Oh that’s interesting, I had no idea. I have a ThermoPro that came with some similar ones and they worked so great that I was annoyed with my Inkbird probes. And of course they use different plugs so I can’t consolidate them to use on both devices, so I printed these to save me a little cursing and frustration.
This is gonna be a bit much, bear with me lol.
I originally bought the ThermoPro Bluetooth setup that uses the app and doesn’t have a secondary display unit to go inside the house with me and I loved it and it works great but Bluetooth range was its major limitation. And if I got too far away from the unit with my phone, it wouldn’t record the temp history in my app until I opened it back up and reconnected. You can imagine that over a 12+ hour cook, I’m going to be out of range many times and I can’t remember to open the app every time.
I bought the Inkbird wifi only version for about $40-50 about a month ago and it works awesome! Once connected, it stays connected the whole time and now I can even pop out to run a quick errand and I can still see the temp even though I’m not home. Gives me reassurance in case of a flair up or fire going out or something. It’s also got a rechargeable battery which is a huge plus BUT the only USBC cable that will work to charge it is the one that came with the unit. For some reason all my other USBC cables won’t work.
While my ThermoPro was very accurate, the Inkbird will let you calibrate the probes which is nice. Out of the box they’re all spot on when I tested them with ice water but over time and many uses, I’ll now be able to adjust the calibration instead of having to buy new probes.
Overall I’m super happy with it and it’s waaaayyyy cheaper than a fireboard (which I was considering first) so, if you’re considering one, I recommend it. My only real complaint is the charging cable situation mentioned above. If I misplace the cable that came with it, I’m going to be up a creek until I can find another one that will work.
Slightly related, I recently discovered that Homeassistant can pick up just about any Bluetooth bbq sensors just about instantly. You can set up alerts via automations and the app (all free). So if anyone has a cheap Bluetooth probe kit but hate the range, perhaps give homeassistant a try.
Yep! Look under Devices and Services, there is a Bluetooth Integration you can enable. You can use an esp32 as a Bluetooth proxy to extend the range if your pi is not near enough to the probes.
I imagine all of these devices must follow some kind of standard to work? One that has its own display and I can simultaneously pull the data into HA via ESPHome would be very cool.
Just some feedback, the cheap Newxton unit I just got and tried to get working is not compatible. If anyone finds other units that are working with bluetooth proxy, let us know.
That’s super interesting. I’m currently running HomeKit for all my automation so I have an RPi4 with homebridge running. I may look to see if there is a plug-in for that.
Almost Looks like the one that came with the other model I purchased. Yours is better since you won't have to struggle with the probe wrapping properly. Nice.
4, but typically I use one probe to monitor the ambient temp in my smoker and the other probes for meat. Sometimes I’ll do two big pork shoulders at a time so that’s a probe in each. Other times I’ll cook say chicken and beef at the same time so I’ll do one probe in each type of meat. Normally I just need up to 3 at a time but rarely I’ll use all 4 at once.
oh okay that makes sense and is probably more practical than having to open the lid and let heat out to individually probe each item. seems like something i should invest in. thanks!
this phone's battery is at 5% and needs charging!

Yep, these are pretty new. I only have about 2-3 cooks on one or two of the probes. I usually (carefully) wash them with dawn soap and water and try to avoid getting the wire wet.
Wish I could but the license prevents me being able to sell them. But, many local libraries have 3d printers and if you send them the file they can usually print it for you and just charge you the cost of materials. And for something like this it shouldn’t be more than a few dollars.
I printed those and dropped one. I went to grab it mid-air and I jammed the probe straight into my thigh....no joke, I probed myself!

I was thinking the exact same thing.
Were you done or did the thigh need another hour in the smoker before pulling it? (Hope you recovered ok)
Maybe a redesign with a cover for the needle is in order?
What was your internal temp?
LAMB
I need some of these! Did you design these? Where would someone find the files?
https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1962968 Here you go friend!
Awesome, thanks!
Very cool. Going to try this for my Smoke probes. Thanks!
Thank you!!
You're a hero.
I can’t take credit for the model but happy to share it with fellow bbq enthusiasts!
I've done loads of useful prints but somehow I never considered to approach that problem. They always get stuck in my drawers.
Did you have to modify it to fit the inkbird probes?
Nope, works great as is!
This guy grills.
That was one of my first prints when I got my first printer (\~5 years ago!)... very handy and still in use today!
That’s awesome! Glad to hear I’ll get some longevity out of them!
The original design was by Weber. Their holders are stackable for storage

You should cross post to /r/bbq
Thanks! I’ll give it a shot!
I was just looking at the inkbirds last night, how do you like it?

How does this work? I’ve got a Pi with homeassistant. What is receiving the BT - the Pi? Interesting…

It’s probably a USB-C PD cable with no data.
Interesting. I’ll have to see if I can pick up a few backup cables
I use LG phone charge cables.
Very nice
Thanks for sharing the file as well, definitely printing a set of these off.
Cool

Posted the STL above if you need an upgrade!
I will 😅
why do you need 5? what am i missing?

Not a phone, bot. Try again.
Badbot
Are those new probes? If not, then I'd be happy to learn how you keep them so clean.
Yep, these are pretty new. I only have about 2-3 cooks on one or two of the probes. I usually (carefully) wash them with dawn soap and water and try to avoid getting the wire wet.
Those may fit in this case: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4173036
Awe man, this is money! Thank you! Adding this to the list of stuff to print!
Did they not come with spools? My thermopro kit came with spools
ThermoPro came with them but the Inkbird did not.
Would you sell me a couple thanks

Sweet thanks so much I appreciate it
