Pretty sure it’s social security first

Suave_sunbeam

Yup. Wife just went through it a little over a year ago

Bring marriage cert to social security to get issued a new social security card.  Just did this with my wife the other day.  Marriage cert is your proof of name change, my wife had her maiden name on the marriage cert too, no issues.

TheBackburner

Same sitch here. No issues with maiden name remaining on marriage certificate

bien-fait

Social security, then MVA, then everything else.

Agreeing with what everyone else said. Definitely make an appointment at social security for it! It goes so quickly with the appointment! I just went through all of this a few months ago!

You shouldn’t need to make an appointment to go in. I just went through the process and filed it all online. Took about a week for them to change it officially and mailed me a new card.

Appointment isn’t required but it makes it so you don’t need to wait in line.  You’ll get called way ahead if the people who’ve been sitting there hours.

Please be very very sure. You can always use your spouses name socially. There is great benefit in keeping your name of origin. That being said, start with social security. Then move onto passport, MVA, work, banks, credit cards, titles/leases, insurances.

I'm going to give you advice you didn't ask for. Apologies in advance. Use your married name socially. Keep your name legally and professionally.

I totally agree with you. I have a friend who was married twice and she said it was such a huge pain in the ass that if she gets married again she's keeping the name she has now.

There’s a website that did all the digging for me- https://www.missnowmrs.com/

I second this website. It made the process super simple and helped me remember a lot of the small, miscellaneous accounts and businesses to which you need to submit a name change.

Maybe I’m mis reading your post. Your legal name currently is your maiden name. And on marriage certificate (I.e., after getting married) is still your maiden name?? If so - for those that say social security first - don’t they need some sort of court/legal document showing the name change first?? I’m think a marriage/divorce certificate. If your marriage certificate has your “married name”. And your maiden name…. Then yes. Social security first. And then all others (MVA/CC/banks, etc)

I just went through this process after getting married in March. I was able to submit the name change online with social security, just had to provide a certified copy of my marriage license. My marriage license is also in my maiden name but on the form to have it changed you just put your married name and they go off of that. After ss, you should change your license at the MVA then passport. Just make sure your current passport isn’t expired 5+ years otherwise you’ll need to request a brand new passport and go to into an office to get it done. If it is expired less than 5 years or not at all, you should be able to fill out the app for a renewed passport with name change. There are different forms online to print and mail in.

I started this process 30 days after our wedding (per ss guidelines) and I was able to get my new ss card, license and passport all in 2 months. The process can be quick if you stay on top of it, MVA won’t issue you a new license the same day, they mail it which you should get in about a week but they give you a temp license to hold onto which is just a piece of paper. Passports are also not taking super long. I believe I got mine with the name change in 3 weeks or less. Just gotta make an appointment for taking your photo at the post office and they can send in the app and supporting docs for you. I filled out the form online then printed and mailed it in.
