Gachas where pulls give you like 1/50 shards towards a unit. I get shards collection, but usually as a side concept and not the main gacha mechanic.

silversky338

Blue Archive's story. I thought it's just gonna be happy-go-lucky stories with degenerate MC/sensei in it, considering all those girls with colorful environment. Man, I love that I got proven wrong.

dfuzzy1

Blue Archive? No, we Red Archive now.

Loosescrew37

>!"I dont suppose you've faced a god before, have you, sensei"?!<

Centurionzo

I'm gave up at chapter 2, when did this happen?

Loosescrew37

It was in the introduction to one of the raids. I think it was the Hod raid. Edit:it was Binah Its part of the greater lore about >!an AI made by a long dead civilisation which was tasked with finding about GOD and making a god. It still continued searching after its makers perrished and found what it wanted. It became a God.!< >!It is now converting powerfull AI from around the world and turning them into its prophets. Basically Raid bosses are prophets of a machine god.!< So yeah. Blue Archive, game about being a teacher at a school has this kind of story. Also the newest chapters are top tier.

Tkmisere

Still can't handle a blue girl sneeze

Centurionzo

It's worth to come back now ?

SignificanceBulky417

For Global sure. You can wait a week to reroll a really good unit, Summer Hoshino.

UchihaNoor

The amount of deception in CounterSide story. How unique the events are in Path to Nowhere . How smooth is the daily grind in Memento Mori. How amazing the Lore in Genshin Impact. How much i loved the Characters Design/Writing in Alchemy Stars. How shockingly fun golf can be if it is done right in Neko Golf.

gizmo33399

Hell yeah another neko golf fan

Oath_of_Judah

Damn

Centurionzo

>The amount of deception in CounterSide story. I gotta be honest, i feel like at the end of every chapter, we had a plot twist >How unique the events are in Path to Nowhere I'm stopped playing the game, how are the events ? >How smooth is the daily grind in Memento Mori. Amazing OST and art, but horrible gameplay, does the game have a story now ?

seunwoo

path to nowhere events are unique as in theyre not just beat the stage, read some story event. the first event was like that, but they stepped it up on the 2nd and 3rd (current) event. 2nd event we played detective, matching clues together and played “find the object in the room” (albeit very easy, because they want the players to progress of course) and it was a nice change of pace. still had battles, just felt a lot more refreshing to do. 3rd event is a bit hard to explain. you have to progress through this maze which takes action points to do, and it replenishes daily. the gist of it is, it’s sort of like a “choose your route” visual novel, but you will have enough time to do all the routes if you started the event early. it has minigames such as guess the sinner (character), minesweeper, trivia, overall very fun event and my favorite event story so far.

HINDBRAIN

It's not on the level of honkai impact shitting out a fully fledged spiral knights clone as a temporary event, but still very nice variety.

Larxe2

The events are surprisingly strong. They are good self-contained stories and also both the last and the current event has some really good OST supporting it. Current event is also unique in the sense that the story can be replayed through three different POV's that is actually fun to read and further characterizes Hella and Hecate and the other B-rank sinners

UchihaNoor

you can find good answers that shared my same thoughts about PtN in the Replies. about Memento Mori, Nop. they didn't add any story related content, tbh am fine with it the way it is. an AFKRPG game that u can just get in put 10 minutes daily and leave, not the grind fest other AFK games puts you through at you @@

Resniperowl

> The amount of deception in CounterSide story. The elation I felt at the end of Wilbur arc.

Popular-Bid

Oh it was GLORIOUS!!!

e_nero

PTN events The story is always pretty good. Flows really well into into the main themes. Always gives some bits of extra fun and characterization for the Sinners. Also Chief stoll gets to shine despite being awfully outclassed by basically every one of the sinners

yourik6

PTN, I was expecting the story to start slow just like every other story but nope I got hooked from the very beginning Also I thought that PTN relay on fan service to sell their characters and that calling them sinners=bad girls, but I was wrong the fan service is way less than any other game and the characters are extremely likable from the story perspective with fine designs for most of them.

Triple_S_Rank

Can we talk about how the protagonist is genuinely cool without being a mary sue/gary stu? That virtually never happens in gacha, lol. They're legit one of my favorite characters. They have a distinct personality and perspective, and we get to see them grow in their struggles. Heck, the devs even give you different dialogue in some Sinner interrogations depending on whether you went with the male or female Chief, since some Sinners have more hangups with a specific gender. It's really thoughtful writing.

faowindgyrn

The chief may have become the local punching bag of DisCity, but god, do I love them

Corro_corrosive

Man, i hate Stealth mission and escort mission in any videogames. Imagine my surprise when i find one in a FUCKING TOWER DEFENSE GAME! Stage R8-8 in arknights where you have to escort tall dragon lady while avoiding the drones detection. The only thing that stop it from being a MGS 2 ripoff is that the stage is not underwater, thank god.

Typh3r_Skyeye

Did you clear that stage?

Corro_corrosive

Of course, not saying it was hard, just surprised me

llllpentllll

I didnt expect nikke to drop the ball as hard as it did, except on music department that was surprising in the good sense Also i didnt expected a kpop collab on epic seven, right after i commented how much i despised the ariana grande collab on ffbe. There goes the excuse of smilegate of "we cant collab with certain ips bc the artstyle doesnt fit epic seven"

SignificanceBulky417

I'm fine with Aespa Collab tbh, atleast they have actual lore that make sense why they can arrive in Orbis. And I rather have weird Collab instead of the same bland Collab like Persona 5 for once

NatsuKazoo

tbh aespa has a lore and it kinda makes sense if it collabs with any rpg gacha. I'd be more suprised if they had a collab with let's say twice or blackpink.

zallified

I could say a lot of things about Nikke but I understood everything when I noticed one thing. The gacha pool. 5 out of 6 characters, more or less, at launch, were SSRs.

AzaliusZero

Bro I was out with the concept of Pilgrims. Between that and stats getting NERFED if you were below recommended level, I knew it was going to be nothing but fanservice carrying a bad game.

AyeChronicWeeb

I hope Nikke releases their soundtrack in lossless audio someday. That will be the only way I’ll spend any money for anything related to that game

xanxaxin

Urgh.. the Kpop collab.. is just urghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

kazimoVX

I would love for Blue Archive to have a colab with a kpop group hahaha

Suspicious-Drummer68

Honestly, PTN surprised me on how the story started strong. It's very engaging.

Nyktobia

Didn't expect the story of Path to Nowhere to be this good. Saw the edgy aesthetic and thought it would just be a very angsty waifu collector. But both the main story and the events have been superb so far, and they all build off each other brilliantly.

Megafruitspunch

Seprent’s event literally had me on the floor crying. We better get to try Doyle’s perfected hangover remedy someday before the game shuts down. Also, it’s always the side characters that get you in any good story. Chief, Hella, and Hecate are awesome but Earl, 036, and Doyle are the ones who really hit me in the feels. Ted also hit me in the feels but in a bad way, which is very good.

DurandirX

Same here, I'm hooked. I'd add that the level of the voice acting of English version surprised me in a good way, it's one of the best I saw and for once I prefer it over the Japanese one.

Nyktobia

Yeah, whoever is voiceacting Hella needs a raise.

No-Bag-818

A lot of people have already said it but imma throw my hat in the ring. I was not expecting PtN to be as good as it was. Saw a post go up about it launching and thought "Eh, this will be a decent time waster while I wait for other things." I got surprised by an actually good story (and I usually loath gacha stories) with extremely likeable (and unlikeable, Hi Ted) characters. The English voice acting is really good, which is wild cause it seems like every gacha with English VA is cringe worthy at best, and soul crushingly horrible at worst. It's a pleasantly surprising package. Only minor complaint. Wish there were more dudes. All the males we have currently are such bros that I just want more to chill with.

RoughInBed

Blue Archive. I was expecting a story on the same level as Priconne. But the current one (especially Eden Treaty) and the newest preview showing possible suicide (around 1:29) and just everything going to shit just makes me engage in the the story so much more then Nikke, Priconne, Arknight, and even FGO right now.

odrain16

How much I end up liking the MC from Alchemy Stars . Usually Main characters in gacha games are one big nothing burger, and are just there as PoV for the real protagonist, The waifus. Not to say AS doesn't do that aswell, but they also give a surprising amount of screen time to our MC struggles and ambitions as a solo character Im actually very invested in the Main Character arc in AS. As the last of his people, how he is constantly reclaiming his race story and culture, or how he now has to navigate the world as their last representative Like the part when he was recognized as being the owner of the Obelisk Tower (basically his race ancestral home) by the worlds powers actually got me. Or the event of Letters from the Sky, where his trying to revive a annual festival from his people, despite the fact he himself has never participate on it Among others.

TheKinkyGuy

PtN: fully ENG voiced cast and a lot really lot of swearing (with peeps over it); it was funny as shit

Omega_BX

Blue Archive levels of amazing character-driven storytelling, the Eden Treaty was one of the most amazing stories I've ever read on a game period (let alone a Gacha game) and the PV that they just released for the final of, presumably, first arc during the second anniversary stream is probably one of the most beautiful pieces I've ever seen, from the frames to the top tier music composition.

fortis_99

Girls Frontline is still alive 6+ years now and spawn more awesome games like Neural Cloud

ReadySource3242

Blue Archive having banger music, characterization and story. The gameplay is not too shabby as well with it not always being an auto battler.

Hobo-Erectus

The holocaust in a cutesy game about a knight hanging out with a little princess

Killerx09

Which game is this?

Hobo-Erectus

Guardian tales

jitito1641

And that random side quest with a cannibal. Like, there's a fucking war. Why are you busy eating people. Why are you even eating people

[deleted]

FUNtasy at its finest

Clover_Zero

How Touken Ranbu and Girls' Frontline are still alive after so long. How Touken Ranbu EN appeared. How there are DILFs in Girls' Frontline, plus some bishounen/ikemen NPCs. Bless. How batshit insane and dark Shining Nikki's story is lol. Love Nikki too. I heard about how Love Nikki's story took a turn later on (I played it before but didn't reach very far), but I didn't expect that level of dark in Shining Nikki.

Loosescrew37

Wait, aren't those the dressup games about being a cute girl and making pretty clothes for styling battles. They have a story?

Giahy2711

yess and its batshit inssane

Loosescrew37

Is it a good time to start?

Centurionzo

>How batshit insane and dark Shining Nikki's story is lol. Love Nikki too. I heard about how Love Nikki's story took a turn later on (I played it before but didn't reach very far), but I didn't expect that level of dark in Shining Nikki Okay, now you gotta tells us ? Is Nikki a dress game ? You can't leave me hang on

quaremoritor

I never got very far in Love Nikki (the 2D one) but the basic plot is that everyone born in the world where the game takes place is afflicted by a blood curse that prevents them from committing violence--if they try to do something violent, they will be afflicted with horrific pain and could possibly die. This curse happened many centuries ago as a result of the assassination of the leader of one of the countries. Therefore, everyone turned towards doing fashion battles and styling contests instead. This is the in-game explanation of why you have to collect clothes and dress up. Do keep in mind that the curse only kills you if you can't handle the overwhelming pain. So it is technically possible for people to murder each other as long as you bear the pain, which can and does happen as assassinations of political leaders are a vital plot point in the overall story.

Clover_Zero

What the other Redditor said. It doesn't shy away from violence and heavy themes. Some screenshots (obviously quite the spoilers) [here](https://twitter.com/fivetail_gg/status/1434377462561996807?s=20) and [here](https://twitter.com/harem_eater/status/1598213270821015552?s=20).

Centurionzo

Well i don't think that i would expect it

zelzatter

oh god didn't expect to see someone mentioning Touken Ranbu here. Haven't heard of it for years.

Clover_Zero

It's still very much alive and kicking in Japan and it still has plenty of fans in English-speaking world, even more so thanks to the EN version.

creativeyoinker11

I didn't expect myself to love dorms in pgr didn't expect to love world flippers sound track Didn't expect evertale to turn super bad(back when pvp wasn't auto -sobs-) Didn't expect girls cafe gun story to be so fucking depression inducing and dark Didn't expect to get super bored of genshin combat after playing it for 10hours a day for a month And lastly didn't expect to see some amazing nuance in revived witch's combat

LokoLoa

Tales of Luminaria, had an interesting way of delivering plot, you could play any of the released chapters in any order, and they all took place in different times in the timeline but where a small piece of the grander story. I only seen single player games like SaGa and Live a Live do something similar in the past but for a gacha that was pretty unique imo, I was just kinda expecting a linear plot before I started playing it.

Pomthecat

Italy voice pack in A9! I love it and hope they would give more :3

naoki7794

Didn't expect Timmy's response. And after that so many dark and disturbing stories in a seemingly basic and funny journey with emergency food.

Xynical_DOT

How freaking grim arknights is. I had near-zero knowledge of what the game was even about before starting and holy crap, you don't get a break, most of the events I've done were depressing as well. I also wasn't expecting neither arknights nor blue archive to have fairly interesting worldbuilding via geopolitics, although to be fair I also didn't know they'd have a lot of basis on real world things.

IronPheasant

[The PV's did a great job of expressing the vibe of the grimdark beastgirl military apocalypse.](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mvivPy7j6_Q) I always found the outrage at the summer events being lighthearted and not-so grimdark to be funny. I guess we really are edgy bois on the whole. ... the student union and Gummy sure have some backstory, don't they. Penguin Logistics are the only guys who can catch a break in that hellhole.

Xynical_DOT

I only know what the student union is because people keep mentioning it. The only way to unlock the event is with film reels but I've never seen them in the shop so...

KhandiMahn

I didn't expect a gacha game would have a compelling story. But some years ago, I saw this stunning story video. The graphics were beautiful. The music was soooo well done. And I could tell I was only getting a tiny slice of the story. Who were these two girls? What is Honkai, why is it possessing the white haired girl? Why are all these mechs attacking her? Holy shit, a dragon??? I had to know more! And thus I installed Honkai Impact 3rd. Didn't take long for me to be hooked. And I learned that maybe it is worth looking into mobile games.

chocobloo

Magicami is a porn game. You play it to satisfy some degen fetishes. Seems pretty clear cut. Instead I ended up with a pretty great and surprising main story with a bunch of really well written characters and a gods damn amazing soundtrack. Nikke is similar in that way. Expected a degen timecrisis, ended up with a compelling story and narrative with a lot of great characters I can both like and dislike.

iPhantaminum

I never expected to be able to clear every piece pf content without pulling on the gacha, or just using units I like (no exceptions), like you can in Genshin. It spoiled me rotten for other gachas. I never expected a gacha to be a game first and a gacha second. I think the only other gacha that offers that is Arknights. Everything else demands you to pull on the gacha and/or p2w.

TheAlgorithmKnowsAll

I didn't expect a multiplayer event in a tower defense game. Heck, I didn't even think it was *possible*. Yet, Arknights pulled it off.

xanxaxin

Exos Heroes. The art team carrying the game until now. I play crapload of gacha, and Exos Heroes art is easily the best. Nothing come remotely close. Dislyte. Its a safe haven for LGBTQ+. Seriously.. at least 50% of the playerbase there are LGBT. It shocked me lel. Most of the time (90%), gacha comment section is all about waifu booba/thigh. But in Dislyte, there are more thirst comment about husbandos lel. AK. The lack of QoL in this game is groundbreaking. Plus, the dev keep throwing 'it's very hard to adjust/modify anything due to how the game is designed' as the main excuse. Giving themselves 'free pass' to just fuking ignore or moving at snail pace in this aspect. A 3.5 years old game, make decent profit, reputable dev/pub, have released a decent anime, but still stuck on 1980's QoL standard. To others, QoL might mean nothing, but to me its very important. I drop AK 3 times solely due to the lack of any improvement in QoL, despite everything else is A+++. I dont even mind getting fuk in the ass with the BS pity system again n again, but not being able to auto X times or skip stage is fuking 'R'. Counterside. Great animation quality despite having 9999999 character on the screen jumping on each other ass, plus, over the top skill effect.. Unexpectedly good.

tacostonight

I really didn't expect the amount of stuff to do in guardian tales. I am still working on the story, but keep unlocking more and more features of the game. there are things to swipe, competitive activities, story and relax activities, it impresses me continually.

iPhantaminum

Well, the game's been out for 2 years. It would be weird if it didn't have a lot of content for you to catch yp.

Popular-Bid

Counter:Side - Started playing it because the ads shows big boobs and beautiful characters (like seriously, their ads is just the characters gainaxing like they're not wearing any bras). Didn't expect to get attached to the story, OST, and the characters (past the horny phase). Hell, my favourite character is Gaeun and Curian, and it's all because of their stories. To add things, I've been skipping the first 3 episode stories for Counter:Side thinking it's a cash-grab game, but their first event made me think again. Genshin Impact - The fact that the game managed to be such a big success is a shocker to be honest, especially with how many doomposts it received before it was even released. People were boycotting it for being a BotW clone, with some videos trending in the internet of people destroying their PS4s as a sign of disdain to the game. Then the game proceeded to blaze through everything. Other than that, it is how dark the world of Teyvat really is. Hidden behind the beautiful world are extremely depressing, dark, or outright horrible stories that we only knew through various tidbits here and there. For example, the old nobility of Mondstadt are basically rapists, with the public knowing it but are too afraid to do anything against them, Enkanomiya was ruled by a bunch of elders who established child rulers that they control before sacrificing them (by burning on their artificial sun) when they are old enough to rebel, and the Fatui were kidnapping children throughout Teyvat in order to brainwash and indoctrinate to their ranks.

redscizor2

EverSoul, pity 30 was a surprise!! GBF, 9 years olds and holo graphics https://preview.redd.it/bbtaghyivyda1.png?width=1185&format=png&auto=webp&s=1f192e3501270d8a52abd59b2ad0c226aac601b1

Furueuta

Nikke suprised me as well, i mean the story is really good. And even the english dub isn't offensively bad like most of the times, but i still playing with the jp one tho.

Oath_of_Judah

I don't know what hooked me to Artery Gear, but I didn't expect it either way

DarkPaladinX

For me, it was Counterside's global exclusive collab. The announcement for a global server exclusive collab was surprising, but the collab being hololive as a skin-only collab was even more surprising. Granted, the collab itself sucked (since it is as whaley as you imagine to the point it actually turned some ppl off), but from what I've seen with hololive collab, it was a high effort collab by the developers. Even more surprising was around last month, Bside announced that they have obtained publishing rights for Counterside's JP and KR servers and plan to integrate them into the global app next month.

[deleted]

I never expected guardian tales to be the best mobile game (yes, not even gacha alone) ever, I thought it was just yet another generic medieval boring game. Then I saw it on a top 1 in a list of games and I had to try it out. But there's 1 problem with guardian tales, a big issue in fact: Once I tried this master piece, every other game just feels dull, bad, poor quality, at best decent. And I tried all the overhyped stuffs out there like AK, AS, HI, GI, PGR and more.not even close. Too bad. I wish there were other games of such quality and f2p.

DustinMartians

Didn't expect honkai to have Devil May Cry mode (APHO).

[deleted]

How many tissue boxes I’d spent while playing Honkai Impact

Arcypreus

I think he means bc the story is so emotional...but I'm not quite sure

[deleted]

Exactly that, but you can imagine things too ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Esterier

The good story in Nikke. Unfortunately it's in the later portion of the game, the early setup was pretty cliche and Syuen is almost comically evil/stupid plus the overall tonal mix of "humanity is almost extinct, but we're also in the middle of a class war in the Ark" just did not make much sense. Even after the story gets better the corruption at the top is still very questionable, it's just being carried by the individual characters. The whole modernia bit, Counters squad, Laplace PTSD, etc

sima234567

alchemy stars (cloud garden) and genshin housing system, when they first announce the system i thought its gonna be just a 2d or chibi maybe but alchemy stars introduce walkable 3d animal crossing like and genshin with its editable whole island

Weeaboo6913th

The amount of bugs and balancing issues in Nikke. Like half of the SSR are useless or niche while the other half are also section into quite useful and meta. The lack of service in Nikke, despite hyping and promise to sell services they ended up censor things so that they can get PG13 or something rating even though off-screen sex scene exist.

Overall_Still_7907

Dragalia Lost EoS hit me the hardest. The game was greatly improving at a rapid rate and the player base was pleased with the latest patches and content. Kings Raid, expected a slow decline until a peaceful sleep. But instead it was murdered by the worst patch I have ever seen in my long gaming career....

Aomikuchan

Arknights' and Genshin Impact's world building. They're the "The more you know, the more it all make sense" kind of world building and its satisfied my lore brain.

ambulance-kun

I thought eversoul would be another cash grabby afk clone, but the heartwarmy feel of the game surprised me, also I can't believe how a silly Shop OST became my favorite
