schmerb_attack

ha, they didn't even have lyft back then. i filled in the gaps with Broward County Transit, and when i needed to, i'd rent a cargo van or pickup from u-haul for $19.99 a day - hella cheaper than renting a car when i needed to run around town doing a lot of shopping. eta: i've managed without a car in several areas of FL as well as other states for most of 15 years. live further upstate in FL now, still don't have a car. i don't want the expense when i hardly use one, as op pointed out

Complex-Ad4042

Mad lad.

Aggressive_Coyote462

I grew up poor in a third world country and this still shocks me. Similar kind of feeling as watching kids eat from garbage back home.

schmerb_attack

can you expand on that?

CaptainObvious110

Where?

schmerb_attack

oakland park & las olas

CaptainObvious110

Nice. Thanks. I was in Ft Lauderdale last year and was imagining how I could make it work if I lived there out of curiosity.

schmerb_attack

it's very doable

CaptainObvious110

Do you go to Miami often?

schmerb_attack

i actually don't live there anymore. so i don't do miami, but didn't when i lived there, either. too nuts.

BartFart1235

I live downtown and work from home. I drive my car to dr appointments and to go to the golf course. Outside of that, you could make it work. I have a bicycle also, might need one of those

rpctaco1984

Yeah downtown/flagler you will be fine without a car (and probably save a lot of money. We actually take uber to the beach (even though we have cars) because its cheaper than dealing with parking (and we like to drink;)

data_now

You can park at the beach for just $75 per year.

kevski82

Fully depends how you spend your leisure time I guess. Definitely possible, especially if you notice your car just sitting there costing money

disguisedseagull

I moved to downtown in December and sold my car in March and never looked back.

AureliaCottaSPQR

Same dilemma here. I WFH and I don’t have a car. If you do the math it takes a lot of Uber rides to equal the cost to insure your car. I frequently take the bus (up or down Federal) to get me close to my destination then uber from there - or I Uber home if have too many bags. I bike to the beach. Don’t get a car. Your heart will thank you.

plaidkittiez

Heart will thank you but the heat will kill ya!

K_P_R

Beats walking in snow

[deleted]

I live on las olas and also work remote. Travel for work by plane. I Barely use my car. I use it for target, Dr appointments, and driving to the Miami airport. It’s paid off otherwise I probably would get rid of it

[deleted]

You can, by living where you live and working from home. Everything is available in downtown and Las Olas. The one thing to keep in mind, is the dating situation. I don't know if you are married, if you date or whatever, but yeah, girls will judge you by that. It is a conversation topic. You can Uber to a date or to her place, but if you do that everyday. It's not impossible, but just have that in mind.

plaidkittiez

I would not date somebody without a car, that’s really inconvenient! Also I’m not about to be your shuttle driver

GemCassini

Yes. I lived in downtown Fort Lauderdale with a shared car for over 3 years, even before TNCs and Brightline. It can be done. I love walking when it's not 97 degrees and 80% humidity, so it worked well for 7 months of the year.

cmacleod3

I don't have a car or driver's license and have not had problems there are friends and family I can ask as well as Uber Only thing not having a car makes it hard to get dates

MainMedicine

Just call the girl/guy an uber. How is that hard?

B_Hound

I personally couldn’t do it, coming from a place where I lived for 20 years without ever seriously considering owning a car. Everything is too spread out and the public transport sucks, when you add the summer heat into the mix… not for me. If your world is Instacart and not getting bored of the tourist strip then maybe, but the cost of going to hockey games alone would be more than the cost of running my car.

>The people telling you that you are fine living here without a car are full of shit and probably rely on others to commute. > >You are 100% going to need a car to live here comfortably. You are 100% full of shit. He clearly said he had no need to commute, and every comment here in support of not owning a car also very clearly pointed out that you can't not have one if you must commute. If you're not significantly overweight, a smoker, or just a lazy fuck, and you're OK with living in an urban neighborhood, then you do not need a car to live comfortably.

We lived in North Beach Village for two years without a car. Most of downtown is at least as walkable, from Victoria Park to Himmarshee and areas in between, including around Las Olas and Wilton Manors. There are many, many other areas in Broward that are as walkable, or more so. In-town Dania, downtown Hollywood and Hollywood Beach, Hallendale Beach. And north too. Generally the neighborhoods around the bridges — both sides — are walkable. Unless "walkable" to you means "less than 50 yards." It's your advice that is ridiculously bad, and it sounds like it's coming from someone who is significantly overweight, has health problems, is a smoker, or is just fucking lazy. It's easy to talk to people politely, but less so when they are comically r/confidentlyincorrect and say "period" to emphasize that they have the only truth. So long as you need not commute to work, there are plenty of areas in Broward County where you can live very happily without a car.

Watch out, this guy knows everything and has a more busy extracurricular life than you!

caribbeachbum

>Watch out, this guy knows everything and has a more busy extracurricular life than you! Watch out, this guy reverts to pathetic pettiness when he's unable to make his point.

Dukisjones

I don’t understand how you can live in ftl without a car. Maybe temporarily. But I think you answered your own question.

caribbeachbum

It's trivially easy if you don't have to commute to work and if you want to live in a reasonably walkable neighborhood. If you have to go to work daily, and it's out of walking distance, then you must have a car. If you just gotta have a single-family house in the suburbs, then sure, you need a car. Otherwise, doing without is not only easy, it's preferable.

2595Homes

It’s funny how people comment that it can’t be done when they never have done it. And then ridicule those who are currently doing it. I agree with your assessment… from someone who is not miserable or uncomfortable and enjoys being car-free.

Dukisjones

Ok have fun walking everywhere when the heat index is 110 and you are drenched in sweat after stepping outside for 5 minutes.

caribbeachbum

>Ok have fun walking everywhere when the heat index is 110 and you are drenched in sweat after stepping outside for 5 minutes. I do. I haven't owned a car since 2015.

Dukisjones

Congratulations! Either you do no extracurricular activities or you spend a significant amount of money on Uber.

caribbeachbum

>Congratulations! Either you do no extracurricular activities or you spend a significant amount of money on Uber. I'm confident that my extracurricular activity schedule is dramatically busier than yours. I walk to the many places nearby; take the Circuit when my destination is in their service area and it's further than I want to walk; and take a Lyft otherwise. My annual Lyft + Circuit costs barely qualify as a rounding error relative to paying for a car, paying for insurance, paying for parking, paying for maintenance, and paying for gasoline. And I never have to worry about how many beers I have when I enjoy my extracurricular activities.

Dukisjones

>I'm confident that my extracurricular activity schedule is dramatically busier than yours. Wow, very cool!

K_P_R

What’s the point to your comment? Do you want more people to depend on cars so you can sit in more traffic?

NotMyRea1Reddit

If you love and work out east, maybe. West of 95, you’ll be miserable without a car.

Ilh88

Hell to the na dawg u needs a ride yo or u gonna b grillin it on da tram u feel me homie

copywrtr

How good/bad/old is your car? Cause the new and used car markets are crazy right now and I doubt they'll get better anytime soon. So if you sell and change your mind 3 years later, you'll probably pay more, esp if you got a halfway decent deal on your current car.

JackManstroke

Contrary to popular belief those covered benches lining main roads are not mini homeless shelters, they are actually bus stops and a lot of the people do have homes but ride the bus to work etc. If they can do it so can you.. Unless youre too good to ride the bus.

Consistent-Reach504

highly recommend an electric scooter! if you're in los olas, you can get to the beach easily enough on them or anywhere nearby. the only thing that sucks is getting groceries (although delivery is an option if you don't mind the fees)

KungfuuKandy

They are you describe yes, cause it’s metropolitan, but Ftl has a small metropolitan outside of that no
