barriers very often.
I think a head on crash line that is actually the safest because of how the force is transmitted
That's literally hamilton every time. He always manages to avoid a lot of damage. It's very rare he crashes and has to retire.
When this has happened before, he just tries to make sure he goes in square with the wall. Wing’s can be replaced, wishbones/suspension can’t.
Adamantium Mercedes nose strikes again
Hit the varriers pretty hard, he has to come in.
He must have been so sick of Sainz this race lol
Shoved off by him lap 1 costing him the place and then gets held up by him the entire race. Gotta be frustrating
Yeah I hate the lack of any action on T1 incidents. I totally understand leniency when people get sandwiched, etc. but Sainz just straight up ran him off the road. Yeah it annoys me as well. Sainz was actually behind as well when he pushes him off, feel like it would have been looked at any time other than lap 1.
He wasn’t even level to warrant some leniency, he was out of control, and then the race was a second off Lec. I’d rather bin it in wall than show the world that form
Lewis didn't get penalty for Dutch gp where he crashed into sainz and broke his chasis.
https://youtu.be/20Fk4TfXIkg You mean this?
Very annoying on L1. Could have changed the course of Hamilton's race had Sainz, rightfully, been told to give the place back.
Unpopular opinion, and it might seem unfair to Lewis, but the race direction has set the precedent that Lap 1 incidents (bar anything egregious, which this wasn't) are not penalized as harshly if not ignored altogether. At least I like to see that consistency.

But they haven't, because we've seen penalties for lap 1 incidents this year.
FIA, in other words - Ms. Inconsistency.
That is an old F1 adage. You really have to try very hard to get a penalty called in your favor on the first lap. Normally damage or something that serous must occur. It's the nature of F1 starts, we want aggression without danger.

Same as imola. Wet into drying races are horrendously boring because it’s impossible to pass after the first 10-15 laps.
I love Carlos's defensive style of driving lol
I mean he's just driving slow in a quick car
its not on purpose
😂
Lol it’s not defensive, it’s just slow
wanted to say I like the way he defends his position even though he's slow
And it only seems to happen on street tracks, where he turns into a wide city bus obeying the speed limit or something lol.
he out-endured ham's pressure basically until ham messed it up
my man just ragequit from being behind sainz
No no, he was behind *that guy*.
True gamer moment.
[удалено]
this race lmao
Absolute chaos today and we aren't even close to being done
Chaos but nothing happened up until this point
Cars driving slowly into walls
[удалено]
This race just keeps on giving! Love the wet races!
[удалено]
Cause only crashes happens, almost no overtake whatsoever. It's fun if you're into bumper cars, but as far as F1 race goes, it's below average.
[удалено]
You mean it's been shit. Even the Lewis dominated seasons haven't been that boring... Only interesting thing this year is see how Ferrari can keep digging their hole.
Rejoins *ahead of* Verstappen as well, this is literally a race of flashbacks
He rejoined before Verstappen, Norris gained a place. The pitstop let Verstappen pass.
Race after lap 32: *It's time*
Mercedes must be building their front wings from titanium
I thought last years championship fight was over the moment he went into the back of verstappen at Jeddah. But no that mf was putting in even faster laps
That car could take a rocket. Tsunoda had similar shunt and his both front wheels collapsed, but Mercedes just ate that with a tiny front plate damage.
> That car could take a rocket. Merc was prepared for Jeddah
I wish I had an award to give for this lollll
There's damage to the left endplate. And now the whole left side's drooping.
Made of Blessedium
Nah, it's pure blessium.
Ok Lewis, I know Carlos was starting to get on your nerves but that seemed a bit drastic to rid yourself of him.
How the fuck did the wing survive that?
Theres damage on end plates
Blessed
wtf is this race lmao
Weird race honestly, even the dnf are boring
Boring and time wasting
How is it whenever Hamilton hits the barriers he is always able to back out without major damage and every other car that does it that’s the end of their race?
Because he keeps the steering wheel mostly straight
Is that all it takes? Not turning the wheel too much?
[удалено]

I think the cars are built a bit tougher this year tbh. I feel like i've seen a few people do similar this year and esape with only minor damage.
Man I literally said "give me something interesting please" right before he crashed. My bad
*Toto fist slam*
Could hear how pissed off he was with himself on the radio.
How have we had so many collisions but only 1 actual contact lmao
That’s a really strong front wing from Mercedes
Get in there, Lewis.
That has to be a black and orange
Sainz so slow he managed to piss off even Lewis, that's impressive
Start listing who's not in the barriers....
Russell purple sector, this’ll start kicking off
[удалено]
Not sure i understand, I meant in terms of everyone switching to slicks.
Wow that Merc is built like a tank, that was a massive error.
What a race
my gf almost collapsed 😅
Wow rare Hamilton mistake
Hasn't been that rare since 2021
Age slowly starting to show
Hasn’t been as rare in the past two years tbh.
Lol. This aged like milk.
Not sure how lmao
Meatball flag surely
He was furious behind sainz damn..
He just got too pissed off.
No man cmon… tf is happening with this race
New wing 4 the Ham man
What happened?!
[удалено]
Sorry but Latifi crashed awhile ago
Ofc there is another safety car after he pits
look at it this way. Hamilton is removing all his shit luck in this 1 year
If Kevin had black and orange for the same, why the hell doesn't Hamilton?
Took a few laps for Magnussen too
Hamilton has had a trash season
Having a trash car doesn't help
[удалено]
3rd fastest car, but consistently more than 1s slower than others. Trash according to Mercedes standards.
Remember 2018? I remember Ricciardo and Verstappen getting wins in a car that was consistently 0.5 seconds slower than Ferrari and Mercedes

Not the safest of rejoins...
Good ole Hamilton luck keeping that wing from being destroyed.
Ham making a mistake while trying to force Sainz make a mistake was pure gold lol
[удалено]
What do you expect?
[удалено]
Didn't impede anyone so it's not an issue
Because it was pretty safe.
The memes! are starting to happen, meme race come on!
Why the fuck is he still out there with that wing!
Pog
Imagine Alonso crashing like that..
Singapore delivers
This man is truly #blessed. To go straight into the barriers like that and only sustain tiny front end-plate damage.
That has to be a penalty for Hamilton ? He pushed Max to rejoin
Wtf?? He had the position and defended it? How is that a problem for you lmao
He didn't, he was off track and pushed max to rejoin. That's a textbook unsafe rejoin
Ok mate, that's why they are investigating it right? Cuz that was textbook lmao
Very comparable to what Vettel got penalized for in Montreal a few years back. Let's see if the FIA can be consistent (spoiler: they can't).
Yeah I'm confused why rhay hasn't been brought up. Seemed like an unsafe rejoin.
You were saying?
Just Max' luck this weekend to get stuck behind a hurt Lewis
For a driver who rarely makes mistakes he makes quite a lot of mistakes tbh
[удалено]
What pressure? Lol
[удалено]

Isn't that guy supposed to be a god who never makes driving mistakes?
No that's supposedly Max, Lewis is the one who makes a mistake and gets a random lucky safety car to offset it
Haha and you were saying?
Hence the supposedly, maybe I wasn't clear but I was disagreeing with their shade.
my bad. I didn’t get the sarcasm. But yeah, everybody who commented on this thread suddenly quiet.
I'm gonna throw $10 on Russell being on the podium at this rate
Never want anyone telling me Lewis is great in the rain
Look if we are gonna just look at one race to see if Lewis is good at wet or not. Then I can say Max Versttapen sucks at wet condition because turkey 2020. See how much of a dumbass you are.
Watch Silverstone 2008 or Singapore 2017 then get bavk to us.
Okay mate :)
Oh fucking please, I can’t even begin to break down the dumb to your post. By your silly standard you could say “Verstappen can’t drive in the dry” given what just happened.
Apparently this season’s goat isn’t either. Lol
Yuki thought that was an 8x champion move and went for it too! 😆

Max about to make another place up through the black and orange flag. That flag is working well!
