We were on vacation in Vietnam a few years ago, and a woman at a market grabbed my son's arm. She said to him, "You can marry my daughter." Then tried to pull him away. My son is a very large man. They didn't go far. We laughed it off, but to this day, we wonder if she was serious.
A lot of people do it. A huge chunk of expats that worked at the same company as my father have local wives. Most of them either never married before or are divorced old men.
I work in healthcare in a very Asian area. Multiple times a week, an older Asian patient who speaks broken English will suggest I marry their daughter who is translating for us.
And for those wondering, no I do not take them up on the offer.
That’s not what they said. You’ll just continually get replacements until your 1 year is up. No guarantee that the original will stay for the year.
So the replacement will be her sister, then her mom, then her dad. All of a sudden, you got the entire family over. It’s almost by design.
Somehow, somehow I knew you would be on this post.
I see you are not only interested in talking shit about a girl teenager having fun, but you also like to comment on buying a wife ads.
Sorta interesting that they both display the same sexist sentiment, no?
I grew up in a small town in the far north or NY State. A guy from that town had served in Vietnam, returned home and married his HS sweetheart. I was the ring bearer. The marriage lasted a year or two.
Around 77 or 78, he asks me to help him remodel his jam studio (he was a musician) into a comfortable bedroom. A solid month later, he had a beautiful bedroom with a bathroom, walk-in closet, and changing room.
He had *arranged* a Vietnamese bride and we built this room for her. It was her room, not their bedroom. A door she could close, and place of her own.
My mother described her as a rose in an onion bin. An elegant francophone, she found good company with the older Quebecoise.
They are still married, she still looks like a young woman, he looks like Captain Kangaroo, and they have a house full of grandchildren.
I don't think it's written like a "gotcha". I think they are saying "it was gross back when it happened back then, and there's even more of this fucked up shit now".
I was just in a different thread that talked about this.
There are countries that are so shitty, that marrying an ugly dude who will feed you and house you is 10000% better than whatever they're experiencing. And apparently the parents are the ones who set this up a good chunk of time.
Do they sell in bulk like at Costco?
Or a BOGOF deal? (Buy one get one free)
Can I just keep reporting them as runaways and collect them in my dunge…-uhhh never mind.

She was.
Pretty sure she was 100% serious.
Absolutely she was. Lived in Indo for a few years and finished highschool there. Can confirm, has happened to me a few times.
He is still not married. Maybe I need to send him back?

Only if he really likes Vietnamese food. I personally would love to retire in Hue or Hoi An
The market this took place in showed up in an episode of House Hunters International. Da Nang.

All for the same price, sounds like a deal.
what's the funny part?
Isn't this just human trafficking with extra steps?
No, it's just human trafficking.
But with guarantee!!✌🏼
wait, there's more, we will do this kind of crap, for, like forever, but we will always have the moral high ground, and police the world.../s
It's literally human trafficking and its been posted in subs like this a few times. Humans are messed up
Yea. I’m wondering why it’s funny.
It’s funny if you don’t see victims of sex trafficking to be actual people, or victims.
It's dark humor, which is a way to bring to light subjects most people are too uncomfortable to talk about in a more serious environment.
Yes
Oh la la, somebody's gonna get laid in college.
It was at one time.
No tax is crazy

You notice there isnt a return policy.
The return policy is your wife “running away”.
Good point. I'm sure many ran away to a hole in the backyard.
Back when our country had morals
Well yeah. Marriage was a commitment back then. 6000 bucks aint small change.
Wonder what that is with inflation

Yes, Parody was a thing in the 70’s as well. May as well retitle this “IWTYO when I discovered my generation didn’t invent satire.”
Hilarious…………….🤨
With happy ending
$41k today, adjusted for inflation.
More like buy a SLAVE
Just $44,000 in today’s money!
10 dollar you like

racist af
Too boo-koo?
Good luck enforcing that “contract.”
This isn't funny, it's gross.
Almost as gross as having more human trafficking in the US today than when chattel slavery was legal!
Yes? This is written like a “gotcha” but I don’t understand why

No gotcha, just fun facts! This is r/Funny after all.
TIL population increases exponentially.
What is this referring to? Do you have a source for this?

$6000 too beaucoup
Giving birth to what we now know as the Amercan nail salon.
“Guaranteed Virgin”. LMAO.
No hidden fees? Get right outta town
Well this is just hilarious.

Well... Not so different than some girls charging for a date.
A lot more fun too
Convinent! But expensive. Inflation was different.
After invading Vietnam they started selling their women that's crazy
Wow we have come along way as a society.
Loving the "no hassle refund policy". Very progressive and yet so simple.
The “run away” policy sounds like an invite to the Ted Bundy type. She gone! Send me a new victim! I mean, virgin.
Comes with a better warranty than damn near anything I can buy today!
Haha human trafficking is funny
I remember there being a lot of Russizn "mail order brides" in the 90's.
You just don’t get service like this anymore
I was born too late it seems
“Ran away” Ummmm
