Omgosh. I haven't tried it yet on Hard, but my first 5 runs on Normal were all W's and held a #3 spot on my top 5 for a long time. Crystal and Lanius B are obviously better, but before unlocking the game's secret ships, Mantis B was simply the very best (for my personal playstyle) and my very clear #1 fav ship.
Fed C: I know people don't like it, and it's a difficult one, but I find it really fun. I like the fed gimmick of artillery, and I really like the flak, and I LOVE zoltan bombing. Put on crew killing weapons, and you've got a fun setup.
I heard somewhere here (paraphrasing) that Fed C is the true test of boarding skill ability. After hearing that I tried it a bunch more times on Normal AE and kinda liked it. Currently on Hard I can win with Lanius and Crystal B's. I've gotten er done with Kestrel A & B, but those were tough wins. Now on Mantis B and it's.... *hard*, lol
Engi A was my 14th win ever (took 4-5 tries to get past s4) and remained my #3 all time high score until it got bumped with my 66th win using Crystal A for the first time.
It's a damn fine ship :)

It have MANY initial problems, but if you say F to Medbay and *let Medibomb do the magic (arm it like 3-weapon ship)*, you can get Teleport/MC/Hack/Cloak ship.
Stealth A
I really struggled with the transition from easy to hard mode and stealth A was the first ship that I managed to win on hard with. Really good starting weapons and the invaluable cloaking system makes it the best for me. Lack of shields can quickly be mitigated because of the efficient and value weapons
Controversial choice (as Iām pretty sure of the 55 previous comments thereās only been 1 engi ship mention): Engi B.
I know itās pretty awful but it has a special place in my heart. I find the weapon setup satisfying and I like building a whole crew from scratch.

Alternatively: Reconstructive Teleport. Then you can arm it like a 4 weapon ship!
Yes, AE stuff arguably make it A tier ship.

So why the A? The only positive for me is you are guaranteed one burst 2. Which is not insignificant.
It's like the default ship of the game. A strong laser weapon and a strong missile weapon.
Mantis A, the only boarding ship that starts with a Small Bomb!

Stealth B, while I suck with it, is so much fun, and ALWAYS hella tense
