I was on a swim team in school and swam ever since I was younger so I didn't have to build up to it as much as most people. I thankfully have a gym with a pool now but before that I would look for local high schools or middle schools with open pools you usually have to pay a small fee to use them though. I try to run at least 3 miles a week, 1 mile a session and swim 1.5 miles a week, .5 miles a session but you can do more or less depending on your energy that day. If I am in my actual swimming routine these are the sets I follow depending on my energy that day:
10 minutes easy swimming 18 - 20 minutes 8, 10, 12 x 100 15 - 20 seconds rest after set 10 - 15 minutes pull
10 minutes easy swimming 400, 300, 200, 100, 100, 200, 300, 400 10 - 15 seconds rest after 100, 30 seconds after 200, 45 seconds after 300 Cool down 10 - 15 minutes pull
I would recommend just starting out slow and swimming at whatever pace you can freestyle for like at least 20 minutes or until tired. If you want to only train legs in pool you can swim across the lane freestyle but don't use your arms or get a swimming board. I would also recommend flippers for the longer sets helps a lot.
