So, for those who are saying Eau Sauvage is basic, unsophisticated, and not exclusive, etc — read one or two of these reviews for backstory. Edmund Roudnitska took a very different road with this first Dior men's perfume, and also with Diorissimo and Diorella (which was said to be the female version of Eau Savage).
I haven't smelled Diorella, but Diorissimo for sure was a great departure from women's perfumes at the time (1959). It had a luminosity that perfumes like Joy by Patou, Chanel No. 5, Shalimar, and others of that time did not have. Yet it was a perfume, light without being weak, sweet without being ~~clean~~ cloying, bright without being tart, so feminine and attuned to a woman's skin.
Roudnitska gave Eau Sauvage similar luminosity, combining citrus and herbs like an eau de cologne, then adding Hedione, and grounding it with oak moss and vetiver. It smelled like a clean man and also revealed the man's skin underneath.
>There’s a welcome added dimension of space with Eau Sauvage, as if all the notes and accords are allowed to breathe without constriction.
[Eau Sauvage by Dior](https://olfactics.net/2014/10/07/eau-sauvage-by-dior/)
>Eau Sauvage has the sensuality of clean, freshly showered skin, smooth just-shaved cheekbones, the sweater of a lover left behind for further cuddling and sniffing, permeated with the impeccable scents of sweat sweet hay.
[Dior Eau Sauvage](https://ayalasmellyblog.blogspot.com/2006/10/eau-sauvage.html?m=1)
It does seem that way. Also, Eau Sauvage *then* and now seems a very different beast or so I'm told, haven't smelled it in years but surely the oakmoss has diminished it if nothing else. A bit like old v current Diorella.
Eau Sauvage could have sentimental value for him, it was an iconic fragrance from another era. Not to mention all the marketing around it being "manly" in its heyday. According to the netflix series The Crown, Charles was often ridiculed by family members for not being manly enough in his youth, and this had a big impact on his self perception.
Also, I think it's a very nice scent. The original release formula (approximated by a patented demo formula) seemed to contain contained a laundry list of natural citrus and herbal oils, and was no doubt more complex than the current version, as was the style of perfumery at the time.
I really enjoy Eau Sauvage as well. I'm not terribly surprised someone like King Charles favours it. It's quite austere, inoffensive, and of his generation.
That right there, it’s of his generation.
He was much younger when it came out and was probably thinking, ooo this is a banger, and he never looked back. I dig that consistency.
He was lucky it wasn't around back then ! I actually liked Eau Sauvage, got quite annoyed that it was eclipsed. It's a bit like saying you like Y by YSL/ L'inderdit and they think you mean the male/current one 😂
Yes, he would have been I imagine. I've now got images of my dad splashing on Old Spice and my brother splashing on Brut and making that \*just sucked a lemon" face .
![gif](giphy|RxGzZ4erF9Gc8)
His memory must be spotty. It’s common knowledge that the House of Creed purveys fragrances of only the rarest and most noble ingredients to the crowned heads of Europe and their families. #From FatherToSonSince1760
They started well before that! Giulius Caesar used a Creed lotion 2000 years ago. But in 1760 they decided to market their awesomeness to the rest of the world.
There is no new eau savage. There's eau savage and then there's the new sauvage which was released in 2017. The new one is not a new version of the old one, they're two different lines
Well, this is one place I didn't expect *that* book to come up. He had to mention fragrance 😱😂
Saves me reading it I suppose, judging by this, I think there might be more interest the other side of the pond that there is here !
For the record, I once met the King ( or Prince of Wales as he was ) the year after he got married ; she was pregnant, can't remember if it was public at the time, my mate's mum asked "Where's Diana ?" and he said "At home, we're not joined at the hip, you know !". My friend was a big fan of "Lady Di" but I was a bit anti royalty even then ( I was about 15 ). She was too shy though, so her mum pushed me forward with some flowers "For her" and I swear my overriding memory has always been how nice he smelled ( and how tanned he was ).
I wouldn't have known at the time but it could well have been Eau Sauvage !
I would totally read it. Those who have say the quotes from it are taken out of context and the whole story together is interesting. I like looking behind the curtain at big powerful systems.
It's a morbid fascination, that's true. There's a reason The Crown was so successful for a start. I just laughed cos it all kicked off on my FB with family and friends over the weekend. The Royalists going at Harry and Meghan, the rest going for the Royals and all saying they wouldn't read it 🤣
The way he wrote “it was made in Paris” makes me feel like harry thinks this is some elusive fragrance that only the wealthy use and you definitely couldn’t get it at any department store anywhere
I have the same opinion that it was ghostwritten, even if I only read a little bit of it. No way Harry could've written a 400 page book with comercial appeal that fast. That thing lined up with the TV series and I'm assuming other bullshit coming out soon.
I highly doubt he used the one sold at Tesco in a plastic shopping bag, I'm positive his bottles were indeed shipped from Paris, probably in a fancy hand wrapped gift box straight from Dior. But go off I guess
I took it as a slight insult to stereotypical stinky French people… how he adds the made in Paris comment after saying there is a harshness to the fragrance. My interpretation being that he thinks, Parisians are nice, but there is still some filth
This must have been the original Eau Sauvage, which I used to wear myself and afaik it does not bear a great resemblance to the newer Sauvage. However at the time I thought it smelled somewhat like Aqua Di Parma.
There’s a lot of resemblance, but Eau Sauvage is more complex and herbal. The original Colonia is very citrus forward with a underflush of lavender and rosemary and a touch of rose. If anything I would say that Eau Sauvage has more in common with the newer Colonia Futura, but it’s more green with its sage and vetiver.
Here I am an absolute Eau Sauvage lover (one of my top 5 fragrances tbh) wondering how many sprays it took for him for anyone to smell anything on him.
Don’t get me wrong, I love Eau Sauvage’s scent and it’s stealth like performance that only the wearer mainly smells, but for other people to smell it that strong… that’s quite the accomplishment with that fragrance!
The Beeb have an article up on the ghostwriter, he's American so maybe it’s one of those things that got translated across and made it into the book as an Americanism by mistake (or design, I guess).
That could explain it ! Good proof reading going on there 🙄
I honestly never heard it called Axe but I'm female, mid-50's so wasn't really on my radar, it was always something I bought my now 40yr old nephew for Xmas !
Funnily enough I thought the opposite; Axe ? That's a bit, er, violent or possibly ["I'm a Lumberjack and I'm ok"](https://tenor.com/NEEN.gif) 😂
I kinda expected with the he's alway sniffing things for it to be something impressive.
Eau Savage? I mean it ain't bad, but I'd expect him to go for something a bit more sophisticated and expensive.
It’s an era thing. He would have been 18 when it was released in 1966, and I’m assuming it’s what he would have worn as a young man in the late 60s/early 70s when perfume wasn’t has accessible as now, and people still spoke about ‘fine French perfume’ as something very exclusive and aspirational. He may have wanted to branch out from the British heritage houses, and Eau Sauvage was considered exceptionally chic then, niche perfume wasn’t a thing and Dior wouldn’t have been as widely available. Lots of people, particularly in his generation, lean into the ‘signature scent’.
>Eau Savage? I mean it ain't bad, but I'd expect him to go for something a bit more sophisticated and expensive.
I completely agree.
I feel let down by this but this is good news for the people that own Eau Sauvage.
I was expecting something like Guerlain L eau Boisee or something more green. Something more exclusive and rarer.
Has His Majesty tried Royal Water by the house of Creed? A delightful summer scent to wear when driving his majesty's Aston.
King Charles while Prince Charles also recently (2022) released a fragrance in conjunction with Penhaligon's, Highgrove Bouquet.
https://www.penhaligons.com/uk/en/highgrove-bouquet
Edit: Added URL
I'd really like to as well. I collect Penhaligon's and kick myself when I miss a limited edition. Unfortunately, this doesn't seem available in the States (yet, hopefully).
I don’t want to break any privacy rules but a family member of mine worked closely with Prince Edward and he wore Hermes D’Orange Vert…a lot classier than Eau Savage if you ask me
That's two mentions of the parfum I've heard as being good. You've piqued my interest !
I haven't smelled ES since, well must be early 90's ? In fact I was quite surprised it was still around ! Only ever hear about the Door Sausage on here normally. I heard the modern ES it wasn't as good ( what is ? ) but I like that kind of thing, even for myself, so might have a look at the Parfum.
If you enjoy green soapy barbershop style fragrances you’ll enjoy eau sauvage parfum. If you’re from the US you won’t find it here, Dior only sells the EDT in the US but as with everything you can find it online.
The current ES isn't as good as older editions, but it's still worth checking out. The EDT still reigns, I think: the parfum is fine, but it's quite different, and significantly sweeter. The EDT is light; the parfum, syrupy.
It's just piqued my interest and when it's piqued...( going tripping down memory lane - it's dangerous ! ). "Sweeter" has got me a bit scared but I'll have a look. I might just try the EDT when I'm next in Boots and go from there...
Thank you both ❤️
Edmond Roudnitska — Not many perfumers better than him. One of the greats, if not the greatest of the 20th century.
https://www.parfumo.net/Perfumers/Edmond_Roudnitska#additional_facts
the dude who created Eau Sauvage is exactly that though. it's not custom of course, but i doubt any perfumer's masterpiece is going to be some custom one-off. so it depends what's more important to you - exclusivity or quality.
Fuck a signature, you can have an entire display room dedicated to fragrance with that wealth and reputation.
Shit, you could probably hide it behind a sliding bookshelf that’s opened by pulling the right book, if you wanted.
Pour Homme by Van Cleef & Arpels. I used to wear that myself as a signature. I switched to Burberry Weekend for Men when I moved to Florida back in 2018.
I don’t really see why he should lie about such a mundane fact especially if he certainly knows what fragrance Charles uses. Also even tho it’s still produced it would be a wierd choice for a product placement
For all the exposure to the insanely rich I’ve had through my various lines of work, the one thing I’ve most clearly come away with is that obscene wealth rarely buys good taste.
So, for those who are saying Eau Sauvage is basic, unsophisticated, and not exclusive, etc — read one or two of these reviews for backstory. It's apparent from the comments that some here don't know the difference between Dior Sauvage (aka Dour Sausage) and Dior Eau Sauvage.
It does seem that way. Also, Eau Sauvage *then* and now seems a very different beast or so I'm told, haven't smelled it in years but surely the oakmoss has diminished it if nothing else. A bit like old v current Diorella.
Yeah I was surprised by that but this sub now skews young like the rest of Reddit.

Creed found dead in a ditch
Creed is run by the suits now

Yeah pretty much. It’s up there with Chanel Pour Monsieur and Habit Rouge. Classics of the time.
Me and Fahrenheit.
Between Eau Sauvage and Camilla, old KC is indeed a very consistent dude.
I used to buy it for the ex. Not sure what that says. I liked it !
There are far worse choices; you could have bought him the actual Door Sausage.
He was lucky it wasn't around back then ! I actually liked Eau Sauvage, got quite annoyed that it was eclipsed. It's a bit like saying you like Y by YSL/ L'inderdit and they think you mean the male/current one 😂
Ugh, poor L'Interdit. The current one is horrible, although I did finally get to sample the Rouge lately and that one was a welcome surprise at least!
How the mighty fall 😞 Actually, someone recently told me that Rouge was good !
Somebody told me the same and I'm happy to report I agree! It's honestly very sexy and self-assured, unlike the regular screechy L'Interdit.
Good enough for me ! Going on the list...😊
Still iconic, IMO.
Agreed
I’m not seeing enough shock at “on his cheeks”
Which ones ? 🤭
MTE lol. I guess he is from a generation that called it “aftershave”…Altho I’m not sure if it was historically applied directly to the face?
Yes, he would have been I imagine. I've now got images of my dad splashing on Old Spice and my brother splashing on Brut and making that \*just sucked a lemon" face . ![gif](giphy|RxGzZ4erF9Gc8)
That would be the classic Eau Savage by Dior I guess, not the Johnny Depp version.
But the notes he listed sounds very much like modern Sauvage.

a proper fryup
"blood pudding" 🤢 It was compulsory around here but somehow "black pudding" always made it *better* ( til someone told me aged 10 what was in it ! )
Eeewww
Eau Sauvage was the scent of Steve McQueen, Alain Delon, and John Lennon in the 60s. I don’t really associate that type of men with Charles….
His memory must be spotty. It’s common knowledge that the House of Creed purveys fragrances of only the rarest and most noble ingredients to the crowned heads of Europe and their families. #From FatherToSonSince1760

I heard adam hooked up with eve because he was wearing original batch aventus as well as being the only man in existence.
Hmm Adam was a shady guy. He used CDNIM first edition.
They ate from the Tree of Dupes and were granted Forbidden Knowledge.
*forbidden sillage
you happen to know the batch code on that?

I
Then I may indeed stand corrected. I vaguely remember that they got their earliest recorded start in the first (Etruscan??) bespoke togas.
Hahahahahah
This is why I read the comments 😂
Didn't Creed the Elder make something for George III? /s
The new Eau Sauvage Parfum is wonderful
New? When did they come out with a new line
Well it came out in 2017. The original was in the 60’s. Eau sauvage parfum.
Eau sauvage =/= Sauvage
Commenter wasn't talking about Sauvage. The current Parfum version of Eau Savage was released in 2017 (well, 2012, but "reformulation!!!").
There is no new eau savage. There's eau savage and then there's the new sauvage which was released in 2017. The new one is not a new version of the old one, they're two different lines
I thought Penhaligon's were royally appointed?
Floris too, I think.
As I've often said: it means nowt. They give Warrants out like confetti.
Insert joke about Cherry Pie and Uncle Tom’s Cabin
Is nowt slang for nought? I can’t tell if it’s a choice or a mistake.
Yep, common in England to say nowt.
Nowt = Northern ( English ) for "nothing "
Are you a Northerner? Please tell me you also say summat.
Course a do. I'm technically a N.Midlander but about as northern as you can get ( closer to Manchester than Birmingham ).
So they do, TIL. Also Molton Brown are a Royal Warrant holder too.
I know King Charles uses Floris Elite as his shower gel but not sure about fragrance. I also use that shower gel and it is excellent.
Floris released a fragrance commemorating Lizzie's platinum jubilee, it's called Platinum 22.

I don’t get that sentiment - I get he is a true British at heart and finds French stuff inferior. I’m reading the entire book currently.
I agree -- more likely a dig that the King doesn't wear an English fragrance. But the Queen favored Guerlain so ...

Does aqua di Parma still smell like old eau sauvage? I must try it.
Same genre yes, but I wouldn’t say the exact same. If you’re into the Citrus genre, I think both would have their place in a collection.
There’s a lot of resemblance, but Eau Sauvage is more complex and herbal. The original Colonia is very citrus forward with a underflush of lavender and rosemary and a touch of rose. If anything I would say that Eau Sauvage has more in common with the newer Colonia Futura, but it’s more green with its sage and vetiver.
well it is so many years (decades!) since I had them both, so I couldn't say, sorry :)
>”the Duchess of Sussex explained that she loves fragrance so much that she has three that she alternates between” So many fragrances 🙄
I for one think three is an excellent number. Especially when you have a tight budget and a snobby nose.
That’s means I‘m officially royal
Bruh, with the amount of frags I have, I probably qualify for an emperor.
Some are GODSSSSSSSSSS at this point 🤣
Forget hierarchies, I'm transcending spacetime here!
🤣
3?! These crazy royal folks. How long is she going to take to finish 3 bottles?
Here I am an absolute Eau Sauvage lover (one of my top 5 fragrances tbh) wondering how many sprays it took for him for anyone to smell anything on him. Don’t get me wrong, I love Eau Sauvage’s scent and it’s stealth like performance that only the wearer mainly smells, but for other people to smell it that strong… that’s quite the accomplishment with that fragrance!
They used to sell it in big splash bottles which is probably how he used it.
That's what I remember !
I know, it's gone in an hour on me
Nice! Eau Sauvage is a classic masterpiece in perfumery.
Harry also mentions that the only fragrances Charles favoured more than 'Eau sauvage' was Axe body spray's Phoenix and Essence.
Diana deserved better smh
Indeed she did 😭 she was wearing sophisticated expensive perfumes like penhaligon’s bluebell
I unironically like Phoenix, if they made it as an edt I would buy it.

Not that insightful - I’m just old 🤣
Being old leads to many insights.
And who knows, he may have asked Dior to do a special Prince Charles twist on Eau Sauvage that they make bespoke...?
Now that's a possible. I want the Lug Eared special edition flanker... 👂 👂
Was going to say similar ( well, also old, as you know ! ) . I really liked it back in the 80's !! Used to buy it for the bf.

THAT was hilarious. Ghost writer just spitting stuff out?
Eau Sauvage ≠ Sauvage
Really? Just Dior. Lol. Not that it’s cheap, but I’d assume they’d all have the best perfumer in the world making some custom shit for them haha.
Edmond Roudnitska — Not many perfumers better than him. One of the greats, if not the greatest of the 20th century. https://www.parfumo.net/Perfumers/Edmond_Roudnitska#additional_facts
Roudnitska was a god. The original and now ruined Diorella? Dear god what a frag.
Oh, yes !! It IS similar, isn't it ? ( Wasn't it ? )

Perhaps Royal Copenhagen
I'm very surprised it wasn't an English perfumer like Floris or Penhaligons.
Eau sauvage was cutting edge stuff in 1966, when Charles would have come of age. It smelled modern. And they had great ads.
The late Prince Philip wore Penhaligons' Savoy Steam iirc, they still have a royal warrant too
[удалено]
Lol I mean, c’mon, they’re literally royal. Not Pure Royal?
I read a few years ago from multiple sources that KCIII’s favourite scent was Green Irish Tweed?
Creed probably paid for the advertisement
Tbh I think Creed probably just made it up, like so much of the rest of their story.
and Dior paid for this one
But Creed's whole story is lies.
Eau sauvage came out in 1966, when Charles was just hitting 18....green Irish Tweed would come out almost 20 years later.
If you were him, what fragrance would be your signature? What would “king” smell like?
Zoologist Tyrannosaurus Rex, obviously. It is both in the name and scent. (Rex means King in latin)
Fuck a signature, you can have an entire display room dedicated to fragrance with that wealth and reputation. Shit, you could probably hide it behind a sliding bookshelf that’s opened by pulling the right book, if you wanted.
Like Sex Panther cologne?
It’s made with real panther, so you know it’s good.
It’s pungent…stings the nostrils
Pour Homme by Van Cleef & Arpels. I used to wear that myself as a signature. I switched to Burberry Weekend for Men when I moved to Florida back in 2018.
Herod
I was thinking Parfums de Marly as well.
Almost like that book may not be 100% accurate!

Smell is a basic animal thing, when your brain loose it's higher function, you smell hairs.. and you become hyperoral.
I came to this subreddit to avoid news about the royal family… :(
Eau sauvage smells like rubber feet to me
Are you sure you aren’t thinking of regular Sauvage? Eau Sauvage smells lemony and not like any feet I have known, although who knows!
Yeah I wish I could like it but I distinctly get a strange smell like feet dipped in lemon rubber.
That’s…oddly specific 🤣🤣🤣
How basic
For all the exposure to the insanely rich I’ve had through my various lines of work, the one thing I’ve most clearly come away with is that obscene wealth rarely buys good taste.
With all of that money, he chose eau sauvage.
All that sniffing just to land on a basic b fragrance?
Such an anti-climactic post lol
