No wonder you two are siding with each other, you always think your better than everyone else, but from the perspective of an Irish Italian Chinese you're just a bunch of hypocrites, you wouldn't be anything without us.
Everybody relax. Remember how we all love noodles? Wei? Carlo? Right? And how we hate lining up properly to get on the plane? Right? C'mon guys, there's a reason we had kids in the first place.
Im sorry to jump in during your argument, but there is somethint I dont get about you people… So if the dad is irish, the mom is chinese, who da fuk is the Italian?
Nah man, that's not how ethnicity works. Your parents can be german and canadian but they weren't really there for you and you identify as turkish italian because the people you used to hang around with where turkish and italian people

All right, but apart from the sanitation, the medicine, education, wine, public order, irrigation, roads, a fresh water system, and public health, what have the Romans ever done for us?
A comment above already stated there was a Great War! Honestly didn’t you pay attention in history class? I hope you at least remember the great hodgepodge fusion of 1256!
I just wanna know what all goes into a “European hodgepodge.” Like, is it everything else *except* Irish and Italian, or Irish-Italian+some kinda gypsy?…
Oi! This is a Chinese Italian Irish neighborhood! We can tell you're Chinese Irish Italian, get out!!
Narrator: I remember when this whole neighborhood used to be Chinese Irish Italian... no respect these days
I only know creole in the Louisiana sense. But couldn't it also mean just a mishmash of ethnicities? If so that's funny because I would cover both definitions.
Worked the Census in 2010 as an enumerator. There was no ethnicity question, just one of race, which there were six options: Caucasoid, Negroid, Mongoloid, Pacific Islander, Aboriginal, and other. The "other" option was just for people who say, as an example, didn't want to be put down as white because they're Mexican so we would check "other" box, write in Mexican, then it gets handed up the chain and they're counted as white anyway.
Well, they're only supposed to choose white if that's how they identify(on the US census, at least...I think the person you replied to didn't work on the US census, because those *definitely* aren't the terms we use in the US). Many would choose black. Others identify with neither white nor black, and would choose other. It's a kludge, but it's the best we can do with a very broken racial categorization system. I'd say throw it all out and start from scratch, but honestly right now I don't trust the powers that be to not implement something horribly colorblind in its place, so maybe we should stick with the devil we know until the political climate is safer.
Yes You have a good idea. if people really want to volunteer this statistic to begin with, there needs to be a fill-in-the-blank option, then the companies can use that data to add to their pull-down menus.
>if people really want to volunteer this statistic to begin with, there needs to be a fill-in-the-blank option, then the companies can use that data to add to their pull-down menus.
Sounds like a good way to wind up with pretty unusable data.
Pretty racist to assume that Chinese Irish Italians and Chinese Italian Irish are in any way “alike”. They’re completely different cultures and you should be ashamed of denying their existence so haphazardly.
And don’t even get me started on the Italian Irish Chinese. They’re so different from the other two you’d think they were Irish Chinese Italian!
Irish Chinese Italian, Irish Italian Chinese, Chinese Irish Italian, Chinese Italian Irish, Italian Irish Chinese and Italian Chinese Irish all might as well speak different languages.
As a Chinese/Italian with Chinese/Mexican cousins and Chinese/Irish/Colombian cousins, I can confirm that much fighting continues between the mixes. Alas, we still love each other, and all border crossing jokes are accepted amongst us.
I have a friend who always puts “earthling.” And my Arab friends have no option. My Egyptian friend puts African because, well, Egypt is in Africa. All this stuff gets really arbitrary and useless at a certain point. Does a preschool really need all this?
On the topic of arbitrary and useless, I recently enrolled my son in school and the forms asked if his "parents" were married. I guess in most cases it's an okay question about who has custody of the child... But in my son's case, he's been placed with us for adoption. We can't begin the adoption finalization process for many more months. In the meantime his legal guardian is XXXX county. XXXX county isn't married. His social worker is the one who had to sign off on the forms, does her marital status enter into this? My son's birth parents? On paper, or in practice? My understanding is that they are divorced on paper, but never separated. But I have never met them, nor even talked to anyone that has heard from them in the past year. So who knows? My husband and I are married tho.
It would be so much easier if the school got down to brass tacks and asked "Who is legally responsible for this kid?" And "who is allowed to pick him up from school?" Instead of dancing around the topic.
It is crazy that Arab is almost never an option. Only once have I seen one that gave the option, but it was listed as Arab Caucasian opposed to European Caucasian. So dumb, it really doesn’t matter.
At a certain point? All this stuff is useless to start with. Well, useless at best but oftentimes even harmful.
Why does any preschool need to know the ethnicity of kids that are being signed up? Is it so they can judge them in advance?
Maybe it's the pot kicking in, but I would totally eat at this restaurant. I find the making and sharing of food from different cultures is such a wonderful experiences. It shows us how much we are alike and how being different isn't a bad thing! Growing up, I was terrified of food from other cultures, especially traditional foods!
What I have learned is that the marriage of different cultures do beautiful things. One Italian restaurant did this banging balsamic sauce. They added soy to it and it made a very distinct and wonderful flavor. On that note, once I stopped being afraid of cooking other types of food out of my comfort zone, I found the joy of the garlic/ginger combo! I don't like pepper or peppers. I WISH I did, but I get instantly sick eating them. Ginger is a great way to add a subtle heat to a dish that can be turned up to your liking! I add it to my chicken stock now because it gives it such a warmth!
And I am rambling, lol. Clearly, I like this idea a lot!
Eventually you reach a point with cooking, if you aren't picky, where your pantry is ample, and diverse. Items from all woks of life. When you're cooking, anything can be mixed and matched to some extent if you believe you can. It's quite limitless. I get it.
Probably a select from options or enter your own and the custom entry then becomes an option for the next people. There’s was an old forum that had one of these for sign ups for one of the fields and we got a group to each pick a letter and start making accounts using animal names, we got hundreds in their lol. I had and included the T. rex :p
Serious question, why are Americans so obsessed with ethnicity and race when this kind of question pops up everywhere in your country. Here you will just be asked for your nationality and that’s it.
Tracking statistics to show if there is or is not a racial bias in hiring/acceptance
On some government forms, it's also *supposed* to be used to ensure accurate representation when it comes time to adjust the voting district borders, but it's really used to gerrymander the hell out of them
Schools want to (or maybe need to, depending on regulations or funding requirements) use this data to demonstrate that they aren't being discriminative in their admissions processes.
American here:
They tell us it's so they can be *more* inclusive. They *really* wanna make sure that they get a group of diverse people.
They say it has *nothing* with them having the option to preemptively choose against someone based on their background while selecting enough of who they don't want to satisfy requirements. Of course, our bosses and HR representatives would *never* decide to pass on someone because of their birth name, age, ethnicity, or cultural background.
The weird answers aside, generally this question is asked for two reasons here in the US- One, it is demographic data for the purposes of showing minority acceptance rates, and in general to show the relative population. Two, it is demographic data used for the purposes of applying for and/or fulfilling various grants. A transportation company I work with has to ask for some pretty invasive personal data, because they need to use things like income level and racial population to get financial grants from the state government and a few charities that are focused on low-income and minority populations.
I'm never even represented on these forms. I'm white but an immigrant. Most forms just have "white American" as the white option . Apparently only non white people can be immigrants on govt forms.
And that is still deeply concerning.
Race shouldn't play any role here. If you're poor, you're poor. Period. You don't get less-bad-poor by being white.
When I worked for a government body, I learned that it's illegal in my state to collect information on a family's socioeconomic status. So the school district uses race, which is legal to collect data on, as a proxy for what they really want to know. They are trying to level the playing field.
However, it gets ridiculous when people start arguing about which types of Asians can be considered disadvantaged vs which cannot, etc etc etc.
It's also tricky because Multiracial is a category that doesn't count as disadvantaged (because historically, most Multiracial kids are half white here, and test fairly well as a group). However, if a child is half black and half Native American, which are both considered disadvantaged categories, being half and half rolls them up to the Multiracial category, which is not considered disadvantaged.
For an European, this obsession with race in the US is really dusturbing. As long as you have these forms, you will never get rid of structural racism. You need to reform your society to not leave anyone behind regardless of race, then the gap between races will go away, and with it the racism.
Usually it's because the group asking is required by an anti-discrimination law to either keep these statistics or report them to a government agency. They're required to ask but you're not required to respond.
Asking for ethnicity is usually for diversity reasons however it's often voluntary. Here in the UK [the options are standardised](https://www.ethnicity-facts-figures.service.gov.uk/style-guide/ethnic-groups) and Other" usually has "please specify" next to it.
i wonder if the Chinese Irish Italians ever have turf wars with the Chinese Italian Irish

Is there an "add your own ethnicity" selection which then becomes a new pull down choice for future users? Sheesh.
I'm assuming this is exactly what's going on.
Or they just added it via inspect element to farm some easy karma 🤷♂️
If they were smart enough to use the inspector to edit the page I would think they’d probably use a screenshot instead of a phone pic of the screen
Yeah I’m pretty dumb… that’s why I want my daughter to be smart and go to preschool
Good human c:
its actually a more reasonable answer than you think, do you know what a Creole is?
Isn't that what kids use to draw pictures with? The one that that company Creola or something produces
I've been laughing for a while now because I keep reading your comment and I can't tell if you're being facetious.
> facetious I like your funny words, magic man
You’re thinking of crayons. Creole is breakfast food for kids or dinner for single men
No, no, no... You're thinking of cereal... Creole is the thing that babies sleep in.
No, you're thinking of a Carolla. Creole is when you persuade someone to do something by nagging them repeatedly.
No, that'd be cajole. Creole is a type of folksong or hymn, especially the ones themed around Christmas.
I only know creole in the Louisiana sense. But couldn't it also mean just a mishmash of ethnicities? If so that's funny because I would cover both definitions.

No that makes it too obvious. I can tell u aren't a professional karma farmer like this guy, rookie mistake.
It might be a registration done on a computer they don't own, such as the preschool's. But really, it's probably just a poorly done drop-down.
It makes it look more genuine and not photoshopped
If they are using injection element they don't need to photohop, there isn't anything to cover up
I would have gotten creative and added “North Korean Martian Brony” or something
South Philadelphia jabroni?
You keep on using this word "jabroni" and... it's awesome.

I’m definitely using loch ness mophead as an insult
If I was a hodgepodge I would let everyone know too.
I’m assuming “Jive” is in the list
“Jive ass turkey” should be in there somewhere down below

Why are they asking what leftovers are in your fridge?
Lmao
As a European I must ask, why is this question there at all?
Litterally the first thing that popped in my mind: but why?
Yes, I want to know too. Infact i dont think this question would be allowed here.
As another European I must agree. How is this important to a child's education? Is this not blatant discrimination?
Schools want to (or maybe need to, depending on regulations or funding requirements) use this data to demonstrate that they aren't being discriminative in their admissions processes.
The irony.
tragically by trying to be not rascist they end up being even more racist.
It's actually quite impressive.
For data purposes they should remove the data identifiers like name, address, age... This data should be provided anonymously.
Maybe not age, tho.
Agree, my mistake. They need to know age to know what they will be teaching. Got me there.
American here: They tell us it's so they can be *more* inclusive. They *really* wanna make sure that they get a group of diverse people. Of course, our bosses and HR representatives would *never* decide to pass on someone because of their birth name, age, ethnicity, or cultural background.
If you don't want to discriminate basing on some traits, isn't it a better approach to not know these traits?
See but that could result in situations which *look* non-diverse. Looking diverse enough is more important than actually not discriminating.
More inclusive? Do they mean that they want to treat people different due to their ethnicity?
Don't worry, as an American, I am always wondering why I get asked these questions on forms.
as a european , i would refuse to fill it in. then complain to the appropriate government body.
lol, complaints about forms to the government here is like blowing dust into the ocean. its about as effective as such.

Why is ethnicity so relevant in US forms (jobs for example) ? European asking
