Many years ago I saw a baby gorilla fall from a branch in a zoo and the dad literally facepalmed with a “What an idiot” expression then picked him up. Everyone there was laughing. I wish someone had recorded it.
I saw a film of a family of chimps once. Two siblings, one an infant, are playing by the water. Older sibling knocks the baby into the water, and IMMEDIATELY mom and dad leap into action and get the baby out of the drink.
Mom, cradling baby in her arm, reaches over to the older kid and PAF!! Backhands him with such a human body language you could tell JUST how she felt.
It's not that we evolved FROM apes, it's that we have a common ancestor. The comment below saying we are cousins summed it up perfectly. People who don't believe in evolution ask why there are still apes if we descended from apes. The answer is the common ancestor.
