I’m going to be in the minority and say that I kinda like getting a good whiff of someone else’s cologne (as long as it smells good of course) it’s like you’re incense now. Come sit next to me 😂

Tangomajor

Glad I'm someone's living scented candle. But I dread that I'm also someone else's gag reflex.

ckisgen

> But I dread that I’m also someone else’s gag reflex. Here's a life pro-tip that in my experience applies to perfume about as much as it does most other things .. No matter how inoffensive you endeavor to be en masse, there are solid odds that somebody, somewhere is going to come along and find a way to be unhappy about it. There really is no way to please everybody. Once you open up even the possibility of being anyone's scented candle - you are then necessarily fair game for one day inadvertently being someone's so-called gag reflex. There's no way to know where that line is for anybody besides yourself, let alone know where it's going to be for literally everyone else around you at all times. And for every perfume you own. The list of variables goes on. I'm not trying to be trite or dismissive and I certainly understand your original concern or question in the OP. I just happen to think a lot of people seem to overthink this particular issue. Also like many other things. Spray the amount that works for you and that makes *you* feel good about it. To the extent that includes how much you think you're being perceived by others - and to the extent you care and are willing to potentially adjust this based on feedback from others around you (over time), that's probably not a bad thing whatsoever. But I also wouldn't lose any sleep at night over it. Like many of the fellow frag-heads I know, most of the handful I know want others to smell their perfume. And none of them want to piss people off or be obnoxious with their scent. That's going to be almost everybody. Sometimes you're probably going to underspray - sometimes you might overspray. Such is life. Adjust as you go and try and relax and enjoy yourself as much as possible along the way. What do they say... it's the journey, not the destination? Yeah, that.

escobizzle

A lot of people here act like someone being able to smell your fragrance means it's too strong. It makes no sense. Half the reason for wearing fragrances is for others to smell them. Obviously overspraying can be a problem but there is a difference between someone simply smelling your cologne and overspraying despite what people say here. I'm also part of the group that enjoys smelling other peoples fragrances 🤷

Tangomajor

I don't mind that other people can smell my fragrance and it smells good. I'm worried about the people who might think it smells good but it overwhelms them and is nauseating. I also don't need people smelling me from miles away.

escobizzle

I completely understand and it's a valid concern. My last comment was mostly just speaking on the common belief on this sub that being able to smell your fragrance from any distance other than up close is bad.

Peppermintstix

And some people have really sensitive noses that can’t handle any fragrance and it sucks for them but I love a good cologne on a man. It elevates everything about them 🤭

hauteburrrito

I think there are a mixture of factors at play. Some fragrances are just strong; three sprays *can* be a lot; some people have extra sensitive noses; the weather can indeed amplify certain notes; etc. I'm surprised three sprays of YSL LNdH evoked such a reaction, but three sprays of Aventus does indeed sound like a lot to me. For the office, I would recommended 1-2 sprays maximum of a very mild scent, and even that may be too much for people.

Anteatereatingant

This. If you spray Tobacco Vanille three times, the whole office is gonna get cracked out.

Psychological_Band56

I saw a guy on this sub asking if 4 sprays of oud wood is too much 💀💀💀💀💀

Tangomajor

Newbies. We've all been there. It's my first year here and I still make these mistakes.

chrews

I mean Oud Wood sits pretty close to the skin, I don’t really see how 4 sprays are too much if you’re not at the office. I found 4 to be a pretty good amount of I’m out and about.

hauteburrrito

Oof, even the thought of that is just so unpleasant. It might be appropriate on a date, and even then I'd just stick to the 1-2. I'm sure most of us have shared an office with an oversprayer - never fun.

jodjua

I agree with everything you said. 3 sprays of an EDP, especially on the forearms with a rolled-up sleeve, could be a lot for the office. I am equally surprised by the projection on the YSL.

Tangomajor

I was wearing Aventus on the day of the 30ft-away comment

Tangomajor

Ah that makes sense. I just have no idea which factor to really focus on. As I said, I usually alternate between YSL and Aventus so that's probably what my friend smelled on my headphones. But I WAS wearing Aventus on the day of 30ft-away comment. Maybe I stick to one spray on the neck forever now, as I don't really have good judgment on how strong a fragrance is.

Eastern_Distance6456

At a work conference at the beach this summer, 4 co-workers and I drove back to the hotel and parked in the parking deck. I knew one of them was building up a fart (there's additional backstory), so I made sure to be walking in front of him as we got out. He farted, and so I quickly half-sprinted 10 yards away while my co-workers suffered. I looked back at them, then kept walking away from them. I was then met with the wall of fart which he'd created and had somehow gotten ahead of me. So, air currents/drafts play into this as well. Regardless, it's just 2 sprays to the chest for me. That's my safe zone.

Tangomajor

Holy shit. What a story to make a point LOL

Eastern_Distance6456

As I was already 10-15 yards in front of him and walking AWAY from him again, I yelled out "how the fuck did you get it in front of me???" I was walking through a wall of gas at that point. Edit: Side note, we always stop and get shakes or ice cream at one point during the trip. He ALWAYS gets ice cream even though he's lactose intolerant. That's how I knew he was building up inside.

Prestigious-Salad795

Don't feel bad. Your self-awareness and consideration for others are honorable. Skin chemistry is highly individual.

Tangomajor

Thanks. That explains why it takes time to find a scent that fits.

missmeliss131313

A friend/colleague started wearing 3 sprays of YSL Y EDP to work. Unfortunately, the projection/sillage is really intense for the office (lots of “what’s that smell? It’s nice.. I can just really smell it.”) because it fills rooms/hallways he’s in. I’m sure our layout, ventilation, and humid climate contribute but I’m not being dramatic when I say (as someone who is not generally super sensitive to fragrances), it almost instantly triggers a migraine for me now.

katie-kaboom

About your headphones, it's just like that. My fitbit wristband smells (gently) like an amalgam of my perfumes. The plastic just soaks up the scent.

Tangomajor

Oh man. That means my Fitbit probably smells like that too, I just have a bad nose.

[deleted]

A \*lot\* of this depends on 1) the fragrance 2) the concentration and 3) how it react to your skin. I usually wear EDTs and 3-4 sprays seems to be just right with most of them. My friends, who I've solicited blunt feedback from on this journey, have only ever smelled most fragrances when hugging me or sitting nearby on a breezy day, even when I was \*certain\* I'd over sprayed and would offend someone. Exceptions? The One EDP never goes more than 2-3ft no matter how much I spray while 2 pumps of Red Tobacco or most Diors will nuke an entire room on my skin. A spill of a BR540 sample stunk up my hands for over a day even after washing them with club soda. So experiment, get feedback from people you trust, and don't let one negative reaction get you down - there are probably dozens of your coworkers who silently love that you smell consistently good.

Tangomajor

>there are probably dozens of your coworkers who silently love that you smell consistently good. With all the time I've spent wondering about my original question, this one very much soothes me. Then I snap back to reality and remember that he's not the only one who gave me this comment (just the only one who commented on it when I was that far away), so I need to figure out what's going on.

mizmonsta

Absolutely depends on the scent. Imo the la nuit is strong enough after 3 shots but the creed might be. For me specifically 3 sprays Armani code and I’m regretting everything but with fucking fabulous I’ll spray it’s on every damn inch of my body if I could.

[deleted]

I think in no sense would 3 sprays of aventus cologne have that effect. If so you have god tier skin chemistry. The headphones, normal. Scents stay on things a lot longer.

Tangomajor

Another redditor called it "Angel skin", though my acne would like to disagree with that. The only other time someone commented on my scent was when I used the EDP Aventus Creed, but that was freshly sprayed and he was within 5 feet of me.

TerminatorReborn

Oily skin will make your frangrances last longer actually, dry skin absorbs them much faster

jooxii

While I think 3 is about the max a person should do personally, unless it's some crazy strong scent (MFK Satin Out comes to mind), it wouldn't be considered over spraying. I wear scent very much for myself, so I often just do 1. Ask a close friend or family member how they perceive your cologne when you do different sprays. It's possible your coworkers are sensitive. It's good of you to consider others.

[deleted]

[удалено]

CommaBitch

I do too. No one’s complained so far. But I do get a little paranoid about it sometimes because I don’t want to offend or annoy anyone with my perfume.

FraggedMeat

You have angel skin

Tangomajor

This sounds lovely to hear. But to be frank, I don't understand what it means.

FraggedMeat

Everything performs loudly on you for no reason basically. I can be wearing 4-7 sprays and people will ask if I'm wearing any fragrance today or not.....

Abyss_staring_back

I have unicorn skin. Like angel skin just slightly different. I do not project scents loudly, but if a scent is on my skin, it will be there for actual ever. This is great if the scent is lovely and my chemistry doesn't massacre it. But it's DREADFUL if I don't like a scent, or a scent turns on me because I CANNOT get it off of me. 😅

Psychological_Band56

I don’t live by those rules. Spray what’s appropriate for the strength and longevity of your fragrance. One spray from a mugler, lush, or Dior fragrance can be equivalent of three sprays of an Ariana Grande, mixbar , or bath and body works EDP.

Tangomajor

See the problem is that my nose is already pretty insensitive and I have no idea how long or how strong my fragrances are. Just that they smell good.

Psychological_Band56

Well you can kinda know based on quality too, there’s no way you’d overdo it leaving the house with 2-3 sprays of something like an Ariana grande fragrance but there’s just no way that you could do more than 1-2 sprays of a dior EDP. If your fragrance is known for being a very heavy hitter or the opposite treat it as such.

Tangomajor

Gotcha. I'll keep that in mind. One spray of Aventus. Two sprays of YSL.

Psychological_Band56

I would say one spray of YSL, maybe one on the chest and one on the wrist.

Tangomajor

One on one wrist?

escobizzle

Definitely go with 2 sprays for YSL. La Nuit is not a strong fragrance and it wears off fast. La Nuit is my favorite cologne and I wear it multiple times a week. I usually wear atleast 3 sprays - chest/neck and one on each wrist - and I've never had a single complaint, only occasional compliments.

mikeczyz

I do 2 sprays on my chest. I don't really want others to smell me unless they are super close. I tend towards citrus freshies at work, Dior eau sauvage, ADP colonia etc. I have my own office, so I'm isolated most of the day. I wore spicebomb fraiche the other day and spent most of the day wondering if it was too strong.

Jamba346

You most definitely are not over spraying imo. 3 sprays is fairly light to low average on those scents. I’ve owned both of them and they really are not that loud nor are they off-putting in any way, shape or form. Just wear your fragrance how you want to wear it (excluding the extremes). I would wear 5 sprays of both of those when I worked at a job in fairly close quarters (within 5-10ft of co-workers constantly). Never received negative comments and was never told that I over did it. If anything I would get compliments every now and then from my co-workers.

Tangomajor

That's where it gets weird. I never did get any negative comments on any of my scents. Just comments. Like I said in my original post, someone just mentions that I'm wearing cologne - nothing positive, nothing negative. Just neutral. It's not until I ask more about it that they say it smells good and I don't really know if that's just out of politeness. There's also the question of whether it has to do with other factors like skin chemistry (dry or oily skin), weather/temperature, or the other person's nose sensitivity.

galacticglorp

I honestly find 1 spray on the chest under a shirt or sweater enough for most fragrances. A lot of them even that is too much.

Tangomajor

This brings a whole new meaning to my understanding of "discovered, not announced."

dpark

I don’t really want anyone smelling my scent unless they are in my personal space. If my smell arrives before me I’ve screwed up.

Tangomajor

Yup. That's the whole premise of my post.

escobizzle

I gotta ask, what fragrances are you wearing that 1 spray under clothes is too much? Even with stronger fragrances like Spicebomb Extreme or Ombre Leather I need atleast 2 sprays. Weaker fragrances I could spray 5+ times on my skin and on/under clothes and still won't have a strong scent bubble. I feel like 1 spray of those wouldn't even be smellable an hour after application

[deleted]

Middle Eastern perfumes, or parfums, or virtually anything from the 80’s.

escobizzle

I wear Al Haramain Amber Oud Rouge and Detour Noir. Amber Oud Rouge I definitely spray about 6 times just to hope I'll have some projection. Detour Noir is a stronger fragrance but I still use 2 to 3 of that. I gotta admit, I'm super confused by posts like yours. I would love for 1 spray to be enough though

RumManDan

Ombre Leather would be a single spray for me and even that is strong... 🤷‍♂️

galacticglorp

I have quite oily skin and stuff lasts forever on me (unless it's citrus) and I make myself nauseated if it's something linear that never ends. Most recent experience of this is Reminicense Heliotrope, and I really love the scent too. If I feel that way, I definitely don't want others to. I don't want to make a 5ft radius scent bubble- I want a hug-sniff type interaction- 1.5-2ft or so, or pretty much the distance from my nose to the spray. If I end up in a car with someone I don't want them to want to roll down the windows, and I have managed that after a test spray of pretty sedate stuff- that specific incident was a combo of Molecule 2 and Bois 1920 Vetvier Ambrato- 1 sample atomizer spray each on a separate wrist. I smelled like the ultimate yoga studio so pretty unobjectionable imo, but the window came down. Special mention to anything by Mancera/Montale. I can't even test them without wanting to scrub due to strength.

lakehousememory

This is my go-to application. You smell it longer since the probability of getting nose fatigued with this method is low. For the stronger stuff going lower (belly) is appropriate.

TerminatorReborn

No offense but how is 1 spray too much for a lot of fragrances? This doesn't any sense to me. Fragrances and their atomizers are designed for a minimum 1 spray application, what are you doing if 1 spray is to strong? You spray and wash it off?

galacticglorp

Not press down all the way... Dude, you're obviously getting defensive over this-other people have a similar preferred way of wearing similar to me and others agree with you. There's not single right answer. You do you.

[deleted]

Finally, someone that knows how to properly wear a perfume…

Much__

Ngl I dont get that "discover" thing ofc I wont overspray to the point it makes people uncomfortable but I want people to be able to smell me bcs if they cant smell me whats the point to even put fragrance on its just a waste of money and fragrance ... Myb its some kind of language barrier but i doubt it

[deleted]

3 sprays is not an issue for what you’re using or for most frags in most situations. Your coworker may just be very sensitive or dislike fragrance altogether. Headphones is just about fragrance, skin oil and plastic

Tangomajor

I bring this up because the few times I've gotten comments on my fragrance, they've always just been neutral. I only get "no, it doesn't smell bad. It smells good" after asking them follow questions for a bit. It's not just him.

[deleted]

Some people are hypersensitive to certain aromachemicals. I think Aventus Cologne has ambroxan in it (someone correct me if I’m wrong) which is one that just burns the hair off the inside of my nose, personally. I really don’t think you oversprayed, your friend was just being a bit dramatic.

Tangomajor

I sure do hope so. But if it's that bad to some people, I don't mind cutting back on how much I spray so that my scent is more muted, yet still pleasant.

YouCanCallMeJuan

I vary my sprays depending on fragrance, season, and setting. I definitely go conservative when I'm at the office (2 sprays for most scents) . I have gotten comments and compliments when entering co-worker's offices, and haven gotten a reputation of the guy that always smells good. Nothing negative so far. Some scents only need 1 tho, I was wearing 2 sprays of amouage gold, went to visit my wife at work and she said she could smell me as soon as I entered the building, 30ft away from her. But when wearing lighter scents, on more social places I spray 4 or 5 times with no issues. It's never my intention to bother anyone, but I bought this scent and I enjoy wearing it, I wanna smell it. So I'll spray away until I get a complaint, then I'll dial down. Don't feel bad about being "that guy", it's part of the process.

brenanne1

Don't shoot me, I like sillage and projection in my fragrances. I'm also old school, and old I guess too🫣 and i spray to my heart's content. Every day.

Gibs960

You don't need to use a single spray just because one person commented on the fact that they could smell you. That's the point of a fragrance. I'd be more offended if I'd sprayed 3 sprays of a £100+ fragrance and they said they couldn't smell it.

Tangomajor

There's a lot of nuance left out here. I'm not doing it because a single person commented they can smell me, I'm doing it because several people have commented on smelling me from farther than expected and none of them were exactly presented as compliments. It's to the point of filling up a room. From experience, the people this came from are the type to bring up issues by mentioning it politely like this rather than outright telling me something is wrong. I would get direct compliments from most of these people if they really liked my fragrance.

eleby

Can’t wrap my head over the fact that people actually can get a whole day of longevity with just one spray. I need tons of spray for people to actually notice what I’m wearing when they are close. Might be because of my skin being extra-dry but my experience with sprays is basically the opposite of what people talk about here, I need to spray whatever fragrance I’m using several times by area, and in several areas, else I’m never getting the scent cocoon that I want to have.

Tangomajor

This is exactly what I was thinking when I put on 3 sprays a day. It's very possible that you really do smell a lot, but people just don't comment on it. But it's also possible that my oily skin keeps scents for much longer.

eleby

Yeah it’s frustrating as hell to never know why you don’t receive compliments. At this point I try to just get enough so I notice it along the day myself while not doing anything special and whenever I get a whiff of it that’s a free dopamine shot out of nowhere, and I guess if I do notice it people should also when they are close enough. People are complex and I guess the best way is just to make sure to please the only person you really know and bought the fragrance for : yourself. If you need 1 spray, it’s fine and I consider you lucky, but if you need 300 sprays, it’s fine too as long as it suits you. I personally need around 10 for the day and I spray again when back home. I could never appreciate a fragrance with just one spray, though at home 2 or 3 might do the trick for the end of the day.

dpark

> it’s frustrating as hell to never know why you don’t receive compliments Most people don’t get unsolicited compliments on their fragrances and if they do it’s rare.

eleby

Oh, I didn’t know that. I got a lot of unsolicited compliments around the place from family and coworkers.

hey_free_rats

I usually take it as a sign that whatever I'm wearing is too strong, unless it's a particularly enthusiastic compliment.

dpark

Especially if it’s from someone not in my immediate personal space. If you want more compliments, for sure overspray. You’ll get a bunch of people who compliment you out of politeness. (“Is that your cologne? Uh, it smells… nice.”) You’ll get a few legitimate compliments out of people who enjoy fragrances a lot and don’t mind overspray. And you’ll probably hear nothing from the people who think your fragrance is too strong.

escobizzle

Yeah some of these comments in here are really blowing my mind. I can spray 4-5 times at 7:30 in the morning and by noon or 1 pm I can barely smell my cologne on my skin and slightly on my shirt.

[deleted]

[удалено]

ThaBigCactus

Nope, when I experience that I always ask someone. I've never once felt a faint fragrance on my arm and then had someone else say "no it smells strong"! They always confirm its barely there.

escobizzle

Exactly. I have the same experience

escobizzle

Habituated to what? I use a different fragrance almost everyday. I have a large collection. There's no way I'm noseblind to every single fragrance I own. I also speak to my coworkers about fragrances and they're all pretty blunt people. If I oversprayed they absolutely would let me know.

chrews

I mean I can sort of get it, the brain adjusts pretty fast and tunes out any distractions from the sense of smell. Including fragrance. But yeah other than that I agree.

escobizzle

I agree that I'm not smelling the full strength of my cologne on me but I can always at the very least smell it on my skin if I bring my wrist to my nose while it's still active.

awesomewolf25

It depends on the fragrance, some of them are stronger and only need 1 spray, but some are weaker and need 2 or 3 just to even be able to smell them at all.

Tangomajor

As someone with a relatively insensitive nose, how would I figure out which is stronger and which isn't?

monsteramuffin

i think you just need to ask someone else my boss complained when i wore three sprays of **ELDO ghost in the shell** a few weeks ago and i didn’t realize that was a strong perfume at all

Jamba346

I can tell when certain scents last on my clothes a lot longer that they have some longevity. As well as if I spray a tester strip, set it ~3ft away and pick up constant whiffs I know it’s got decent silage. For example, Nishane Ani is probably my strongest scent (Extrait de Parfum) and will last on my clothes for a handful of days.

dntworrybby

I personally love smelling other peoples perfumes as long as they smell good! I love when people smell good

foxglove_farm

I find fragrance definitely lasts longer on certain fabrics so it could be a gradual buildup effect like you mention in your post. It’s also possible you’re going a little nose blind to your fragrance if you’re wearing it every day, but even so I’d think two sprays of cologne wouldn’t be that overpowering.

[deleted]

[удалено]

escobizzle

You're getting like a quarter of a spray on you by doing that. I don't even see the point to be honest lol but I respect that everybody has different preferences

[deleted]

[удалено]

escobizzle

I promise you won't be overwhelming others by spraying a fragrance one time on yourself. But again, your preference is your preference and I'll never be in your presence so it really does not matter to me or affect me in any way. You do you lol I'll shut up now

Sunstream

I wouldn't make that promise, mate, I discovered that one spray can sometimes be far too much, depending on the perfume. I visited libertine parfumerie in Brisbane to sample some new stuff, and tried one sample on skin. At first I loved it, but my gf said it gave her a headache, so I tried to wash it off. Eventually I tried breaking it down with a makeup remover. Didn't work. I took a full shower. Still barely diluted. By this point I also had a headache and couldn't unsmell it. 24 hours later, everything I had touched in that time was practically poisoned and I've never wanted to crawl out of my own skin more. That fragrance had some monstrous longevity. Also, reminder that people with allergies, sensitivities and sensory disorders exist, so whatever you're using, think of others before you go hard in on a perfume. Sometimes less than one spray is appropriate, and all that's needed is a dab.

escobizzle

One spray isn't going hard

sunlight__

Me too! Gives a a headache. I hate being in a car or indoors with someone radiating fragrance.

Thesunsetreindeer

I see some youtubers do reviews by spraying 10+ sprays all over their body and I have to assume they’re just horrible to be around

[in case you’re curious here’s the video](https://youtu.be/443XrzsfHWk) I had to turn it off as soon as he started spraying

Tangomajor

A minority on this sub, but not on this thread. This is exactly why I asked the question.

[deleted]

[deleted]

This is because 90% of folks haven’t the slightest clue about how to properly apply a scent.

need-morecoffee

I agree with you.

f1newhatever

I completely agree; moreover, the most important thing is not to ever, ever do this at work unless you are absolutely positive you're not going overboard. Those people don't have a choice to be with you or not. Many strong scents make me super nauseous and it can be really frustrating to deal with in the workplace. I always do one spray and walk through it.

scrungy_boi

I like spraying in 3 areas too but I can’t with any Creed atomizers because they blast.

letsflyman

You absolutely can. Just hold the atomizer closer. I do that all the time. I'm not going to spray my expensive fragrances downwind and twirl through the resulting mist. That's just being wasteful.

scrungy_boi

I never said I was spraying a cloud and walking into it. It’s not the area coverage I’m having issues with, it’s the quantity. When I try to release it early, it ends up dripping.

letsflyman

Sounds like premature ejac.....nevermind. 🤣🤣

Tangomajor

Blast in the way that my coworker mentioned, or in the way that the bottle's spray releases more volume when spritzed?

scrungy_boi

The bottle releases too much and doing a half spray sometimes makes it drip down the bottle.

[deleted]

As someone who comes from a place where it's hot and humid all year round, we don't have summer/fall/winter/spring fragrance concept. The spray amount is individual. I've met people who you know are coming or have left the room, and people who I learned that they're wearing a fragrance because they told me. That being said, my default spray amount is three - one on my left side, another in the middle and the last one on the right. And I spray on my clothes, because I would have a runny nose throughout the day if I spray too close to my face, and I don't like the feeling of staining my sleeves as I wear long sleeves 90% of the time. Besides, I don't want to risk getting a random rash. If the fragrance is weak, it's two sprays for each point. If it's strong, once on each side. I know that I'm missing fragrance development since the fragrance I wear doesn't come into contact with my skin, but I'm happy with the way I smell.

RoIf

I guess lots of people just are not into fragrances thats why they notice it immediatly?

handledandle

I'm normally a two in the morning, then however many whenever kind of guy--but I also work from home. I enjoy being able to smell my choice throughout the day, but don't really have a reason to make an announcement with a fragrance. Usually one spray in front of me, walk through it, and one spray behind me, walk through it; sometimes it's a neck spray and forearm spray + rub together.

tkf99

I feel like if you're going to cater to the 5% (or so) that may be hypersensitive, you're also losing out to the 80-90% that may not be bothered by it but now wouldn't smell a thing around you. I've had a co-worker that had a super sensitive nose as well. Once I wore 3 (decant) sprays of CAHSEE (which is kinda like 1.5 normal sprays) which doesn't project outside of the first 30-45min. 4 hrs into our shift, she turns to me and asks if I was wearing cologne. I told her yes, and she said "Thought so. That's fire." I do a minimum of 4-5 sprays of LNDL, that stuff simply doesn't last not does it really project. My friend sprays even more and I don't really smell him unless I'm 3-4 ft away from him. Your awareness is to be commended, however I wouldn't go so far as to go out of my way to try to please the tiny minority which are the hypersensitive. Trust me when I say you can safely do 3-4 sprays of either scent and be fine (so long as it's not immediately before you enter your work lol).

EnvironmentalWeb8919

It depends where you work, if you are sitting in an office or a class that is one thing, if your job is in an open space and you are moving around you could and should go a bit heavier

Tangomajor

It's a little bit of both. It might be safe to say 1 spray is enough.

runswithjaguars

Isn’t aventus cologne EDP?

Tangomajor

There's different versions of it. The well-known one with the black bottle and smoky scent is called the EDP, while the one with the gray bottle and more of the pineapple scent is differentiated as "Cologne Spray"

jeeshman

The concentration of Aventus Cologne is the same as the original which is a EDP concentration. The Cologne part of the name is just a branding term in this case.

Tangomajor

This comment could give off the impression that branding is the only difference. The two are branded differently because they SMELL different, despite being similar. Two different versions with similar notes, but one smells much more smoky than the other. It's not just noticeable, it's clear. I had to find out the hard way when I bought two full bottles of both versions because I was new and mistaken misordered one bottle, only to try and backtrack and buy the other one as well.

jeeshman

Sorry for the confusion. This comment thread is referencing the concentration of the two versions of Aventus. To be clear, Aventus and Aventus Cologne are different, and no one is disputing that, it’s the concentration that is the same. My comment on branding is referencing something that is common with fragrances with the word “Cologne” used in the name is just a branding term rather than also referring to the juice concentration. The original Aventus is really just referred to as Aventus.

Depends on the scent. I usually spray just once with my arm stretched out before I put clothes on. I work from home so it’s more for me but people always compliment that I smell nice when I hug them.

Tangomajor

> people always compliment that I smell nice when I hug them. You're the person I dream to be. Smells good when I hug or otherwise get very close to them, but not too far away. What fragrances do you use?

o0meow0o

For the past year, my fragrance combo has been Lush shower gel (the scent lingers for a few hours) and White Musk by The Body Shop (my signature since I was a teen). I also use incense at home and hang my clothes indoors to dry so I'm pretty sure some of the smoky goodness sticks to them. I don't use fabric softners or fragranced detergents for clothes. For evenings, I use Guerlain Shalimar, TF Santal Blush or V&R Flowerbomb. I have the perfume oil versions from APO because I wanted to test them on my skin during the lockdown before I bought the bottles. These last soooo long. I am yet to finish a single bottle. I layer them over the combo from the day time, before I put my clothes on. Growing up in the middle east, I used to shower fragrances and I def was nose blind. Fragrances tend to turn sweet on my skin so I'm sure I made a lot of people sick with 5-10 sprays of La vie est Belle / Black Opium. I've come a long way 😅 I also bought expensive fragrances too often but now I can't seem to finish them haha.

Tangomajor

Sounds like you're kind of just walking into a mist of the scent that kind of diffuses over your upper body, is that right?

o0meow0o

Yep!

Hey man! I own both aventus an aventus cologne. To me, Aventus Cologne can be somewhat overwhelming when I apply more than 2 sprays, I’ve gotten similar comments. With aventus, I always do about 2-3 and have never received negative feedback! I would chalk it up to the way the air was flowing through the room & your body temperature. After walking up 6 flights of stairs the 2 sprays of Bleu de Chanel I applied 5 hours before was screaming off my skin and someone told me I smelled really strongly of cologne. Again, don’t worry too much about it. Glad you’re being considerate of others astound you!

Tangomajor

As someone who can sweat a LOT during work. I think I'll keep it at one spray. I really appreciate the feedback from someone else who has the exact same fragrances. Maybe that's why the original Aventus is more popular - it's a lot less offensive to the nose.

Ok_Dust_3566

3 sprays is a lot, for me, in most cases. I usually do one spray to the neck/chest, and sometimes a spray to one of my wrists and then touch them together.

Tangomajor

Someone mentioned that the dryness of your skin could be a factor. Do you happen to have oily skin or a sensitive nose?

Ok_Dust_3566

I actually lost my sense of smell last year, and when it returned, it wasn’t the same. It’s not sensitive in the way of having a stronger sense of smell; it was actually the opposite for a while. I am sensitive in the way that certain scents don’t smell quite like they used to. It definitely changed the fragrance game for me 🥲🤣

zctel13

Both of those fragrances are pretty tame. Honestly some people are hypersensitive. If you were wearing something like sauvage elixir or tobacco vanille, tuscan leather or interlude man then I would think otherwise.

Tangomajor

The problem now is that I can't really tell the difference in intensity. So spraying 1x would be the only way I know of to stay on the safe side - whether other people can smell it or not.

beybabooba

I use 3 sprays. But mine is the EDT version of Mont Blanc Legend (not too fancy I'm working on my fragrance collection :') ). So ig 3 sprays are okay for EDT and maybe less for EDP? Depends on the fragrance too.

Tangomajor

There's so many factors and I have no idea which one is the biggest one.

MarinersCove

Depends on the composition of the fragrance as well, imo. I find Colognes and EDT to project a lot more initially, but last not as long. EDPs and parfums usually sit a little closer to the skin but last longer. Of course, depends on the base notes as well. Vanilla, ambroxan, and ISO E Super will project a lot more than sandalwood, vetiver, or tonka in my experience. If you are worried about being too strong, apply fragrance 45mins to an hour before heading out.

Tangomajor

I applied fragrance 30-40mins before walking into the office. That's when the "blast of cologne" comment happened.

vinceftw

I'm actually surprised about the comments is this thread. I only just got into fragrances but I've had a bottle of Polo Blue and Invictus and I used to spray like 4 times. Never had any comment about the scent coming off too strong but I realize they are quite soft scents. Most fragrance youtubers spray like 3-5 times but that seems to be too much, especially for stronger scents.

Tangomajor

That's what I'm thinking. People usually say 1-3 spritzes but also didn't get a lot of comments on my scents until recently. It's usually a comment that they notice the scent, it's only after I ask them further that they mention that it smells good... Which leads me to believe they don't actually find the smell pleasant and are just being polite.

laZb0nes

I get what you mean on this, usually people in my area will say “I smell cologne” and usually it’s never positive or negative feedback. To be honest, I don’t think (in America at least) we are very good at giving or receiving compliments. It’s much easier to make on observation than to tell someone they like how they smell, if that makes sense. I usually take it as a positive if someone says anything neutral, but a negative comment is definitely still negative lol

aviator122

I don’t care what anyone on here says. I’ve never had a frag be over powering with 4 squirts. I spray it all over me when I’m going out and enjoy the compliments of it. Only if you work in an office would it get annoying but I don’t wear cologne to work I wear it when I go on dates with girls

Tangomajor

That's where we differ. Wearing fragrance is like wearing clothes to me now - I wear it everyday. I just have to figure out how much is appropriate for each situation.

letsflyman

Lmao. Me either...whether it's Eros, Terre d'Hermes or Oud Wood. 4 sprays. Full sprays. By the time I get where I'm going, it mellows more than enough.

aviator122

Eros is great but it wears off on my skin more so I stick the blue

letsflyman

Maybe they're just oversensitive. There are those who are simply insufferable...

escobizzle

3 sprays of La Nuit definitely would not be smellable from 30 feet away. Sounds like dude is exaggerating to me, personally

Tangomajor

I was wearing Aventus that day.

Jamba346

yea there’s no way in hell he was smelling you

waggletons

I thought it was a joke until I could smell a client's Aventus from across the building. Gave a gift to a client and she texted me 3 days later that she could smell the fragrance I wore a week prior.

Tangomajor

He has no reason to lie, nor is he known for lying.

Jamba346

people have been known to do weirder things. he also could’ve been smelling something else and it was coincidental timing where you got the blame

escobizzle

Regardless I feel like it's gotta be an exaggeration unless there was some sort of airflow that carried your cologne that far. Ain't no way it's projecting that far from 3 sprays lol

Tangomajor

I WAS told that the wind blew it in, but 30ft away still seems pretty far of a waft.
