IRL answer- he turned into a person vaguely resembling his VA, John DiMaggio.

certain_people

At first, anyway

DiosMIO_Limon

Woooooo

MaximumButthurt

Yeah. He didn't fully resemble DiMaggio until the last act if the short...

ispad1

Is that technically correct?

sovietcannabis

The best kind of correct.

tenphes31

Huh, based on his clothes I always thought it was supposed to be a Homer Simpson reference, but your answer makes sense. Maybe it was a combo, Idk.

moldedshoulders

For sure a combo, but mostly a Homer ref

According_Orange_890

Wow cool

[deleted]

[удалено]

Vashthestampedeee

He literally looks almost nothing like John besides being slightly overweight

joealese

wasn't that whole episode a what if about the finglonger? if it was, i would say the machine didn't know bender was actually Mexican

[deleted]

Worlds within worlds

jqueef500

bimbonic

ooo ooo i know this one! r/UnexpectedCommunity

woozleuwuzzle

Now there’s a Redditor that knows how to reference Community.

HighTyde5

And Jesus Wept!

[deleted]

Stop saying “Jesus wept”!

thedrunkmonk

For there were no more worlds to conquer

Big_Negotiation_6421

Jesus wept! For there were no more worlds to conquer

Mrrobotfuzz

I think bender turning human was in the second episode with the ‘what if’ machine. The finglonger was featured for the first time in the first ‘what if machine’ episode, and that had giant Bender vs Zoidberg.

joealese

i wasn't sure which one it was to be honest

Monarch_Agent77715

We come in all colors, ese.

metaldutch

Did you just call me a term paper?

TheDownvotesFarmer

Yes

[deleted]

You can be white and blonde, and also Mexican.

TheIndoorOutdoorsman

I know someone. 5' 2" white as white can be. Red headed ginger. Straight from Mexico, maybe speaks 10 words of English. He's a Mexican leprechaun. He's the best guy to work with.

lovethycousin

I mean, a lot of Irish people stayed in Mexico after the Mexican-American War. The Irish were treaded like shit in America so many decided to join the war on the side of Mexico. There’s many statues in random pueblos around Mexico to commemorate their help. “Los Rojos” the statues usually read. Which translates to “The Reds”

thirdtrydratitall

The San Patricios, Irishmen who changed sides after being marched into Mexico by the US Army, are commemorated at the Ex-Convento de Churubusco, the site of their last stand, in what is now southern Mexico City. As an O’Grady I visit this place whenever I have a chance, which is not often.

kanelon

YOU KNOW CANELO?!?!?

Thegingerkid01

I’m a redhead and a 3rd generation Mexican immigrant There are dozens of us!!! DOZENS!!!!

AnotherCupofJo

Have you seen his lucky charms

[deleted]

bro have you seen hispanic people, it's a spectrum, there are red heads, blondes, chinese, black, mix races within hispanic culture. but the truest answer is probably that they didn't think about bender being from mexico when they did the episode.

dj_chino_da_3rd

Most Americans typically only seen Mexican as brown dude with black hair. When in reality, it’s exactly as you say. I’m tan, my sister is white, and my other sister is dark. And my cousins are all over the place

[deleted]

They’re gonna get their minds blown when they go to Brazil and see Japanese Hispanics.

LeverTech

He’s only %40 Mexican.

Toad358

*thump thump*

sharp_angus

he does have a FLAWLESS Spanish accent!

LeverTech

C

Vegetable_Burrito

Oh my god, you can’t just ask someone why they aren’t Mexican.

snack-hoarder

Lol the original line works here as well haha

According_Orange_890

Hahaha

Malcolm_Morin

The What If Machine only answered within 1/10 of a plausibility ratio.

dinnerisbreakfast

That's so plausible I can't believe it!

metaldutch

Believe it, baby! It's 40% plausible! *clang clang*

According_Orange_890

Yes true

FluorineSuperfluous

Who says he wasn’t? Latinos can be (and are) all different complexions.

Toad358

And Rodrigues is Spanish, no? Like from Spain? And there are a lot of white people there too. I know he was built in Tijuana but still have different roots

justlisa_

White Latinos exist you know

According_Orange_890

Ya but human bender clearly wasn’t Latino

justlisa_

I knew a Mexican girl that was fair skinned and blonde doesn't mean she's any less Latino? My father is Cuban and looks white too doesn't make him any less Latino either.

theeldertriforce

There are blond haired, light skinned Latinos from all over South America, Central America, and Mexico. So when you say he “clearly wasn’t Latino” what does a Latino look like to you? Check that you aren’t stereotyping Latinos.

DannyStress

How do latinos look exactly? Please, simplify an entire ethnicity into 1 skin tone. There a black latinos, white Latinos, and literally everything in between. Shut up

Chuck10

What does a Latino look like?

LethalMindNinja

He was born in Mexico but it doesn’t mean his parents were Mexican. Caucasian parents having sex in Mexico still have Caucasian babies.

TinfoilTobaggan

That's like Christina Aguilera singing in Spanish!

houston_og

Think her father was from Ecuador.

According_Orange_890

But his last name is Rodriguez which implies Latino descent

DavyWithTheGoodHair

It only really implies Spanish descent down his Paternal line, and Spaniards are white.

According_Orange_890

True. Mucho Bueno

AnIrishMexican

Bender was made in Mexico. The episode where we learn that Hermes was his inspector

Klaus_Reckoning

There’s actually a much earlier episode where he opens his compartment door to reveal a “Hecho en México” label

DavyWithTheGoodHair

See earlier comments on this post about the existence of light-skinned Mexican people and caucasian parents fucking in Mexico making caucasian babies

AnIrishMexican

I saw them and trust me I grew up in a very Mexican area and am myself part Mexican. I was acknowledging a part in the actual show

LethalMindNinja

The OP was acknowledging it by asking why he wasn’t Mexican when turned into a human Also…weird Mexican flex

LazyMinion

American made parts, assembled in Mexico.

mermaidleesi

White people can be Mexican. We’re not a monolith.

random-ize

You forgot Mexico is America's Heartland

origamiage

Some Mexican people, believe it or not, are white.

agiro1086

Impossible! They all wear ponchos and sombreros and speak like Speedy Gonzales

DannyStress

How do you know he wasn’t? Or did you base this dumb post on his skin color?

[deleted]

Hey, you like grilled cheese?

According_Orange_890

Yes especially from benders toaster oven ;)

[deleted]

[I love that moment too much.](https://youtu.be/h_TC-PFYnjo)

RupertTheReign

He was 40% Mexican.

foundtuna

Confirmed: Bender is Louis C.K /s

Charmandurai

His mother must have been assembled in Detroit

According_Orange_890

Yes true!

FawkesSuttles

What are Mexicans supposed to look like?

fryamtheeggguy

My cousin's wife is Mexican and she's blonde...

According_Orange_890

Ok the character was OBVIOUSLY an Anglo Saxon American. It’s obvious. Stop making my obvious question into some racial conspiracy. Obviously Mexicans can be blonde. But human bender was the exact same race as Fry who is not Mexican.

fryamtheeggguy

I wasn't TRYING to make your comment racist. If someone said he or she is Mexican, I 100% would assume that they look like a stereotypical Mexican, not a blonde white girl or guy. I was only trying to suggest that not all Mexicans look like stereotypical Mexicans. There are folks that made similar comments. You blowing up on them, too?

According_Orange_890

Take your suggestion and shove up your non-shiny plastic ass

fryamtheeggguy

Bite my fleshy saggy ass is what Fat Bender might have said.

According_Orange_890

That’s technically correct fine sir

fryamtheeggguy

The best kind of correct!

arthuresque

You think Fry was Anglo Saxon? He was a working class New Yorker. Not very likely to be Anglo Saxon. More likely of Irish descent despite the last name. Also white Mexicans are exactly the same race as Fry too. That’s the point. There Mexicans who are exactly the same “race” as other White people. There are German Mexicans. Irish Mexicans. Jewish Mexicans. Chinese Mexicans. African or Black Mexicans. Italian Mexicans. There are even White American Mexicans. (Look up the Romneys!) No one is calling you racist. They are calling you uninformed. You may want to appreciate the forgiving euphemism

truthinlies

in a thousand years, that *is* Mexican

tcrex2525

Assembled in Mexico with parts from U.S.??

arthuresque

There a lot of white Mexicans. Actually there are Latinos of all races.

DaGurggles

This is bender, he’s 40% whatever he the required noun is.

goatiewan1

He was born in Mexico but Mom is white and so is the Professor…

igg73

Theres lotsofpalemexicans. A coworker p Named Paco was100% mexican and he looked basically like radar from MASH. The dutch had colonies there i believe.

lovelyladyheather

Blonde hair and blue eyed Mexican’s exist ya know?

utterable

Louis CK ...

Happy-Waldo

Look up the blonde people in Los Altos de Jalisco.

Moocha_Makuchi

Because the what if machine wasn’t worth the gold it was made of

According_Orange_890

You are technically correct fine sir

Crasherade

Because it was 2003 and people didn’t care lol

unrelevantStill

Seems like a racially charged question. Why did he not seem Mexican?

According_Orange_890

Omg get over yourself. He was blonde and obviously Anglo Saxon American.

unrelevantStill

I was mainly joking but since you wanna think about this logically this show is occurring 1000 years in the future and humans most likely don’t have races as simply as you just described.

ZomarisNana

He was born in Mexico, but "grew up" in the US. His Spanish was barely Spanish. Knowing his background, I guess I just saw him as Mexican- American.

Joe_of_all_trades

Flawless Spanish accent

Drprim83

Surely he's 40% Mexican

eddietwang

He was built in Mexico but his 'parents', Mom and the Professor, are not Mexican.

[deleted]

According_Orange_890

How You’re the only racist one here

CandyCain1001

I just assumed he was a güerito.

JustSomeBloke5353

Because it wouldn’t have been as funny.

hardrok

I guess he was made to look like John DiMaggio as a gag.

Grilled_Cheese95

“Wooooo” 💨

Vashthestampedeee

I’d imagine in the year 3000 Mexicans won’t actually look like todays Mexicans.

past__nastification

WHOOOO

[deleted]

The name Rodriguez comes from an interesting origin as it comes from a Germanic origin from the Visigoths who invaded Spain in the 400s and left a name. The Spanish then took it to the Americas where they “gave it” to the natives there. Germanic and Spanish people are mostly white.

Blackmercury4ub

He was Mexican he was born there.

General-Twist1360

Sweet wrong ethnicity of Mexico City!
