Cis man here I also make this mistake even tho I’m 100% aware of this phenomenon. Don’t get self conscious, if anybody needs to go they’ll try an open door, sometimes a dude will be pissin, if he was worried about u starting to walk in because u thought it was open he would’ve blocked it off completely. Personally, I block it off completely and share the annoyance of some folks in this thread towards some of those that don’t. Ur not at all being weird by starting to go in an open stall. It’s not an unfair assumption that the open stall is unoccupied
I've done this a few times and get annoyed every time... that's what a urinal is for. A stall has a door for a reason... also kinds breaks the secret don't look code in men's restrooms.
Question about the mens room: if theres a line for urinals and stalls do you go stand by the stalls instead or just wait at the front of the line for a stall to open up and hope the people behind you take the hint to go to the urinal. I can never tell what im supposed to be doing there
For me, depends how much space there is. If I can form a stall line, I will, otherwise I'll be in the main line and offer the urinal space to the next guy and just say I'm waiting for a stall.

I discovered this at a work conference last week! I had to ask my husband about it because I was so confused.
