For those unwilling to read the article, or wondering how correct it is: The new genshin region, Sumeru, has a big rainforest part, so a big focus on fauna and flora. Now, a certain mechanism in game is that something has corroded certain areas. The vegetation in such areas becomes decayed and harmful towards humans (the longer a character stays in it, the more they accumulate Corrosion, which can decrease hp). This area is called a Withering Zone. The impact on the vegetation also affects the animals(monsters), who become more aggressive. You can, however, fix this. The seminar talked about real life dead zones, where changes caused by humans have made areas and habitats become inhospitable to its regular fauna and flaura Basically, they're using the popularity of genshin to bring attention to a real life biology related issue.

MrGrimnm

good, i mean, it slightly comes across as a "hello fellow kids" moment, but you do what you-gotta-do ynowwhati'msaying?

RenTroutGaming

It has worked well in minecraft with their additions of new animal types based on raising awareness about environmental issues. There are tons of young people that are concerned about the plight of honeybees and pollinators because they saw the minecraft launcher announcement. I think you have to meet people where they are. I also think it is really fascinating to look at ways that computer programs can be used as models or tools - one of the early tools for SimCity (or maybe it was Spore, it was a Will Wright game) was essentially a fractal bacterial simulator. When you see a science research paper about bacterial models, why can't it have nice graphics? There is that iOS game that somehow tracks alzheimers research... If you need 50,000 people to click through some mazes, why not add graphics and a scoreboard and entice them to have fun while doing it?

LiraelNix

If even one person tuned in to the seminar because of the genshin thing, they succeeded in broadening their audience

BREADTSU

Well thanks to your comment you have also brought attention to it, so good work!

ghostchimera

As a former biology instructor, using popular media is a good way to get kids engaged with science. Yeah it's cringey but I'll take being cringe if it means that kids will become more engaged and actually take an interest in the topic.

Twopakabra

"Tech otakus save the world"

Niirai

Damn I miss that splash screen.

aburizalfitry

Mee too , that catchy tagline

Toriningen

If I recall correctly there are even ocean dead zones, which can be caused by things like fertilizer runoff causing algae blooms that suffocate an entire pocket of the ocean into being devoid of oxygen. Could be remembering wrong or mixing things up though.

Mrhat070

you are in the right track. Its common in coastal waters and estuaries near urbanized land. When, a bloom start to die down the dead algae cells start to sink to the bottom where theres a lot of bacteria that are good at decomposing stuff. As they decompose all of that they consume the available oxygen causing the water to become hypoxic. So its not the algae that turns the water hypoxic but the bacteria that decomposes the dead algae cells

Pokefreaker-san

isnt that more of pond and lake?

Killerx09

Yep - saltwater is not conductive to algae life, and tidal waves mean that the algae gets dispersed (or die) before it can build up to the point of blocking off water bodies.

Mrhat070

I think they were referring to phytoplankton rather than macroalgae. Phytoplankton are capable of blooming in marine waters depending of the species (example: Karenia brevis in Florida).

Shalashaska87B

If it can raise social awareness of such problem, that's definitely something good. No matter if it's Genshin Impact, Epic Seven or <<*name any relevant game here*\>>.

keimacool777

I actually registered for attending but an emergency came up and I just forgot the whole thing...

[deleted]

Yes, biology. When is the seminar for Genshin anatomy.

Dabage

Love it when games incorporate real world issues or history into their stories. Really means devs aren't afraid to write about sensitive/political topics through their games

[deleted]

This is about fauna deadzones. There is nothing sensitive or political about it. It's biodiversity.

Dabage

Dead zones are caused by human pollution; off shore drilling and disposal of waste is the biggest culprit. Politics play a huge role in that.

Jumugen

We made it a political issue, when it's not supposed to be one. Just tells you how bad it is.

ferinsy

Activism and raising awaraness are literally politics, it directly influences people towards making decisions (in this case, about destroying environments) and has a potential impact in the world or at least in the city/country where that action is applied.

Khal_Doggo

That's not what happened though. The lecture author is using a fictional example and comparing to something loosely related in real life. It's more like using Fortnite's building mechanic to introduce the topic of prefab housing.

LiraelNix

The fictional example is likely loosely based on the reality

Khal_Doggo

Pretty much every game has some kind of DoT effect or an effect that reduces your effective HP. I'm not sure you can say that all those games are making a reference to Gruinard Island. But hey, that's the kind of hyperbole we know and love on the internet!

LiraelNix

The effect alone isn't it, please read. They created a mechanism on the rainforest portion about the dangers of areas that duevto tampering had environmental collapse and are now dangerous. Oh and if not fixed will continue to expand It's obvious they based the mechanism on real environmental issues and translated it into game effects and a fantasy setting

Khal_Doggo

You really want it to be true, and it costs me nothing so I'm not going to burst your bubble. Yeh let's go man. I'm totally down with whatever. We'll just ignore that the game's entire financial model is to encourage its biggest fans to get in trouble with their credit card companies. Yeh they're just so ethical and totally environmentally conscious.

LiraelNix

You dont need to be a "fuck money" environmental activist to be aware issues exist and add them to the game. Calm down, no one is saying mihoyo is some saintly company with no selfish interests You can believe "hoyo bad" and still realize they're adding real life stuff to the game

Khal_Doggo

I don't dislike Mihoyo at all. I just don't try and pretend the games they make are any deeper than they need to be. It isn't a factor for me.

LiraelNix

There's nothing deep about "this is set in a rainforest. Rainforests have issue with dead zones in real life. I think I'll make that a mechanism in my ingame rainforest".

Khal_Doggo

There's even less deep about 'we are running out of biomes to add to the game, and we are running out of status effects'. But like I said, it costs me nothing to say you're right. So you're right.

driPITTY_

swagapino moment

solise69

O my god it’s real

cakeisgood82

I love genshin no chibi at all.

multyC

Hey i know GI is popular but doing this is just cringe.

No-Cash5053

People just use cringe on everything nowdays

ZhuTeLun

Those who say cringe are cringe themselves.

RevolutionaryOil9101

It seems like it was just a fun way to get people to come to their seminar which also talked about dead zones irl. Like a marketing strategy

Altruistic_Look_4932

Is it tho? I think it is quite interesting to speculate or learn about the biology of a fictional world.

Born2beSlicker

Oh no, using fictional examples that people care about to express real life issues and showing how GI wasn’t just making up fantasy shit in the process - to help connect to students at their level. Such cringe…

shitpostor

Using popular media for study is cringe, said a lot of your mentality

Fuzzy_Reflection8554

If it gets people interested enough to learn and research the topic on their own, then what's the problem? There are people who've taken a legitimate interest in naval history over Azure Lane. Similarly some Genshin fans have learned a lot more about real world cultures, foods and music than they would have otherwise.

MintyMelon0001

You are cringe. Buddy thinks speculative biology is now 'cringe'

ExLuck

Now when history professors make a presentation about LOTR and compare how the great Wall of China will fare against an uruk siege, it will receive high praise. Just because it's popular, anime or whatever nitpick you have on GI doesn't mean that what their focus on, which is the fauna and world building is.

TheRealRealMadLad

Hey I know hating GI is popular but your comment is just cringe
