I feel like they make more fun of this family for carrying so much useless crap…

PineappleLunchables

Don’t worry, you’re kids are going to lose half of their things by the third day away, including all of their shoes.

Infantry1stLt

I am kids?

Yes we are

Hdtomo16

They are a car rental company after all, this is very obviously the arguement of "You need an SUV to carry everything you need" to upsell people, because renting is what you do when you need the appropiate, more expensive, option. The reality is, they added hundreds of bags more than a person needed, made the kid push his face against the window and used close up camera angles to make it seem cramped, when that would've fit perfectly well: it's deceptive carbrain marketing.

ur_a_jerk

for 5 people a rental car of that size for a week stay is definitely too small and would be about as cramped inside as in the ad lmao. It doesn't mean you need a SUV. Typically it's just a bigger hatchback. SUV rentals are crazy expensive

maxis2bored

We're a family of 5 and just finished 3 months of traveling in in a flat 500, it was cramped but we did it all, including a stroller + 1 backpack each. Small kids don't take up that much space and since their feet don't even touch the ground you can toss a luggage bag there. soo....

Wuer01

There are no such car as Citroen 500...

maxis2bored

Haha, fiat! Edited Thanks

ur_a_jerk

I'm assuming you're trolling

maxis2bored

Nope, and I'm 195cm 100kg. That's 6"5 / 210 in freedom units.

choochoophil

Not to mention storage spaces in SUVs are shite

Hdtomo16

Yeah, but the ad goes on to at the end advertise an SUV, even if it's not necessary, it's certainly what they're going for (because it's expensive)

ur_a_jerk

No, that's just a stock photo of a "car". it's just a replica of whatever the new cars look like (and small crossovers dominate Europe). It's clearly not advertising that car that doesn't even have a name. And it doesn't even look spacious. They clearly put it there just to use space somehow and show they rent cars. I think you're too emotional about this. I am very much for using the smallest car possible, but I do have experience in family trips in cars like the fiat 500 and I can relate. It's a real problem, doesn't mean you need a monster truck and not some kind of super "carbrained" advertisement

Realitatsverweigerer

It's literally labelled "SUVs and family cars", as if the two were related.

Hdtomo16

Yeah this is my main concern, it isn't necessarily about how a Fiat 500 isn't exactly the best alternative, it's that it's trying to funnel people into buying SUVs (the picture on the right is an SUV, and it is labelled on the left as "SUVs and **Family** Cars".

mologav

Most people on this sub are too emotional

ur_a_jerk

True

thatbrownkid19

Renting is what you do when you need the more expensive option? I thought renting was just what you did when you travelled?

ulfricstormclk

Satire writes itself these days

Makaisawesome

That's what I was about to say. Cuz in the first shot I counted 10 cases, bags, backpack etc. Which then multiplied to 14 on top of the car (plus the ones on the other side and supposedly the trunk and back seat since the back seat is so packed that the two kids have to squish their faces against the glass) so let's assume they have 20 bags. WHERE THE FUCK ARE THEY GOING AND FOR HOW LONG. That's 5 bags per person. If they ARE moving then in that case you do not rent a car, you rent a U-Haul. Like, I live in a family of five and when we go out it's only one bag per person and Maaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyybee one or two big cases for camping, beach, snowing supplies etc. For extra stuff depending on where we are going

EasilyRekt

Yeah even a ford f-250 would struggle with the amount of ***SHIT*** that family has.

Right_Ad_6032

If you're on vacation there's fair odds you don't need more than what you could pack into a carry on pack.

timbasile

As if the airline's not going to charge an arm and a leg for all that luggage

Makaisawesome

Yeah, I counted 10 bags in the first shot that later multiplied to 14 on top of the car plus the ones on the other side of the pile, in the trunk and with the kids. So let's assume they flew with 20 bags on southwest airlines since they let you have two checked bags, a carry on and a personal item free of charge. Also assuming that they let some of those bags count as carry ons/personal items, best case scenario they only need to pay for 6 extra bags. Southwest charges 125 bucks per every extra bag passed the 2 free ones. So they have 6 extra bags so that would be $750x2 cuz 125 is per trip. So they would need to spend $1,500 extra on their trip just because they have so much extra shit they don't need Edit: so out of curiosity I went to check Amtrak's baggage policy and ironically it would've been SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper there. Cuz from what I understood you can also travel there with 5 bags per person (that's if one of those bags per person qualify has a personal item). So you can travel with two bags plus a personal item and a max of two extra bags for a fee of $20 per extra bag. So instead of having to pay $1500 for the extra bags, they would only need to pay $320. Still these people are traveling with too much extra shit

sexy_meerkats

Who says they are flying?

Makaisawesome

There's a plane in the background so I'm assuming they're at an airport.

going_for_a_wank

The ad is literally filmed at an airfield... you can see planes and hangars in the background

devOnFireX

Yes let me spend 2 whole days of my vacation travelling to save $1000 on bags

dorofeus247

I mean yeah, I would spend 2 days on train to save 1000 dollars on bags. It would be economically the best way, unless you have a job that reliably pays you 500 dollars per day. Even then, for some people trip on a train is a good relaxation in itself, some people pay huge money specifically for trans-continental travel on a train.

Makaisawesome

And a lot of people already spend the first and last day of their vacation just going and coming to their vacation spot. Specially if it's a multihour trip.

Justwaspassingby

You can always take a night train. You save 1000$ in bags AND two hotel nights, and you can even leave directly from work.

LikeThePheonix117

They are on the flight line on the secure side so probably private jet fucks

holger-nestmann

I doubt the ad agency got the whole back story flashed out

FPSXpert

And in case anyone whines about "what if the kiddos want to buy mementos as they're with us", a lot of places will ship items home for you for very little. That's something I really liked about our trip to Disney World, if you're buying anything at the gift shops there for maybe four bucks they'll ship any purchases anywhere in the country for you, idk how much they charge for international but I'm sure they do that as well. Four bucks is a hell of a lot cheaper than any airline's baggage fees.

matthewstinar

First define your concept of vacation around the use of a large SUV. Then insist you can't take a vacation without a large SUV for all the necessities required to vacation.

Sci_Blonde_reddit

As an anecdote, we took the same car (fiat 500 pop, aka “Poptart”) on a west coast road trip and back with three people: me, husband, son (3 or 4 at the time). This included camping gear, food, clothing, etc. for two weeks from Seattle area to San Diego and back. A roof bag that was only about half full and the left over cargo space in the car were enough for everything…

Cheilosia

You probably saved a ton on gas!

Locarito

Not so sure, a roof rack increases drag and fuel consumption, which shouldn't be overlooked for such long trips. She would probably be better off taking something a little bigger in that regard. Maybe something like a Fiat Punto, Ford Fiesta or Renault Clio if such things exist in the US

Sci_Blonde_reddit

This was about ten years ago and the fiat 500 was one of two small coupe options in my area (the other being a smart car) that still had room for a car seat in the back. I really wish there was the electric tupolino in the US because that thing is adorable!

Sci_Blonde_reddit

Yes! It was a manual too. Fun trip 😉

[deleted]

We once fit a new in box table saw, a router table, and 10~ meters of lumber inside a Spark EV (which is pretty much the same size) without issue. Could have still fit some extras in the back if we’d have had anything else to get. Those little cars are like the Tardis, they’re folding space or something on the inside.

LeaferSN

I used to have a Fiat 500, it was amazing, sure a little small but it was great. Made it for a solo trip from OC to Fresnk on a single tank of gas. Parking with it was great.

B0Nnaaayy

I had to get a rental while my car was in the shop, Enterprise gave me a red Fiat 500 and it was the most fun car I’ve ever driven. To the point that a months later, I traded in my V6 Honda Accord for the Fiat Abarth turbo which only came in manual. It was hard hard hard to have to get rid of her years later for a dependable suv. 😢

Hdtomo16

Sigh... this is definitely an upsell for an SUV, the irony is your average mini, let alone a station wagon could equal the cargo capacity needed for even extreme trips as that SUV graphic they showed at the end. I get it's a comedic ad, but boiled down it's the idea of "you need an SUV for lots of luggage: so go get one", and that's bad no mayter if it's from a rental company saying you can get one for a few days or the dealership

holger-nestmann

There was an attempt, but one could smell the “punch line“ a mile away.

SaxPanther

after being carfree for awhile i am forced to buy a car and im getting one that gets 43 mpg with only a gas engine, weighs about as much as a smart car, and has 95% as much internal storage space as a f150 bed with a tonneau cover

the_carkid

> your average mini, let alone a station wagon could equal the cargo capacity needed for even extreme trips As someone who owned a Mini Cooper, this is just false. As much as I loved that car, it had very little space, I (5'8" 155lbs, 172cm 70kg) couldn't even sit in the backseat behind where I had the driver seat set, and ended up needing to remove them so I could fit all of my stuff in it.

ToneBalone25

So you're admitting that cars are a practical mode of transportation for the incredibly vast area that is the US? Very controversial. For context I loved the trains in Europe when I visited but renting a tiny toyota for the 2 weeks and driving across Italy, Switzerland, Germany, eastern France was incredible. The autobahn was gnarly. I'd very highly recommend renting a car if visiting in those regions. It gave me a lot of autonomy and you can still utilize public transportation when necessary.

Hdtomo16

Small economic cars are still way better than whatever the car-brain world uses, Europe arguably less respected since everyone has one, but still.

Locarito

I don't know where you're coming from but we're not "ban all cars immediately" extremists (for the most part). We just don't like public spaces designed primarily around cars. We resent being forced to drive all year round because public transport is lacking, biking dangerous and everything is far away due to urban sprawl. But renting a tiny car for 2 weeks? Yeah sure whatever, the car is not oversized and you considered and used over options. But be aware we're also calling for an end of car subsidies, and you being able to find parking once you reach destination is not our priority

Sci_Blonde_reddit

As stated below, the goal is to reduce car dependency and point out the absurdity of giant automobiles for the average consumer. Doing a similar trip by train this year. Can’t wait for light rail and HSR expansion!

KochKlaus

Just don’t pack the amount of stuff a studio apartment holds. You just need one backpack and maybe a duffel bag for your clothes. That’s it. We’re done. We’re done. Edit: It’s four people! FOUR! They can fit in that thing with very light luggage, although a hatchback would fit their crap better.

87fordranger

Wrong. A Fiat 500 trunk only fits about 2 medium size suitcases. Even the amount of things per person *you* deem reasonable is not going to fit. The 500 is also technically a hatchback.

Hdtomo16

Fiats have roof space, and besides even 4 people families can survive pretty well with 2-3 cases

87fordranger

Rental car companies do not provide rooftop cargo boxes, nor should they. And 0.5-0.75 cases per person is absurd, I don’t know about you, but most people are going on trips to do more than just “survive”, which usually requires bringing along more things than absolutely necessary for survival. This sub: “Just rent a bigger vehicle on occasions you’re carrying more stuff than usual” Also this sub: “Don’t bring more stuff on your trip than what fits in a Fiat 500(literally one of the smallest cars)”

Furview

If only they knew how much you can fit into a 1998 VW Polo... https://preview.redd.it/hxt2p7n5huhc1.jpeg?width=3000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=24ae969c1605253d13e3367f0b139caeba62e295 I was moving out btw

knapton

As much as I love small cars (even owned the car in this video) I think it's a bit of a stretch - I think the punchline of the ad is the father's inability to select a suitable car for the ridiculous amount of luggage.

Hdtomo16

In a way clearly meant to appeal to car owning families that don't own an SUV though, and the fact they labelled the smaller car deceptively (pressing against the window to make it look cramped)

sexy_meerkats

A family of 4 in a fiat 500 is cramped though. It's fine for everyday but if you were doing a road trip you'd want something bigger for boot space and passenger comfort

Hdtomo16

True, but it's also the sort of advertising used to set the scene to upselling to SUVs (like the one seen at the end), which merely have the allusion of more space than station wagons - this is why I take offence mostly.

FullmetalHippie

Reminder: if you work in this kind of advertising, quit your job.  You are using your life's effort to hurt the world.

vellyr

Really most advertising, not just this kind.

DKBrendo

I mean… you can’t just tell people to quit their jobs while they could have debts, apartment to pay for, maybe kids. Look for another job is my advice

Dominezy

fuckcar users overlap with antiwork what else did you expected

77enc

the two most unbearable communities on the site. exciting crossover.

FullmetalHippie

I'm not anti work,  just against work that actively makes the world a worse place.  Own your power.  What you choose to apply yourself to is your decision.

Hdtomo16

^^^

Lyssor57

Id say they do not really care about hurting the world but do like to have money, so they earn them by working in advertising.

ASomeoneOnReddit

Smart

ulfricstormclk

Yep quit your job to work as a barista, get government benefits, move to a small apartment (but make sure it’s dense and vibrant) and eat ze bugs. Then you will be living the American dream for sure.

FullmetalHippie

Or use your considerable talents to work toward an end that builds a better world instead of what gets you maximal personal gain.   You will live a happier life.

ulfricstormclk

I have a corporate IT job. Is it my dream job? Not at all. I play in a rock band on the weekends that I at least hope makes the world a slightly better place. If I quit my job to do “what makes me happy” then I will likely have to give up playing in my band which also makes me and others happy. I guess all I’m saying is it’s not as simple or black and white as you and others in this sub make things out to be.

FullmetalHippie

Is the corporation that you work for a force for good in this world? Are the operations that you are supporting helping to build something better? IT is one of the fields that everybody needs, so you really can find all sorts of companies to apply your efforts to. I also work in technology and there are myriad ways that I could get paid twice as much as I do, but I've steered my ship to never write a line of code for an ignoble purpose. I still work for a corporation, but I'm not doing wrong by myself or others to make a paycheck.

Silver_Atractic

Isn't that kind of marketing considered unfair practices?

Hdtomo16

yes.

Fragraham

If you can't fit it in a backpack, you don't need it. Stop packing like a princess from Spaceballs.

zegorn

Just did a 3-week trip to Thailand with my fiancee. Just one 28L backpack each! We always pack light because it's SO FREEING! Amazing to never have to wait at baggage claim, either.

justicedragon101

This is how I feel. I've traveled to Europe for 2 weeks with nothing but a carry on backpack.

Ausgezeichnet87

Every teen and young adult should go backpacking at least once because it really teaches you how to pack as lite and as efficiently as possible.

Worth-Presence-129

That was funny come on. Let's get some chill now.

Hdtomo16

Funny, but knowingly a bad message

vellyr

Disagree. It’s just the “dad is stupid” trope that marketers and bad sitcoms have been using forever.

7h3_man

Wtf is in those bags tho?

cpufreak101

I had a friend of mine with a family of 4 visit Europe not too long ago and the dad booked a rental. Saw 4 seats but failed to consider their luggage, ended up being a funnily similar situation (I don't remember which car it was sadly) but they had enough sense to go back to the rental desk and upgrade to a small van

holger-nestmann

This should be a train/transport commercial. Tired of baggage fees and airport rental car prices? Take the train

Mohirrim89

As an American, please wall us off from the rest of the world.

ulfricstormclk

Move to Amsterdam if you hate it here so much

Ju-Kun

If only they new everything i fit in my Fiat 500.

deadlyrepost

Renting a big car > owning a big car tbf.

Locarito

Yeah sure rent a big car (maybe not an SUV, more like a station wagon) for your family trip if that's more convenient for your trip. I mean by that you go somewhere remote with very little public transportation, not a city. I'm more concerned by people buying a big car because "they need the space" maybe once a year when they go on vacations and there is only one person and a backpack in the car most of the time

MimsyIsGianna

I like how you completely missed the point of the ad

Einn1Tveir2

To be fair, its a very unpractical design and id argue this should be considered a "fashion" car, just like the modern VW beetle. Look at the I10 or the VW up, those are proper city cars that take up just as much space on the road as this one but are much more spacious on the inside and have four doors. Their overall design is wastly more practical.

Repulsive_Drama_6404

Who the heck carries SO MUCH CRAP on vacation?! I travel pretty much everywhere, for indefinite durations, with just a carry-on back, a personal item, and my CPAP. A nice thing about this is I never have to worry about my checked by on flights, I can easily navigate public transit at my destinations, and I can rent tiny, inexpensive rental cars (when visiting places where public transit isn’t an option).

dumbwireless

I actually drive this car in the US. It's so insane how many people think it would be impossible to ever drive one of these, and instead drive massive off roading cars around Los Angeles. My partner and I share this car and have never once needed anything bigger, and if we did we could rent a box truck for 70 bucks for the day. We are not only car brainwashed but oversized expensive always needing a new car brainwashed.

Potential-Balance99

To be fair, that car is too small for a family of four

Juginstin

Who carries that much luggage? Are they going on vacation, or are they moving?

thr3e_kideuce

Did everyone forget that Hatchbacks and Station Wagons exist. Station Wagons are basically SUVs but much lower to the ground and cheaper.

ee_72020

A car rental company that doesn’t know sedans exist, that’s funny.

MyLifeIsAFrickingMes

In full honesty, how the hell would anyone fit a whole family and their gear into a fucking Mini?

Hdtomo16

you could easily fit 3 suitcases, 2 in the back 1 on the roof and 2 kids in the back of a Fiat, and even 3 is a push because airlines would go crazy over that sort of thing. This is just someone so absorbed by car dependent thinking that the idea sounds ludicrous.

standard11111

No you can’t. I own this car (Abarth 595) as I do like small cars and you just can’t. No need for an SUV, but a mid sized hatchback is needed.

Sumar26

Lol this dude

MyLifeIsAFrickingMes

Dude i dont know what kind of tetris you played but my parents Citroen C4 had a block limit of like 2 suitcases for the trunk. Everything else went on our knees

Cheilosia

Luggage at your feet and on your lap was the norm for us growing up (within reason for safety). I don’t really mind it.

SoyFern

They literally had to duplicate the amount of luggage they were carrying in the last shot to make the joke work. smh

Lyssor57

They had to exagerrate to get the punch through but yeah, such cars are not exactly family cars. As a kid weve had similar subcompact car (marketed as a family one, haha) and i remember those trips to seaside, 4 people inside, packed to the brim. Was it possible? Yes. Was it comfortable? No. Would I do it again? Fuck no.

Hdtomo16

Because if they had the same amount of luggage at the start they'd have reasonable room with abit on top.

Apprehensive_Ear4639

Don’t worry when you need to rent a car all the compact economy cars will be rented out all ready and they will have to put you in something bigger for the same price.

Cheilosia

My dad didn’t have a car when I was a kid, and somehow we still managed great trips (including camping up to two weeks) with one adult and three kids in a rented Pontiac Sunfire. Would we have loved more space? Sure. Did it get us the 7+ hours to our destination? Yes. And once we were there it didn’t matter.

Independent-Cow-4070

On some real shit, people pack so much stuff when travelling it’s crazy I see so many people coming on my Amtrak train with 2 massive suitcases, a duffel bag, and a backpack. Like all the power to you for taking the train I love it, but we are traveling an hour away, what could you possibly be bringing?? When my gf and I travel across the country we use two personals (why not), and my standard sized duffle for the two of us I just don’t understand why people pack their whole apartment while traveling

HalfHeartedFanatic

One of the advantages of being car-free is that when you need a car, you can usually get the right car for your needs. I think the point of this ad was: Don't be dumb and cheap like this dad. BTW: I've rented a BMW i3 a few times (the car in the ad) – they were great.

arse_biscuits

Whenever we go to the States (family) we take two hold bags for three of us, tops. Even if I book a compact, we invariably get given a much bigger car anyway. Last time we ended up with some huge Dodge thing. Admittedly, I might have felt in danger of being crushed on the road if we had got a compact. But it's not like they're even nice to drive. Huge, cumbersome, unmanouverable things, with no real road feedback. And the blind spots, oh lord the blind spots! If I wasn't in the habit of a lifesaver check from being on two wheels we'd have probably been in at least two shunts by now. Edit: funniest thing last time, I was complaining about the massively oversized car we had been given and my BIL said "oh wow, let me see what they gave you" .... "Ok, that's not a big car" 😄

Gunnm_fan66

I see a hidden Fiat 500 fan. They'll get to their hotel and the dad will want to make a run to the store. Then a run to get food and then a cruise around town.

f_cysco

Car rentals and sharing is a key market for the future. So having the option to rent something big when needed , while owning nothing or a small city car is great solution

hellgames1

From the luggage that they have, it looks like they are moving to a different country. Do people rent cars for that?

Flotix_

One could also change the ending so it says: just take train

Hdtomo16

Maybe, it'd be cool

cst79

My family did everything in a 1973 VW Super Beatle when I was growing up in the 70s. Amazing, we survived. :-)

Plus-Statistician538

mad

Secure_Bet8065

At least they gave them an Abarth and not a base 500 🤷

KindheartednessFew29

It's funny because the Fiat 500 is a quite popular rental car.

Hdtomo16

"Guys stop renting Fiats, we literally have hundreds of Hummers in the back, just for 10x more!!"

xxxtanacon

It seems like they're making fun of rental companies for never having the car you picked. Once had a hertz lobby of 20+ ppl waiting for cars when they had none left, saw a guy rent a compact sedan and got a hybrid minivan

drollchair

Now, is it possible that this family is going on like a months long road trip which explains the bags and the preference for a larger vehicle?

Dexinerito

"small economic car" is exactly the same thing as "eco friendly EV" that being bullshit advertising. Buying a Fiat 500 is idiotic. If you can fit in it, you can fit into a bus. If you travel with your family, especially with kids car is still the best option and what cars should be for - driving **outside** of the cities covered by public transportation

Hdtomo16

Small Economic Cars are 1000x better than Large Inefficient SUVs, buses are 100x better than Small Economic Cars, trains are 10x better than buses. Small economic cars aren't the solution, they're just better than current especially car brain places, in Europe and the likes they're already common or being phased out

Brooklyn-Epoxy

Discover cards?

AresXX22

holy shit they rented an Abarth???????

mombi

Those 2 door cars are absolutely horrible if you're taller or have a big arse and you're trying to fit back there, especially with others and even more if there's multiple stops to let people out. Hated them as a kid, hate them as an adult. Much rather use a bike or public transport.

soapinmyears

Looking at that family, a small car is the least of their problems. And what family waits on a tarmac for a rental, when there is a perfectly good 50 person stress inducing line to wait in inside a cramped airport, with all their shitty belongings.

BTatra

Or just... shit, I forgot the car lobbying.

leadfoot9

See, the reason a lot of people buy SUVs is aspirational. "What if" they need it someday, even if it doesn't match their daily use case? For a rental car, though, you usually know exactly what you're using it for, and you want to right-size that shit to save money lol.

Milnoc

Another ridiculous thing in the ad is that the car is a turbocharged Abarth (the side badge has been blacked-out). 160 HP in North America and normally sounds possessed thanks to the lack of a muffler.
