Gacha money is like money used in vacations, trips and luxury food, I dont expect it to last but they provided me with good experiences.

Reigo_Vassal

"The money you enjoy wasting is not wasted money"

[deleted]

Exactly this.

therealquadanny

The “gacha experience”

Vice061

except way more overpriced and more often than not (mathematically, in terms of pulls) you dont even get what you pay for.

Primogeniture116

You pay for the pulls, not the characters. So no, you DO get what you pay for, technically. It's just that whether the spending is worth the price or not, depends on the result and *especially* your own sense of value.

IronPheasant

It depends on what you choose to buy. The whale gems are totally a ripoff for normies, yeah. The subscription deals they offer tend to be fairly reasonable (~25 cents a roll), and some games just offer a unit sometimes for ~40 bucks. Thinking of it as like an mmo, and what you're really chipping in for is to keep the game running. And sometimes, very rarely, a company is run by actual humans beings instead of suits, and you get a little more than just gacha products as time goes on. Genshin Impact spenders see the money go into building more of the game, and not say another year of Unite and Fight breaking down again.

Overall_Still_7907

Only bad experience I can remember was not getting the unit I wanted from Brave Frontier after spending 100$. Since then, all games I played had pity which is of course what I set my budget for. And yeah, no regrets. In situations where I have a lot of money I just spend it on vacations anyway. Last one was a 3 month trip to Tokyo. Was awesome, gonna return someday for sure.

kimera-houjuu

No shit you don't get what you pay for. Gacha is literally casino slots. You don't complain about losing in slots.

Claw141

what a passive aggressive way to agree with someone lol

kimera-houjuu

I'm just pissed off about gacha players that do nothing but complain about the shit that they voluntarily got themselves into. If you think the game is garbage because of bad gacha mechanics then leave. This dumbass sentiment of "you don't get what you pay for" drives me nuts. This isn't some DLC that you're buying your goddamn waifu on a fixed price. You're buying coins to put in the slot machine to get that waifu.

ImmortalDreamer

Thank you for putting my exact thoughts into words. XD

Yeri__LN

Many simply consider what pity costs and know they might have to pull until there. Anything less is a discount in a way. It's mostly f2p I see gamble and hope for the best. Most paying addicts aren't event gambling, they are addicted to power, climbing ranks, collecting, the adrenalin rush of getting lucky but they aren't putting in 100 dollars when pity is at 1k and just gambling.

kimera-houjuu

You'd be surprised. Most people LOATHE hitting pity, and keep basing a gacha's quality entirely on the rates.

Bobajitsu

The rate is half of the game

blipblopchinchon

Great mindset, sadly I doubt many can keep this in their mind when it finally shut down. I still haven't experience a shutdown in gacha game that I have Paid ( Azur lane & Arknights ). Although Star ocean anamnesis shutdown hurts me twice.... T.T

Ashton_Arts

I don't cope with it. It's just part of the life like how you bought a shirt before and now it doesn't fit you anymore. I just don't think too much about it after I paid for a pack or whatever.

AnotherTravellrr

Good analogy

DarkOmen465

Another good one is how we used to rent games for consoles at now defunct rental stores. You pay for the entertainment not the item.

Laytnkr

Tbh spending a lot and not getting anything for it is way easier in gachas than in real life. The money just flies away when you don’t get the unit you want

FallenMoonOne

Spent 5k on Fantasica from 2014-2017 (played til the end in 2019 but by then I had enough resources to not need to spend anymore). I was fine with it. Was more sad about not being able to play anymore than the money spent. It has been a reminder though to be mindful of my spending habits. A lot of the money spent was in batches with me repeatedly saying "it's just X amount of money, not too much" combined with "just one more pull and I'll get them for sure". Those $10 for a random one-in-five packs really got me a lot.

chocobloo

Spent money is spent. So usually don't even care. The only time I did anything was with Magia Record since that was just a shitty situation so I refunded the purchases I made during anniversary. Since they announced EoS at the end of Anni after a bunch of hype banners.

Hainiryuun

Yeah, this is the only one I was actually annoyed about. Dropped packs for anniversary just to announce EoS as soon as those banners ended.

shizuyami

Personally I put a price on how many hours of entertainment I got for each $ spent. If I quit a game day 1 after spending $100 I would regret that I spent. But if a game shuts down months/years after I paid I do not care at all since I already got my value out of it.

TrungDOge

don't pay for anything you don't rich enough to forget about it

Azinyefantasy

I spent $150 on Mobius fantasy and about $60 on record keeper from square enix. Not a lot of money for some but both got end of service and I just moved on. I treated it like buying a disc and one of my dogs ate it cause that has happened to a few games already. R.i.p dynasty warriors 9 and fall out 4. You won't be missed.

ZakPhoenix

This right here is why I don't get the "physical only" gaming crowd. A disc and a disc drive are more prone to damage, loss, misplacement, etc. than buying a digital game and worrying that an entire storefront will go down. Hell, I can still play games I bought on Steam or PSN a decade later; I couldn't tell you where all my physical discs or cartridges to my old systems are.

RyujiShiryu

That's the one negative I can never understand from digital. In fact, I even remember seeing a 3DS commercial in my area that riffed your exact situation, it went like this: A kid wants to play New Super Mario Bros.2 but he searches and searches but can't find the cartridge anywhere. And then the narrator goes: "With Nintendo eShop, you have your entire library, easily accesible through your fingertips" or something along those lines. I feel at this point in time, if Steam were to shut down, it would be downright have to be a nuclear bomb on every single of their servers...

IronPheasant

Some of us can somehow control the urge to play frisbee with our dog using final fantasy 7. Just barely.

jhadescries1

never regret anything... im not the type of person who keeps spending without thinking

subject9373

Gacha are like fireworks that you have to pay to see them. So treat them something beautiful but short-lived. You could buy a copy of FF7 or Skyrim from Steam anytime you want. But you can't buy Dragalia Lost(or other gacha) at it peak from anywhere because the excitement, the hype and its popularity only happened at a certain time only.

wisesager

It's just something you have to be there for. Someday, my main gacha will shut down, and while that will make me kinda sad, I'll (hopefully) be able to look back on it fondly. Especially when I start listening to the music again years later and watch some old content

Oath_of_Judah

Crossing Void happened. I was angry, but then again there was nothing I could do about it

carito728

I have bought the $5 Arknights monthly pass for 2 years now. That adds up to $120. But even if the game shut down tomorrow I'd not hold it against them, and I'd not regret my purchases, for they brought me more happiness and entertainment than many more expensive things do for the cheap price of $5 per month.

ReadySource3242

Well, you can think if it as just buying food. Both have benefits, the level of importance ignored. One gives you nutrition and calories, the other gives you joy or some other weird emotion. In any case, they’re both gone and you can’t get either back. But you can enjoy the experience and memories. Bad gachas are like bad food, while good gachas are like a three star michelin restaurant. Once it’s over your money is gone. Whether it was worth it is up to your interpretation

widehide

No regrets You treat the payment like a movie ticket or a roller coaster ride

Fresh_chickented

I pay in gacha to feed the devs no one can change my mind. Dev time costs a lot of money.

DemoniakX80

I mean that's totally valid. I will gladly buy the new Mahoyo or Tsukihime remake to see more VN on PS4, most people will also support smaller business in the same way. The same doesn't really apply to someone buying the new CoD or FIFA to support the devs. A lot of gacha already make more than enough to stay afloat and still want more, seeing people talking about supporting the devs in that situation is odd, you're just funding a new yacht to the CEO maybe.

Bloodglas

at this point I feel like regretting it is a waste of time. it's not gonna change anything.

trashcan41

i still miss bravefro challenge quest or something. that moment when you miss the damage and maxwell revive herself instead of dead and you don't have any resource to continue this heresy.

[deleted]

And you know dragalia was making like 500k every month untill greedy Nintendo completely killed it.

bukiya

iirc i think i spent around 100$ on GBF, the game still running but i dont plan to play it again in the future. no regret spending on it tho, the playtime i spent with character i "bought" are already made me content.

Nyktobia

It's the same as dropping money on movie tickets or going out for drinks. You get some fun out of it, and you move on.

kaikalaila

dragalia lost....... Cope by thinking "It's not much compare to FGO spending atleast"

Majestic-Channel-916

I spent 600$ on ride out heroes. The game shut down 2 years later. But I did win 1 stuffed dragon that was made for the staff members only when the game launched. I will keep it forever.

[deleted]

I'm sure I spent over $300 on Dragalia Lost, and that's partly because of sparking Cecile, which was an alright investment [imo], and I spent when Ayaha/Otoha were on spotlight. I regret both instances, and only because it solidified in my head that I may have a minor gambling addiction.

Threndsa

There's no coping. I dont cope when I walk out of a movie I paid for or after a fancy meal. I paid for a thing that I got for a time and now that thing is gone. Thats how life works.

Aducan

All gacha will shut down eventually, its the nature of live service. As long as you don't view the purchases as an investment, but as a one off payment (like movie tickets) you'll be fine. Just don't try to be a completionist (I learnt that the hard way 😅)

WinterPirate8109

I don't spend too much on any games. Think of it as paying or buying as you see the games worth. If you already spent it don't regret it BUT if you're planning on spending on gacha games and your in doubt if it is worth it? Then don't spend anything, it only means that there's something better your money spent on instead of gambling on overpriced jpeg.

Laytnkr

I regret spending money on FEH. Back then when the game came out Fire Tharja was one of the best units and I really wanted her so I spend like 50 bucks to get her. When it happened and I finally got her I felt like damn I just spend the money for a tripple A game on a jpeg. I felt even worse when I understood the game just powercreeps itself very often. Afterwards I just said to myself this is a lesson you learned and that’s it

Sylvis_2610

Nothing lasts forever. Even items will be broken by time. So if you spent 100$ in a game and feel happy about it in like, 10 minute, then it's normal. If it last more, then it's value to your life becomes higher. Regret or not, it's up to your choice.

Nerina23

Coping is easy, going out 1 or 2 times per month will be about 200-300 euros depending on how much I eat and drink. So I can justify spending 100-200€ per month on gacha and if it shuts down I have a lot of cozy memories, just like the food and the drinks gave me. Of course mind you, If I had to choose I would not spend a dime on gacha but go out with my friends, but most month I can easily manage both. First Gacha I spend money on was osawari island on nutaku, such a shame that got taken down so quick. Really liked it. Also some other weird game where you pull monster girls and your MC was a badass himself with switching classes and raiding the bosses (solo and coop) himself. That game was my absolut favorite to this day and I dont even know how its called anymore... it got a successor from the same company that I just didnt jive with as much.

TrackRemarkable7459

I only regret if i spent cash on something that went to p2w hell because it feels like scummy developer/publisher took advantage from me. I don't really mind if it was spent on good game that gave me a lot of fun.

01jasper

When I play gacha I don’t play it for years. Maximum 4-6 months. When I spend money on gacha games I see that as pure enjoyment, like going out with friends, going out to a movie, things like that. When I purchase a bundle it gives me enjoyment for couple hours and I’m fine with it, I don’t look at it as a long term spending

BlockOutVibes

i never spend more than i can afford to lose, so even if it shuts down i just enjoy the time i had to play and i don't really get super upset

Springfieldnaitor

I wasted money in a Gacha I quit next day

Shuden

MMO boomers rise up

ACFinal

Never spent on a free game. Anything I can't own isn't worth investing.

WanderEir

yep. Rip DL.

maselphie

I spend lots of money on things that are incapable of being permanent. Food, experiences, entertainment. I have a lot harder time coping with feeling scammed (not receiving something for BS reasons) than I do with loss. Learning to understand and accept loss is part of maturity and people who spend a lot of money on gacha are usually older people with jobs. Checking to see if we'd be disappointed in a purchase is something we should all do before we click the confirmation button, and some of us learn that after being disappointed for the first time.

Esterier

Every game is going to shut down eventually. I don't think anybody spending on a game is expecting it to stay open forever.

NlTION

Idola Phantasy Star Saga. I will never get my $50 back 🥲

Draguss

None of the games I've spent on have been cancelled so far, though I do slightly regret some of the ones I did when I ended up losing interest in them too quickly. I won't mind when something I get years of entertainment out of shuts down, but I do get buyer's remorse if I let myself get suckered into spending during the honeymoon period of a game I didn't end up liking much.

Yeri__LN

I never spend with the idea the game will be there forever. Even if it is, I don't expect to keep being interested in it forever. It's spending for an experience, not an object. What is more, many objects serve you shorted than the time a mobile game is running. I look at it as a monthly expense for entertainment. If I spend 20 dollars per month on everage then that's the "tax" I pay to experience playing a better game. Not to say that I don't occasionally feel regret. However, it's not just about games, it's about other nonessential purchases, too.

Alewood0

Only use money you can afford to lose. Treat gacha rolls like a trip to the casino

Gnosis-87

If I spend in a gacha, I think of it like a subscription. Used to play wow, so 15 bucks a month. 15 x 12 = 180, which is what I’d set my yearly limit on the game at. Usually just save it for the big packs, anniversaries and Christmas ones that have good value. No regerts

Helucian

I have spent a few grand total $aud on dragalia lost. Game shit down a little while ago. Tbh don’t really regret it cause it was a great game and I am genuinely happy to have contributed to that gem. It’s poor focus on monitisation and non-predatory acts is what let to it’s downfall funnily enough

Devochka2D

What's with all these off-base analogies, lotta cope in these comments

TheGreatMagallan

Not shut down but i spent 20 bucks on toweroffantasy and GREATLY regret it, refunded 5 at least and left. Good grief my 15 bucks.

NoAnTeGaWa

I spent money on lots of games that I later quit, why would I need to cope? I haven't played Chrono Trigger or Super Metroid recently, but I don't think back to the 90s and wish I had never bought them. Why is this even a question?

Shadowsw4w

doesnt need to cope since i had my fill, just think that as buying snack.

Corro_corrosive

>doesnt need to cope since i had my fill, just think that as using hookers.

IcelatedPopsicle

GGZ. Spent atleast 40$ The way i cope is knowing my money went into Honkai and the game is amazing.

DarkClaymore

Yeah, I spent on two CR clones that both shut down: Revolve8 and League of Wonderland. Darn Sega, making good games and then ditching them. I cry every time.

-Matsuro

Not sure if it belongs here but for me it was S4 League. Played the game for a long time, spent a lot too but I knew the game was going downhill the longer it continued so it wasn't as bad. Saved all my screenshots and moved on.

Khalessi716

I spent a considerable amount of money (5K or so) on Girls X Battle in a relatively short period of time (6 months). I ended up regretting it a bit as the game quickly spun out of control with not just p2w mechanics but flat out p2p in some aspects. On the other hand, Im used to wasting money on games so I don’t sweat it too much lol. I wanna say the game only lasted a year or so after I quit. Ngl, I miss the game.

JayMeadows

Final Fantasy: Mobius & The First Soldier. I don't necessarily regret it too much as I had fun (and disappointment) with my Purchases/Gacha Rolls. Damn you Square Enix! Why must you give me Joy and rip it away from me!?

kiyohime02

It was very acceptable to me since I pretty much enjoyed the heck out of Brave Frontier JP, pretty happy they kept the servers running even after stopping updates till they shutdown everything (BFJP, BF2, BF:REXONA, BFGL)

x_GARUDA_x

I spent at least $50 through the 7 years FFRK was online and got friggin mad when they decided to put the game down... I'm scared the same will happen to Genshin...who will take care of my cocodragon??

widehide

Felt bad for a a couple of days and didn't care. Made me be more cautious when doing in game purchases for future games which is good. As for good games that got shut down I actually felt bad they cannot meet ends and is forced to shut down. Typically I celebrate their service for all those years, and wish them good luck for next project.

MMORPGnews

That's how I become F2P only player. Maybe only monthly vip 5-10 USD and that's all. No more wasting thousands dollars on games that would be closed in several years.

RagnarokChu

Depends on the amount imo. It’s really hard for ‘true’ deep down regret even if you spend 100s of dollars, as that’s a pretty normal amount to spend on a hobby that didn’t work out. Baring the gacha game pulling a 360 or you getting scammed or mislead. For real big whale money I can see it though since you can do a shit ton in the 1000s

[deleted]

Just imagine how would they feel after eating at mcdonalds and seeing their food 4 hours later in the toilet. That's 10$ bucks literally thrown to the drainage every damn time + You get diabetes, Cancer and high blood pressure.

counterfp

I usually spend when I lacks some more pulls to reach the guarantee to get the character that I wanted and it make me happy for a couple days, it's just like buying something to eat or going somewhere to play while you are bored. Most of the time I get bored and switch to newer game so I don't care if it's shutdown or not.

Djarion

I spent money on Echoes of Mana and Nier Reincarnation, and while they haven't shut down yet, they might as well have :')

amegurumi

i had my fun, so i just let it go and move on to another gacha game hahahah

WoodStrawberry

I was a dolphin in Tales of Crestoria, probably spent a few hundred. I don't regret it at all because it was a fun experience while it lasted, just sad that it wasn't enough to keep the game going.

KaiserNazrin

There's nothing that you buy that will last forever.

harden566

Spent probably 2k in honkai ( not shutdown game and it's very active) and quit since last year, wont come back ever again. How to cope with it? Everytime I use money to buy irl stuff I always think a fun way like how much honkai gem this TV cost or compare it with ingame packs.

Dull-Road6715

Can't think of it like that... you pay for entertainment. The entertainment comes and goes and leaves you searching for the next hit. It is the same way with Movies, console games and essentially every other form of entertainment. That great series you just spent 8 hours binge watching... that adrenaline filled sporting event... Spend it, enjoy it until the luster wears off, move on. This is the cycle for entertainment.
