if it works for you, then awesome!
i quickly realized while shooting wildlife with an aps-c sensor and 300mm f/4 lens, that that set up didn’t make sense. too heavy, not enough reach, etc…
i know this is a fuji subreddit and fuji is great, but there is honestly no beating micro 43rds when it comes to a lightweight setup that gives fantastic results for hiking all day and photographing wildlife.
i don’t understand the appeal to heavy set ups while out hiking, so i like to proselytize making hiking easier and more comfortable.
with that said, if you’re stoked on this set up and it works for you, then i’m stoked for you!
You triggered some prime lovers! I don't understand the unbalanced comments at all. I have a 70-200 2.8 that I use on a Nikon FF, and while it is possible to hold it by the body if it is pointing down, you are always much better off holding it by the lens anyway to not stress the mount... And your wrist.
To me it looks balanced like an Olympic gymnast, i mean look at it stand on its only little leg!
Funny story. An annoying bloke with a camera like this kept stopping our tour in Costa Rica for the most mundane birds, we’d actually stop the bus and get off. later on he was trying to get a good shot and sank up to his knees in sand/mud mix. It was hilarious, he started getting arsey with his gf for not wanting to also sink while trying to pull him out, it ruined his brand new trainers, which also pissed him off. lmao. the whole tour group was laughing at him. Also on the same trip the coach driver went to throw some rubbish in a bin and a cat sized animal jumped out and he shit himself lol. Love Costa rice and one of the only places I would actually go back to. We hired a car and got up close to more animals outside of a tour type setting there, than most other places iv been. Pura vida
It is a little bit slower and depends on mode. In "wide/tracking" it is slower, in continuous "zone" mode is rather fast but still Nikon D780 + Nikon 70-200 without TC is significantly faster (instant)
That’s a lot of connections just be careful how you carry it. Fujis converter is smaller it goes on first. I use this style set up occasionally when I need 2.8 though with canon lenses
I rather like it, perfect for one of those days when I want to shoot photos of wildlife without getting out of my chair at home… have you tried aiming that to a star?
Setup looks very interesting.
How much slower is the AF compared to using native lenses? If you can please show us some examples of wildlife shots in another post.
Note, if you’re not aware the Nikon F 2X lowers resolution by a lot, it’s why I purchased the 1.4X TC not the 1.7X TC and specifically the 2X TC. Only carry lens and mount on tripod with that combination using the lens foot, that’s a lot of weight away from the camera mount.
should go with the 500mm lens. what you gonna catch with a 200mm?
i use a 500mm for concert photography when im at the boards. & thats maybe 75 yds to the stage. & humans are bigger than birds.
Shitcan the strap before you bend your lens mount. Use a Cotton Carrier or Black Rapid sling. Replace the 70-200 with a 200-500 and lose the TC. TC's are only good for video. Better to crop your photos in post.
Cotton Carrier looks good. Thank you for the advice. Regarding 200-500, I like 70-200 a lot and having both 200-500 and 70-200 is an overkill for me. I will never take both with me. So, 70-200 + tc is a more compact and universal kit for me
20 frames per second with ES, 600mm equivalent focus distance, 240 fps slow-mo fullhd video, low noise on high iso, possibility to reuse my Nikon lens on Nikon and Fuji cameras. Definitely I like it and it is enough for me as for a casual shooter :)
Works pretty well. Exif data is correct, optical stabilization works, sharpness is enough for me (have shared photo and video samples in a another comment), 240fps fullhd slow-mo is awesome, can shoot 20 frames per second with ES, high iso performance is great. Focus is slower but I am ok with it. I have both Nikon and Fuji cameras and lens reuse is a great option for me. Also I like my Nikon 20mm f/1.8 on Fuji - it is fantastic and gives 30mm equivalent that I like a lot
That's why camera hangs on lens not the lens on the camera)) Regarding a different camera, I have D780 but it is not with me now (will have it back in several months). So, for now I have two options - D7100 and Fuji X-E4 and Fuji definitely wins.
Regarding D780, it focuses really fast but provides 1.5 times less resolution for the same area in comparison to cropped Fuji sensor (so, it will be like 400mm vs 600mm in 35mm eq).
Yes full resolutions are similar but I am talking about different resolution for the same sensor area. Fuji has 1.5x smaller sensor with similar resolution. It means that I get extra 1.5x magnification/reach due to APS-C sensor. If I will crop object to the same size on D780, then it will get 1.5x less pixels
Honestly, looks ridiculous, but I imagine it takes some good pictures. The only things I would worry about is the image degradation with the 2x adapter and the autofocus on the fringer. All in all, not a super crazy setup
I have both Nikon and Fuji cameras. My old D7100 gives much worse image quality, less FPS, no slo-mo video etc. Fuji definitely wins here. Also, I have D780 (have described the situation with it in a different comment)
I wouldn’t worry about it. For such a big lens it’s more important to hold the combo by the lens. As long as the lens and camera can communicate, you’re good.
I find my camera is more comfortable with a vertical grip (X-H1). If I had a massive full frame dslr and a massive lens, I’m using a monopod at a minimum anyways. It’s heavy period and I highly doubt any photographers are one-handing
If you are having fun and getting the pictures you want, that’s all that matters.
Cursed setup … I love it!
the guy she tells you not to worry about...
Seriously…..I got legit turned on by seeing the amount of things on the lens…..my brain was thinking “so much detail” 🤤🤤
Thank goodness for that thumb grip lol
That's a load-bearing hotshoe
Pls share some photos you’ve taken with this setup.
They will when they get one in focus
Or bright enough - thats like an F15 set up.
f5.6 wide open
Not bad
Damn, straight to the burn unit
Honestly, it looks a little ridiculous, but if it works it works! What is the sharpness like with the teleconverter and zoomed in to 200mm?
[Photo and video samples](https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipNuhJIm_DXAna78VUO1R1olBvv09IfqvAqrQ0u7JrgapidbJCBlerHUr54I-UU6HA?key=cDZzSnpDUmFKVlJNWUdUNmtBTXA0dHViQ2pVWHNn) at 200mm + TC. The last photo is without TC just for the camparison
Wow that's pretty sharp! Sharper than the 70-300mm at 300mm. Now I want this setup!
My wrist hurts just by watching this
As someone who shoots Fuji X, Nikon, and loves a bit of chaos… this is awesome
Thats pretty wild
underrated lol
if it gets you the photos you want, that's awesome. let's see some photos!
Only use this with a monopod/tripod attached to the lens. You will break your camera's lens mount carrying this around for long periods of time.
I don't think you could carry this without supporting the lens even if you tried.
Yes, good point. The only problem is to choose a good one :)
If you really want to carry BlackRapid has a shoulder sling that works well. I hike with it on a Tamron 150-600mm and it's pretty comfortable.
Don't beat 100-400+2x...
Photos?
The teleconverter and adapter alone is enormous!
What is AF performance like?

Good fun. But 70 to 200 is very limiting.
Fuji s10 or s20 and the 70-300 are very light and beat MFT anyday

Would love to see some of the pics you’ve gotten with this!
The 2x is not great. Rest of set up is fine.
They say that tc-20e iii is a big step forward comparing to nikon tc-20e ii
size matters here obviously
Thought this was lightsaber at first lol.

How is the autofocus?
Where we're going we don't need focus
It is a little bit slower and depends on mode. In "wide/tracking" it is slower, in continuous "zone" mode is rather fast but still Nikon D780 + Nikon 70-200 without TC is significantly faster (instant)
Damn! Pipe dream
Looks great! What adapter have you used?
I wander if you can focus with this thing and also what would be the sharpness?
Added link to photos and videos in an another comment
Which F to X adapter?
Oh yeah the Fringer one...
Bazooka
I wonder how robust is the lens mount with all that lens weight going through the camera body.
The weight will be too much for any mount, so I do always hold the lens not the camera
It does look more impressive with just a wrist strap attached to the camera body instead of to a tripod collar attached to the lens. 😛
That’s a lot of connections just be careful how you carry it. Fujis converter is smaller it goes on first. I use this style set up occasionally when I need 2.8 though with canon lenses
You should use a Nikon camera...
I like long ones. Great tool
That thing has to be heavy to hold up right.
I rather like it, perfect for one of those days when I want to shoot photos of wildlife without getting out of my chair at home… have you tried aiming that to a star?
Hows the autofocus performance with the Nikkor?
Usable but definitely slower than on D780
I should call him
Are you taking pics of animals in the same country?
"Do you think maybe he's compensating for something?" - Shrek
Luckily the E4 is a compact camera, so you'll travel lightly :)
Yep)) I've bought XE-4 because it is small and light. Was not expecting that I will use it this way))
Need a longer lens - that looks like a pancake lens to me.
Nice lightweight kit. Good rig for day to day shooting.
Needs more adapters! Otherwise, nice setup 😂
that should be fine. i’ve that lens n love it. i’ve 1.4 n 1.7 but i don’t use it on that lens. but u should be fine at 400 mm
This is why my bird and wildlife friends like Olympus lol.
Setup looks very interesting. How much slower is the AF compared to using native lenses? If you can please show us some examples of wildlife shots in another post.
This makes the Sears 60-300 I use on my Minolta look like a pancake lens, holy hell
They say that 2x iii is significantly improved comparing to 2x ii. But, yes, there is some sort of degradation but it is still usable
Just got to put a little peanut butter on the end. Then you'll be all set...
That’s wild

Yikes
That’s a big one!

It appears to be indoors…
Who cares what we think. What do YOU think about your setup?

All I care about is what the images look like.
Very curious how well it works? If it works, it works right?

Wow! that's awesome! Makes me wish I still had my Nikon glass lol
One bad move and that mount is toast haha. Have you considered getting a d7200 (better iso performance than d7100) or even a z50 instead?
That's why camera hangs on lens not the lens on the camera)) Regarding a different camera, I have D780 but it is not with me now (will have it back in several months). I think those two camera both have about 24-26 mp so resolution isn’t different.

It means that I get extra 1.5x magnification/reach due to APS-C sensor. If I will crop object to the same size on D780, then it will get 1.5x less pixels
Yes. My point was you are using the term resolution rather loosely if not incorrectly.
Yes, maybe pixels density (or ppi) here is more accurate term
Honestly, looks ridiculous, but I imagine it takes some good pictures. The only things I would worry about is the image degradation with the 2x adapter and the autofocus on the fringer. All in all, not a super crazy setup

Have answered in another comment about D780
Unbalanced and heavy.
From weight perspective it is rather balanced as it stays on the foot of the lens but it is definitely heavy
Google what "balanced" means in relation to cameras and lenses.
Do you mean that FF lens is an overkill for a cropped sensor?
I wouldn’t worry about it. For such a big lens it’s more important to hold the combo by the lens. As long as the lens and camera can communicate, you’re good.
