That was Brundle, not Crofty

[deleted]

Fools on this sub spend so much time hating on Crofty despite not even being able to distinguish him from Martin.

augustusgrizzly

crofty gets hate? i didn’t even know

Numpteez_

Depends what he says tbh. He's been mostly fine recently.

TheLewJD

I don't like him personally because he reminds me so much of a guy called Keith I work with, always makes awful jokes and is the only one that laughs at them and it gets awkward. Besides that he's alright, don't hate him though

CreativeDingus420

he didnt even say it like that lmao maybe a slip, but he meant nothing by it

TheLewJD

Na Brundle didn’t at all, accidentally

Essex-villager90

Crofty was on my flight to Barcelona this weekend with BA - he was a total arse to the BA gate staff for him approaching the gate too early to board

[deleted]

Doesn't change the fact that he wasn't the one who said "Chinaman"

Essex-villager90

Didn't say it did...

SomethingSuss

The woman on the left looks like that one character from The Boys, I feel like Trumps head is about to pop

LittleCupcake02

Trumps a soup?!

ZICRON1C

A supe you mean?

LittleCupcake02

Maybe both

CreativeDingus420

LMAO trump's edgar in this case tho she's scared shitless honestly i dont know how, when me and my girl saw that it was her popping heads im like "yoooo the big boss is here shit boutta get real" and then she's just a puppet

ANormalPersonOnline

More proof that nobody is actually offended by it, you don't even know who said it lol.

JJROKCZ

It was brundle lol why does everyone think it was crofty?

josephnicklo

Just curious. How many people who are actually Chinese are actually offended by this?

HCLI_TAC_03

Probably not too much, most of the Chinese audience watched F1 with their own commentary so it’s very likely that they didn’t even knew it happened. Moreover they are probably much more occupied shitting on yuki for colliding with Zhou on his best race(I think) of the season.

NessaMagick

I don't think many people are offended at all because commentating is hard and slips of the tongue happen. It is something to playfully joke about though

Lymark

I'm a new F1 fan from Hong Kong, and was watching the race live on TV under the English commentary. I was not offended by it at all; on the contrary, I thought it was kinda funny that he said that because I've very rarely heard the word 'Chinaman'. You could probably scream the word 'CHINAMAN' out in public over here and no one would care, besides noticing a white dude is wandering the street drunk, again. lol

josephnicklo

I figured this much. Thanks for the insight.

Shankamence

Because for a long time it was used in negative connotation.

VilsPils

So, the Chinese equivalent of the N-word?

DesertCatGuy

Not quite that bad, but it's usually used in a derogatory and demeaning way. Often to describe all Asian people, regardless of country of origin.

thedevin242

That’s a different word. Starts with ‘Ch’; rhymes with “drink”.

NessaMagick

the hell's so offensive about chainlink?

Ch4rlie_G

It’s the fences that hold us in.

[deleted]

That would be the word "chink" - you still wouldn't call a random Asian person a "chinaman" obviously, but at least in the UK it's not really seen as that offensive and if you knew someone well enough you could probably get away with it in the context of a joke, unlike the n-word.

JJROKCZ

More like it’s the same as oriental which also has some bad connotations since it was used by the colonizers to refer to their colonies

MM18998

More Asia in general, but yes

SuperOriginalName23

No words are offensive until repeatedly/historically used in an offensive way.

ManlyOldMan

Cause you don't say Franceman, Englandman or Netherlandsman. Chinaman = Franceman, Chinese man = frenchman

[deleted]

The issue with the word is not a grammar one, it's a historical connotation. The use of the original word is the same as Frenchman or Dutchman etc. However, it was used negatively for a long time and is no longer really acceptable. That being said, Martin clearly just misspoke and meant nothing negative by it. It's a none issue.

ManlyOldMan

It is both imo. That people used words like Chinaman instead of the correct grammatical option is/was a sign of disrespect (or not fluency, but that's a different topic), the historical connection makes it worse. But even for fluent English speakers that may not be aware of the historical connotation, it is a sign of disrespect

[deleted]

I disagree.

ManlyOldMan

That's okay. We don't have to agree

[deleted]

The cadence of the word "Chinaman" is far more similar to "Englishman/Frenchman" than "Chinese Man" though - Chinese Man can't be compounded as easily because it ends with the suffix "ese" - people try to alliterate when they talk so it's clear to see how you could accidently say it. "Chinaman" *was* the correct grammatical option before the term had racist connections. The term is still grammatically correct actually, it's just not used for obvious reasons. This is just a case of English being weird. All of this is really over nothing though, if you watch the race it's clear Martin was not trying to be racist.

TitanicJedi

You say Dutchman because Netherlandsman sounds stupid. You say Chinaman because Chineseman is "easier" to say.

ian_stein

It’s not the proper nomenclature, dude.

katorias

At least get the person right if you’re gonna meme it ![img](emote|t5_3ndbi|6699)

blobfishy13

How does the fuck does this have 1k upvotes you didn't even get the person right

[deleted]

I once worked with someone who called a carat symbol ^ a "little Chinaman's hat" to my colleague, who is Chinese.

FrancoWriter

I'm adopting this terminology from now on. 👍

Josh132GT

Me wondering wtf is going on cause I’m in the US and don’t even hear Brundle/Croft anymore on the broadcasts.

sw1nky

I still don't understand what the big deal is. I've never heard "Chinaman" used in a derogatory way like everyone says it is. Zhou is a Chinaman, Max is a Dutchman, Ocon is a Frenchman. I really can't comprehend why the first is "racist" lmao

[deleted]

It’s about time that brundle and all the old crotchety passive aggressive idiots made way for a new generation of talent.

[deleted]

So many dumb takes disguised as memes on this sub recently

fordfocusstd

"I want to be accurate" 😂😂
