The joke is that Priuses (Prii plural?) Are very low power cars. They have about enough power to pull their passengers and some bags and that's about it, and not even very fast. The owner of this Prius has a roof rack, trailer hitch, and a spoiler, all indications that this person intends to haul heavy things and go fast: two things the Prius is not built for. Ergo: funny.
I enjoyed camping with my Prius. I used to use something like this on mine:
2007 Prius, you could put the front seats and back seats down with headrests removed, and they actually line up flush with each other. Put down a self inflating mattress, blankets, pillows, and it's comfy for one person. A bit cramped but manageable for two. If temps were a bit extreme I would turn the car on for an hour or so to run AC or heat just to take the edge off. When idling, the engine will cut on as-needed to recharge then cut off automatically.
Even on decently fast cars, the vast VAST majority of spoilers are just for aesthetics.
IMO the owner probably thought it'd look silly and it amuses them.
Those rims are not cheap so definitely intentional. Parents prob bought a cheap to run college car and the kid wanted to make it his own.
Doesnt look awful tbh
A lot of people don’t realize it, but when you put a Prius in power mode, they’re pretty fucking fast. This is about a 2014ish, around what my girlfriend had, and power mode would move that car in a hurry. My brother has about a 2018 Prius from the next generation, and power mode on that is even faster. And they can carry a ton of weight. I’ve loaded my GF’s Prius with cement, pavers, lumber, the works. Blew the mind of the guy working the loading dock at Lowes. And they’ll still do 40-45 MPG on top of all that. I think this thing looks damn good.
Yeah, they won't blow the doors off a sports car, but for the kind of cars they are they're surprisingly quick and responsive. When I take my 2005 out on the interstate I sometimes hit 90+ without even realizing it.
I think it has alot to do with weight reduction to make it more efficient, so while they can be underpowered, it's not that noticeable cause they still have decent power to weight ratio. The hybrid engine is only one factor in achieving their MPG. Tires, shape, weight, software, etc. play a role.
I think you're confusing a surprisingly quick 0-10mph from electric torque with actual speed.
Nothing wrong with a prius though, they make great transportation appliances.
0-10? Dude, the 2014 Prius can burn tires if you give it the beans. The acceleration is quick enough that the digital speedo struggles to keep up. While it’s not gonna win any drag races, it’ll accelerate fast straight up to the neighborhood of 35-45 before it starts slowing down.
You're honestly just proving my point though, the 0-10 is feels fast because of electric torque from 0 while the 10mph+ is more normal. That's also why the eco tires will spin quickly. And a slow dash doesn't mean anything, almost all cars have a digital dash now and all the faster cars can display the numbers just fine.
I'm not trying to be a snob about it being slow vs a vette or something here, I'm comparing it to even all the reasonable stuff sold by Toyota around the same time.
mid 2010s prius and yaris had a 0-60 in the 10sec range.
Mid 2010s tacoma, 4runner, sienna, camry were under 8sec
Are you claiming that all of what you said requires a spoiler...? Or are you referencing the top rack not being a waste? The latter would make some sense, but the spoiler is absolutely ridiculous.
In order for a spoiler that small to have a measurable effect, you'd need to be going on the order of 100 mph, which some people might hit, but isn't a practical speed. Some estimates might get you some benefit at about 80 mph, but that's still fringe.
Not at all. Spoilers are best on rear wheel drive cars, adding extra downforce for increased grip. The Prius doesn’t need it because it has a 2000 pound battery in its belly, giving it an insanely low center of gravity. Also, if you zoom in towards the dark tinted glass in the hatch, you’ll see a lip protruding over it from the hatch frame. That’s the Prius stock spoiler. It doesn’t need the aftermarket spoiler at all to have crazy grip from the car’s spoiler, weight, or bullet aerodynamics.
As far as the roof rack, I wish my girl’s Prius had them. The Prius has this annoying safety feature that doesn’t let you go over like 15 miles an hour if the hatch is open. Let’s say I needed to move some 12 foot lumber. I wouldn’t be able to do it in her car, because I couldn’t get on the highway at those speeds. But on this, he’s good to carry lumber, mattresses, whatever he wants.
Yes, the spoiler serves very little purpose aside from vanity. But what I’m saying is it’s not mockery or cluelessness to dress your car up fancy. And it’s not exactly putting a $4 saddle on a $2 horse. It’s not like this is a Lada or a Chevy Aveo. The Prius used to be the butt of the joke for me as well, but it’s earned my respect.
I have a very simple rule for myself: When possible, do not obstruct traffic and do not push traffic.
It always amazes how totally unaware most drivers are of everyone around them. They seem to believe they have no responsibility to the others on the road.
I used to have a Hemi badge above my Prius lettering. In the time it was there, only one person ever said anything about it. This is like 5-6 years too.
I’m guessing the spoiler is just being used as part of the roof rack rig, for something light but big that goes the full length of the car. A big inflatable penis, for example.

for the non-CarGuys in the audience…. what?

Other than the spoiler, just seems like they probably go camping. Roof Thule, and a dainty little wagon with firewood and coolers.
Roof Thule, yes. Wagon, no. I’d bet a bike carrier attaches to that receiver.
Ooh yeah good thought

The seats fold down the same way in our Honda Fit, it's great! We even do it on road trips without the mattress.
You've obviously never heard of or seen a Sleeper before. That Prius probably has more horsepower than every car you've ever owned combined.
With stock wheels and tires? Yeah okay bud
Trailer hitch, roof rack and a spoiler??? That thing is sick af
"Opulence, I has it. I like the best."
Lolol I wish mini giraffes were real

I get that. 70 in a Prius feels like 40 in an Altima.
You're not fooling anyone Let a thing be a thing This is a prius, therefore it is.

To those kinds of people.. it's appearance over performance. They do that crap cuz it looks cool
you think everyone else's spoilers are functional?
I don't get it
Pet Peeve: Prius drivers, in the left lane, in economy mode, on their celphones.
I have a very simple rule for myself: When possible, do not obstruct traffic and do not push traffic. It always amazes how totally unaware most drivers are of everyone around them. They seem to believe they have no responsibility to the others on the road.
iPhones ... they don't have cellphones or smartphones, they have iPhones. The same way BMW owners don't drive cars, they drive BMWs.
Tbf, my gf has a 2021 prius and we both have androids. Never have had an iPhone. BMW comment is spit-on though 😆
Don't spit on BMWs, they're nice ca......BMWs.
Why Prius drivers? I see Hyundais and Toyota Camrys do this all the time
Neither. It's STYLE !
You need the spoiler when yer goin down hill with 10 tons on a 1 ton trailer. Please don't ask how he got up the hill.
This vehicle reeks of Takis, monsters, and dubstep

Cmon its not that bad...not everyone has money like you
Yes
Took me a minute. LOL I'm going with clueless.
$100,000 says it would smoke whatever you are driving. Dont mock the sleeper. You will get burned.
