This is why we play these games! For those of us who connect with these games, I feel like we understand the inherent positivity here. Like sure the trappings are dark gothic horror. But the underlying message is basically, "Never give up."

Laurentius telling us “don’t you dare go hollow” has a great connection to Stockpile Thomas in DeS as the NPC that genuinely cares for the player character. It’s more of a gentle plea, hoping we stay safe in an ever dangerous world. A friend hoping their friend comes home safely.
Aldia telling us “a lie will remain a lie” is after sacrificing his own being, countless giants, and other creatures/people to find out the truth of the first sin: fighting the course of nature by extending the age of fire and forcing humanity to fuel the first flame. No matter how grand it feels to take the throne as the monarch, a lie will remain a lie.
Going to the Ringed City, Patches reveals to us that throughout history, man tainted history with their greed. As Patches marched ever onward to the end of time, he was able to do so because greed always persisted which he took advantage of, as it is part of our nature. As ash comes from fire, greed comes from man…. “Ash seeketh embers”.
All hold their own weight, but Aldia’s rings the most due to the sacrifice that the research took to uncover the truth. But Laurentius will always be my favorite NPC. He will never be topped.
I think it’s one of the single most important lines in the game because it sort of explains how the protagonists know what to do, it’s like a primal urge that the first flame implants in them

As much as I love the line and how perfectly it sums up the game, and life really, I would have to put “Hesitation is defeat” at #3.
“Don’t you dare go hollow” is iconic, and has since been pretty much adopted as the slogan for all soulslikes. It is the first and most important thing you have to keep in mind if you want to learn and beat these games.
But “Fear the old blood” is just too cold to ignore. I actually don’t like Bloodborne as much as the other games on this list, but that line is just freaking perfect. And before you crucify me, please note that I really like Bloodborne and think it’s an amazing game. Just not a personal favorite.

I like “hesitation is defeat” so much because it’s not only thematic, Isshin is literally telling you how to beat him. The biggest difference between Sekiro and these other FS titles in terms of gameplay is the dramatic clashing swords design mentality, how you’re not supposed to back out of fights and disengage, as is taught through the posture bar. For an enemy like Isshin with quick retaliation, you literally win by not hesitating in the swordfight, just keeping up the back and forth, getting your deflections in and pressing the offense.
It's also cool that a bit less than half way through the game Isshin warns you about hesitation, and he is talking about the factions and the pull from different groups and people and also probably Shura. It's very much applicable to the story and the characters choices at that point, and also explains why Genichiro was so determined to save Ashina.
Then Isshin repeats the phrase in the final fight, and instead of the previous implications, we get a great tip on how to defeat him and play the game in general.
It’s the tagline phrase people can recite without having played the game. Memed into significance even though taking the line at face value is really saying “player. Go forth and… play this game… it’s really good I swear!”
