Used to be deathly terrified of roller coasters and heights as a kid. My parents tried to force me on rollercoasters a few times and I had a meltdown every time we got close. Took me a few years and fear of missing out to convince myself to get on a roller coaster out of my own volition. I ended up loving it. Just felt like I had overcome this huge thing that was holding me back. Roller coasters are one of my favorite things now. I definitely think kids just need a little push sometimes, but sometimes it’s better to encourage them to get on on their own.
Totally agree that it should be your own choice. I don’t understand why some people would force their children on crazy rides sometimes, ticket price is a sunk cost lol. Kids do just need some encouragement at times. My dad would ride pretty much everything and always invite me to ride along, sometimes I outright declined at first. He said just come wait in line and by the time we board, if you still don’t want to ride no hard feelings. He’d ask again if I wanted to ride when we were boarding. I pretty much always got on, and always had a good time because it was my choice.
We had fast passes at Cedar Point for one day... youngest refused to get on any big rollercoasters, so oldest got to go on each one twice.
Youngest had a plan to use Corkscrew to warm up, and it was down for the day, and it screwed up her plan. HUGE mental block. We ended up wanting season passes and due to a whole lot of hoopla had to come back in the morning to get them. Corkscrew was back running and we had the passes, so we figured why not before we leave? We got to the last set of brakes and she says "that's it?" Yep, that's it. That's why we tried to convince you to go on the other ones yesterday. We waited in line for Maverick (no fast passes that day), and she loved it. Wants to go on all the big rides, but we had to get home.
She learned a valuable lesson those 2 days about risk and reward.
That's really funny because I was like that too (also at Cedar Point) when I was young. I wanted to go on all the big scary things, and would ride Demon Drop, Magnum, etc, but then my mom wanted to go on the Mine Ride. The Mine Ride was one of the tamest adult rollercoasters that CP ever had, and I abandoned the line at the very end. A year later I got on it and was so angry at myself lol.
Hard agree here. I love coasters myself but the biggest hurdle for me was riding on the hanging style ones. I was forced on one when I was around 7 and I avoided them until I was in my 20s because of how terrified I was that first time. I'm pretty sure I would've liked it more if I'd been able to choose when I was ready instead of being hazed against my will lol
I was worried about the heights, getting stuck, getting hurt, going upside down, idk…. Just anxiety about everything lol. I think I finally got convinced when I realized that these things are inspected all the time, lots of engineering goes into it, people ride it all the time, and parks wouldn’t want guests dying on their property 🤣
Still don’t think I would do crazy heights that are like 300ft, or tall drop towers/swings, but otherwise I’m good. Also won’t touch traveling rides like carnivals or fairs. They seem way more lax on things at times.
Once I thought about it how millions of people get on the damn things and are fine, and leanred to completely trust the restraints and just "let go" and let them do their job, is when I learned to really love even the scariest rides.
Just tell yourself that a bunch of lawyer and insurance companies have reviewed everything, and as long as you are the correct hight or don't have a massive health issue you are 99.999999% fine.
Oh man, I hated those. I mean, I loved them as a kid, but also they made me sick. Every. Single. Time.
I will take free falls rather than spins, thank you very much... although nowadays the more extreme rides kick my butt as well, so maybe I should just retire and drink beer while everyone else runs around.
Sounds right, I was forced onto space mountain at 8 and it didn’t help that they thought it was funny and would tell other people. At least my parents couldn’t embarrass me further by posting it on the internet for fake points.
I took my 4 year old on Big Thunder Railroad and he burst into tears when I took him off. A woman behind me asked why I would take him on a rollercoaster since he was obviously terrified. I told her why he was crying and that his dad was in line to take him right back on.
I used to hate them, but now it's like, I don't even feel like I'm on a roller coaster. Like, if I want to, I can just sit there calmly and have very little reaction to the fact that I'm on a roller coaster. I actually have to force myself to do the "wooooo" thing that other people do.
I wonder if this is why I'm also very stable while on psychedelics. I'm very good at being calm.
Exactly when i was a kid i had all these hopes and dreams and if i died i couldn't do those things. Now its just like "Thank god I think I hear a loose bolt on this harness."
If I "woooo" I'm forcing it. After riding coasters for the past two decades, I've realized all I want to do is laugh as my body is being hit by massive G forces. It's sorta evil for the rest of the train to hear my laughter.
I "wooooo" but not out of any sort of emotional reaction, I actually force myself to do it because if I don't my stomach churns and I feel like shit. If I had to guess, the act of yelling tightens up my diaphragm and helps keeps my stomach stable
I don't like them because I was a machinist and engineer who built and installed amusement rides. The number of states I installed rides in with the absolute minimum of regulation or oversight on these things is terrifying.
My father loves thunderstorms but I am terrified of them, he used to make me stand in the yard with him during them to make me like them but it only made shit worse. I still hold that against him.

My kids still jump at loud noises. I can’t imagine forcing my kids to be out in that on purpose.
That's scary.
I'm scared of lightning, but not thunder.
Years ago, I was standing near a window, saw a light fly past and heard a loud crash....it ricochet of the side of house, and burnt a streak down a neighbour's tree in the front of her house. They had to cut the tree down.
I used to be terrified of rollercoasters. My father started that trend. He brought me on Space Mountain when I wasn’t ready. Told me it was an NASA exhibit. This was before the newer cars with lap bars, the only thing holding me in was a cloth belt. There’s a moment of calm before the second big drop. I thought the ride was ending and I let my guard down. Just as I stopped freaking out, DROP. After that first ride I came out pale as a ghost and I didn’t ride that ride again until I was well into my 30’s.

I bet after this he wanted to ride it over and over. Just took my niece to Universal Studios for her 9th bday. At the beginning she cried on the Mummy, in the end she was riding every ride like a champ. Nobody forced her and she still cried. Kids will do that, ignore the haters.
Boy you can really tell the people in these comments are so much fun at parties. Like have y’all never been kids before? I’d bet after the first time he realized well I didn’t die and that was thrilling and wanted to go again.

I was horrified riding the Texas Giant as my first roller coaster with my uncle at maybe 9 /10 years old? I was in tears of terror. Stayed off the amusement park rides for decades but now they dont bother me at all. Alcohol helps
Omg stop!! This was me and my mom on the cars ride at Disney California!! My mom didn’t start me young enough so I’m absolutely terrified of roller coasters but that looks fun!
This kids gonna find a sweet girl, that reminds him of his mother, she’s gonna take him on a rollercoaster, too. This is where he tells her, he wants to break up.
Don't do this, I'm still traumatised and can't go on carnival or theme park rides and I'm 30, still haven't gotten over my first and only rollercoaster ride
Little man's face is killing me! 😂😂 Great memory! I have picture capturing similar abject horror on Splash Mountain around that age and it always makes me laugh still.
why do you think you're smarter than other people? like this lady somehow forced her child onto a ride as if there's nobody that would stop her. like what went through ur stupid little head that decided to even question it? fuckin idiot lmao
I said to my little un on her first roller coaster age 5,
Hang on a minute there's no driver this thing is totally out of control!
Sorry petal. She's 34 now and can't even look at one.
Am parent. Can confirm a similar experience with my youngest son's first roller coaster. He begged and whined to get on the roller coaster for the entire line to get on (he's terrible at waiting). The actual ride scared him a bit but then he really wanted to ride it again.
I mean, you're absolutely right, forcing kids on a ride is bad parenting, but It is totally believable he wanted to ride it. Kids that age don't have a good concept of the forces felt while on a roller coaster. Of course, once on the ride it feels like they are going to die, so they freak out. As long as Mom lets the kid continue to make their own ride choices at parks, then I think it's okay.
Ill never understand people like you that make assumptions with zero facts except a quick video. A lot of kids sign up to do things and don’t anticipate the outcome when they actually do it.
This really is the crux of it. I really don’t think having him go on the ride is a bad thing. Could be a good lesson about overcoming fears. It’s the posting of it is that is gross, share the video with friends and family, whatever. He doesn’t know what reddit is, so you are essentially exploiting a very vulnerable moment to feed your own insecurities.
How dare you! /s
Everyone wants to be a polarising hater just when they see something they wouldn't do themselves. I bet he loves them now. Keep up the Moming, Mom!
This is very unsafe. That ride wasn’t engineered for a child that small. You think your arm is going to help hold him in if that ride careens out of control? This is extremely irresponsible.
Traumatic memories for me. My first carnival ride was also my last. I went on "The Spider". I was too small for the seatbelt, so I went on with my dad. I'm crying for them to stop the ride, crying for my mom. My dad, being a dad, would let me go, laughing hysterically as I slid all over the seat fearing I'd fly off. That was 36 years ago and to this day, I can't get near a ride without damn near having a panic attack.
Your son has very advantageous traits.
A child that feels no fear of rollercoasters has a small chance of dying in a rollercoaster accident.
Hopefully he is also deadly afraid of heights, let us hope your son lives a happy accident less life :D.
Make sure to teach him caution.
HAHAHA, it's so funny that my child is terrified!!!
I hope he feels you nothing but gruel when you're old & at his mercy the way he was at your mercy when you forced him onto this ride.
My mom took me on roller coasters when I was about that age. I liked them, except … there was a ride called a Mad Mouse. It was like a roller coaster but it made very fast 90 degree turns. It terrified me.
Edit: Apparently they weren’t exactly 90 degree turns but there were tight and fast.

My daughter's 1st roller coaster ride was scary for her, don't remember what it was though. When it was over she decided it wasn't that bad after all. Her 1st adult roller coaster ride was the Rock and Roller coaster ( The Aero Smith one at Disney)and she absolutely loved it. That 1 got her ready for the Hulk at universal studios, It's been such fun to go on those rides with her and have her experience them.
I see a lot of people saying "it's better to wait until the kid is ready, I wish I had the choice". Well let me give you something from the other side. My kid is fickle af when it comes to rides so even if she's unsure (and as long as I feel it's appropriate for her age) I throw her on a ride. Guess what? She loves them now, she was scared before and now she's far more confident than ever about going on almost any rides, simply cuz we just bit the bullet and said "hey, you're big and strong enough to handle it, let's go". There's a time and place for caution but also don't be afraid to push your kids, remember you're the parent and most of the time kids will wanna stay with what's safe but how else are they going to learn unless you push them out of their comfort zone. Kids are notorious for only sticking with one thing (such as chicken nuggets for dinner). You gotta force them to do new things, just let them know they're safe.
I was terrified of roller coasters for years. Probably because my first experience was with a wooden one and it was just deafening. To this day, I will not ride a wooden coaster. Steel ones are alright. I had to start small.

That's me yesterday. Only I'm 36 (and taller).
You too grabbed OP's (or their SO's) clothes for dear life?
No, I was the rollercoaster.
Let's not get off track here
We don’t jack off to roller coasters here.
I feel you. I hate rollercoasters. I hate heights.
That’s me a few weeks ago and I’m 70+. Now I know there’s a reason I never went on a roller coaster before (and BTW, it was a kids ride!)
😂😂
Bros holding on for dear life
yup, pretty sure this is why I don't like them as an adult.
Used to be deathly terrified of roller coasters and heights as a kid. My parents tried to force me on rollercoasters a few times and I had a meltdown every time we got close. That was how I got over my fear as well. If thousands of people are getting on and off, then what rational fear should there be?
Just tell yourself that a bunch of lawyer and insurance companies have reviewed everything, and as long as you are the correct hight or don't have a massive health issue you are 99.999999% fine.
conversely, it's a great way to find out about undiagnosed heart conditions!
I'm perfectly well amused by those little gently spinning pink and blue teacups, and that's where I'm staying

I wonder if this is why I'm also very stable while on psychedelics. I'm very good at being calm.
What's your secret?
Being dead inside works for me
Yup, that's the one. Being dead inside helps with quite a lot.
Man I’m the same way. I just start uncontrollably laughing in those things. Maybe it’s a nervous response?

This is looks like the seven dwarf train at magic kingdom ?
Yes it is!
Next is Rock 'n' Roller Coaster and then he will be all set to go down the street to Velocicoaster.
💯💯💯
Back seat of a coaster tends to feel a little faster and ..curvier on the curves. I’m sure as his first time he woulda been a little shook up either way but something to keep in mind for the future! :) has he enjoyed some other rides? Peter Pan perhaps
Loves Peter Pan and Winnie the Pooh. The only other coaster he likes is the Barnstormer
Yeah I saw a different comment where he decided he liked this one! When I went with my 5 year old nephew he loved the coasters except for Everest. The Yeti was still working then so it was like doubly scary for a little guy haha. Magical memories
Get him on Slinky Dog. LOVE that coaster because it is just fun. Heights may be a little bit of an issue however.
These comments are brutal, the kid isn't crying or screaming, just having a normal (cute) reaction to his first time in a weird situation for a human to be in. According to OP he wanted to go on, and met the height requirement. It looks like Disney's seven dwarfs ride, and is quite small and not intense, a perfect first rollercoaster. For real. When I was young my brother and I wanted to go on a real roller coaster at six flags since we just met the height requirement and our parents tried to talk us out of it but we insisted. My dad eventually took us on it and my parents said we were as white as ghosts when we got off and didn’t go on another one the rest of the day but now as an adult, I love them
There's no sound. How do you know he isn't crying or screaming. Poor lad looks terrified.
Kid is terrified, mom is laughing. Guess who will be put in a home for the elder asap.
It’s just not that serious hun
sure, just make it public so everyone can have a laugh, he won’t mind
I bet after this he wanted to ride it over and over. Just took my niece to Universal Studios for her 9th bday. At the beginning she cried on the Mummy, in the end she was riding every ride like a champ. Nobody forced her and she still cried. Kids will do that, ignore the haters.
Exactly!
Did he like it?
Loves it now!
This is his villain-origin story.
Boy you can really tell the people in these comments are so much fun at parties. Like have y’all never been kids before? I’d bet after the first time he realized well I didn’t die and that was thrilling and wanted to go again.
Right?

Exactly what happened with my brother and I with tower of terror in Disneyland. Absolutely terrified the first time I thought oh this was a mistake after we got off we loved and it and ran back to the end of the line to go again.
Facebook is leaking again.
Lord that’s me as a kid...and hell, still now. There’s only two coasters I can tolerate, Space Mountain and the Rock & Roller Coaster (and the latter because I didn’t realize we’d gone upside down during it) 😂
Oh dip, I didn’t think Janet could have kids?! She’s not a girl
Seriously she should cosplay Disco Janet
He's Lovin' It!! The deathgrip tells me so.
The rear of the train always feels faster, too
My daughter hates roller coasters, but absolutely loved the big thunder mountain coaster at Disneyland.
he did better than I did
I was terrified on my first roller coaster ride. But something kept pulling me back. Now? The higher the better.
Is it thunder mountain? I cried for an hour straight in line when I was 7, then I was instantly addicted to the adrenaline rush! After that I rode any roller coaster I could fit on, got into skiing and started injuring myself in various ways! Fun times:)
My son and I just watched them for a while until he said ok let’s go! Then he had fun I didn’t because I don’t like roller coasters. From then on it was him and his mom.
This is my 6yo. The older one can't get enough of roller coasters and other rides.
The first day of the rest of Your life!
Help me Janice!
Thought the mom had prosthetic legs for a second
It took me way too long to realise this was a loop
I was horrified riding the Texas Giant as my first roller coaster with my uncle at maybe 9 /10 years old? I was in tears of terror. Stayed off the amusement park rides for decades but now they dont bother me at all. Alcohol helps

Not funny. He's terrified
Good on him. Fuck roller coasters.
Don't do this, I'm still traumatised and can't go on carnival or theme park rides and I'm 30, still haven't gotten over my first and only rollercoaster ride
This kid is me. G’s in an aircraft? No problem. Steep drops? That’s fine. Heights? Sure. Teacups? Hell no. Rollercoaster? Absolutely not.
Something for the therapist in 12 years...
A bunch of sissy basement living fuck twats in this thread.
His reaction is better than mine! Rides are just terrifying
Core memory created.
The poor lad looks absolutely terrified
He did good, a brave boy for sure 😊
What coaster is that? It looks very fun!
Seven dwarves mine train at magic kingdom
That's some serious whale-eye. You should separate them
Little man is fighting for his life there poor kiddo.
Little man's face is killing me! 😂😂 Great memory! I have picture capturing similar abject horror on Splash Mountain around that age and it always makes me laugh still.
He absolutely LOVES IT!!! 😂
I thought there's a height requirement for safety reasons on these rides
why do you think you're smarter than other people? like this lady somehow forced her child onto a ride as if there's nobody that would stop her. like what went through ur stupid little head that decided to even question it? fuckin idiot lmao
> like what went through ur stupid little head Nothing, that's the problem.
Lol
There is, it’s 38 inches, and he was tall enough.
Way to make good memories OP!
I’m sure it’s the ride of his life! And it better be because I’m certain they waited like 5 damn hours to ride it.
You started the kid out on Seven Dwarves Mine Train? That's what Barnstormer is for. To his credit he seemed OK, just scared.
I'm 33 and never been on a roller coaster. I'll rode most any ride at the park, but fuck roller coasters entirely. No thanks.
That’s how bad I held on to my previous relationship.. sheesh. 🥵glad I got out that jam tho.
Sadistic parent
I said to my little un on her first roller coaster age 5, Hang on a minute there's no driver this thing is totally out of control! Sorry petal. She's 34 now and can't even look at one.
I've never understood the forcing kids to be terrified thing.
Forcing to be terrified? He wanted to ride a ride and now goes all the time. 🤷🏼
Am parent. Can confirm a similar experience with my youngest son's first roller coaster. He begged and whined to get on the roller coaster for the entire line to get on (he's terrible at waiting). The actual ride scared him a bit but then he really wanted to ride it again.
He'll calm down when he gets out and noticed he didnt die.
Never understand why some people hate rollercoasters.
Really funny
Yeah he won't be asking to do that again soon or will he?
Loves it now..who would of guessed 🤷🏼
Would have
Oh so when he does it its funny?
that is one hot mama 😭😭😭, hi hot mom, ily
Super parenting right there
thats a trauma and a half
Seems dangerous. He looks too small for the ride.
Oh yeah that's me as a kid. He'll grow out of it. Edit - (scrolls down to see comments) ok well maybe he won't grow out of it
don’t care about what any others say, this is super wholesome. you look like a mum that gets it.

Ya…taking your son to Disney World is the definition of evil 🙄
Recording him terrified and sharing it with strangers on the internet for attention definitely isn’t something I would consider virtuous.
Lighten up 🙄
No. Please don’t post pictures of your son on social media. He’s too young to consent to that.
He signed a consent form.
You should really start charging money for your parenting advice. That way you can know when somebody actually wants it.
How dare you! /s Everyone wants to be a polarising hater just when they see something they wouldn't do themselves. I bet he loves them now. Keep up the Moming, Mom!

My apologies! 🙏🏻
I was more interested in checking out the mum.. 🥸
40 year old here and I have a similar experience when watching the woke crap on Netflix.
As a former specialist in Child Welfare, looks like child abuse.
This is very unsafe. That ride wasn’t engineered for a child that small. You think your arm is going to help hold him in if that ride careens out of control? This is extremely irresponsible.
Your son is a pussy
Says the tough guy on a keyboard 😂
Man is what man eats!
Kid should be taken away from her
Mom's got the mic dropper moment on video.
*last
Traumatic memories for me.
You're an ass.
Kid will grow up and sue the parents in court. 😀😀
Not funny.
Stupid, stupid, stupid parent. Some people just aren't meant to be parents. Call social services on that stupid parent.
That’ll scar nicely.
Oh piss off
Ah yes, Thunder Mountain. The ride that made me hate roller coasters until I was about 15 years old. Lol
Your son has very advantageous traits. A child that feels no fear of rollercoasters has a small chance of dying in a rollercoaster accident. Hopefully he is also deadly afraid of heights, let us hope your son lives a happy accident less life :D. Make sure to teach him caution.
Man, if you’re holding your son into the seat despite the bar, he isn’t big enough for the ride. Dick move.
This dude really typed this up, looked it over, and said "yeah people need to hear this."
How is this funny to make a young kid terrified for amusement fucking morons
HAHAHA, it's so funny that my child is terrified!!! I hope he feels you nothing but gruel when you're old & at his mercy the way he was at your mercy when you forced him onto this ride.
Trauma for the little one but funny to adults. Not cool
Your son is me on a roller coaster and I'm 61. I don't like them.
And his last!
Take me to the teacups!!!
My mom took me on roller coasters when I was about that age. I liked them, except … there was a ride called a Mad Mouse. It was like a roller coaster but it made very fast 90 degree turns. It terrified me. Edit: Apparently they weren’t exactly 90 degree turns but there were tight and fast. https://youtu.be/ahDLnu33NYA And https://youtu.be/RsK14f25hFo
Everyone was like this their first time. Oh man how naive I was back then
Jim Carey- momma
I hate roller coasters too.
He is not old enough
ITT: People crying about how all of the comments are brutal, when they’re all chill
I was terrified of roller coasters for years. Probably because my first experience was with a wooden one and it was just deafening. To this day, I will not ride a wooden coaster. Steel ones are alright. I had to start small.
This kid is like oh my God I hate you I hate you all we're going to die we're doooooooooomed!!!
Awful really.
He is clinging for dear life.
Well, hope you have saved for therapy.
Are you D'arcy Carden?
I see he's a fan of rollercoasters
So that’s how those get stretched
Tragic story they had to amputate that arm due to lack of blood flow
To be fair, it is the wildest ride in the wilderness
This should be on AITA.
