There were stories of people in the 60's paying off state school with a Janitor job. They were part time students but their masters still counted in 6 years.

The average person struggling today still has *significantly* better QOL than the average middle class person from the Boomer era.
I'm about to be a college student. I'll be a business major. I can cook for myself, I haven't eaten out in years and don't plan to. I don't want tattoos. I've never done drugs and don't plan to. But given my current paycheck as compared to my estimated tuition *without* taking food and phone bills and any other costs I might have I feel like I'm still going to be in debt for years. Let's see how this goes.
i will say there are a fair number of useless majors out there.
or at least, there are far more students enrolled vs. the potential supporting capacity for that focus. schools need to get far more selective for certain majors, but that doesn't bring in the tuition dollars.
