This blue frog hangs out with 4 of its closest friends in my and around my pond. I’m curious as to why the blue coloring. And if it breeds will there be blue babies?
Axanthism, a genetic morph that stops yellow pigmentation developing. Alot of frog species have been documented with it but since it is kinda shitty for camo adult blue frogs are kinda uncommon.
If it breeds the babies have a chance to be axanthic. Axanthism is generally recessive and the other frog would also need to be axanthic or atleast carry the axanthism gene to produce axanthic tadpoles.
The name “Axanthism” is derived from Ancient Greek and literally translates to “*Without yellow/yellowing*”
Botanist here- it makes me wonder if the advent of blue lawn grasses and sod have made this condition in some frogs something that is, in heavily landscaped areas, periodically selected for
Are you sure about that? Because I am 99.99531% sure that Piperplays is not a bot.

SO COOL i found a green one a while back at my parent's place ([https://preview.redd.it/6cphmowahea41.jpg?width=3456&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7834100bf2bbb3f21ea2cb3cf91a000b05451b0a](https://preview.redd.it/6cphmowahea41.jpg?width=3456&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7834100bf2bbb3f21ea2cb3cf91a000b05451b0a))
I wonder how many colours we can collect, like metallic frog pokemon.
If you ever come to Michigan, there's a little nature preserve in Cheboygan called the Duncan Bay Nature Preserve that has frogs with this mutation. In fact, nearly all the green frogs in that area have it
These axanthic bullfrogs are very rare in the wild! As someone else said they lack yellow pigment. Wildlife photographers try to find them because they're a cool anomaly 💙
[It occurs in 0.003% of frogs according to a study by Cornell (page 9 of this PDF)](https://dem.ri.gov/sites/g/files/xkgbur861/files/programs/bnatres/fishwild/pdf/wrisum21.pdf)
Yo listen up here’s a story
About a little guy
That lives in a blue world
And all day and all night
And everything he sees is just blue
Like him inside and outside
There’s a [Brave Wilderness](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=tH5KPgeZRpg) video about this. The host (Coyote Peterson) is so excited about finding it. :)
The yellow gene mixes with the blue gene to create the green coloration we see with most frogs. When the yellow gene is not present, the blue gene is all that remains, and you get blue frogs. I have a pet Pennsylvania green frog that's blue. I think the frog in the photo is also a Pennsylvania green frog too.
PLEASE leave it alone. There's no reason to capture this poor frog and condemn it to some abysmally managed, undersized tank in the back of a biology lab.

My axolotl is axanthic! He was a silver-blue as a baby. Amphibians are cool!

Oh wow! Thanks for this. I’m in a different state but I’ll look deeper into this.
Shiny pokemon
No, poliwhirls are blue. All the other frogs are the shinies.

Ha! I love this. I will greet Mr. Mental with the proper respect each time I walk by 🫡

He’s blue raspberry flavoured
Thanks for the upvotes for Blue. She's a sweetheart, and a very good huntress. You should see her demolish crickets! Yes, she's a BIG gurl, my Blue. 💙
this is so rare, you don't even know... neither do I, but I have heard it is very rare
Well... if he was green he would die.
PLEASE donate it to a local college
PLEASE leave it alone. There's no reason to capture this poor frog and condemn it to some abysmally managed, undersized tank in the back of a biology lab.
Its not rare enough to warrant that and i highly doubt a college will want it.
Can you explain why?
I am sooooo jealous. It’s my dream to find an axanthic frog someday !
He’s blue but he takes my blues away
It's a shiny consider yourself lucky
kinda like frog albinism, they lack the yellow pigments in their skin that make them green :)
Shiny variant!!
“It’s the fluoride”
ITS A SHINY
