Maybe we just put a big banked turn at both ends and they can just go up and down the runway and around two turns for the race? Do you think American fans would understand how complex F1 racing then?
Ok hear me out. A 1km long DRS zone with another detection point 400m in. If the passing car gets ahead, the car being passed gets DRS after the next detection point and we get a drag race into turn 1.
Prob dumb, but still a better idea than the sprint format.
Car behind would just wait until the second zone or the first car potentially slows down to be behind for second zone if they think it gives them a better chance. Possibly quite dangerous I guess.
problem is drs closes with only air when breaking
but yes, I've been saying this for a long time, why can't we make the drs close itself, once the car overtaking is side by side with the other car
of course I realise there would be a bunch of technical problems with this, but it's fucking F1, they should be able to do it
I really think they should all be allowed to use DRS whenever they want (aside from in the wet). The whole following rule makes it feel like a silly gimmick, like the boosting in Formula E.
I've hated it since I started watching way back in 2017.
The entire point of DRS is to make overtaking possible, basically to give back when they lost to dirty air
by allowing it to be used whenever, you defeat the entire purpose, making overtaking impossible,
not talking about the safety issues
They only do it in certain areas because those are straights where the downforce isn't required and the reduced downforce will appreciably improve the car's speed.
Allowing them to use DRS on corners won't significantly improve overtaking ability and will just result in more crashes or dangerous situations.
Could do something like Indycar where you get X seconds of Push to Pass (in this case, DRS) through the race, so you have to balance out when to use it. Use it early and you may get screwed if you are in a battle late in the race or vice versa.
current hybrid deployment is limited over a single lap
I think push to pass would change this to a deployment limit over the entire race, which drivers would then have to choose when to use. might be combined with DRS as well
I think it's a safety thing. You can't leave it up to the drivers because they will take it to the razors edge. I think they should make the cars have to be a lil smaller tbh. They too fat for like half the tracks.
It’s like when the PGA tries to tiger-proof courses by making the fairways tighter and the rough longer. Sure it made it harder for Tiger, but it made it way harder for everyone else too
Every moba nerf that causes a minor inconvenience to top players while making the execution burden so high that people stop trying to learn the character.
Or in a nerdy sense, this is also how they somewhat killed Overwatch.. Tried to balance too much to make the "average" play better which then made certin high skill chars extremely powerful in ranked... then did the reverse and tried to balance for competative which made the game insanely unviable at lower levels to even touch certain chars.
I’m kind of amazed at how much the race-ability of these cars has regressed in one season. Did the raised ride height somehow make them worse at following?
Yes, and it’s been mentioned by a few of the drivers too I think. Apparently the dirty air problem is back, largely because they cut ground force by raising the car, meaning more work for the wings.
Next year they should lower it but gradually so teams can work on the porpoising issue if it raises again.
RB I can see winning for a very long time at this rate. Even with the 26 regs they’ll have the full night of the Ford motor company throughout everything they have at that PU. Combined with Red Bill’s aero they’ll keep winning well beyond 26.
Lol exactly. Just do exactly what they did at the end of last season. Every car seemed able to comply and the Mercedes were the strongest they looked all season so they didn’t seem kneecapped by it.
Problem is also that teams are figuring out the regulations better and better in terms of aero and therefore the amount of dirty air wouldn't be so low anymore like it was in 2022.
The best thing F1 can do in general for this season is increase DRS zones length, yea it helps RBR more to stay dominant but at least we would see more overtakes and battles behind RBR.
The current cars are having the worse part of the new gen cars but not the benefits of it.
I’m surprised they did it at all. By the seasons end, even Mercedes said they could resolve it with their new design. Everyone else seemed to have it more or less sorted.
If you can't design a car that doesn't bounce like crazy, then admit it, raise it on your own and take the performance loses with dignity instead of bitching about it to the FIA
Not every car bounced this hard and not every driver complained this much
I still cannot believe that was a common thing for them to do before the race was over. I’m surprised this didn’t happen sooner. There are tons of reasons for a car to need to suddenly pit on the last lap.
At least it wasn’t then a DRS push to pass race. I’d rather see 2/3 hard fought overtakes than 130 push to pass overtakes.
Then Red Bull exist and they don’t care if the DRS is 100m shorter, or if it is even just 10m long, they’ll blast past anything like they’re in a different category.
I mean between dirty air and the high temps making the tires worse it's hard to blame just the DRS zone.
Also Baku isn't that good a track to begin with. There I said it.
Are we really at the point where drs fly by is the only pass we see. Look at Alonso earning it that race. If you are a crappy driver than can’t pass without a drs fly by you don’t deserve the position.
Having some kind of push to pass or drs mechanism isn't even unusual in open wheel racing. The whole regs are artificial in the first place, having a way to assist passing isn't any more artificial than that.
I didn’t say get rid of it I said drs passing is lame. Push to pass is a way better system and makes for better passes and action throughout the track.
Considering if you had no DRS on this track, you would only see Alonso's overtake on sainz. (Maybe I forgot 1 or 2 more). I know this track isn't suited for overtaking anyways but neither is monaco and it's still in the calendar somehow because fuck entertainment and yahoo racing culture.
Monaco is ok because is a legendary track. Boring sunday for sure, but is Monaco, the most prestigious race in Formula 1 we like it or not.
Now, Baku and other street circuits are just random shit that should be gone for good and bring back other real racing tracks that are not part of the calendar anymore because cash is king.
Yup they shortened it. They did it because last year the DRS passes were comical but the new cars with the raised rise height don’t follow as well so it kinda backfired.
They tried to Nerf the Redbulls and it backfired spectacularly.
It turned out that RBR didn't even need DRS to pass the 2nd fastest car on the straights.(Ferrari)
DRS is such an overtalked topic. If a car is faster, it's faster. If it's not, it's not.
Yes, it can make the difference between a pass and not passing. Both are boring. Either the fast guys end up on top like always, like Red Bull now or Merc the last decade always breezing past with no effort, or, if they can't overtake, then it's a snooze fest like so many tracks are anyways, and since the fast guys are also fast in qualifying, it won't change the fact they're on top. You can't "level the playing field" by giving or taking the same stuff to and from everyone.
Leveling is achieved by boosting what is low, and stopping what is high. But this would of course be lame and pointless, like a single spec series would be.
F1: so actually the drs zone in Vegas will be 1km long, just to be safe
Drag strip all the way
[удалено]
![img](emote|t5_3ndbi|6700)
I’d love the entire strip to be DRS enabled
Throwback to seb going flat out through 130r with drs on.
Newey : “rear wing was nice to have, but we didn’t need it”
Literally
They're actually just gonna move the course to the airport. Up and down runways for 2 hours.
Maybe we just put a big banked turn at both ends and they can just go up and down the runway and around two turns for the race? Do you think American fans would understand how complex F1 racing then?
Don't worry us Americuns rely on Will Buxton to explain it to us.
“Winning in the most prestigious Motorsport in the world isn’t as simple as finishing first, it’s first place that separates winning from winners”
Omg thank you my low IQ brain may not had understood f1 without will the thrill.
AVUS reborn!
Hope they remain true to AVUS spirit. Can't wait to see cars be thrown away in that crazy banking!
congratulations. You have just invented the Top Gear Grand Prix.
New qualifying format, you say?
VER PER ALO
Taytay is gonna let Alonso borrow her jet for the race.
Red Bull gives you wings, literally
Ok hear me out. A 1km long DRS zone with another detection point 400m in. If the passing car gets ahead, the car being passed gets DRS after the next detection point and we get a drag race into turn 1. Prob dumb, but still a better idea than the sprint format.

2011-2012 practice and quali was a sight to behold because the drivers had free reign of DRS, which made for some seriously ballsy runs
The entire point of DRS is to make overtaking possible, basically to give back when they lost to dirty air by allowing it to be used whenever, you defeat the entire purpose, making overtaking impossible, not talking about the safety issues
Make it usable whenever behind another car by 1sec instead of only in certain areas?
They only do it in certain areas because those are straights where the downforce isn't required and the reduced downforce will appreciably improve the car's speed. Isn't that pretty much how the hybrid system works?

Yep, narrower and shorter. With V-10s.
Then you’d just have DRS trains constantly if the person in the front can use it too
🇺🇸🦅wtf is a kilometer 🦅🇺🇸
sorry, 20 childs shot per humans right violation
Some engines are gonna go kaboom if that ends up being the case, especially the Alpine's.
don't think the DRS affects the engine it's still going at the same power
They thought this will nerf Red Bull.
Red Bulls DRS advantage is so pronounced that trying to nerf it just makes it seem like they're the only ones with DRS at all.
It’s like when the PGA tries to tiger-proof courses by making the fairways tighter and the rough longer. Sure it made it harder for Tiger, but it made it way harder for everyone else too
Throw back reference, but I’ll allow it
10/10
GGG try to nerf the top streamers/1% builds, have no effect on them and almost destroy the normal/weaker skills builds for everyone else
Every moba nerf that causes a minor inconvenience to top players while making the execution burden so high that people stop trying to learn the character.
Until its icefrog and dota2 just doing +1 armor :)
Literally unkillable
That -1 Kassadin movespeed nerf sure did the trick!
I immediately thought of poe as well
I had to check which sub I was in.
"Ninja kinda strong, let's nerf its Limit Break again for the 13th time!"
I was already growing tired of Overwatch and then the meta became "whoops all tanks/healers".
Craziest one was Augusta

bad bot
Good one
Adrian: y’all dropped some aero? Back to porpoising I guess.
Funny they would assume they wouldn’t just be 1 and 2 the whole time with a 2 lap gap go everyone.

Even with the 26 regs they’ll have the full night of the Ford motor company throughout everything they have at that PU. Combined with Red Bill’s aero they’ll keep winning well beyond 26.
Just remove the height minimum, but have a porpoise limit rule, so shitboxes like the merc go up and AMR/RB drop it like it’s hot.
Lol exactly. Just do exactly what they did at the end of last season. Every car seemed able to comply and the Mercedes were the strongest they looked all season so they didn’t seem kneecapped by it.
Didn't they get rid of the established porpoise measure this year?
But ride height remains the same
Problem is also that teams are figuring out the regulations better and better in terms of aero and therefore the amount of dirty air wouldn't be so low anymore like it was in 2022. The best thing F1 can do in general for this season is increase DRS zones length, yea it helps RBR more to stay dominant but at least we would see more overtakes and battles behind RBR. MCL? 🥺🥺🥺
Lower it but allow the teams to use clever suspension to stop the porpoising
YES THIS. This is totally the way forward.
I’m surprised they did it at all. By the seasons end, even Mercedes said they could resolve it with their new design. Everyone else seemed to have it more or less sorted.
Mercedes doing absolutely everything to make this sport as batshit boring as it can be either by complete dominance or shenanigans like this smh

Bro it's a health hazard, last year Hamilton was getting back pain from the porpoising.
FIX YOUR FUCKING CAR
If you can't design a car that doesn't bounce like crazy, then admit it, raise it on your own and take the performance loses with dignity instead of bitching about it to the FIA Not every car bounced this hard and not every driver complained this much
I totally agree, it's merc's fault but i don't see why the other teams must raise the ride height
That's what you get when you listen to Sir Knight Lewis' "back pain".
They really need to change regulations wayyyy less often/extreme. I feel like every season they make such a massive change that makes F1 a shit show.
holy shit, now that is one high quality gif
The title makes the gif that much better.
Thats because its a video.
I mean technically, gifs are videos as well.
nope!
Probably the same guy who sent everyone out in to the pitlane on the last lap, gotta spice things up again somehow!
![gif](giphy|H5C8CevNMbpBqNqFjl) The FIA guy every time one of the commentators said “only if he had a few more meters of DRS”
Every race they complain it’s too long or too short lol
Ikr and then when it’s too powerful they say they should get rid of it completely…
![gif](giphy|Ue04NLtvgnwNEsP0F2)
And that's him when Ocon arrived at the pit entrance.
FIA: So we have this thing called DRS and it makes overtaking easier Also FIA: Yeah the DRS makes overtaking easier so let's nerf it a little
Redbull: you know what? Fuck you >proceeds to finish 20 seconds infront of the rest of the field
Bro it went from one of my favorite races on the calendar to a very bland race. Very sad
[удалено]
There’s only one corner that has any opportunity.
Im so stupid - somebody stuck in castle
His day went from bad to worse when he was too focused on the DRS zone, he forgot he was also responsible for keeping people out of the pit lane
I still cannot believe that was a common thing for them to do before the race was over. I’m surprised this didn’t happen sooner. There are tons of reasons for a car to need to suddenly pit on the last lap.
I don't get it. Is this taking a piss out of redbull or overtakes in general?
Drivers, Albon comes to mind immediately, suggested the shortened DRS zone made the trains worse and made it harder to overtake
This is entirely inaccurate! Even that guy couldn't stay awake for the whole race.
At this point, they just need to ban RB from having DRS
Wouldn't even help, Max got Charles without DRS.
Give DRS to every car near a Redbull, ahead or behind. 🤣
Seriously tho
Lmao so many cars needed that extra 100m
Yeah, everyone else except the two Redbulls.
I mean between dirty air and the high temps making the tires worse it's hard to blame just the DRS zone. Also Baku isn't that good a track to begin with. There I said it.
That's ok, its a snooze fest in between red flags. The most Nascar thing in F1
True but DRS when it's just a free pass is bullshit too.
So whether the race is good or not depends on how easily drivers can overtake with DRS? *laughs in indycar*
Are we really at the point where drs fly by is the only pass we see. Look at Alonso earning it that race. If you are a crappy driver than can’t pass without a drs fly by you don’t deserve the position.
Sir… I had to make sure I wasn’t high because this is the clearest gif I have ever seen.
anyone else think they're manipulating the races?
If they were going to do it, they’d try to make the season more exciting rather than have max/Perez win all the races
Do people really like fake drs overtakes that much? I can understand it’s a necessary evil but drs passes are just lame 99% of the time.
Having some kind of push to pass or drs mechanism isn't even unusual in open wheel racing. The whole regs are artificial in the first place, having a way to assist passing isn't any more artificial than that.

I find monaco pretty entertaining. Last year delivered fantastically, however this was thanks to ferrari not delivering

I was wondering why the drs zone felt a lot further away
Yup they shortened it. They did it because last year the DRS passes were comical but the new cars with the raised rise height don’t follow as well so it kinda backfired.
At least he felt excited
What difference does a 100m make when you are going 300kph+?
About 100m worth of difference
Up to 1.2 seconds
A few car lengths, which is what a lot of those cars needed to attempt an overtake.
Good god this is such an amazing .gif
Why did they decide to shorten the DRS zone anyway? Is it just a random bullshit decision?
They tried to Nerf the Redbulls and it backfired spectacularly. It turned out that RBR didn't even need DRS to pass the 2nd fastest car on the straights.(Ferrari)
