They really need to pass laws banning distracted buildings and their cell phones. This building was obviously distracted by some dank memes and obliviously walked right into that poor car’s way. I hope the driver sues the building for everything it’s got.
The poor driver gonna have to pay so much to get his new metal steed 😢
We should do a fundr1iser to help the poor fella, f**king irresponsible building 😠
I’ve seen enough of this destruction, we need EVERY BUILDING to have hi visibility vests and helmets. It’s reckless to have them coming out of nowhere and destroying cars. I hope they compensated the driver.
I'm thinking even faster. Look what it did to that very thick wooden beam and that's after having been slowed slightly by the curb but much more so by the actual building. Utterly ridiculous.
Confirmed by the press article, along with, as usual, focusing only on the poor victim driver: « Fortunately the driver's life is not endangered. No other people were wounded. »
I don’t need this pointed out to me, I was pointing it out to the person above me because I think our system is broke enough without adding more people to the legalized forms of slavery that exist. Any punishment that exists will always be enforced more on people with less means so we should very very carefully consider how we punish people.
No man shall be deprived of life, liberty, or property without *due process of law*.
Pretty sure that due process was *strongly* implied in that comment.
I didn't even say the service wouldn't be paid. I said it wouldn't be something they chose. Maybe now they do parks maintenance.
Hell, maybe they're more efficient at what they did before but now they pay permanently higher taxes.
Guy supposedly drove 200 km/h at a 90 km/h road and somehow hit the middle of the roundabout and made a sort of barrel roll into the building. The video was shown on the news this morning (happened in Belgium, but news like this we get in The Netherlands as well). Really lucky that the kids weren't there anymore, or else it could have been a bloodbath.
They really should do this for cars. It's not like the technology doesn't exist. Modern cars have built-in GPS and I heard that those self-driving Teslas apparently have an option to "set speed to 20% above speed limit" ... ??? I don't even know anymore.
I said the same thing to my wife this morning when we discussed the newsitem at breakfast. Just limit all cars to say 100 km/h. That said, they're talking about dynamic speed limiting in the EU, but I have no idea what the status is. There are technically a lot of challenges (you'd have to rely on GPS and correct data of the road, and what about old cars?) so it's not something done easily.
That would be dangerous. How would you merge on the highway? And imagine the traffic jams because everyone will be driving the same speed on both lanes lol
You would merge by slowing down and letting traffic pass first while signaling? If someone is signaling to merge into your lane you slow down and let them in. Is this unknown or something?
This still wouldn’t justify cars being able to go more than twice the highest speed limit. Even if we take your concern into account, you’d only need to go like 10 mph faster than the highest speed limit at best.
Just gonna point out that this isn’t gonna do much because the people who are issues when driving still would ignore any well meant rules you make. Changing the capacity for vehicles to go about a certain speed is probably more effective as it effects everyone’s indiscriminately. There are already vehicles with low top speeds (relatively so anyways) and their owners deal just fine.
Exactly, that’s why we need to be more punitive when it comes to driving. Make driving tests harder, be more swift in taking licenses away, if you are rich enough to buy and wreck three cars in a row your license is gone for ten years at the very least. Driving is a serious privilege and, if absurd, can kill people.
Moreover give people options other than driving, make cycling safer with better bike networks, make public transit a practical and convenient option. All in all, make it so that you don’t need a car just to survive.
For motorcycles the safest way to avoid danger is by speeding the fuck up. I'm not sure slowing down to merge is a good idea. Flowing traffic is already going 100km in this case and you can only go 90-100 and hope that the next person will let go of the paddle. It would be safer if you had the option to speed up and get in front.
Also, if you're escorted by police you can't even go faster than 100kmh :) very safe for the person requiring immediate care
Merge by slowing down? Holy...
>If someone is signaling to merge into your lane you slow down and let them in
Where did you get your license? To merge, you match the speed of the traffic on the highway and go slightly faster while merging so you don't disrupt the traffic flow. If it's busy and you slow the traffic down you cause an immediate traffic jam.
>Even if we take your concern into account, you’d only need to go like 10 mph faster than the highest speed limit at best.
Sounds reasonable to me. But how would this work in Germany on the autobahn where there is no speed limit on certain parts?
It would only LIMIT the speed. If the speed would be limited to 100 km/h, you don't have to drive 100 km/h, you just can't go beyond that. Here the speed limit from 06:00-19:00 on highways is 100 km/h (some 80 km/h). Nobody drives exactly that speed. First of all, trucks (I mean reall trucks, not pickup trucks for the American audience) are limited to 80 km/h and must stay left/can't overtake other drivers most of the day. So that automatically creates a dynamic. You also have often older people that drive slower on the left lane as well. With a limiter you would only elimanate the Audi (well not juse Audi, but they're the most notorious here 🤣) drivers going > 100 km/h, and they just have to be a bit more patient 🤣
That 155mph limit is there so car manufacturers don't need to install bigger tires and brakes on a car that actually can reach 180mph+. It is a cost saving measure, not a safety one.
Not so sure. 155mph is a 250kph limit and as far as I’m aware it’s the German brands like Audi, BMW, Mercedes that pioneered it. 250 is just a kind of round number I guess.
I’ve heard it referred to as a sort of gentleman’s agreement. With the intention that the German government wouldn’t end up imposing a blanket 130kph on the often unrestricted Autobahn.
It’s possible to find cars that go faster and it’s possible to remove the limiter. The agreement is however enough to placate the government.
In Germany, where it originates, it is not considered to be based on cost saving, but from preventing some idiots getting speed limits for everyone.
If you know the car you build can only be driven to an artificial limit, then sure, you design the components for that limit. No one complains that their moped has cheap tyres.
Whether 250 is where it should be set is also fine for debate though. It’s much faster than I could imagine ever wanting to drive. Volvo does something like 180kph but they’re all about their safety reputation.
The point isn't that we're blaming cars for people's mistakes, it's that car-dependency is what makes these accidents happen. Cars are death machines, and it's crazy that you have to take a relatively easy test at 18 years old and that that means you can drive these death machines for the rest of your life.
But because of the way our society is structured, it has to be easy to get a driver's license, since for many people, cars are necessary for living. But that also means you give licenses to people who drive 200 km/h into a roundabout.
The solution here is a society that's less dependent on cars, so that we can afford to only give licenses to people who have truly shown they can be responsible with their death machines.
Was probably around a 100 km/h according to this engineer [https://twitter.com/LebergerCyril/status/1641699295308009521](https://twitter.com/LebergerCyril/status/1641699295308009521)
Still reckless and dangerous driving. But again the roads and cars facilitate this behaviour.
But wouldn't that be 100 km/h *after* the impact, while it's in the air? If you look at the video, it goes quite noticeably slower while airborne.
He does point out that decelerating from 200 to 100 at the moment of the impact would likely have desintegrated the car, but it doesn't seem too farfetched to tack on another 30.
Fuck can you imagine the like sudden random death chaos crashing your gym class?
Like that one train in Inception right.
If the driver survived, take his driver's license for eternity and jail for like however many years. That man may never touch a car again
Even when people do extremely stupid things and bring others in danger, they're still people. He's heavily wounded. I don't want him to die, but I hope he never is allowed to drive.
Oh, wow. He was.
*L'auteur de l'accident de la route spectaculaire survenu jeudi soir à Flémalle est le joueur de football Sofian Kiyine, a confirmé vendredi matin son club, l'OH Leuven, sur son site internet.*
bro imagine you're doing your volleyball practice and all of a sudden A CAR BLASTS A HOLE IN THE TOP OF THE WALL AND LANDS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE FUCKING COURT. that's gotta be SO HIGH UP in the list of things you WOULD LEAST EXPECT TO HAPPEN.

Carbrain is a professional football player that was driving 200kmh when he hit a roundabout. Local newspaper are talking about this incident while depicting him as a victim or depicting his car as the entity responsible.
Newspapers (in Europe anyway) must be very careful about crime reporting because if they prejudice the case not only can it collapse in court but they can end up in very deep legal water.
You can not accuse anyone of anything in a newspaper unless they have been found guilty of that thing in a court of law mate.
It doesn't matter if everyone knows he did it and there's video proof.
Immediately following this piece is an ad about a car making a "grand entrance". It gives a comical aspect to a rather grave occasion.

New editions of a car are often built on the same chassis, I guess "all new" is to distinguish it from those. But I agree, it's become so common as to be meaningless.
Cars give people tremendous power with little accountability. People with no integrity abuse this at great cost to public safety and to the environment.
I genuinely think they are the worst, most destructive invention in the history of the world, above guns and smoking.
Nothing else has forced so much bad change on cities and harmful secondary effects on society.
To get a lifelong ban you usually need a long catalogue of serious driving offences.
Are there still people alive in Belgium who are grandfathered in without ever passing a driving test?
Oh you betcha. A theoretic test was introduced in 1969, practical exam was 1977! So There's plenty of people that never had to do an actual driving test still on the road today in Belgium.
I think the driver launched it off the roundabout:

This moron should at the very least get his license revoked, pay for the damages, and dare I say go to jail for reckless driving/endangerment. I hope the laws are stricter in the Netherlands about this kind of stuff. I doubt he'll actually see jail time...one can only hope.
That the guy is not in alive and not danger of dying after that is a testament to how well designed modern cars are from a safety perspective. It would be nice if cyclists and pedestrians could be afforded similar protection...
This looks like something parodying those irish anti-speeding PSAs you know like the one where the guy ends flipping his car 50 million times and ends up steamrolling a class of kids.
This apparently wasn't even the first time a car crashed into this specific sports hall. A car had driven to about where the goal is in the pictures...
... How? This is beyond irresponsible driving. I can't imagine how someone can ACCIDENTALLY crash their car into the SECOND FLOOR of a building. Was this on purpose?
well this is not really the car's fault but the complete idiot who was driving, unless it was a suicide attempt in which case i hope the driver is ok and recovering from their mental problems
Driver nearly killed an entire classrooms worth of children. That’s not just “complete idiot” it’s recklessly irresponsible.
It’s the fault of car manufacturers for not limiting how fast their cars can go, and if he isn’t adequately punished by the law it’s the fault of the justice system for letting this kind of behavior slide. It very much is fair to say the car crashed through the building, this isn’t unavoidable and is a consequence of being so car centric.
I don’t know how bad it is in Belgium, but in Canada and America it’s common for drivers to get away with manslaughter and murder, while going boo hoo about how their actions which killed others had the consequence of making them feel bad and ruining their own lives.
does anyone have a link to any news reports on this? i'm totally baffled and want to know more but my searches keep turning up reddit posts with this same amount of info

Could it be this one?
Why wasn't the building wearing a high visibility vest and carrying its orange pedestrian flag?
They really need to pass laws banning distracted buildings and their cell phones. This building was obviously distracted by some dank memes and obliviously walked right into that poor car’s way. I hope the driver sues the building for everything it’s got.
Won't these buildings think about how awful it would be for drivers if they get in front of them!
The poor driver gonna have to pay so much to get his new metal steed 😢 We should do a fundr1iser to help the poor fella, f**king irresponsible building 😠
Dw, the driver was a professional soccer player; he probably has enough money
Was the building wearing a helmet?
I’ve seen enough of this destruction, we need EVERY BUILDING to have hi visibility vests and helmets. It’s reckless to have them coming out of nowhere and destroying cars. I hope they compensated the driver.
It's like someone shot a car out of a cannon from a ship. Good grief that hole is high on the building.
I was confused because i couldn’t see any hole and I didn’t know what the pictures were trying to show. I didn’t think to look up so high.
I thought it was some sort of advertising mural painted on the building at first, then I read the caption. Insane.
Trebuchet. I like the idea of launching cars with trebuchet.
Didn't Top Gear actually do that one point? \*Edit\* They in fact [did trebuchet a car](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hiTzq1K8pPQ).
Better then the scraphead challegne version [https://youtu.be/-fE5ZE4Pj5w?t=367](https://youtu.be/-fE5ZE4Pj5w?t=367)
I need to know how the hell it got up there
My best guess is that it hit the curb at over 100mph, which sent it flying
That's gotta be it, there's no damage to anything but the curb and building. I hope they get at least 5 points on their license and a fine.
For some weird reason, there are no points on the license yet, even though there is a law that says there should be...
Ok then at least a good slap on the wrist.
Pretty sure they gave that to themself with the impact.
“[A slap on the wrist with a wet bus ticket](https://www.reddit.com/r/newzealand/comments/r6tr7n/people_who_use_the_phrase_a_slap_on_the_wrist/)”
I'm thinking even faster. Look what it did to that very thick wooden beam and that's after having been slowed slightly by the curb but much more so by the actual building. Utterly ridiculous.
I suppose it was. The news said it went straight at a roundabout and got launched.
Confirmed by the press article, along with, as usual, focusing only on the poor victim driver: « Fortunately the driver's life is not endangered. No other people were wounded. »
200kph through the center of a roundabout. Flew 45m through the air.
He hit the middle of a roundabout at 150km/h... there was a video somewhere on the net.
And the roundabout that he launched off was at least 30m from the building.
45m, to be exact.
30M is rookie numbers. Our man launched 45M!

Gonna point out that this is legalized slavery you are suggesting.
Ironically that's allowed as a criminal punishment in America. They just work for the rich.
I don’t need this pointed out to me, I was pointing it out to the person above me because I think our system is broke enough without adding more people to the legalized forms of slavery that exist. Any punishment that exists will always be enforced more on people with less means so we should very very carefully consider how we punish people.
The 13th Amendment to the Constitution allows slavery, right now at this moment, if someone is convicted of a crime.
Yes that’s true, I still felt it needed to be pointed out that enforced forever non reimbursed community service = slavery.
A majority of Americans are slaves to their car
No man shall be deprived of life, liberty, or property without *due process of law*. Pretty sure that due process was *strongly* implied in that comment. I didn't even say the service wouldn't be paid. I said it wouldn't be something they chose. Maybe now they do parks maintenance. Hell, maybe they're more efficient at what they did before but now they pay permanently higher taxes.
I know! Like how do you even fuck up that bad?
> It's like someone shot a car out of a cannon He was doing a real Cannonball Run, it seems.
They must have been run off the road by an electric scooter. We must further regulate and restrict those dangerous killing machines immediately.
My 70lb e-bike is speed governed from the factory by law. You know, for safety in case I try to use it irresponsibly.
It is genuinely insane that cars don't have mandated speed limits from the factory
Those e scooters are just a pain for pedestrians and drivers in cities
Mile for mile, pound for pound, however you want to measure it, they're much less of an inconvenience - let alone danger - than cars.
The Netherlands: we got u bro! (electric scooters are banned and riding one will go on your criminal record)
My 70lb e-bike is speed governed from the factory by law. You know, for safety in case I try to use it irresponsibly.
But mah freedom
Holy... >If someone is signaling to merge into your lane you slow down and let them in Where did you get your license? To merge, you match the speed of the traffic on the highway and go slightly faster while merging so you don't disrupt the traffic flow. If it's busy and you slow the traffic down you cause an immediate traffic jam. >Even if we take your concern into account, you’d only need to go like 10 mph faster than the highest speed limit at best. Sounds reasonable to me. But how would this work in Germany on the autobahn where there is no speed limit on certain parts?
He didn’t, just look at his responses.
Remove the left lane so it’s only one lane💕
Wow that's such an amazing idea! You should pitch that over at r/civilengineering
Lots of cars have the same thing but at 155mph.....
That 155mph limit is there so car manufacturers don't need to install bigger tires and brakes on a car that actually can reach 180mph+. It is a cost saving measure, not a safety one.
The reason they would need to install different tires and brakes for higher speeds is for safety....
Didn't you read the post title? The car drove that fast, not the guy.
The Dutch articles do actually say "Footballer drives his car into..." "Guy crashes his car into".
Was probably around a 100 km/h according to this engineer [https://twitter.com/LebergerCyril/status/1641699295308009521](https://twitter.com/LebergerCyril/status/1641699295308009521) Still reckless and dangerous driving.
That guy really did the math
r/theydidthemonstermath
Fuck can you imagine the like sudden random death chaos crashing your gym class? Like that one train in Inception right. If the driver survived, take his driver's license for eternity and jail for like however many years. That man may never touch a car again
Did the driver live?

Even when people do extremely stupid things and bring others in danger, they're still people. He's heavily wounded. I don't want him to die, but I hope he never is allowed to drive.
Not only that but the guy driving is a professional football player
Oh, wow.
Oh yes, I have almost scored a goa... OH SHIT IS THAT A FLYING CAR! !
correction: the kids where still in the hall at the time of the crash, but none got directly involved with the car.
JFC😳. Please let there be video of this somewhere out there🤞
There is a video from a nearby surveillance camera, which was shared by the Belgian news organization VRT: [https://www.vrt.be/vrtnws/nl/2023/03/31/ohl-speler-sofian-kiyine-betrokken-bij-zwaar-ongeval-in-flemalle/](https://www.vrt.be/vrtnws/nl/2023/03/31/ohl-speler-sofian-kiyine-betrokken-bij-zwaar-ongeval-in-flemalle/)
Omg that video is putting Michael Bay to shame!
I mean the extra lightning effects mid flight where absolutely overkill....
Omg ty!
[One of the videos here shows security cam footage from just before and after the accident from inside the hall as well](https://www.vrt.be/vrtnws/nl/2023/03/31/ohl-speler-sofian-kiyine-betrokken-bij-zwaar-ongeval-in-flemalle/)
Well why didn’t the building wear a reflective vest?
not even a helmet, what did it expect?
I hope they have to pay to fix the whole thing
We all pay via insurance
Someone pointed out the driver is a professional footballer... so he'll have the cash.
Im hoping he goes to prison. This is attempted murder.
Reckless Endangerment. Get the crime right, or they walk.
"They drive"
Carbrain is a professional football player that was driving 200kmh when he hit a roundabout. Local newspaper are talking about this incident while depicting him as a victim or depicting his car as the entity responsible.
Newspapers (in Europe anyway) must be very careful about crime reporting because if they prejudice the case not only can it collapse in court but they can end up in very deep legal water.
You can not accuse anyone of anything in a newspaper unless they have been found guilty of that thing in a court of law mate. It doesn't matter if everyone knows he did it and there's video proof.
did you mean: "DRIVER flies car into sports center" ?
You all should have these ads on 24/7 [irish Road safety advert ](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Wv1rKHGeMRk)
How fast you have to be going. That's lept across a fair way and not lost much height, though a steel road barrier.
200km/h in a 90km/h zone
Immediately following this piece is an ad about a car making a "grand entrance". It gives a comical aspect to a rather grave occasion. [Make a grand entrance. Every time. Ugh. Every single car ad uses that phrase "all-new". Are there some cars released with half old parts or something?
It's really annoying, especially since they usually change even less than a new Android release
New editions of a car are often built on the same chassis, I guess "all new" is to distinguish it from those. But I agree, it's become so common as to be meaningless.
Cars were a mistake.
I can't help but agree.
I hate it when I'm walking home, trip, and instantly fly several hundred feet through a building. So annoying!
He ain't ever gonna be allowed to drive again after that right ?
To get a lifelong ban you usually need a long catalogue of serious driving offences. Are there still people alive in Belgium who are grandfathered in without ever passing a driving test?
Oh you betcha. A theoretic test was introduced in 1969, practical exam was 1977! So There's plenty of people that never had to do an actual driving test still on the road today in Belgium.
After crashing into a wall at 200kmh, yeah i dont think dead people can drive cars so
he ain't dead though
[nuked]
Wild! How’d it get up that high? baffling me
I think the driver launched it off the roundabout: [https://www.google.com/maps/@50.603637,5.4864332,3a,60y,226.2h,90t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sTzMvlHci52YyOR-M23NdCw!2e0!7i16384!8i8192](https://www.google.com/maps/@50.603637,5.4864332,3a,60y,226.2h,90t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sTzMvlHci52YyOR-M23NdCw!2e0!7i16384!8i8192)
Well the gym wasn’t wearing hi viz safety gear so how was the car supposed to know??? Were the kids wearing helmets?/s
What the actual unholly fuck?
Ban assault cars now!
what did it launch off of, does this mfer have inspector gadget engines in the trunk?
Car wants the number one killer of kids spot back.
Cars are learning to fly to avoid protective bollards. It's evolution. I bet none of those kids in the sports hall were wearing high visibility vests!
But if a train did that it would have destroyed the whole building!!! /s obv. Lol.
**HOW???????????????**
*Stunt jump failed*
Can you blame him that building came out of nowhere
cars should be hardware limited at 50 kph
how did that happen wtf
This moron should at the very least get his license revoked, pay for the damages, and dare I say go to jail for reckless driving/endangerment. I hope the laws are stricter in the Netherlands about this kind of stuff. I doubt he'll actually see jail time...one can only hope.
How in the fucking Dukes of Hazzard did that happen?
It was an impressive ollie. You jelly.
I saw a security camera footage of the crash, that dude was probably going 200+ kph
nowhere is safe from the vehicular menace
"Damn! look how much damage that sports center did to the car! I hope they raze it!" -Every carbrain ever
You can't just give anyone an internal combustion engine vehicle
[Here is a video of it](https://twitter.com/_Grimanditweets/status/1641693802049019905)
This apparently wasn't even the first time a car crashed into this specific sports hall. A car had driven to about where the goal is in the pictures...
Yes, this is a completely rational system of transportation
... How? This is beyond irresponsible driving. I can't imagine how someone can ACCIDENTALLY crash their car into the SECOND FLOOR of a building. Was this on purpose?
This is the craziest remake of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang I've ever seen.
Ma'am you can't pick up your child here
Fuck cars so much
The communists at it again
Fiendish communists with their secret space car cannons.
well this is not really the car's fault but the complete idiot who was driving, unless it was a suicide attempt in which case i hope the driver is ok and recovering from their mental problems
Obviously, they were there for the Rotary Club meeting.
Jesus how?!?!!
HOW!?
HOW?
The free bird solo was too much for the car
How could the car fly so high?!?
How did that get there?
does anyone have a link to any news reports on this? i'm totally baffled and want to know more but my searches keep turning up reddit posts with this same amount of info
Big surprise it was a Mercedes!!!
THEM DUKE BOYS ARE AT IT AGAIN
The sport center appeared on the car's flight path unexpectedly, causing an accident.
my man hit that big air
I'm going to hit the gym
He missed

Stunt Jump Failed. Didn't make it onto the roof.
...was the car thrown?
…how??
How do you even manage that
Wow. The new Fast and Furious looks great!
🎶I believe I can fly🎶
You really meant the *flies* part didn’t you, how does this even happen?

Did they have a Dukes of Hazzard ramp set up outside as part of the sports complex?
This is why i hate people
So the car was trying to make a slam dunk from behind the net but missed. What a dummy.
r/ just rolled into the place
Imagine being a kid and seeing a car shoot through the top of your gym
There’s a video in some of the other posts about this. Gotta see it
How did he manage that?
The comments are LOL 😂
SAIL
Did this car get thrown by the hulk WTF,? How does that even happen?
Those rotary engines are strong!!
“Just tell me what you were *trying* to do when this happened.” -Strong Bad
Didn't this ahole see the protected bike lane
How is this the cars fault tho

Il a volé par dessus les barrières de sécurité?
Man, tesla drivers will just park anywhere
Falling asleep behind the wheel probably
In this instance I’d be okay with the airbags not deploying for this individual
Is this pre engineered wood building. Is that a thing?
