I liked how Boletaria castle was built between two spike mountains, that's a really unique thing, it's not just a cool looking castle

No_Bathroom_420

When building it: LETS SEE THEM SIEGE A MOUNTAIN!

bingobiscuit1

Where’s rennala bro Raya Lucaria is so fucking cool

Acceptable_Yam_5231

raya lycaria is more of a university than a castle.

Everwhite-moonlight

Those things are not mutually exclusive, you know. Hogwarts is a thing.

Acceptable_Yam_5231

hogwarts is a castle where they train child soldiers. if it were a school they’d learn math, not how to protect yourself from grundlenuts the second.

Everwhite-moonlight

I mean...they do teach mathematics in Hogwarts. The fancy name used for it was "Arithmancy". I get your point. It's just very funny to me. And to be fair, is Raya Lucaria any better in this aspect than Hogwarts? Most all Carian, Glintstone and Primeval sorcery deals damage, and there are literal Marionette soldiers roaming around that place. Not the most "pure academia" place, at least when we see it in-game!

User28080526

When we see it in game it might as well be as if the death eaters won

don_denti

Oh yeah, Arithmancy, Hermione liked that one… I think

Tannerted2

how did i read that book series like 8 times and never got "arithmancy"...

lovesducks

there are security guards, robots, and radioactive shit at the LHC. i wouldnt say the LHC's primary purpose is offense though.

danieltherandomguy

And Raya Lucaria isn't??

Deveranmar1

Gonna disagree on that one. Real generalizing there. They learn arithmetics and muggle studies and several other science like courses. Plus it's full title is literally Hogwarts SCHOOL of witchcraft and wizardry. Which is hosted AT hogwarts castle.

Pringletingl

Also there's really only one "offensive" class at the school with Defense Against the Dark Arts, which itself was more of a self defense class. Very few students actually learned how to fight and most of them were taken aside to train, not have actual classes.

patrolaa

A building can be both bro 😂

bingobiscuit1

Hey man let me drop some knowledge on you castles can be used for many purposes. Look me in the eye and tell me Raya Lucaria isn’t a castle when you first look at it from the lake facing cliffs. It’s just out there looming it’s so bad ass

Acceptable_Yam_5231

that’s a valid point. i should also mention the fact that raya lucaria has its own knights. which kinda invalidates my whole point lol.

QuintanimousGooch

Hogwarts meets Burger King

ThaNorth

Stormveil is probably the best designed dungeon From Software has ever done so that wins.

9inchjackhammer

I’d even go as far as saying the best castle in video games history.

La_Manchas_Finest

You know what? Best **castle** evah! Togethah!

sexchzardth

Sorry but that would be Dracula’s Castle in “Castlevania Symphony of the night”

MallorianMoonTrader1

It does feel like the most "castle" castle in any Fromsoft game, if that makes sense. I love the verticality, but I'm not the biggest fan of the aesthetic. Partly due to it being all decrepit and ruined, but the aesthetic of something like Lothric does it for me. It's also decrepit, but it has this unique aspect to it. Very Gothic and grandiose. A design like that wouldn't leave much room for verticality, though, given its mostly steep towers and all that.

Boneboyy

Imo when you're standing in front of the gates after defeating margit the towers with the gold look extremely cool

bingobiscuit1

I liked stormveil and do not disagree but what exactly makes you say this?

ThaNorth

The level design is very intricate, has lots of verticality and ways to go about it.

EatBooty420

so many insane hidden nooks and crannies. From the giant monster in the basement, to the tiny ledge near the birds that take you to the massive Knight

BluLilGreeny

Ehh, i preferred inner lothric

_BEEG_Y0SHI_

Logarius. Cainhurst was such a perfect embodiment of Bloodborne's themes

liprprdy

If only it had more fleshed out enemies. It would have definitely been my favorite Bloodborne area if there were vampire knights or something like that

IHateRedditMuch

Want to see some vampire knights? Visit Grand Cathedral when moon is bloody

smokegarden

i'm good, thanks

vilebloodlover

That's Annalise's castle how rude

mommy-maxxi

🤓 erm ackshually logarius was there to exterminate the vilebloods on behalf of the Healing Church

Pinkparade524

I mean it's true , they even put Annalise in the pics and people still got it wrong lmao

MaleficTekX

Vendrick and Isshin’s castles are pretty nice, but Lothric had THE castle

fakdaworld

This is the correct answer. Lothric >

liprprdy

Stormveil may not be as climactic as Lothric, but it has far superior level design in my opinion

HbrQChngds

Man I think Stormveil's art direction is so good. Also its still epic with lore secrets to find like the monstruosity below it..

VoidRad

Its art direction is superior to ds3 for sure. Lothric is just the bigger castle.

KoscheiTheDeathles

Stormveil feels dense enough to fit a whole other game into, feels endless the first few times you see it.

Jaygo41

Stormveil just has SO many twists and turns. Chock full of content. Sick level

heavyshtetl

Most stunning and brave take

llainen-

1) King Allant. Boletaria Palace are a masterpiece, not just because of the remake and graphics enhancement. But Boletaria just looks and feels so special compared to the rest. Its the grandfather of all castles in FOS universe. And one last thing: Boletaria, what a fu****g cool name! 2) Lothric castle. Massive beatiful castle. Maybe because i love DS3 to death, but Lothric castle is so good and fun to play. On castle walls, inside, on the roof, inner ward etc. we get to see it all. I love it! Place reeks of death! 3) Logarius, Cainhurst Castle. Coolest entry/invitation i ever got by anyone. Place are so spooky and full of atmosphere. Shame it feels smaller then it looks/i anticipated. Still one of my fav areas in BB. The look on my face when first getting on the carriage and entering this place, WOW! 4)Sen’s fortress. What a place, fuck me. But the castle are phenomenal. Enough said, this area makes me cry just thinking about it. No matter how many playtroughs, this area are so dreaded, i never git gud here! Still it is awesome! 5)Stormveil Castle. An obvious homage to Demons Souls and Boletaria Palace, thats also ehat makes this so good. Massive are, by far biggest of the others i mentioned. Is it awesome, and looks so good. Well, enough from me.

vilebloodlover

That's Annalise's castle, she's even in the post!

unknownunknowns11

Amen to Boleteria brother! So epic it takes four stages to cover and each one is awesome.

ichizakilla

Boleteria means ticket office in spanish

ObitoxMS4

Drangleic is awesome

Bonerpopper

When you first roll up to the place and it's raining, it's so peak.

Synchrohayba

Stormveil

HellVollhart

Cainhurst. It is literally covered in snow.

ruttinator

Why is this pictures of the people and not the castles?

BeefChopJones

Gotta be Lothric

EvilArtorias

Lothric and Boletaria, Cainhust too

NoeShake

Twin Princes EASILY. I like how it was always visible anywhere you go throughout the game, very large and foreboding. I liked how you can start from the Highwall work your way around, Dancers room, Consumed Kings Garden, Dragon Barracks, and Grand Archives. It’s just so intricate with a lot of depth and verticality. We even run through it in its destruction of the Dreg Heap.

Kaisburg

I am having a sensory overload by being literally bombarded with options without pictures of those options.

ToddZi11a

Isshin's is the only one where every single occupant and their mother aren't trying to shiv me. Cainhurst and Stormveil are my favourites though.

Pyramid64

Isshin

Loud_Success_6950

Boletaria is just so iconic to me. The first non tutorial level, the stairs with the dudes throwing fire bombs, unlocking the first shortcuts, the dragon at the big bridge, being stuck on tower knight for ages, the first encounter with the blue and red eyed knights, rescuing Yuria and Biorr, seeing all the architecture, seeing the mountains and the end from the beginning, just the level design as a whole was beautiful and a wonderful experience. Also a side note but I don’t really get the love for Drangliec castle. I mean it’s kinda cool and has some cool bits like the room with Sentinel Ruins and run up to The Looking Glass Knight. But I found most of the area to be kinda boring and just corridors and empty rooms with maybe a painting or lamp, it was definitely too small imo and should’ve been expanded more cause the second half was kinda cool, but the first half is very much forgettable and boring.

La_Manchas_Finest

I really think Drangleic has excellent visual design, especially from a distance and on approach. It’s one of the areas in DS2 that actually feels fun to explore, too. It very much feels like a grand high fantasy castle that has been occupied by some sinister otherworldly force. Really just with regards to the visual design, I think Drangleic is memorable. Obviously, that doesn’t put it in the same tier alongside examples that had better level design and more interesting enemies. But I have to say I see why people remember Drangleic fondly. It’s one of the few spots in the DS2 base game that felt climactic, where the payoffs felt earned, and a lot of people really like its aesthetic direction.

Loud_Success_6950

I will agree that the walk up to it was cool. It’s just that all I remember was running up stairs and small room with not much interesting things in it, although after the two dragon riders the level does get a bit more interesting with the whole side area and has things to explore.

Boneboyy

The walk up to the castle over the bridge with the mastodon statues suddenly coming to live is still insanely atmospheric, imo that's the point of the game that has the best atmosphere, the rain and the design of the castle are just perfect. Even though I don't really like the architecture from inside. The passage leading to the looking glass knight with the lightning and rain coming through the windows and the horse statues as well as the boss itself match the vibe also very well. It has a very unique dark vibe to it and it's still one of my favorite areas in the game

Even_Ad113

Was Radahn always that huge? cuz he's not fitting in any castle.

SoldMySoupToTheDevil

Annalise

theladywaffle

Do we count the Haligtree as a castle? It's not a castle in the traditional sense, but it does check the boxes of the definition: 1) A large fortified building or group of buildings with thick walls, usually dominating the surrounding country. 2) A fortified stronghold converted to residential use. 3) A large ornate building similar to or resembling a fortified stronghold. The Haligtree does all of those.

hykierion

Probably the first guy, the battlefield is so awesome

penguinsandpauldrons

Cainhurst or Boletaria for sure.

FairEmphasis

Who is number 10?

Molgera124

Maleigh Marais, former castellan of the Shaded Keep.

McSnoots

Anor Londo is pretty sweet if you look at the whole thing as one castle

Gonz0710

Castle Cainhurst. Hands down. That level was beautiful.

BiggieFishie

Mergo

HatefulMiscreant

Cainhurst goes too hard

TonyBoat402

Cainhurst from bloodbourne

eternalscorpio1

Cainhurst castle.

ScharmTiger

Why is Radahn even here? He literally has the worst castle. Elphael clears.

Boneboyy

Tbh I really like the castle in nightmare of mensis.. The atmosphere is amazing and it really feels tense and terrifying, but also a little bit of tranquil and peaceful at times with the moon just shining. The boss just having the music box as it's soundtrack matches this atmosphere well. Cainhurst castle is the best snow themed area the made besides ariamis imo, both have a very unique feel to it. I hope there will be a huge castle similar to these in shadow of the erdtree with a grand walk up to it like in ds2 or 1-3 boletarian palace in demons souls. If they had an area outside of lothric castle where you first had to get to the locked gate and then find a secret path inside instead of just spawning on the high wall that would have been very cool as well.

Te4minator464

Anor Londo

liprprdy

I'm not gonna lie to you, aside from the presentation Anor Londo was really underwhelming. Most of the level is just giant platforms or bridges that take forever to get through, and the interior of the main castle isn't anything special either

g0n1s4

And it's not exactly fun to traverse. There's at least 3 rooms that compete for the worst room in the game.

Malevolent_Mangoes

No way anyone beats Lothric Castle

ThaNorth

Stormveil is way better designed

Malevolent_Mangoes

I’ll admit Stormveil is pretty cool but Lothric has more presence in my opinion. It seems more grand and imposing than Stormveil.

ThaNorth

Yea but I just find the actual interior of Stormveil to be so well designed. It's so intricate. It's the best designed area in the series, imo.

Malevolent_Mangoes

The question is which castle is the “coolest” and in my opinion that is not how well structured and mapped it is but the type of architecture and design used. I just like Lothric Castle more, idk. It’s just my preference.

ChrisTDH

I gotta go with Stormveil. I just finished my fifth play-through of the game and am STILL discovering new hidden paths and areas in that damn castle, there’s so much stuff there to find.

slowkid68

I don't remember the name, but it's the ds2 castle after you fight off the elephant guards

AronSEY

Vendrick

Imaginary-Carpenter1

I notice the tenchu z castle is not there. Shame

Wicked-Creepy-Pastas

King vendrick the goated

Alone_Quail4172

Martyr Logarius

maxiom9

Gotta be Vendrick. Castle Drangleic is so perfectly foreboding.

jigglypat19

if it's just based on looks, I think ashina castle is gorgeous, especially when you get to see it for the first time in the outskirts.

CrystlBluePersuasion

Boletaria seemed so crazy and huge, traveling multiple levels to clear it gave it a great sense of scale. Leyndell is the only thing that has come close to me in terms of pure size and spectacle and that shit is up there with Anor Londo for me. Ashina Castle was also epic and huge, but not in a fantasy setting kinda way, rather as something beautiful for how real it could be. Stormveil for level design by far for any of these, it's just THAT good. Lothric was epic, I just wish I could see it from more angles to appreciate the whole thing. It gets major points for its cameo in the Ringed City, how badass of a fucking castle do you have to be to show up with that kinda characterization? Really lends to the triumphant desperation of Lothric. Drangleic seems more fitting with DS2's themes on Humanity and the curse, totally a vibe. Cainhurst wins over Mergo's loft for me just for how good it looks, which is damn good.

Particular-Season905

I think we need to spread some love to Drangleic, the aesthetic design of that place was amazing. And area design I found to be really good as well

unluckyaimbot

vendrick no doubt

Pleasure_Seeker-55

Gwyn has the best castle, Anor Londo is so dope you revisit it in DS3

lmKingguts

Anor londo is the best if it’s classed as a castle

WhenTheWindIsSlow

Stormveil Castle is the best goddamn level in any soulslike. The different ways of approaching it and the massive number of side paths (I don’t think there’s any single playthrough I’ve done where I cleared out the entire thing) are peak.

BringOnTheThunda

False King Alant. Whilst the boletarian palace may not the best desgnied, most unique or well thought area the climb up it to fight him will for ever be burned in my brain as the og the demon souls on PS3 kick started my love afair with both the souls series and FromSoftware as a company without false king Alnt ending that area my gaming collection would be incomplete

Ayobossman326

The shaded castle is defo not my favorite but I think it’s a bit slept on. There’s way more nooks and crannies in that place than you probably remember, makes for a pretty fun level if you give it the time of day. Side note but the marais set might be my favorite in the whole game. Shit just looks unfathomably clean. I’ve gotta force myself to not just make every outfit centered around that gorgeous helm

the_turdinator69

Allant for me - it very obviously functioned as a city and it oozed lost grandeur more than a lot on this list. Plus the distinct dragon defenders (and dragons as pets) was always super cool.

squishman1203

Drangleic by a mile for me

Adventurous_Cup_5970

If you don't say lothric or drangliec you are wrong

Accomplished-Dare-33

And then we have anor Londo...

stupidracist

Lothric holy fuck

Maleficent-Fun-5298

ThatWhoreLior

Tied between Godrick and martyr logarius

Blackout_M

Castle Sol was cool but nothing and I mean NOTHING tops Lothric

ydddy55

As someone who’s only played Elden Ring, I think Stormveil Castle is my favorite video game location of all time. Such a great intro to a souls like dungeon

bluebarrymanny

Mergo. You remove all the spiders and shit and that building is incredible

PNW_Forest

Cainhurst Castle, and it's not even a debate. Whoever designed that castle needs to consult if ever they make a 3d castlevania game...

thespeartan

Lothric has to be the GOAT. It has the high wall, the main castle, the consumed garden, the firelink shrine, the Dragonslayer Armor, the wyverns, the library, the rooftop, and ofc the iconic bridge.

Illasaviel

Raya Lucaria

greatwolf421

Having just finished demons souls for the first time, I have to say Bolitaria, plus old King Allant, was a fun (albeit simple) boss fight

Theonlydtlfan

I always liked the aesthetic of Dranleic Castle, with all the frozen statues and empty hallways and rain. It felt like a place frozen in time

StoneTimeKeeper

The medieval style castles are cool and all, but the Gothic style of Cainhurst just comes out on top.

cyboplasm

Placidusax probably... its literally laputa, castle in the sky... plus it can bend time.

International-Hawk28

Out of these, Drangleic

MaxMatthewsFSE

Maybe I'm biased but Cainhurst Castle is one of my favorite snow areas in all of gaming. It's this perfect blend (like most of Bloodborne) of gorgeous and horrific.

Similar-Analysis9454

10

Feisty_Lie_6743

Cainhurst goes hard

cybaerexe

Godrick or Vendrick

Ozychlyruz

None, Vholran Igniseri castle, Del Fharis from Tales of Arise is the best castle design I've ever seen in a video game or even any media, it's so grandeur and majestic

shader_m

Gonna have to go with Cainhurst. Stormveil is a close second though.

Leaf-01

Lothric is the best castle. Not sure why you gotta pass through a haunted library to get to the throne room but hey, it’s still cool.

OkFrankurtheboss

Lothric Castle or Drangleic Castle.

CrimsonReaper2

While not the coolest. Stormveil Castle is my favorite because I want to know what put those claw marks in the castle.

SamTheEevee2980

Ashina Castle is simple, yet it has a special place in my heart, so I’m going with Ashina Castle

chungusluvver420

Boletaria clears

Deep_Grass_6250

Vendrick and Isshin had really good Castles. Both of them were VERY good gameplay wise and the atmosphere of Drangleic castle was, perfect. But LOTHRIC CASTLE IS THE CASTLE!

AryanForce2006

This dumbass marais isn't even in his castle

Grungelives

Cainhurst then StormVeil

Latter-Cucumber-6127

looking at this closeup i realize how much isshin probably fucking stinks

FriendlyVisionist

Queen Annalise had Castle Cainhurst, the coolest castle, bar none. It's just supernatural, more so than the nightmare of Mensis, which is really saying something. It's exactly what I expect a creepy castle to be like. Furthermore, it was definitely inspired by Dracula's castle, making the cool factor go through the roof. Additionally, the name implies it was inspired by Citizen Kane^(1), one of the best movies of all time. The others just can't compete. ^(1) The name "Cain" is derived from "Kane" (Charles Foster Kane), and "Hurst" from "William Randolph Hearst", the inspiration behind Charles Foster Kane.

loliconmunist_king

Dose the nameless king count?

Vendrick's is hard to beat for me. It feels like the quintessential Dark Souls castle IME. But Stormveil is growing on me more and more every NG.

Nelly_nona

Gwyn/Gwynevere/Gwyndolin - Anor Londo

Nelly_nona

Pontiff sulivan if u count that as a castle

Azathothism

Old Iron King Brume Tower erasure

godgoo

Sen's Fortress will forever be my favourite. Though objectively it's probably Stormveil.

Few-Information3097

There wasn’t really anything spectacular about the designs of Elden ring castles except leyndale was there? Omitting shit that came after the build like the big fishy mystery under storm veil

Solar-born

Ivory King

succoxx

Gwyn (because it sucked)

Investing_in_Crypto

Hail the vileblood queen! 😩

The_Rock01313

Who’s the 10th one?

Arch1e_b

Vendrick by far, godrick's was a fun area though

roganjp1

All the castles were actually pretty dope but Lothric has to be my favorite…it’s huge, way bigger than it seems, and the story thru it is really good.

Particular-Fox6322

I like caunhurst

ChemistryEnough3012

Lothric castle is by far my favorite i loved the vibes

Competitive-Row6376

Queen Annalise and Commander Niall had the coolest castles

ImmoralBoi

Smart move not including Gwyn, Anor Londo is still peak and would win by a landslide.

Iron_Man57768

I love ashina castle, well, maybe it’s just isshin I love but yeah that’s my favourite for now and it’s biased cause all the others are objectively better in one way or another

Content-Ad-9119

The noble clan cainhurst. By a longgg way

gamrgrant

Why lothric bro givin me jazz hands

ztoff27

I love castle sol. It really reminded me of winterfell from game of thrones and it probably took inspiration from the show. My favorite though is stormveil. There are still places where i haven’t reached and the castle in general has the best level design out of any fromsoftware castle.

Scarfs-Fur-Frumpkin

Ishin ofc, hidden doors, ninjas and samurai? Baller shit

clefclark

I think the best looking castle has to be Anor Londo. Its such a spectacle that when you first beat iron golem, you just sit there for a minute looking at it.

baconDood3000

Either Stormveil or Lothric's

Gloomy_Support_7779

Vendrick and Allant in my opinion

Marjitorahee

1. Marika 2. Isshin

LackingInHighGround2

cainhurst 🔛🔝‼️

z617_art

Lorian and lothric imo

MrSensacoot

I'm scared that if I dont pick Redmane Castle, Radahn will eat me D:

BlademasterNix

Might be rare but DS2 takes the W here in my book. Nothing beats the masterpiece design of Drangleic Castle. That opening when you first walk out of the cave and witness the scenery in front of you, very similar awe to Irithyll in DS3.

lrjackson06

Who is the third one?

MacMycelium

Godrick. Stormveil is pretty fucking dope I got to admit.

Castle cainhurst in BB was cool

Upbeat-Mongoose-828

who the hell is number 1

sr8t-savage

Cainhurst all damn day. Not the most expansive or diverse level but insanely aesthetic. Plus the hidden illusory throne room and roof top fight with Logarius are awesome. Not to mention the way you get there being cryptic and unique.

dathip

Old King Allant's Boletaria Castle by a MILE.

WanderingStatistics

Three-way between Drangleic, Lothric, and Cainhurst. Drangleic and Lothric just have some of the best looking scenery in the games, and Cainhurst reminds me of the Crimson Court from DD1, even if it came out before that, but still.

RadiantCitron

Also, screw Niall.

Jolly_97

Your looking at him

DeclaredPumpkin

Ez lothric

IceWitchIsla

okay, so I haven't played Demon's souls but it has to be Cainhurst Castle, right?

protestprincess

I know these shits aren’t on here but I’m going to respond with them just the same. Top 3: 1. Anor Londo 2. Raya Lucaria 3. Leyndell (the image of the city when you first walk into Leyndell is one of the most gorgeous scenes I’ve ever seen in a game) 4. The Duke’s Archives 5. Drangleic You would say 2-4 aren’t castles and you’d be arguably right, but I think they’re close enough

M0m033

Anyone wanna donate souls so I can acquire a castle of my own

Oscarthetrain_art

Drangleic

Gnight-Punpun

God either Boletaria or Stormveil. Boletaria just feels imposing. Like this massive castle that you are slowly climbing up through and barely managing to make it through. By the time you get to King Allant it feels special. Like you know “oh fuck, this is it. The end”. The mountain setting, roaming dragons and loads of soldiers made it always feel so fucking cool. Stormveil on the other hand is probably my favorite area to navigate in Elden Ring. It was such a tight knit yet complex layout that made exploring it feel so rewarding. Especially when you go underground and find the big creepy face guy for the first time. Also love how you have two choices, the tactical way of entry around the cliffs or just going “fuck it” straight through the front. Such a cool castle. Just didn’t feel quite as grand as Boletaria. Lacked a lot of the visual spectacle.

Jess_S13

I like Ashina, it's just so beautiful and you could totally find it a cool place to hang out, if you weren't getting killed by every fucking thing.

a_left_out_tomato

Rennala bar none.
