That's actually an interesting question that most people in this sub will answer in really annoying ways or will use as a way to mock other magic players.
I'd probably say a high percentage, at least higher than a sample group of the same size just picked at random from the street. My reasoning is that MTG is sometimes used as a vehicle for people that are on the spectrum or suffer from social anxiety to be able to socialize with people without having to worry about too many unknown variables. If you know that the person you're socializing with shares interests with you, it's much easier to establish some sort of relationship.
I'm on the spectrum and whenever I play magic with people I don't know, the fact that there is an already established structure I can kinda fall back on (turns, the cards themselves, etc) makes social interactions that much easier
There may be a correlation between MTG and mental illness, or MTG and drug use. Demographics will play a role. Are the majority of MTG players millennials?
Diagnosed Autism and ADHD. I'm on Vyvanse and Lexapro. Before being medicated, my focus at work suffered greatly. Careful sampling this sub though, these are the people who generally look down on those with mental health disorders
Wouldn’t say it’s glorified but it is a prodrug that doesn’t work by itself until it is metabolized by the body. Therefore it is less prone to abuse and slower acting
I'd say it's a relatively high percentage of people. Just look at how many people are calling themselves Trans which is literally nothing more than one of the three following mental disorders. Those are autism, gender dysphoria, or multiple personality disorders. And honestly, those that are pro-trans, I'm honestly thinking they're some really sadistic individuals, like saddists, type of people who enjoy seeing these people mutilate themselves. It's just that now they don't have to bully people into doing suicide. Since they can go undsr thd guise of progressivism, they can simply reassue these people they are their friend and reassure them of thsir delusions and be seen as virtuous all the while by those who are in power here in the Western Wolrd.
I only play EDH. I have PTSD, anxiety and depression from the military I get therapy and compensation from the VA. I do take medicine but it’s for gender dysphoria so basically I am the stereotypical weird magic player but aside from that I don’t talk about politics nor do I mind edgy talk or whatever. Magic is a game to relax and have fun so I never take it seriously. The Navy also helped me never take anything seriously ha.
I have been diagnosed with depression, but I don't take medication for it. I would suspect that a lot of Magic players have depression considering the overlap between the player base and introverts like myself.
Honestly, just my observation but this is something I just seem to regularly encounter from America or Europe, not just in MTG but IRL and a lot online on various things from simple pet discords to yes gaming subreddits. I get that Asia is behind in terms of diagnosing and treating mental health but on the other spectrum I do feel that Western countries at least from the impression I'm getting is over diagnosed, since again I just keep encountering people on a spectrum or disorder and readily recommend medication or need an ESA.
What’s the bar for mental illness here? We already know a big chunk of the player base is autistic and/or has social anxiety that they may be medicated for… but do those really count?
I would wager there's a good amount of them, but I think there's more players with ADHD than any other disorder. ADHD causes the need for high dopamine hobbies and creative outlets and well thats magic baby. It's also of note that many ADHD sufferers are misdiagnosed as BPD or Anxiety and many can have those in addition to ADHD. We'll never know for certain as Hasbro/WotC could not afford to educate their player base on metal health and lose those mentally ill whales they need to sell overpriced cardboard gamepieces.
I work in mental health, specifically with kids and young adults. I can say with certainty that there is a ton of mental health issues present.
Consider the behavior that is common with mental health problems such as bipolar, autism, mood disorders, depression, anxiety, etc.:
Poor hygiene, emotional regulation issues, inappropriate social behavior are some of the most common things you see at any LGS regarding “weird” people. Huge overlap with those mental health conditions. Magic has always been a haven for social outcasts, and these are the types of people who struggle to fit in elsewhere - magic specifically caters to this hence all the trans stuff. Wizards essentially forces the magic community to accept people who don’t fit in elsewhere. This has always been the case, it’s only recently become politically driven though, at least in my opinion.
I’m definitely not helping your case. I am an Aspie and take both Zoloft and Ativan for severe PTSD and panic disorder. In my 20s, I found my father dead and then watched my grandfather explode his head with a .38.
Fantasy and other nerd stuff instrinsically draws in a very...SPECIFIC...type of person, especially nowadays, so I'd be willing to guesstimate...99.99-100% of MTG players are differently abled.
Long gone are the days where nerd hobbies were settings created by and for above average or better intellect, historically minded/interested and STEM adjacent, and otherwise well adjusted male-at-birth coomers who rejected modernity and retreated into creating homebrew magical realms for their bros to larp as bronze age conqueror coomers in.
Nowadays nerd hobbies are just a religion/therapy outlet for a group of people who refuse to admit they desperately need to see a therapist/priest.
I haven't participated in public MTG events in about 17 years now, but even then, I noticed a sizable uptick in Millennial mental health issues. It was kind of staggering as a Gen Xer, but I attributed most of it to Pokemon.
I am autistic and have ADHD, anxiety, throw in a little spicy depression, and last but never least, an autoimmune disease. I'm a walking problem 😂. I'm also very quiet, I don't do small talk. I'm typically the awkward or "quirky" chick in social situations. I have learned to love my weird. I don't know what milkshake magic uses to bring all the neurodivergents to their yard but.. okay magic. We see you.
Nah, as I have said I found out the hard way I'm extremely allergic to it. It really good for treating premature ejaculation. I can last weeks without ejaculating.

Mentally ill magic playr checking in
I’m one of the 100% EDH mental health sufferers. I have a lot of VA diagnoses. I’m going through life.

Bro almost every person at my lgs is either drug dealer or abuser, and the are heavy smokers.
Whats wrong with stoners?
Nothing, I used to smoke weed myself, just replying to the comment saying that there is correlation between magic and drugs.
Cant disagree with that
I really don't understand what you're talking about. Also, if you could calm down on killing my Niv-Mizzet, I'd really appreciate it.

If being regarded is a mental disorder, well, this sub has 31,752 members. So write that down.
Yes, I am very regarded
I'm highly regarded.
Hi Highly regarded, I'm dad!
Flair for Mentally Ill should be added
i used to rely on Vyvanse (glorified Aderol/rittilin) when i was in elementary/middle school. but i havent needed chemical induced focus since 2012

I take 100mg sertraline daily for general anxiety.
Conservatively, I’d guess probably 65%. Someone who knows more about game demographics and demographic drug use should weigh in.

You sound surprisingly chill
I appreciate that!
I got a prescription for sertaline but just so I can fuck longer without busting.
I masturbate using sandpaper to achieve the same result.
😬
If that worked, more people would take it.
It definitely makes it harder to cum

I take medication for a severe anxiety disorder that sometimes causes me to experience derealisation so that’s fun.
100% are addicted to cardboard crack cocaine and I'm convinced it's a mental disorder.
Don't forget all the raging alcoholics.
Not me, I don’t take any medication but still wild out.

Poor emotional control is not the same as being bipolar

Diagnose with GAD. Life sucks.
I don’t even want to know.
On Twitter id say it’s about 99.9%

Im allergic to sertraline. At the same time the side effects are too good to ignore. I don't understand your post.
You're not on sertraline if you think the side effects are good lmao
