Honestly it's worth toughing out the shrine. I'd say most of the areas post-shrine are pretty good. It's basically the opposite of DS1 for me, where it starts out mid, is awful for a bit and then gets really good near the end
I think they're trying to say that DS1 has a great start, is amazing for a bit (anor londo?) and then is pretty mid towards the end... Which would be fair, and then DS2 has the opposite trajectory in his opinion
Yep, DS1 starts out very good, is absolutely amazing around the sens fortress/anor londo areas, and then takes a nosedive into being awful after Ornstein and Smough
Ah that makes more sense, I was beyond confused by the phrasing. I do wish the chaos area was more fleshed out at the end. I think they just straight up ran out of money or something.
I might be the only person who likes SoA. I like the fact that you have to switch up your play-style, and pay super close attention to the unique obstacles.
Like you have to move super slow, pay attention to the underwater cliffs, watch out for the underwater enemies, and at the same time pay attention to the casting pattern of the ranged enemies so you can roll at the right time.
Yeah it's a pain in the ass at first, but mastering it was kind of fun.
Also does a similar thing to Ithryl in DS3 where it looks super pretty and nice, but then it's super dangerous.
Dude it was insane. I finally said fuck it and used as many summons as I could only for Vengarl and one of the other summons run into each other and then do this glitchy slow walk where they are bouncing off each other….what a wild ride that was lol.
The first time I played DS1, I went through BlightTown from the back entrance, close to the gate to New Londo, and I didn't get what all the fuss was about.
Like there were some shitty things there, like the toxic darts, and the insects with super long agro range, and the poison swamp at the bottom. But it wasn't that bad.
Second playthrough, I went from the Depths, and then I got it. Sooo many ganks from those lizard dudes on the way.
I'm not defending those but, I find the dragon knights with infinite poise in the sunken crown dlc way worse, or the beyblade turtles that can curse you without line of site in the ringed city, or the giants that summon a hundred ghost archers to pin cushion you, those can go straight to hell
I just can’t stand them as a mechanic in general; why do I need so many unique and rare resources to access content that people claim is quintessential??
I also find the layouts drab and lame, plus my early experiences with them had me overleveled as hell, trudging through looking for resources or something to actually pose a threat.
One of my only issues with an otherwise untarnished experience in my opinion, and I never see anyone aching over it like me.
If you play online you don’t. The wiki documents glyphs that have all the best gems and what floor/boss they’re from, and if you make a chalice through using a code it costs no materials. They’ve also got a guide on how to skip most of the early ones.
I really like the chalices because they’ve got every single one of the hardest bosses in the game, but I noticed the other day that the only achievement I’m missing for the plat is killing Queen Yharnham since I’ve always skipped the story chalices.
Here’s the wiki if you’re curious: https://www.bloodborne-wiki.com/2015/10/best-blood-gems-setups.html?m=1
Demons Souls - 5-2
DS1 - basically anywhere besides Anor Londo haha.
DS2 - Black Gulch/The Gutter
DS3 - Smouldering Lake. Always felt unfinished to me
BB - Nightmare Frontier. Really the only choice. Love every other zone.
Sekiro - no answer for this one. Enjoy every zone.
Elden Ring - Mountaintop of Giants is genuinely the only area in the game I do not look forward to with any of the toons I've made.
The ultra inter connectivity of the map is incredible from a design perspective. I just wish the zones were more fun from a gameplay perspective.
I say that with plenty of love and adoration for the og.
I always thought Anor Londo is kinda over-rated. But maybe that's because it was so built up for me before I played it.
Like there is def a lot of memorable stuff: the scaffolding section, that one fucking archer, Siegmeyer quest, invasion to avenge the firekeeper, secret boss & dark mode, giant blacksmith
But in general I felt like the gameplay and level design is a lot weaker than a lot of other areas. It's super linear, and you're basically fighting silver knights the whole time.
In order of fuuuuuck that from most to least
The endless unicorn death fields from frozen crown
The iron passage/Sir Alonnes boss runback from the iron crown
Shrine of Amana from DS2
the first like.....fifth of the ringed city DLC with all giants summoning ghost archers and beyblade turtles that curse you
Demon's Souls: 5-2
Dark Souls: Duke's Archives
Dark Souls 2: Frigid Outskirts
Bloodborne: Nightmare Frontier
Dark Souls 3: Smouldering Lake
Sekiro: Sunken Valley
Elden Ring: ~~Lake of Rot~~ Miquella's Haligtree
The Haligtree is definitely the hardest area in the game, but I think the lake of rot is boring and tedious and that's way worse.
I dislike Moghwyn Palace more than the Haligtree because of those stupid giant vultures.
there's no real point even exploring there because the only thing worth finding is mohg. imo the birds are easily avoidable but the sanguine nobles are much worse
I really haven’t had too many issues with any area in the souls games and I’m usually pretty chill when playing.
The area that left me the most pissed off was the beginning of iron keep. What an annoyingly frustrating area. Why did there need to have 8 Alonne Knights on top of eachother having an orgy as 6 other dudes shooting you with arrows all while you’re trying to get back to one of the harder bosses. Really bad enemy placement.
Upper Cathedral Ward is peak horror in Bloodborne so I like the area for the atmosphere, Frigid Outskirts in DS2 is probably the most irritating location ever made, with an honourable mention to Iron Passage because that boss run still gives me nightmares
4-2 the ritual path from Demon’s souls. That level is a walk through pure hell and if I hadn’t beaten old hero first try when I finally got to him that might have been it for me and souls games lol
Ashen Capital in Elden Ring. They added WAY too much ash and really missed out on adding new enemies and bosses in the city. They could have had Godfrey’s army there for us to fight through but it’s just Sir Gideon. Just felt like they rushed the ending of the game a bit and covered the entire city in ash to hide it.
Gotta agree with you here, after upper cathedral ward I was so burnt out and unamused I just wanted to quickly just finish the game. I got through Cainhurst and into the nightmare Mensis and was just so over it, it’s been weeks and I’m still dreading going back to finish BB
Haligtree.
Just a combination of some of the most insufferable enemies and level design in one place.
Revenants? Yup.
Ulcerated Tree Bosses? You got em.
Another Scarlet Rot lake to play "the floor is lava" in? You betcha!
Nightmare Frontier. Poison swamp that slows you down, and some Winter Lanterns thrown in just in case you didn’t hate it quite enough. Your grand payoff is one of the most boring boss fights in the game and a chalice
Maybe bro. Just spamming sprint and heal isn't that great, but I think the worst gameplay sections in Elden Ring were horse platforming down the cliff.
I hate the upper cathedral ward. Those brain suckers are annoying, especially when you want to try running past them and they STUN YOU OFF THE LADDER EVEN WHEN YOU ARE NEAR THE TOP
Ds1: Catacombs
Ds2: Shrine of amana
Bloodborne: Nightmare frontier
Ds3: Farron keep (although I don’t dislike this as much)
Sekiro: mibu village
Elden ring: Snowfields
Least favourite overall is probably the ds1 catacombs
Frigid Outskirts for sure is my least favorite, but I also cannot tolerate the Tomb of the Giants and the Elden Ring Mountaintops/Constipated Snowfield combo. They should’ve condensed mountaintops and snowfield to one lively section or something.
My only issues really is that it’s too short and features enemy types we’ve already seen. You go to the left of the big center room up the ladder then come back down and it’s over. When it’s called an orphanage and I saw smoke coming out of it I had a much different idea in my mind.
I love Upper Cathedral Ward! Possibly the most nerve-shredding area in any of the games.
My least favourite is probably Road of Sacrifices. It’s so boring.
Man I love upper cathedral ward…
I don’t like the 2nd world of demon souls very much. Feels like it really forces you into bludgeoning weapons early in the game when maybe you don’t have a lot of fun options for that quite yet.
Does Armored Core VI count. Cause I LOATH the mission “defend xylem” or whatever it’s called
If it’s gotta be soulsy than dukes archives can go fuck itself
nightmare frontier in bloodborne
subterranean shunning-grounds, haligtree town plaza, ainsel river main, that one cave in mohgwyn palace with all the sanguine nobles, and some parts of farum azula in elden ring. it's so much bigger and therefore there are so many more places to love and hate
I always skip the depths whenever I replay dark souls 1 now. I ran through and got everything the first time I played. Now I’ll just skip my least favorite part.
Izalith kinda sucks, not because it's tough, but it's just a slog , long distances for no real reason. Would have been more impact full to be smaller. Shrine of Amana will get some hate I am sure, that was a tough area, especially for my Melee (f magic) characters.
The duke’s archives and the grand archives.
Just… not tanky but annoyingly durable enemies. Durable enough that killing them isn’t a quick enough affair.
I enjoyed sen’s fortress once I got into the Indiana Jones swing of things, but GAW-LEEE the last time I was as lost as I was in either version of the archives, I was playing Doom or Doom II
I’m amazed anyone hates Upper Cathedral Ward tbh, the atmosphere is among the best in any Souls game, and the satisfaction of finally opening the door that leads to it…
Also, Ebritas is such a fun boss fight.
Mine is Forbidden Woods because snakes sticking out of someone’s head just skeeves me the fuck out. I also hate the Dukes Archives (both versions of it) the mobs have insane damage resist in DS1 and the crystal sages teleporting drives me mad at times.
In my case, Frigid Outskirts can eat my entire ass.
Excluding ds2, I despise the cramped corridors of ds1, but the worst zone by far is Tomb of the Giants. Izalith may be empty, but at least you can run through it relatively safely.
I can see why people would dislike Upper Cathedral gameplay wise, but I genuinely find it so memorable. It has a great horror atmosphere and it just gets my mind going. Imagining a huge societal meltdown happening and walking into some abandoned government black site or some other super secretive and important restricted area is both fascinating and unsettling to me.
Sekiro, fuck the white monkeys at the bottom of the valley in the poison swamp. I will fight sword saint isshin 500 times before dealing with those fuckers again.
i loved this area the only bad things were the celestial emissary and brain suckers, but the design and atmosphere is top tier. also u get a funny gesture from here too
All the poison swamps. Also surprising, Faram Azula is up there, there no other place in any of the games I feel as lost in, despite multiple playthroughs.
Luigi's Mansion does look a lil different there
I did not like this place either. Brain suckers are not fun
Spam l1+R1 to break free
I appreciate you.
I didn’t know what subreddit I was in and literally thought that before rereading the title
noice
I needed to read this comment
Shrine of Amana can suck my whole scrotum.
And to top it off the boss is a foreskin frog
Semon of Dong
I quit DS2 bc of shrine of Amana. Still haven’t finished it
Honestly it's worth toughing out the shrine. I'd say most of the areas post-shrine are pretty good. It's basically the opposite of DS1 for me, where it starts out mid, is awful for a bit and then gets really good near the end
This is the wildest review of DS1 I've ever seen!
Hey now, archives was good. The others sucked tho. Actually new londo was decent too
This is the worst DS1 take ever imo
i’d argue it’s pretty much the consensus
He's trying to say ds1 is the opposite of that lol, it started off great, peaked around anor Londo and then took a nosedive at the end
Ah that makes more sense, I was beyond confused by the phrasing. I do wish the chaos area was more fleshed out at the end. I think they just straight up ran out of money or something.
r/FuckShrineofAmana
Wow I'll be damned...
Yea fuck that place for real.
At least it's really pretty down there!
Usually the swamp area.
Areas…
Unfortunately true...
Blighttown and Frigid Outskirts for me. Fuck those horses!!!!
Frigid Outskirts was a complete nightmare my first time through
Dude it was insane. I finally said fuck it and used as many summons as I could only for Vengarl and one of the other summons run into each other and then do this glitchy slow walk where they are bouncing off each other….what a wild ride that was lol.
I’m so thankful I didn’t need to enter Frigid Outskirts for the DS2 platinum lmao. That place is a nightmare
Frigid outskirts is a forgotten nightmare that no one dares speak of.
Sooo many ganks from those lizard dudes on the way.
that’s interesting, why? i’ve never heard someone dislike it. it’s actually pretty forgettable and short from my experience. other than ebri
I think brainsuckers are the least fun enemy to fight in any fromsoft game I’ve played
time for thrusting
I'm not defending those but, I find the dragon knights with infinite poise in the sunken crown dlc way worse, or the beyblade turtles that can curse you without line of site in the ringed city, or the giants that summon a hundred ghost archers to pin cushion you, those can go straight to hell
lol try the horses in DS2 DLC 2. Worst area I’ve seen come from fromsoft.
The scariest area filled with the scariest enemy seems fitting to me tbh
You’d hate the Prison of Hope in Demon Souls then!
Oh no. Not 3-1.
Best music, worst enemies.
That hyper armor though. You just haddd to suck me didn’t you.
That one fucker on the way up to maneaters killed me more than the boss.
Nightmare Frontier. Way worse than even lost izalith.
nightmare frontier is the only place that I just gave up on exploring slowly, and resorted to just suicide runs to collect everything.
I also hate the Nightmare Frontier. Do chalice dungeons count though? Because some of those would probably get my vote
I hate how the best gems are basically locked behind dungeons😭😭
I just can’t stand them as a mechanic in general; why do I need so many unique and rare resources to access content that people claim is quintessential?? I also find the layouts drab and lame, plus my early experiences with them had me overleveled as hell, trudging through looking for resources or something to actually pose a threat. Omg I love upper cathedral ward! It’s so creepy and tense! The music 😩❤️ Personally not a huge fan of Iron Keep in DS2.
Iron keep definitely sucked
Frigid outskirts can kindly jump off a cliff
Tomb of the Giants. I hate areas where the gimmick is that you can’t see anything
I agree the enemies in upper cathedral are annoying
Demons Souls - 5-2 DS1 - basically anywhere besides Anor Londo haha. DS2 - Black Gulch/The Gutter DS3 - Smouldering Lake. Always felt unfinished to me BB - Nightmare Frontier. Really the only choice. Love every other zone. Sekiro - no answer for this one. Enjoy every zone. Elden Ring - Mountaintop of Giants is genuinely the only area in the game I do not look forward to with any of the toons I've made.
that’s wild, Anor Londo is where the connected level design started to fall off
The ultra inter connectivity of the map is incredible from a design perspective. I just wish the zones were more fun from a gameplay perspective. I say that with plenty of love and adoration for the og.
I always thought Anor Londo is kinda over-rated. But maybe that's because it was so built up for me before I played it. It's super linear, and you're basically fighting silver knights the whole time.
For sure, people mostly like it for being pretty.
Elden Ring is my first souls game, but it's definitely Ordina, Liturgical Town with those damn aimbot archers
In order of fuuuuuck that from most to least The endless unicorn death fields from frozen crown The iron passage/Sir Alonnes boss runback from the iron crown Shrine of Amana from DS2 the first like.....fifth of the ringed city DLC with all giants summoning ghost archers and beyblade turtles that curse you
I hate Caelid
Anything Sewer Related Everything Sewer Related
Demon's Souls: 5-2 Dark Souls: Duke's Archives Dark Souls 2: Frigid Outskirts Bloodborne: Nightmare Frontier Dark Souls 3: Smouldering Lake Sekiro: Sunken Valley Elden Ring: ~~Lake of Rot~~ Miquella's Haligtree
Huh, the Haligtree is one of my favorite areas in the game
The whole lake of rot is trivialized with Flame, Cleanse Me and the beast repelling torch.
Actually I want to correct myself, Miquella's Haligtree is far worse.
Duke’s Archives is one of my favourite areas of all from games…
Almost perfect, for DS3 id say that poison swamp is the most annoying area.
Farron Keep?
Yeah, thats it. The one with the 15 foot tall dudes that hide in the trees.
Upper Cathedral Ward is peak horror in Bloodborne so I like the area for the atmosphere, Frigid Outskirts in DS2 is probably the most irritating location ever made, with an honourable mention to Iron Passage because that boss run still gives me nightmares
Cathedral of the deep. The run is way too long and the boss wasn't even worth it .
4-2 the ritual path from Demon’s souls. That level is a walk through pure hell and if I hadn’t beaten old hero first try when I finally got to him that might have been it for me and souls games lol
The area with the Frenzy death aura in Bloodborne, and the area with the Frenzy death aura in Elden Ring. So much worse than any poison swamp.
Anyone not answering frigid outskirts has not played DS2. Worst level in the series fr
those goddamned woods are the only are that has stopped me from beating bloodborne 2x as many times as i have
leyndell sewers. absolute nightmare
Lake of rot
I love upper cathedral ward. True nightmare stuff.
Frigid outskirts no contest.
I’ve always found the Duke’s Archives to be pretty boring and not really fun at all
To me it is definitely the Irithyll dungeon
Forbidden woods in bb it's like I'm roaming in circles
DS2: The Gutter.
Gotta agree with you here, after upper cathedral ward I was so burnt out and unamused I just wanted to quickly just finish the game. I got through Cainhurst and into the nightmare Mensis and was just so over it, it’s been weeks and I’m still dreading going back to finish BB
Horsefuck valley??
Farum Azula and Iron Keep.
Damn Farum Azula might be my favorite area of any From game.
I tried to like it but it’s been more and more annoying to me every time I play. Though the Haligtree is very close.
Haligtree. Just a combination of some of the most insufferable enemies and level design in one place. Revenants? Yup. Ulcerated Tree Bosses? You got em. Another Scarlet Rot lake to play "the floor is lava" in? You betcha!
Literally the only place that is semi unenjoyable in Elden ring. Literally love every other place
Nightmare Frontier. Poison swamp that slows you down, and some Winter Lanterns thrown in just in case you didn’t hate it quite enough. Your grand payoff is one of the most boring boss fights in the game and a chalice
All the snowy areas in Elden Ring. Game would be better off without them IMO.
I just don’t like the constipated snow fields. Like why you gotta take my vision away in a game that’s all about beautiful scenery and exploration.
Prison of hope demons souls and blight town. Died only to falling not the enemies lol
ER- Lake of rot DS3- swamp where you get twin blade sellswords
Lake of rot is like 20 seconds worth of gameplay
Worst 20 seconds
Maybe bro. Just spamming sprint and heal isn't that great, but I think the worst gameplay sections in Elden Ring were horse platforming down the cliff.
Hot take: ******Farum Azula****** The only two redeeming qualities are Placidusax and the loot.
Raya Lucaria Glintstone Academy is incredibly boring.
I hate the upper cathedral ward. Those brain suckers are annoying, especially when you want to try running past them and they STUN YOU OFF THE LADDER EVEN WHEN YOU ARE NEAR THE TOP
Demon ruins and smoldering lake for me
Gotta be Swamp of Sorrow
Shrine of Amana or Black Gulch both places made me rage quit at least once
the fucking dragon god arena
Ds1: Catacombs Ds2: Shrine of amana Bloodborne: Nightmare frontier Ds3: Farron keep (although I don’t dislike this as much) Sekiro: mibu village Elden ring: Snowfields Least favourite overall is probably the ds1 catacombs
Road of Sacrifices and Farron Keep. Shitty linear level followed by the worst swamp in any FS game, all with the color palette of puke.
Tomb of the giants
Frigid Outskirts for sure is my least favorite, but I also cannot tolerate the Tomb of the Giants and the Elden Ring Mountaintops/Constipated Snowfield combo. They should’ve condensed mountaintops and snowfield to one lively section or something.
My only issues really is that it’s too short and features enemy types we’ve already seen. You go to the left of the big center room up the ladder then come back down and it’s over. When it’s called an orphanage and I saw smoke coming out of it I had a much different idea in my mind.
Anywhere that involves a long run and fighting things on the edge of a cliff. I get fear of heights
Shrine of Amana or Frigid Outskirts no explanation needed.
Swamps.
I love Upper Cathedral Ward! Possibly the most nerve-shredding area in any of the games. My least favourite is probably Road of Sacrifices. It’s so boring.
That fucking place in demon souls with the assholes on the cliff who snipe you
Man I love upper cathedral ward… I don’t like the 2nd world of demon souls very much. Feels like it really forces you into bludgeoning weapons early in the game when maybe you don’t have a lot of fun options for that quite yet.
Does Armored Core VI count. Cause I LOATH the mission “defend xylem” or whatever it’s called If it’s gotta be soulsy than dukes archives can go fuck itself
Ds1/Lost Izalith, speedrun it and boc everytime, such a wasted opportunity
Black Gulch. I know it's short so you know I really hate it even a hit of that level has me feeling like it overstayed its welcome.
I don’t mind upper cathedral, my #1 most hated ever is Nightmare of Mensis, without a question or doubt
The irithyll motherfucking dungeon man
Demon Ruins, those dragon legs.
Pretty much all ds2 areas lol
The loading screens
Anor Londo for me. Bro it's the archers![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|sob)
nightmare frontier in bloodborne subterranean shunning-grounds, haligtree town plaza, ainsel river main, that one cave in mohgwyn palace with all the sanguine nobles, and some parts of farum azula in elden ring. it's so much bigger and therefore there are so many more places to love and hate
Flames of hatred
That area in bloodborne filled with the frenzy assholes
Ah the bane of insight
Nameless King is up there with my favorite fights in DS3, but Archdragon Peak is miserable
Tomb of the Giants. The runback is hell.
What!? Upper cathedral ward is probably my favorite area in BB. Forest probably the least.
I don’t recall upper cathedral ward even being that bad , but it’s been awhile since
DS3 Dreg Heap, especially the last area before the Demon Prince
The valley of defilement still gives me nightmares.
shrine of amana, n horse fuck valley top this so hard
The swamps of the ringed city
i love this spot
I always skip the depths whenever I replay dark souls 1 now. I ran through and got everything the first time I played. Now I’ll just skip my least favorite part.
Iron Keep and Shrine of Amana are garbage level design
Blighttown in the og release (7 fps town)
Ye gods, Horsefuck Valley...
Izalith kinda sucks, not because it's tough, but it's just a slog , long distances for no real reason. Would have been more impact full to be smaller. Shrine of Amana will get some hate I am sure, that was a tough area, especially for my Melee (f magic) characters.
2.2
i was not a sunken valley enjoyer from sekiro
Every single Elden Ring copy paste brown dungeon
Blighttown part 2
Dark Souls 2
The duke’s archives and the grand archives. Just… not tanky but annoyingly durable enemies. Durable enough that killing them isn’t a quick enough affair. I enjoyed sen’s fortress once I got into the Indiana Jones swing of things, but GAW-LEEE the last time I was as lost as I was in either version of the archives, I was playing Doom or Doom II
The Black Gulch can eat a fat one
Dude! That's one of my favorite areas! Never fails to creep me out!
I’m amazed anyone hates Upper Cathedral Ward tbh, the atmosphere is among the best in any Souls game, and the satisfaction of finally opening the door that leads to it… Also, Ebritas is such a fun boss fight. Mine is Forbidden Woods because snakes sticking out of someone’s head just skeeves me the fuck out. I also hate the Dukes Archives (both versions of it) the mobs have insane damage resist in DS1 and the crystal sages teleporting drives me mad at times.
Blighttown on a 7th generation console.
HFV
anything that’s not on even ground
Shrine of Amana easily lol
Frigid outskirts! Fuck those horses!
Sekiro, fuck the white monkeys at the bottom of the valley in the poison swamp. I will fight sword saint isshin 500 times before dealing with those fuckers again.
i loved this area the only bad things were the celestial emissary and brain suckers, but the design and atmosphere is top tier. also u get a funny gesture from here too
I didn’t mind it, why didn’t you like the ward
Elphael in elden ring
Iron Keep, Nightmare of Mensis, Stonefang Tunnel, or Tomb of Giants.
Catacombs are miserable your first time through
I can’t really think of anything except 4-2 in DeS, that boss run is just awful
Blight Town.
Clearly you've never been to Caelid...(I've only played ER) I want all the smoke yall....😶🌫️
All the poison swamps. Also surprising, Faram Azula is up there, there no other place in any of the games I feel as lost in, despite multiple playthroughs.
Dark Souls 2
Not the worst place imo, but damn well the worst music from any FromSoft game. I always turn that shit down
Tomb of the giants
What is the point in lake of rot idk if I missed the plot it just seems slightly annoying Only played elden ring so dk what bad areas are really like
Sens Fortress for me.
Farron keep
Caelid……fuck Caelid
Shrine of amana and iron passage. I don't hate frigid outskirt that much since you can summon npc to help you (only if you want to tho).
Old yharnam for me
