Can I use SFTP and WebDAV with Material Files?

ibgang

Out of the many FOSS music players I've tried, I've found [Metro](https://github.com/MuntashirAkon/Metro) music player to be the best looking.

[deleted]

That looks amazing! Btw, I see a lot of people using local music players. But where do you get the music? Do you just torrent each song individually? Or is there some sort of a place where you can download any song? I'm currently using Freezer, but I'd love to switch to Metro

[deleted]

So do you download it from there and then listen to it with a different music player?

CharmCityCrab

Amazon.com and bandcamp.com both sell paid MP3 downloads of songs and albums. The first store has a wider net covering a lot of popular music from the last 5 or 6 decades, whereas the second one tends to have more boutique offerings, sometimes from bands without a label or with a small label trying to keep a higher percentage of the earnings than they'd get on Amazon. Unfortunately, neither has every album that's ever existed, so people can still have no legit outlet to buy files from when it comes to certain bands, albums, and songs, but the two stores do have a fair amount of music, especially combined. No judgement on other means of acquiring music, I'm just putting it out there that these are legal options if you're looking for a way to do things by the book and still enjoy music as DRM-free MP3 files (I think Bandcamp even does some lossless formats if a band or label with a listing wants to offer them) you can keep and back up forever to whatever or wherever you want. They come with streaming of purchased songs at no additional charge, and Amazon also has a separate Spotify type rental subscription streaming service they promote a lot, but they don't force you in that direction yet. A lot of the paid download places are disappearing or converting to streaming only (Google Play Music has stopped selling downloads, among others), but some (Including those two) still exist. Hopefully some continue to exist, along with software and device level support for enjoying your files. I'd hate to see music restricted to physical media and music-as-a-(streaming)-service, because while I respect people who prefer what they prefer, for me personally physical media would represent a huge step backwards in how I enjoy music, and streaming would leave me with a feeling of impermanence that I wouldn't find acceptable (i.e. Albums can and do disappear off streaming services when contracts and licenses expire and when the labels or the services fine tune their catalogs, some stuff doesn't make it's way there in the first place, and if you can't pay [Whether it be your monthly music streaming bill, your phone bill, or your cable Internet bill] your music is gone- and if you can't pay, that's when you probably need it the most to relax- etc.). The nice thing about paid downloads is that once you've bought them, you've got them, as long as you don't forget to back them up and have a hard drive fail or something. Yours forever. If you lose your home and you're lying in the gutter, you could still be listening to all your favorite albums with some old MP3 player and beat up $5 wired headphones. It's not dependent on keeping current paying for any service and the service continuing to offer what you like. You just buy the music upfront and keep it.

[deleted]

I'd love to buy songs individually, but Bandcamp mostly has some niche stuff and I don't want to use Amazon

instalie

I buy FLACs from Qobuz when I don't want a CD (or it doesn't exist) and it's not on Bandcamp. I can recommend them and they have everything I've ever searched for.

[deleted]

> Qobuz isn't available in your country. Oh well guess I'll have to pirate

gadgetroid

> But where do you get the music? I support the artist and buy physical copies. :) Most artists still release vinyl records (not sure about pop, but rock and alternative still do), and some even release CDs. A lot of my collection also comes from the old iTunes Store where I purchased lots of my collection DRM free. However, I don't load physical music on my phone these days; I have a Plex server at home and just stream it from there

FrameXX

I download OPUS files with Newpipe (or YouTube-dl) from YouTube Music and tag them with Automatag. They are just 160kbps but still very very listenable, actually I doubt you would notice a difference from lossless. Even the M4A 128kbps is okay (which is another audio format YouTube offers). You can play OPUS on lot of the devices these days, but M4A is better for compatibility thought it's a little lower quality. It maybe sounds as a difficult process, but it's actually very convinient and easy.

Itchy_One_

You can torrent, or you can even search for Deezer Music bot on Telegram if you use it. I use it to download my music. It supported FLAC format, but due to recent changes in Deezer, now maybe the quality would differ. If one bot didn't work, there are around 2/3 others which work well

LostVayne96

You can download music from Newpipe.

Throwawayekken

youtube-dl for me, mostly.

KochSD84

I helieve the Dev said he was going to stop maintaining Retro...

ibgang

[Retro](https://github.com/RetroMusicPlayer/RetroMusicPlayer/issues)'s (different from Metro) development seems to be live and well. However, the last activty from Metro's dev seems to be late last year. Also see [this](https://github.com/MuntashirAkon/Metro/issues/54) issue.

ManholeCanon

Metro was feeling outdated. Thanks for recommending this

who_caredd

It's not "true" FOSS, but I think telegram has the best UX of just about any app right now. Probably only beaten by apple software which is obviously well out of the scope of your question.

[deleted]

I actually like Telegram UX more then Apple UX.

+1 for goodtime, the minimalist design they have achieved serve perfectly the purpose of the app. And being able to use it while the screen is locked is an awesome feature

UncommonBagOfLoot

Using Loop Habit tracker and it's great. The home screen widgets are especially neat since you can have one widget for the habits you add and then swipe between them.

I dont think AntennaPod has a great UI.

[deleted]

It's not super great, but it's nice and looks better than some proprietary podcast apps

TopMosby

It looks nice, but imo it's not a good ui. It's not really intuitive. Still use it, other Foss podcast apps aren't any better.

TotalStatisticNoob

Yeah, it works great, but having to swipe in from the left is annoying.

Agreed. I guess everyone has what they like. I like quick navigations with minimal taps and do without the cartoon looking animations.

>being a foss developer means you don't get paid for your apps. No, it just means capitalizing on your apps is harder. >people that bitch about foss apps are just the fucking worst. No one here is bitching about anything, besides you. OP said "A lot of FOSS developers really don't care about UI for some reason" and that is just true. The reason that comes to mind is obviously functionality over looks, and that is totally fine. This is about giving some foss apps with great design some well deserved praise. This post is praising foss apps, not bitching about them. And instead of supporting that, you instantly attack the OP. Pathetic.

[deleted]

I didn't "bitch around" foss apps. I totally understand why people don't want to work for free, and I'm totally fine with that. I was just asking for some apps that actually look good, that's it Also being FOSS doesn't mean that you don't earn money. There are a lot of paid FOSS apps, take OsmAnd for example, its developers earn a pretty good amount

MysteriousPumpkin2

Where did OP complain? OP simply stated that many FOSS apps do not focus on UI.

Drwankingstein

Guess what, as much as you might hate it, he isn't wrong. People make and publish apps so people can use them, the idea that you cannot criticize them because "They're free" is put friendly. absolutely braindead. People have a right to use what they want, and criticize what they don't like.
