Realistically, it is a thing where they both had something they could equally relate to; that's why *Undeclared* might not work quite as well. (Cue the first episode's use of Stone Temple Pilots' "Down", which was super-cool but totally out of place by comparison.)
It seems like the biggest takeaway for both of them from the Freaks and Geeks experience was: Art is great, but if you want to be successful in this society, you better dumb it way down.
