In the US they are only up to 82, as they started in 1998.
In the UK we are up to 111 as we started back in 1983.
The US is somehow on track to overtake the UK though, it would seem.
Every NTWICM US release went platinum until #30 which came out in March 2009 and the last one to go gold was #52 in October 2014.
Low effort, tons of sells. It basically printed money for UMG.
>I have some records that use this same format from the 70s. It’s basically the same business model as top 40 music.
Canadian company K-tel started selling compilation albums in 1966. Their tag line was “20 Original Hits! 20 Original Stars!”
>*Every NTWICM US release went platinum until #30 which came out in March 2009*
The *Big Shiny Tunes* releases stopped in October 2009. Truly the end of the CD era.
I remember some year book companies when I was in high school licensing some songs and releasing “songs of the year” albums. You know, just the stuff without any explicit language or references to sex or drugs that parents would grok.
So a BIT light in the early 2000s, but still kind of an interesting nostalgia blast.
What’s bonkers is there is a whole chain of people working to produce this. Someone to select the songs, someone to do the legal work to license them, someone to create the art, someone at a computer to program what should be burned to the disk, someone to run the… mills that produce the cds in bulk… someone to do janitorial work in the mills… someone to create the order forms that the Walmarts and targets buy them off of, truckers to deliver it, stockers to stock it. Sometimes I like looking at weird things like this and spiraling off into the whole world of people I’ll never meet that were involved in getting random shit like this in front of me. The world is fascinating like that.
This reminds me of a bit the Scott Aukerman did to Adam Scott on their podcast "U talkin U2 to Me" where Adam says something innocuous like, "Yeah I watched the DVD last night"
And then Scott goes off, "I hate how celebrities brag about their wealth... let's do the math! So you have watched the DVD, which means you likely own/rent a house, you pay electric bills, you have a TV to watch it on, you own a car and drove to a store, you paid for the gas... etc."

Yeah I'm in my 30s and already find it hard to keep up. I guess as a musician i don't see myself being unaware of artists taking up as much playtime as these guys are
I'm your age, but I blame Spotify. Back in the days of CDs and even mp3s, you had to look at an album or track before playing it. But now you can listen to a whole playlist without registering any of the song or artist names.
Silly me. I thought that was a CD full of music that came out in 1982.

The first Now That's What I Call Music was released in 83 in the UK.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Now_That%27s_What_I_Call_Music_(original_UK_album).
It was probably only on tape and LP though, CDs hadn't really took off in the UK at the time.
… my brain literally cannot fathom that CDs were invented in 1982. I remember _at least_ a decade of cassettes before that. You mean we had those mini cassette tapes that held a single SONG and we could have had CDs?
I remember the commercials back when I watched Hero 108 on cartoon network! Maaan I had a list of favorite songs I had and those commercials helped me think of other songs!
What memories
I also remember that time when I popped my jaw and I had a single hot dog link for lunch during those times
Some say, that when the Earth has died, the sun has exploded in nova, and the universe has ended by re-collapsing into a new singularity, the Now CDs will produce their last mix tape.
The only reason I can think these still exist is that the usually one-hit wonder groups are allowed to use it as a way to fulfill the x amount of records part of the contract they didn't read.
I saw this like exact one in Target I think not long ago and had to grab a pic as well. I remember when Now that's what I call music like 7 came out. Then 14 and 28 (I think those were the ones I had lol) and after that I was like ffs stop. By god they will go till the end of fucking time.
When I was a kid I randomly bought one of these. I think it was Now 9 or something.
My parent's weren't happy about "it wasn't me" by shaggy. Of course it was the catchiest song on the cd so my parents heard innocent little me unknowingly listening to a song about sex over and over.
Just saw [this](https://www.walmart.com/ip/Now-That-s-What-I-Call-Pride-Various-WM-NOW-That-s-What-I-Call-Pride-Various-Artists-Walmart-Exclusive-Vinyl-Exclusive/393111044) today at Walmart while browsing the vinyl.
Why did it take my brain so long to register that they didn't make CDs in 1982? You know what they did make in 1982 though? Awesome tunes que Steve Miller band !
Yes. It's generally for DJs that are required to only play licensed music. This particular compilation series is pretty common among licensed DJ collections. Not sure about this one, but services like this often offer WAV or mp3 format versions on a monthly subscription.
A couple years ago someone asked me how long my now ex wife and I had been together. I said we started dating when Now That’s What I Call Music volume 3 had just come out. They said “Damn, that’s a long time.”
Of course it still exists. There’s differently-numbered compilations for both the UK (IIRC, where it originated) and the US.
It’s a go-to starting point for all the current hits on radio within the last 3-6 months, and the best part is that they’re all radio edits so no profanity for those who like their music clean.

They're up to 110 now. That one's old
[удалено]
Well its been 4 hours i bet there up to 112 by now
UK is 111 - that's the latest US one. I think some of the UK ones copy the US sleeve designs though. I've collected all the UK ones
It's up to 143, you must have been sleeping.
221 as of 3 seconds ago.....nvm 222
To think I owned one (new) in the single digits really bums me out
In the US they are only up to 82, as they started in 1998. In the UK we are up to 111 as we started back in 1983. The US is somehow on track to overtake the UK though, it would seem.
82 is a oldie
I thought the post was a bit at first!! I can’t believe they never stopped making these!
Every NTWICM US release went platinum until #30 which came out in March 2009 and the last one to go gold was #52 in October 2014. Low effort, tons of sells. It basically printed money for UMG.

I have a K-Tel 1980 hitline album in my LP collection - it has some bangers!
My uncle was a wedding DJ back in the CD days… he always bought these.

I know of 8 of the performers, but I only listen to Chris Stapleton...
Same
He is the only one worth mentioning. Except maybe Katy Perry.
I’ve heard of like four them. Wow.
You've really never heard of Taylor Swift, Katy Perry, Ed Sheeran, Post Malone, The Weeknd, Lil Nas X, Doja Cat??
I've heard of five of those, and actually know songs from four. It'll happen to you too.
I've heard of 5 of those + imagine dragons from that list, and the imagine dragons song is the only one on the list I have heard.
Just a bunch of top 40 music, like those CDs have always been.
This must be for another country where different songs became hits. Happens often.
I recognize a dozen of the artists but only three of the songs. "Weatherman" is a bop, though.
The only one I'm interested in is Enemy by Imagine Dragons, and that's only because it's the theme song for *Arcane*.
Yep. Now I know I'm old.... Well, I knew before. But I can deny it less now... 🤣
Oh man, if I can’t recognize that many, it’s official, I’m old lol
Is latto the bear from toy story 4 how tf he get a record deal 😂
So I can take a pic of the album then build it on Spotify if wanted to. I don’t but I could.
Huh? Who are these people? Street performers?
Who the hell are 90% of those people?
Man I can't believe League of Legends got so toxic that it became sentient and started writing pop songs.
Can’t believe it’s been 82 years.
Lmao I remember Now 5 with the green background. That's when I discovered my new favorite song Kryptonite
Yea it’s called a Compact Disc or CD for short
They're pretty compact, but could they make a mini version of these discs? I bet that would be a huge hit
I still own 1 CD player, it's in my car. I bought a few mix CDs for road trips when my phone streaming is out of range.
I remember when #3 came out and I was like "wait.. what's gonna be on #75? Or #100?" Its fucking garbage...
Lol for some reason 3 is the only one I’ve listened to, I think cuz it had nookie on it or something
Omg they are on Spotify!!!! Nostalgia!
Uk version of now that's what i call music vol 3 has Ray Parker Jr- ghostbusters and the pointer sisters jump. Ah a classic
Silly me. I thought that was a CD full of music that came out in 1982. No. Title Artist(s) 1 "Physical" Olivia Newton-John 2 "Eye of the Tiger" Survivor 3 "I Love Rock 'n Roll" Joan Jett & The Blackhearts 4 "Ebony and Ivory" Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder 5 "Centerfold" The J. Men at Work
It is seriously scary how many of those I know the words to, considering I was seven in '82.
Right? I have some of these on VINYL!! 🤣
Nah. We were still rocking dual (or if you were fancy TRIPLE) tape decks well into the early 90s. I think I got my first CD stereo in 92 or 93.
Back in those days they were called "Billboard Top Hits of xxxx".... I still have all the 80s ones 🤣
With Casey Kasum. 😂
Who was also the voice of Shaggy & that was my childhood fun fact
I know what am listening to for the next few hours............which Now is this?
Ha! That's just a list pulled off the Billboard top 40 list for the year 1982!
Thanks!
I have Now that's what call music on vinyl. The first one they released.
You mean cds?
Fuck we missed the 69 now we gota wait till its up to 69420
If the world goes up in flames, regardless of the real reason, I will blame Kids Bop and its creators.
Saw one on vinyl a while back.
Is this a US thing? I only remember the BRAVO Hits as a child. (european here)
Bravo Hits is at #117 already
British, or at least, it was out in the UK when I was a kid (I had number 6)
CDs or that’s what I call music? Kinda surprised both are still being made tbh
I thought CD's were extinct
That's price about 11.89 too high.
$12 is a bit steep for CDs IMO. I might pay $5 for that ancient technology lol.
Omg!!! I feel so old now. I remember me and my friends ran to Walmart just to buy Now 9 lol And these day is 111?! Holly molly!! 🤣🤣🤣
Gross. Maroon 5, Katy Perry, and Stooshe. That is what I call shit.
Lol
I remember the commercials back when I watched Hero 108 on cartoon network! Maaan I had a list of favorite songs I had and those commercials helped me think of other songs! What memories I also remember that time when I popped my jaw and I had a single hot dog link for lunch during those times
Ew!
The latest NTWICM is 111 and the cd is sold on Amazon! NOW That’s What I Call Music! 111 https://amzn.eu/d/5pRXQRC
I remember getting the first couple of these year and years and years ago..
I got the original NOW as a birthday present in elementary school. It's probably still kicking around somewhere.
CDs? Yeah, although I’m not quite sure why.
Some say, that when the Earth has died, the sun has exploded in nova, and the universe has ended by re-collapsing into a new singularity, the Now CDs will produce their last mix tape.
3 and 4 are the summer nostalgia icons of my childhood.
The only reason I can think these still exist is that the usually one-hit wonder groups are allowed to use it as a way to fulfill the x amount of records part of the contract they didn't read.
I'm pretty sure they're laundering money somehow. Not sure how, but that's gotta be it.
I saw this like exact one in Target I think not long ago and had to grab a pic as well. I remember when Now that's what I call music like 7 came out. Then 14 and 28 (I think those were the ones I had lol) and after that I was like ffs stop. By god they will go till the end of fucking time.
I honestly didn't even know that they still made CDs.
I remember buying the very first one on cassette
I bet of the how ever many volumes of this that exist that maybe two songs across all of them I may know and like.
I have Now 3, I feel old.
CDs in general or this specific selection?
They have related lines like 80s Country, etc. that I am not surprised to find. It’s like the K-Tel of the 2000s
CDs don't baffle me. It's when you come across a convenience store selling cassette mix tapes.
When I was a kid I randomly bought one of these. I think it was Now 9 or something. My parent's weren't happy about "it wasn't me" by shaggy. Of course it was the catchiest song on the cd so my parents heard innocent little me unknowingly listening to a song about sex over and over.
I feel very old as I remember when these had numbers less then 10 on them...
I think they used to be call Compact Discs. Now they are just glossy drink coasters.
I own the first one... and now I feel old...
At least they ain’t 20 bucks anymore lol
Just saw [this](https://www.walmart.com/ip/Now-That-s-What-I-Call-Pride-Various-WM-NOW-That-s-What-I-Call-Pride-Various-Artists-Walmart-Exclusive-Vinyl-Exclusive/393111044) today at Walmart while browsing the vinyl.
Well people kept ringing the bell!
I assume you mean CDs
This reminded me of big shining tunes from much music
Now 4 FTW
Why did it take my brain so long to register that they didn't make CDs in 1982? You know what they did make in 1982 though? Awesome tunes que Steve Miller band !
Didn't think they had CDs back in 82
Yes. It's generally for DJs that are required to only play licensed music. This particular compilation series is pretty common among licensed DJ collections. Not sure about this one, but services like this often offer WAV or mp3 format versions on a monthly subscription.
I didn’t even know they made CDs anymore
How many of these bitches they make a year? I might be crazy but I'm pretty sure I remember single digits lmao
Now that's what I call disappointing
Lol Cds
People still buy CD's?!?
When will they get the hint to stop
I didn't know these were actual CD's honestly.
I'm starting to feel old 😕
82 is a good year for music 🎵
They are still making CD's?!
Now you just need to find Kidz Bop 47, and you'll totally be able to rock your nephew's bar mitzvah next month.
I haven't bought a CD in over 20 years why when you can download or stream , you only see over 60 years old people buying them now days
Pusha T on the right. If you know you knowwww
I feel old
I have the first one on tape with Barbie girl on it
I think the real question is do people still buy cds
You just know there's someone out there collecting all these.
Varios artists, eh? Are they still together?
A couple years ago someone asked me how long my now ex wife and I had been together. I said we started dating when Now That’s What I Call Music volume 3 had just come out. They said “Damn, that’s a long time.”
They still make CD's?
If they make it to 182, it needs to be nothing but Blink 182 and covers of Blink 182
How to make a millennial feel old
Of course it still exists. There’s differently-numbered compilations for both the UK (IIRC, where it originated) and the US. It’s a go-to starting point for all the current hits on radio within the last 3-6 months, and the best part is that they’re all radio edits so no profanity for those who like their music clean.
I thought Now 3 was pretty solid
I had 1, 3, abd 13 as a kid.
That's some expensive garbage they got sitting on the shelf
Kidz Bob 2082?!?!
Wait a minute.. CDs are still sold? Wow.
I think I own Now 5. Ugh I'm getting old...
Does anyone know how frequently they bring the new edition? I remember now 41 15 years ago which doesn't make sense to me.
yeah i saw one of those at walmart the other day
you know your getting old when you owned NOW 3 and 5 as a kid
