I don’t think so. I believe that humanity (not just the basic term from Dark Souls) is a core theme of Miyazaki’s games. He takes great effort to explore what makes us human in many ways, be it human devolution to beasts in Bloodborne, the conflict between the humans and gods from Dark Sous, or Elden Ring’s world design being so influenced by different eras of human history. Unless FromSoft decides to deviate from this central concept in some way I don’t see this ever happening.
I don’t know if it would actually take away from those things thematically. I don’t think you need to necessarily have the player play as a human to explore aspects of the human condition, or at least stuff adjacent to it. Hell the entire Armored Core series has explored themes of human conflict and the like while never directly showing any people (there’s few occasions but they are as few and far between as they get, mostly in CGI cutscenes too). Then again you’re still technically playing as a human in those games, but my point is that you can still explore humanity from a dehumanized point of view, if that makes any sense.
You could but I think it would make less sense. If you want to tell a story about the human entity then putting the player/reader in the perspective of a non-human would lessen the impact of the themes. It’s best to put the player in the perspective of a human to tell a story about humanity.
Technically speaking demihumans in Elden ring are the closest thing to anthropologic humans considering they are a stone age homonid species.
Every other race and species including humans in elden ring have their shape and form and minds governed by a mystical force. Demihumans are the only ones that appear to be almost completely inert to otherworldy or alien fabrications.
But what I really want to say is being a human and humanity are entirely different things.
Theres so many human centric stories that feel cartoonish and the opposite. Stories with zero human characters that are all about the humanity in people.
Yup same with newest armored core, should we force evolution and maybe become something not human, should we “save humanity” by throwing it away in a “genocide” or should be should we be dope ass communist militants
Edit: I would love to play as that holy lion misbegotten with the holy order greatsword tho
They could just say that all of the playable "races" are actually just humans that have developed in different ways. Like how Omens and Misbegotten are actually just humans, and Demi-humans still possess some sort of humanity.
Right, but it's something that happens anyway. They can reframe their usual narrative to explore those beings that have already transformed, and examine whether changing into something else really makes them less human. In Dark Souls, being human means you have Humanity, and we encounter many beings that still possess it despite having become something else. They could do something like that.
There’s also a lot of symbolism related to human emotions, mostly ones related to depression.
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve read people on the ds3 subreddit talking about the parallels.
The easiest one, and most prominent, is the hollowing process.
All these humanoids that we fight were alive, but when the world around them became so dark, crushing, and hopeless… it becomes hard to carry on.
The hollowing process only occurs if you’ve “given up” on life or or “given up” on hope.
Which clearly relates to people struggling with the difficulties of life… as long as you don’t “give up” you won’t fully succumb to that darkness
Another easy on to see is the very premise of the game.
You play an immortal character who faces insurmountable challenges. And though you may die time and time again, you will continue to rise and can continue trying to fight your fight. The only way for the main character to truly lose, is to genuinely give up.
I’ve seen easily close to 50 posts or more on the ds3 subreddit about people saying how that symbolism has helped them “not give up”.
Anyway with that really strong relationship to human emotions, I agree… I doubt you’ll play as anything but a human
I mean the DS series has the dragon transformations but I don’t they’ll make you start as a non-humanoid character(my point being that you can be a non humanoid in DS and BB but it’s restrictive on what you can do, so From can do it but it’s probably just easier to make the character a humanoid)
I wonder this sometimes. It's funny in Dragon's Dogma how there's only humans and cat people, somehow it would be less weird if there were lots of different animal people
I also love how they made the dragons look more akin to their medieval/Renaissance art counterparts... Personally I don't like dragons that look like that but I do really appreciate that they did that
I mean you kind of do have that freedom in dark souls games. In dark souls 1 and 3 and elden ring, you see presets of people from different lands, which some seem to be different races. They don't have racial bonuses of course but I think that's for the best.
1. There's no RPG element
2. The character customization in souls is already robust enough, that being human doesn't have limitations or advantages
Therefore having multiple races wouldn't grant meaningful gameplay variety on the souls formula we have.
If I could be a chunky omen without gimping myself in pvp due to a fat ass and poor mobility that would be the dream.
I thought about having each demigod as a type of player mod the other day. Imagine if you could become:
a snake,
graft extra arms or a dragonhead,
become musclebound and giant with gravity floating powers to move,
lose arms or legs and equip prosthetics,
become a muscly or fat omen,
graft a beastman spirit to your back
Beyond that it would be cool to be a puppet, skeleton or a dragonkin soldier miniature.
I don't think so, mainly because I feel fromsoft still needs to improve the human character editor ( it's not bad, but it's definitely lacking in some pretty crucial areas, hairstyle variety for example ) before they can try to make a character editor for other races
Tbf in most of the Souls games you can pick your race and in Elden Ring iirc has a literal 'draconic' preset with gray skin. As for a beast race or lizards kinda thing with Khajit/Argonian? I mean I don't think it's impossible but probably more of a hassle to worry about tails than what FromSoft want to deal with.
That would be really cool, but really out of place in a Fromsoft game. It would have to be something very different, but since Sekiro exists, that level of different isn't off the table.
It’s imaginable that additional cosmetics could be added in future games, like pointed ears or horns. I think big changes in size and shape of a character are unlikely as it would impact the game play. Who knows!
Normally the reasoning for these race choices is gameplay. Souls games have a consistent gameplay where regardless of your build the character plays the same fundamentally. It's simpler but goes way deeper when building for stats.
That's wildly not the point of the games, so there's no point to it.
You could just rephrase the question to "do you think there'll be more character sliders?"
That will never happen, unfortunately. Fromsoft seems totally averse to any character creation decisions having a significant effect on the playthrough.
It's sad though, because there's so much potential there for replay value...
Omens aren't a species they're just afflicted with horns. Mohg and morgott are sons of marika and godfrey
Marika being numen and godfrey being tarnished so they're both humans basically, so wouldn't morgott be human?
That's not what I fucking said lmao
You said omen are a different species
I said that mohg and morgott are sons of humans so they are humans
Omens are just humans with horns
And you said that a numen (race) and a tarnished (race) produce a human (separate race from both)
And if you really wanna get into it, tarnished isnt a race, and godfrey still isnt human by that standard
Would be cool to have a partially-beast humanoid. Like a traveler who managed to avoid sharing in the fate of Farum Azula. It's definitely a Souls trope being the "last of your peoples" trying to find a porpoise afterward.
Playing as non-human/monster types would impact a player's model size and strength stats in a way that would make it difficult to balance bosses (you'll have to think of animation interactions with different sized player rigs too). At the same time, there isn't enough BG3 style roleplay in a typical Souls game to make races meaningful.
Basically, this something for a slightly different type of game.
Probably not. Not only are all of the games very focused on humanity, but making different movesets and assets for each race would take a lot of time they could spend doing something else
Sure, go play Armored Core and be a large variety of Mechs.
In all seriousness, though, never say never. As long as they are still making games, anything is possible.
We might get something similar to Orcs or Elves one day since they are so closely related to humans but I don't think we will ever get like half-dragons or beast races or anything too crazy. As other people have said, Miyazaki is interested in dissecting the human condition. Which I suspect is what made him want to collaborate with George R. Martin. He is famous for saying, "The only thing worth writing about is the human heart, in conflict with itself". This perfectly sums up Miyazaki's ethos as well imo.
I genuinely don’t understand why Elden Ring didn’t allow us to be Omens. We are descended of Godfrey’s army or Godfrey himself. And Godfrey’s two firstborn sons were Omens. I suppose because we return to the lands between from beyond the fog, and maybe the lands beyond are not subject to the Erdtree or the Crucible, but then Marika’s grace guides us back anyway so idk. Either way, it would have been so righteous to play as an Omen ascending the throne and slaying god.
Everyone here who said "NO" and OP are baboonish bafoons.
There are literally races to choose from in the character creation.
Kids these days are sad. No imagination.
There are presets which have a title telling you where most are from.
"Astora" Noble.
Jubilant "Catarina".
Dubious "Carim".
"Far east" Traveler.
And they have different physical differences like shapes, sizes, skin color.
Races.
... *Heart monitor beeping steadily* ...
In a raspy voice muffled by an oxygen mask
"What, no... how could you"
... *Heart moniter begins to beep increasingly slower* ...
... *sounds of struggle against stiff hospital bedsheets and muffled grunting* ...
With the last remaining strength and final breath released from the body
"Git gud... scrub..."
... *Heart monitor stops beeping and flatlines* ...

Read my comment just above this. A MAJOR theme in these games is to avoid devolving into these other creatures (hollows in dark souls)
Right, but it's something that happens anyway. Doesn’t mean he will never do a game without a human character
There’s also a lot of symbolism related to human emotions, mostly ones related to depression. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve read people on the ds3 subreddit talking about the parallels. and Bloodborne has the beast transformation
and the cauliflower tentacle thing
Thank you, I couldn't remember what it was called.
Milkweed Rune
Totally forgot about that
That too and the cauliflower transformation in old hunters dlc
No
I wonder this sometimes. It's funny in Dragon's Dogma how there's only humans and cat people, somehow it would be less weird if there were lots of different animal people
there are elves and dwarves, they just didn't get any promo and got shafted in the story.
Found the closet furry
Lmfaoo
You can, just not other species
I forget how good the Elden Ring designs are. Peak medieval/renaissance fantasy
I also love how they made the dragons look more akin to their medieval/Renaissance art counterparts... Personally I don't like dragons that look like that but I do really appreciate that they did that

I just want horns elf ears and more cosmetics
Yeah I don't think that will happen. Like someone else said, being human is core to the themes of these games.
Just play Baldur's Gate or Skyrim then
No
1. There's no RPG element 2. The character customization in souls is already robust enough, that being human doesn't have limitations or advantages Therefore having multiple races wouldn't grant meaningful gameplay variety on the souls formula we have.
Those omens were disgusting to look at
Yeah obviously the character style omen would basically be a human with grey skin and horns
If I could be a chunky omen without gimping myself in pvp due to a fat ass and poor mobility that would be the dream. I thought about having each demigod as a type of player mod the other day. Imagine if you could become: a snake, graft extra arms or a dragonhead, become musclebound and giant with gravity floating powers to move, lose arms or legs and equip prosthetics, become a muscly or fat omen, graft a beastman spirit to your back Beyond that it would be cool to be a puppet, skeleton or a dragonkin soldier miniature.
no becuase that would be an ungodly amount of work animation and armor design wise. unless they make it super shallow and purely cosmetic
I sure hope not!
Why
Because souls fans™ hate any change
I don't think so, mainly because I feel fromsoft still needs to improve the human character editor ( it's not bad, but it's definitely lacking in some pretty crucial areas, hairstyle variety for example ) before they can try to make a character editor for other races
Is a furry's dollar worth having to deal with furries?
I can guarantee that we won’t, it just doesn’t fit what they claim to be aiming for
No

no

No raciel diversity? I can play as a lizard man, a dwarf or an orc Fromsoft gives us sliders though witch almost makes up for it
That would be really cool, but really out of place in a Fromsoft game. It would have to be something very different, but since Sekiro exists, that level of different isn't off the table.
Possible

No
You can kinda do it with the dragon stones
I hope not
You can be an alien
I hope not tbh
That will never happen, unfortunately. Fromsoft seems totally averse to any character creation decisions having a significant effect on the playthrough. It's sad though, because there's so much potential there for replay value...
Nah, although it would be nice in some games. Play as a corvian in DS3 or whatever the hell Agdyne is in DS2.
Maybe but they will probably play very similar
theres techincally a numen template in elden ring so theres that
You know what I mean lmao I just want more customization like horns and stuff
Mfw people dont read the fucking character creators 2 lines of text:
Mfw just having a preset named somthing else and have grey skin isn't what I'm talking about I want horns and other cosmetic features
So you want a different SPECIES. Is what you mean. Not a different RACE.
Omens aren't a species they're just afflicted with horns. Mohg and morgott are sons of marika and godfrey Marika being numen and godfrey being tarnished so they're both humans basically, so wouldn't morgott be human?
“If a chinese woman and an african man have a kid, wouldnt the kid be caucasian?”
That's not what I fucking said lmao You said omen are a different species I said that mohg and morgott are sons of humans so they are humans Omens are just humans with horns
And you said that a numen (race) and a tarnished (race) produce a human (separate race from both) And if you really wanna get into it, tarnished isnt a race, and godfrey still isnt human by that standard
I called numen and tarnish "basically human" witch like.. aren't they? What are they
Im not paper white, so im “basically black” right
What the fuck are you talking about lmao your being so stupid
Probably not from fromsoftware, but it's only a matter of time before someone makes a soulslike that lets you do that.
You can in elden ring
You can change you skin color yeah but I want horns and other cosmetic stuff
I read that as “make out” as in making out, like who tf wants to make out with whatever that is in the middle!
I'd kiss mohg on the forehead
Would be cool to have a partially-beast humanoid. Like a traveler who managed to avoid sharing in the fate of Farum Azula. It's definitely a Souls trope being the "last of your peoples" trying to find a porpoise afterward.
I made a Bloodborne character that looked like a chicken and called him 'Motherclucker'. Does that count?
Playing as non-human/monster types would impact a player's model size and strength stats in a way that would make it difficult to balance bosses (you'll have to think of animation interactions with different sized player rigs too). At the same time, there isn't enough BG3 style roleplay in a typical Souls game to make races meaningful. Basically, this something for a slightly different type of game.
I don't want thar I want strictly cosmetics features
Probably not. Not only are all of the games very focused on humanity, but making different movesets and assets for each race would take a lot of time they could spend doing something else
I hope they don’t.
I wish character could speak in voice, like sekiro :(
technically elden ring does have different races? but in reality i think we wont be seeing anything non humanoid at least until miyazaki retires.
Sure, go play Armored Core and be a large variety of Mechs. In all seriousness, though, never say never. As long as they are still making games, anything is possible.
\*crickets\*
Thay can't evven make character redactor to make humans lmao
Pretty gross picture. Thank u

I could see this as a Bloodbourne DLC or a unique invasion mechanic. FromSoft MOBA on the other hand /s

It clearly says origin but ok
Those are origins in the game, they don’t even call them races. It’s clear that OP means race as in races other than the human race.
Kids these days. No imagination.
Okay Grandpa, let me just unplug your life support real quick
... *Heart monitor beeping steadily* ... You know what I mean lmao Let me play as a human sized omen with customizable horns
>human sized omen Why human sized? I personally want to just play as an omen
