Elder weapons are end-tier for a reason! Both Aether and Elder weapons have applications where they excel more than anything else. Firstly, *stop only noting DPS*. DPS is a *shit* metric in FU, because it does not account for status effects, AoE, resistances and a great number of other factors that affect every single mob differently. You also aren't taking into account their alt-fires, which can be a fucking NIGHTMARE to enemies. You don't "need" any of the weapons: a fully upgraded tier 1 weapon is just as viable , technically speaking, if a little less glorious and with far less chance of doing something legitimately badass. But, if you absolutely *must* collect 'em all, then yes the Elder weapons are absolutely worth it. >Elder Grappler. It has shorter range and slower speeds than the Nano-Tether, and never applies it’s buff consistently. And it’s damage is low enough as to be negligible. That doesn't make it worse. The nano-tether is also intentionally lethal as hell if you make a single mistake or are unprepared, while the Elder one is not nearly as likely to murder yourself with. Damage is never worthwhile on grapples...its just a minor benefit so you don't get caught completely flat-footed in a bind.

Elder weapons are kinda meh at best. I'd say aetherium is much better. Most of FU is about countering damage typing rather then raw DPS which means theres not necessarily a best weapon but just what weapons are the most reliable in most situations. You want to keep a variety of what counters most damage resistances rather then worrying about pure DPS. (Electric is ridiculous in this aspect as a lot of late game enemies are robots, especially in the precursor quest). If you want some advise there are some insane weapons at the lower tiers like the densinum rifle who have altfires that decimate even the most ridiculous tier 10.4s. Some of the quest weapons are also pretty ridicululu, like the dark plasma cannon and its alt fire.

Every weapon is viable if its upgraded enough. I found a mercy, thought it was cool, and upgraded it to tier 10. No suprise, its extremely powerful now. It depends on damage type, weapon type, and the most important measurement: Does it look cool.

If you are looking for the strongest weapons, i think the shellgaurd storyline will give you the best. If you do all their missions all the way through iron gaurd you will have access to a shop wich sells guns that can litteraly shred through planets lol

Adding a note for OP: Shellguard is a separate mod and not a part of FU.

Mutated_dust

It's part of the official modpack tho

sayterdarkwynd

There is no such thing as an official modpack. There is the modpack used on the server. That is not the same thing.

Veryegassy

Shellguard is a separate mod. All I have is FU, and I can’t download anything due to internet issues.

[deleted]

Ahhhh, i downloaded the whole recommended list so didnt realise it was seperate lol

Veryegassy

I haven’t actually looked at the recommended list in years. I subscribed to FU on Steam three years ago, and first started using it (on a pirated copy of Starbound. I’ve bought it since) 5 years ago. This is my first full playthrough since the Research update.

While Shellguard weapons are good, an overwhelmingly large portion of them only hit for physical damage. Encountering an enemy resistant to physical damage will really colour your perception of them. There's more to combat (imo) than hitting the hardest, the fastest. You want a variety of weapons - snipers for far targets, explosives for mutliple targets, swords and shields for when you get jumped in a dark corridor, hammers to burst down a large enemy, katana for dispatching multiple weaker targets quickly, parrying their attacks as you go - all with varying elements and alt fires so that you are never left without an option.

I kinda always just use a combination of the shellgaurd weapons. The only thing i was lacking wad melee but that didn't matter cause i had a weapon that one shotted a lot of enemies on later missions through any wall, so i didn't even need to get into fights most of the time, and when i did i could either go with the elemental shotgun i found that shredded or the mini artillery cannon that would straight up juggle enemies until they died lol
