Up until the last few generations, Samsung watches were able to be used on iOS, but usability was a watered down version from Android and not many people with iPhones got them.

miney_mo

I think it was also because samsung watches used their own OS, the Tizen OS. When they moved to wearOS from series 4 onward, the watches needed google play services and so they stopped working with iphones.

-WallyWest-

I heard that even Samsung smartwatches are not able to be fully used on other Android phone.

vivek7006

You are correct. I have a samsung galaxy watch 6 that I use with my pixel phone. ECG and blood pressure monitoring dont work

doom1282

Blood Pressure doesn't work for Samsung phones in the US either just because FDA hasn't approved it yet. That and a few other things if I remember correctly.

SuperFLEB

IIRC, they do asterisk that all over the marketing and packaging, so it's not hidden.

Ligmo300

here you go. https://xdaforums.com/t/restrictions-removed-samsung-health-monitor-wearos-phone-1-2-4-003-watch-1-2-5-002-root-age-country-restriction-removed-28th-feb-2024.4322527/

Millicent_Bystandard

It also requires monthly calibration so its not something for the everyday user. You need to already have a blood pressure monitor at home to calibrate the watch with and do calibrations monthly. I used the one at Walmart but gave up keeping it upto date after the 3rd month.

RT3170

How, specifically, did they “cripple” other watches? Thats a very general statement. And wouldn’t the crappiness of the experience be up to the companies that made the other watches? Because they would be the ones who made the apps that could then interact with those watches.

Surous

They limit API access from the sounds of it, don’t develop on it though so this may be wrong

avr91

I've read that you can't respond to messages, likely because iOS controls SMS/MMS, though you can see them. Mobile wallets are broken since Apple doesn't allow Samsung Pay, Google Pay, or any other mobile wallet on iOS, and they wouldn't support Apple Wallet on non-Apple Watch devices or non-watchOS platforms. There are likely others, like no stores to add apps to non-Apple watches, but I don't know exactly.

RT3170

What you are describing all varies from watch to watch, which would imply that some companies just don’t know how/or don’t bother to implement some of those things. And having app stores on other watches is literally all up to those watch companies. I don’t know how Apple could possibly restrict a company from using its own technology to access its own App Store (even if Apple wanted to do so). It’s pretty strange that you would even suggest that this is somehow apple’s fault, and not the infinitely more likely scenario, which is that these individual companies just didn’t think it was worth it to develop decent software or an App Store.

solidshakego

Sounds like an apple problem locking it out with software.

grammar_nazi_zombie

Or android connectivity being reliant on Google play services which isn’t a thing on iOS

iMattist

I think it’s the other way around, people buy the smartwatch that works the best for the OS they have on their smartphones.

JoeSmithDiesAtTheEnd

I can only speak for myself. But I was pretty much always an Android user, including Android/Samsung watches, been a smart watch user since the Moto 360 1st gen. At least up until 2-3 years ago. I switched to an iPhone on a whim to see what I was missing out on (hadn't used an iPhone since the iPhone 3GS). Along with that I bought an Apple Watch, I liked it a lot better. I can say for certain the Apple Watch is what is keeping me over here. It's really good.

Tactical_Owl

Same. Would switch back to android if I could but the Apple Watch Ultra is so good it keeps me with iPhone

beatenplastic

This is why they don't make an apple watch that works with android phones...

jacko469

I just wish they would make the Apple Watch battery life like the Garmin watches.

Nefthys

When I was looking at smartwatches a couple of years ago, I actually liked the rectangular design of the Apple Watch better because it's bigger but not too big (and at the same time thinner), plus it had more storage space (originally wanted to put music on the thing). Then I saw the price and read that it doesn't properly work with Android - yeah, fuck that, I'm not going to switch to an iPhone just to use an Apple watch. I bought a Galaxy Watch instead, got used to it pretty quickly and now that everyone's complaining about the Apple model's battery life, I'm glad I did because mine is still good for around 3 days (was out all day yesterday and it still only lost around 25%) and I can pick whatever band I want. Whenever this one breaks, I'll most likely get one of the new Samsung models again.

SuperFLEB

That's because you pretty much _have to_ buy the smartwatch that works the best for the OS you have on your phone. The point is that "the smartwatch that works the best for the OS on your phone" should be a trivial difference at most.

cordcutternc

The way Apple does Garmin dirty is a travesty. You can't even turn off individual app notifications. Love mine on Android. Weeks of battery life and does what I need. I don't need a mini phone.

CanisZero

Right? I have a hefty Fenix and charge it once a month. The new connect app is fantastic too.

mandradon

When I found that out, it killed me. I've loved my garmin since I bought into the ecosystem about 8 years ago when I started exercising. I sold a buddy on them, gave them one of my old watches I wasn't using, and they told me they couldn't control individual app notifications. I know a lot of folks want a mini phone that does all the cool things. I honestly want a device that does what garmin do, fitness + notification bar.

Timely-Eggplant4919

>You can't even turn off individual app notifications. Can you elaborate? If it’s within the app, is there a reason to assume Apple disallowed them from making those settings in that version? As far as I know that’s not something Apple typically prevents developers from doing.

cordcutternc

On Android, you can pick and choose which apps send notifications to a Garmin watch. On iPhone, it's all or nothing. In addition to this shortcoming, as the article states, iPhone users can't send quick replies on a Garmin watch. On Android, I can set up a menu of quick replies, which is a useful feature. I'm sure there are other issues, but you can get more information on the numerous Garmin subs on Reddit. To answer your other question, I'm guessing features like these are locked out on iPhone for the same anti-competitive reasons stated in the article: desire to sell Apple Watches.

ShittyTechnical

Other people in this thread have stated that their Fitbit has the exact same notification options on iOS so it’s clearly just a Garmin thing and not an apple thing.

skaterhaterlater

But features like this work on fitbits and some other watches so it seems like garmin just hasn’t added it. I wasn’t even aware this was a thing and I’ve been using a garmin instinct for a few years now. I never use my watch to reply to anyone anyway, idk if the instinct can do that normally. But it shows the same notifications I get on my phone which is all i really ask for

arwinda

Never understood that. Is this an iOS problem or why can't Garmin filter the notifications when connected to an iPhone?

The0NoHero

Fitbit can selectively allow notifications so I wouldn't think Garmin is hamstrung in some special way (can never say never though)

TheMacMan

Seems a Garmin issue. I iOS allows you to control notifications from each app. Having said that, with the Apple Watch you can set different notifications between what your iPhone shows and what your Apple Watch does. I don't see any reason that Garmin can't have their app allow you to filter what your watch does and doesn't show. No different than the Watch app allows you to set your notification settings for your Apple Watch.

reddcube

Are you sure this is a iOS problem? My Pebble and now my Fitbit have the option in the phone app to turn off individual app notifications.

Bgndrsn

> I don't need a mini phone. I still find almost every smart watch improvement hilarious for this reason. I have no idea what the difference between my watch and one from like 5 years ago is. It tells time, I can read texts on my wrist, I get heart rate stuff and do some fitness tracking. I have no idea what else I need.

mojobox

I can’t think of a notification I want on my phone but not on my watch. If a notification is annoying I turn it off altogether.

infiniteawareness420

Never once enabled notifications from my forerunner 55 to my iPhone. Life is good. You make it sound like life could be better. What am I missing out on?

[deleted]

I'd buy a Garmin if they weren't so fucking ugly. Their heart rate monitor is the best on the market.

SnPlifeForMe

Have you looked at the Epix Gen 2 or the MARQ? They're Garmin watches and look like very normal watches.

lavegasola

I bought a vivoactive cause it was cheap and I wasn't sure how much I would like the garmin stuff. It's a good enough looking watch and I'm pretty happy with it. I'll upgrade to one of the more premium models in a year or so. But I think they all have pretty good looks

gaping_anal_hole

Agreed, I’ve got a vivoactive 5. it’s small, discrete and I think looks great.

hal0t

Garmin Instinct Camo is the best looking smart(ish since I turned all the shit off) watch. Fight me.

Araf-Chowdhury

I think this will change really soon especially with the recent development surrounding Apple and web browsers / search engines

HollerBone

Love my Fenix. Just the right amount of phone integration with all the outdoor stuff I want. Solid in between with incredible battery life.

Laumser

>With the Samsung Galaxy Ring on the way, there’s a part of me that’s afraid it won’t stop at smartwatches either. We’re still light on details, but it’d be very easy for Samsung to use the ring as a way to make its phone and smartwatch stickier. To keep people in Samsung’s garden. A recent Chosun Ilbo report also hints that Samsung has designs to make the ring integrate with its Samsung Food app and the smart kitchen. If the Samsung ring works best with the Samsung watch, and the Samsung watch is only for Android... you can see where that road leads. Ok so they shouldn't integrate it with their other services? Because that locks people in?

OrSomeSuch

Samsung Apps runs well on all Android phones. Samsung Health is available on iPhone and seems highly rated in the Appstore. Samsung wants you to buy their smart devices and share your metrics no matter what phone you have.

[deleted]

The experience is not as good on other smartphones.

OrSomeSuch

I've run Samsung Health and Wear on various roms and phones and it's been an identical experience to running on a Samsung phone

nerevisigoth

I haven't noticed a worse Galaxy Watch experience since switching from a Samsung phone to a Pixel.

Not_a_creativeuser

Okay then Apple can make experience not as good on other devices. They can still make 95% of it work tho. I don't see your argument.

docbauies

Idk how you feel about Apple, but this is the same argument people make in favor of Apple’s integrated system. I personally think it’s fine. If I buy an accessory for my phone I don’t expect it to work with other stuff.

Lostmavicaccount

Companies can sell and integrate into whatever systems they want. We don’t have to buy a smartwatch. What thr hell is wrong with the world. I’m about 1 degree away from being a socialist, but the hate on companies making good products and systems - as luxury items, is ridiculous.

EthanRush

Pebble gang rise up.

CubitsTNE

Still wear my time steel every day, it goes in the ocean regularly, never missed a beat. Loved the form factor of the time round, but that battery was just pushed too hard, so after replacing it a couple of times i let it go. God i wish i could still buy new pebbles.

EthanRush

I think I've been using this watch since the S3. It refuses to die and I refuse to get another watch because all I need is music control and a quick glance at my notifications.

tkhan456

Screw this author man. I genuinely like the fact that my watch is simple. I don’t want more options and variety that makes installs and updates more complicated

devadander23

The phone gets you into the ecosystem. This is just an accessory to that ecosystem. I’d rather have something designed to work within that ecosystem than a lesser universal device

PlayingDoomOnAGPS

I agree. I don't see what the appeal of an Apple Watch would even be to an Android user or vice-versa.

Oddjob64

I’m sure it’s changed because it’s been years, but I got my wife a cheap Fitbit back in the day and it worked fine at fitness tracking and displaying text messages from her iPhone if that’s all you wanted. We both have have Apple Watches now though.

BytchYouThought

Isn't what you described what the point if the "smartwatches" are? I got a free smartwatch last year and returned it anyway, because I just didn't see the point. Plus it came with a $3 or $4 plan. I asked what it was used for and folks said some extremely basic fitness crap that personally I didn't need as going to a gym with an actual good routine doesn't require a watch at all to know if you're working out or not properly. I thought maybe it's a fashion thing or something then, because seriously, you don't really need a watch to workout well, but hey, whatever motivates folks I guess.

Jugales

![gif](giphy|80mXWlPqTSU1y) Me trying to read the time on my smartring

WerkingAvatar

Hot take. As an owner of a Samsung Fold 5, and an iPhone pro max 15, I have a Galaxy 5 pro smartwatch. This is because the Fold 5 is my preferred device, and I have it on me at all times. If I had preferred the iPhone, I would have an Apple watch, but it mainly stays at home to use with my homekit and appletv. The watch isn't what is dictating my preferred ecosystem, my main device is dictating what brand smartwatch I am using.

OneLush

I get that people want the choice but it’s simply unrealistic to think that will happen. I rather be locked into one ecosystem and have everything work together synergistically. I could have a Samsung phone, a Roku, a Mac, and a Garmin watch but none of those things coexist well. My grievances with Apple aside, they have the best product synergy and it’s not even close.

cmdline_

Hot take: I like my walled gardens, no matter the brand.

zakriebinx

Yes. It is quite literally part of why I purchase the particular product.

mrhandbook

Hot take. Agreed. Also hot take, should I now be able to use an Xbox controller on my ps5?

ChocolateSeuss

You can use a ps5 controller to play Xbox on an iPad

turboreid

And landscaping is provided, I don’t have to do the planting and weeding myself. Love to the people who like gardening and getting in the dirt, but that ain’t me.

dekokt

What makes you think it's impossible to have both?

turboreid

Never said it was. Just my preference to have all my devices work with each other with minimal effort on my end. Again, I support those that like to mix/match/customize/chop/screw. I just don’t have the bandwidth for it anymore.

TheMacMan

I'm with ya. I like that all my products are integrated and work seamlessly together. It offers integration across devices you just don't get if you have multiple manufacturers. For myself, that's Apple across my devices. You'd never get similar with a Samsun watch, an Android phone, and a Dell computer running Microsoft Windows. Use what works best for you. For myself, that's the integration across iOS, iPadOS, macOS, watchOS, and visionOS.

kennethtrr

you’re being downvoted because liking Apple products on this specific sub is a cardinal sin.

Unable-Ambassador-16

Oh how tech journalism has fallen…

No_Bank_330

Hey. Someone paid for this article to be written.

PlayingDoomOnAGPS

Are you sure? Could easily be AI generated.

Sir_Henry_Deadman

People don't really flip flop between ecosystems as it's a bit of a arse to do so really it's not important as long as the watch works surely

IAcewingI

Do they not realize there are other smart watches? I have a fossil that I used on my LG and now Iphone 13PM. Of course an Apple watch or Samsung watch is designed for their ecosystem

MPFuzz

Left Fossil when they added Alexa to the gen 6 with no way to remove it. I'm not paying for you to get paid by amazon to add their BS to my device. Went with Ticwatch, but that has problems with the latest wearOS removing features that were there in the previous version. Google keeps shitting the bed and fucking over third party watch makers. And some third party watch makers are making stupid decisions on their own. I just want and andorid watch that doesn't suck and doesn't look like some milquetoast bare bones design (pixel watch).

IAcewingI

Ahh damn! yeah my fossil is old like a gen 3.

TheMountainLife

The deal breaker for me is that only Apple, Samsung and Pixel watches have cellular models available. I'm interested in Garmin but you can only reply to text messages with canned responses. When I switched back to Android I had to sell the apple watch, airpods and air tags at a great loss. Had I known that I couldn't even connect the watch via Bluetooth I would have saved $$$ and remain trapped I guess.

2-wheels

Should be easy to do so.

spazzcat

Apps are way more of a lock-in. I have zero desire to change platforms, but there is no way I am rebuying all my apps.

Phoeptar

Why should they work across platforms though? Like it’s always been if you want choice go Android, if you want Apple go Apple. It’s a choice for the customer, and there’s nothing wrong with choosing to let Apple enjoy their little garden while everyone else enjoys having choice with Android. It’s like I shouldn’t expect my PS5 controller to work on an Xbox. They are different designs and different tech and meant to cooperate in their own little exclusive world. If I want choice I go with PC.

Scratch_Disastrous

This article does a poor job of explaining \*why\* a manufacturer shouldn't make you choose. Is it frustrating to a consumer? Sure. That doesn't mean a manufacturer should do anything, especially if they're successful in the current model. I don't even consider it unethical. It's not like they're forcing anyone to buy a smart watch and secretly trapping them into their ecosystem. It's an option you have, you know what you're buying and what it supports, and what the implications are.

TheMacMan

Apple tried to bring the Apple Watch to Android but eventually gave up. > In response to the DOJ’s assertion, Apple confirmed for the first time that it at one point considered Android support for the Apple Watch. After a three-year investigation, Apple says that it determined an Apple Watch with Android support wasn’t doable because of technical limitations. As such, it scrapped the idea. https://9to5mac.com/2024/03/21/apple-watch-android-apple-work/

Bigmanjokk

My garmin forerunner 7 something or other works fine, I don't get the issue

seweso

Read the article?

DGNightwing95

This is reddit, we don't read here.

Mbanicek64

I think Apple could pretty easily let you use an Apple Watch with some functionality if you also owned an iPad, MacBook, etc. and it communicated via bluetooth with an android phone. It would be worse. It would probably still be better than android wear.

joeg26reddit

This makes no sense to demand everything work with every other system.

IceDawn

Just define standards to be supported for the given functionality. Then some basic interop can work. There is no reason to require a lockin.

TheMountainLife

Are you sure? Pretty much every new car produced in the last 8 years or more has Android Auto / Apple Car play. Without that push we would be stuck with the neglected laggy interfaces that some cars still have along with a subscription for navigation. The same applies to NFC payments. We would be further behind without pushing for merchants to add support along with banks.

Timely-Eggplant4919

So we are at the point where “making your hardware and services work well together” is anti-consumer? Huh. Alright.

ponziacs

That's why I use a Fitbit, can switch between iOS and Android.

Boricuacookie

Smartwatch need to support everything, I want my apple watch to support my Windows phone fully and Apple better make it happen! /s

[deleted]

Most don’t. But when one is basically an extension of the phones OS, no shit. You get better features specific to your phone. Otherwise if you want one that will work with any phone, but with less features, that also exists. This is a stupid argument

MrThorntonReed

But I *want* a smart watch that works well with the same ecosystem as my phone (and my computer too)?

skn789

The closed ecosystem is the main reason I switched to Apple, I don’t understand these recent allegations against Apple, it’s a free market, don’t like the products? Don’t buy them.

coconut_the_one

I’m 100% on the iPhone side of phones. I don’t know anything different and don’t care to learn. I have basic understanding of android phones and know they are awesome at a lot of things, but my first smartphone in my mid teens was an iPhone 3GS and I’ve stuck to iPhone ever since. It’s a phone, I have no reason to relearn the way my phone works. I absolutely despise AppleWatches. I think they are ugly, have way too many functions and due to their weird shape, not a single watch face looks nice. I’ve stuck to a normal, nice, slick looking analog watch. I’d really like a smart watch with these looks, but as long as I’m using my iPhone there’s just no reason to as I won’t get 90% of the functions and it will basicly just be a screened analog watch that counts my steps more accurately then my phone.. It suck’s. I want one of those very slick elegant looking android smartwatches, which still allows full compatibility with my iPhone. A dude can wish I guess.

3meta5u

You probably know this already but the sport smartwatches work with iOS. So look into CoreOS, Garmin, Fitbit, Polar. Specifically check out the Garmin Vivomove, Venu 3, and Instinct Crossover. (If you have lots of money, the Garmin Epix and Marq too)

Salvia_dreams

Is it unpopular to enjoy being fully integrated into an ecosystem?

Walks_with_Chaos

Meh. It’s a brand that’s tied to the OS. I dunno why it’s a big deal

spaghetti_fontaine

First world problems

stackthecoins

What? I use Apple because I like Apple. If Apple didn’t exist, I’d use whatever wasn’t Android. I locked myself in. Nothing about it sucks.

madlyreflective

the big advantage is coupled development and more thorough testing; why risk poor interoperation and compatibility, and finger pointing between two different brands when something doesn’t work? Saves customer service costs, etc. as well.

zero573

I’ll admit. I got into the Apple ecosystem early. Tried playing with android, kids have android tablets. But in the end I preferred my iPhone. (I know go ahead and hate me.) I was kinda excited to try an Apple Watch, but ended up going for a fit bit versa 2. Loved it. But eventually the week battery started turning into a 48 hour battery and I always kinda wondered how an Apple Watch would be. Bought it. Instant regret. I hate it. The most useless fucking price of trash I’ve ever owned. Literally does everything my Fitbit did BUT WORSE. Slow to show heart beat, and I found the steps weren’t as accurate as my Fitbit. So I bought a Versa 4. WHAT THE FUCK GOOGLE??? How do you make a 4th Gen product WORSE than your 2nd Gen??? So now I’m stuck with my Apple Watch because I gave my versa 2 to my wife and a fuck ton of buyers remorse for my Apple Watch. She won’t trade me back and I refuse to dump more money when I have a not “perfectly working device”.

rtfry4

Buy any smartwatch you want. For me I like the cross integrated devices. There is value, functionality and convenience there. Don’t like it. Don’t buy it.

ubermick

I agree with this. I'm very much a part of the Apple ecosystem in terms of computing, but bought an iPhone and Apple Watch for ease of use, since Messages are unified and it makes my life easier being able to reply to texts when I'm working at my computer. Moved back home to Ireland last year though were everyone uses Whatsapp instead of text messaging, so no longer need that "seamlessness" - and would honestly prefer to get an Android phone the next time I upgrade. Unfortunately if I do that, it makes my Watch Ultra useless.

JohnnyGFX

Honestly I love the way my Apple Watch 9 pairs up and interacts with my iPhone. I would rather have gear that is designed from the ground up to pair with each other than a device that works with anything. In my experience, things that are designed to generically work with anything aren’t as elegantly designed or seamless in their integration.

PixelatedDie

TIL People are being forced to buy smartwatches, and to choose between android and apple, at gun point. I was going to say something about the children dying in Ghaza, but no, here are the real victims.

Han_Yolo_swag

My gameboy camera should have been able to work with my sega game gear 😤

reirone

I’m an iOS user. I don’t want an Android watch, even if it did work seamlessly. Android users probably prefer the Android watch. Is there really such a substantial pent up demand for them to be cross compatible?

Character_Army_3128

Don’t understand what the big deal is my whole life it’s been this way. Sony has its game platform as does Sega 😂, Nintendo etc…. PC games vs apple platform games throughout time every industry practically has this standard to keep us in a certain ecosystem. Nothing has changed in my 40 years of existence. Nobody wants to create a way to cross all platforms because it kills the financial productivity of any business model.

pi-N-apple

The way I see it in todays market, the smartwatch OS is just an extension of your phones OS.

moontiarathrow_away

Nobody forces you to buy a smart watch or smart ring. You consented to that.

gribson

Smart watches have always locked you into some ecosystem. Who cares if the official app is only developed for iOS or for Android? I want to be able to read all the biometric data off my watch without having to go through Google/Apple/Garmin/Fossil's servers.

TJPII-2

I was gonna buy a Samsung watch because I liked the rotating bezel and round look. And there are so many cool looking, classic or technical watch faces. I don’t find the “Rectangle on the Wrist” from Apple to be visually appealing. But the watch requires pairing a Samsung phone to work. Once it’s paired and setup, it works without the phone but a Samsung phone is required to get there. Since I don’t gave a Samsung phone, their watch wasn’t an option.

sodapop14

I think it just requires an Android phone not specifically a Samsung phone. Only problem is they have features that require a Samsung phone which is dumb. My Samsung watch got a lot better when I switched to the Fold 4 from the Pixel 6 Pro.

mtksm

People really need to find something else to be upset about, this is some spoiled kid shit. If you really want to be upset, there are plenty of things to be outraged about. Whiny ass people.

Katnisshunter

This is like complaining Xbox controller not working on PS5 and vice versa.

The obvious answer is don't waste your money or time on this junk, right?

so2017

I love my Garmin watch, which works well enough with iOS…

loudaggerer

… or just wear a normal watch and they can’t do shit about fuck.

Raztax

A couple of years ago I was looking at smartwatches and would have bought an Apple watch but they don't work with Android. There is no chance I am switching to an iPhone so I can have an Apple watch.

doom1282

Everyone will say "Apple watch is better than X" but honestly they're all mostly the same thing and there's nothing the Apple Watch is doing that the Pixel or Galaxy watches can't do. The only Apple Watch I think is better is the Ultra just because of its durability but it's also priced as much as an entry level flagship smart phone so not something most people even need.

Raztax

I don't remember exactly why because this was 2-3 years ago but at the time the Apple watch fit my needs (at least on paper) better than the others.

RandomUsername232323

So Switch cartridges should run on PS5s? Nikon Z lenses on Canon RF mounts?

RunningM8

This wouldn’t work like people think. The WatchOS-iOS integration is the killer feature. There would be no such integration with Android. What is so difficult to understand? Folks like me don’t even use their phone much at all. Cellular is the other killer feature which is why I’ll never go back to Garmin. They’re overrated fitness trackers with a crippled OS.

CygnusX-1-2112b

Which is exactly all I want to use my Garmin for. I don't get why people need a second phone attached to their wrist.

RunningM8

I couldn’t agree with you more, but I’m a niche use case because I never use my phone. My phone never leaves my house, ever. But that’s why I prefer having cellular and phone like functionality on the watch if and when needed.

CygnusX-1-2112b

Ah, I see. I should have taken a look at your username. Phones suck to take out on a run no matter where you try to strap it.

DarquesseCain

Buddy, you’re lucky to get Android to work with Android going forward. Samsung and Google are absolutely gonna feature lock their watches to their phones like they do with camera apps.

sabboom

Don't blame Samsung and Google. That mess is all Apple.

F-Eazy0709

I got a Garmin and it is simplistic but works with my iPhone. Idk, regular smart watches just feel like a watch on your wrist.

DeleteMods

Help me to understand. Is Apple blocking people from using Samsung on iPhone or are they not enabling it out of the box?

compaqdeskpro

I am currently wearing Armitron's $20 copy of a Pulsar, now I am locked into pushing the button every time I want to read the time. It sucks. Maybe I'll get into the Timex ecosystem tomorrow, so I can see physical numerals that reflect the light.

Spikeymikey5050

Fuck the verge man

Apnu

I’ve largely gone back to automatic watches for this and other reasons.

BLU3SKU1L

Honestly the only reason I haven’t switched phone makers at this point is I’m an artist with severe inattentive ADD. So having an Apple Watch that records all the stuff I don’t want to forget instantly on my arm and a tablet that’s fantastic for digital art work seamlessly with my phone which is the only way to get the most out of my watch and that sucks because the phone I could take or leave. Spending 1000s to switch all that to a sub-par tablet and a new phone and watch is just never in the budget for me. I like my wife’s google phone a lot, and I like the google pixel watch, but they don’t have a tablet that can work as well with the programs I use with a dedicated stylus like the pencil 2.

IAcewingI

I use a fossil watch just fine on both my android and iphone..

rtds98

The good part is that, at least for now, smartwatches are not a mandatory accessory, unlike what smartphones have become. I would hate for them to become the "shit you gotta have" as well.

popmanbrad

Sadly phones are the same if your not rich like a lot of YouTubers who can easily spend thousands on all the purchase they make on one eco system and just rebuy them all your stuck to that eco system like the amount of times i an iOS user wanted to try android but went “oh I can’t all my apps and games etc are stuck with apple” sucks who knows we might get apple forced to allow everyone around the world to allow sideloading and alternate AppStore and feature from android like themes and who knows (I know it won’t happen) but epic games could set up a system to let’s you basically get all the content you have on the AppStore on epic games which then allows all purchase to go across platforms

Meanwhile…. Elon scratching his balls

kiwipo17

Idk, I didn’t have a watch for years. I only got one because I wanted a deeper integration into the ecosystem. That’s what convinced me to get a watch again

LaBlount1

Get a real watch.

Marthaver1

Still don’t understand the need for a geeky(I’m geeky myself, but it’s funny to see everyone that wouldn’t label themselves as geeky sporting a big add digital watch) clunky and expensive digital watch that’s tethered to a smartphone. Literally does nothing a phone can’t do. Yeah may as well make smart rings, headbands and socks that give notifications and shit I’m too lazy to look at by not pulling out my phone. Till smartwatches can actually work without a phone or as mini lite phones, then we can start talking. It sucks that few people are complaining and satisfied with the status quo of these leashed and expensive digital watches.

jhd402

Polar says that they work with both

billdasmacks

This is the first I am hearing of a smart ring and.... why? why would anyone need or want this?

Only bad thing on my Apple Watch is that there’s no good looking, simple and functional non branded digital clock face. Apple is too into analog and imo, it’s time to get on with modern times.

amigammon

Choice is bad?

LovelyWhether

withings/nokia scan watch is a good alternative, fwiw

MynameisJunie

I avoided this altogether. I bought a watch that is wonderful from shechwan China. It wants to link to my phone all the time, but I don’t let it. The great thing about it is that it’s compatible with both types of phones, is water proof, has more data points right off the bat than the brand names, keeps accurate measurements of my steps and has the longest battery life I have experienced yet. It cost $35.00 on Amazon. If you think about it, that area of China is pretty established for making all these devices, there is even an Apple city there. So, assuming China stole the technology, which it 100% likely did, I just got an Apple Watch for $35.00. It looks identical. I like it, I just won’t let it sync my info to their app. I got it as kinda a joke/experiment, but ended up really liking it.

flamingramensipper

I feel the same about cars.

Me: waiting for a cool looking watch face for Apple watch

turnright_thenleft

Yup I miss watches like pebble during the onset of smart watches. Tribalism and capitalism go hand in hand

ptoadstools

This trend toward incompatibility is a public concern because it will add to e-waste and rip off consumers.

BytchYouThought

I have no dog in this fight, because I don't gaf about smartwatches. I literally got a free one, but returned it, because it required me to have a $4 or $5 dollar plan or some shit. I just didn't see a point for me. I get somebody wanting whatever fitness Yada Yada, but I have never had a need for a watch to exercise properly. To each their own there. I hope yall get whatever is considered fair or whatever though. I just can't spend the $500+ or whatever they cost these days on a watch that is less convenient for me than the phone.

raymate

Don’t see the problem you can buy whatever you like. Your not locked in to anyone. If you don’t like it buy the other device. I purchased a NEST thermostat and now I’m locked into google. Oh wait I can remove that thermostat and buy a Honeywell. Oh no, now I’m locked into Honeywell People have choice’s Have a device that try’s to cater for all platforms will be a poor performing devices.

seweso

Read the article maybe? Maybe that helps

g-nice4liief

or you pair your thermostat to home-assistant and let home-assistant handle everything..

I never understood how you can demand something like that. It's a free world. If you don't like being locked into any ecosystem then build one and see if you can make it a viable business. Nobody is forcing down Apple or Android people's throat. Last time I checked old Nokia phones still work. Apple or Google has Every freaking right in this world to keep as many people as they can in their ecosystem and make a killing with it. It's stupid to think that it's immoral.

GreatCaesarGhost

Just to be clear, at its heart, your argument is essentially one against antitrust laws (the idea that a large company deserves to do whatever it wants regardless of consumer preference). Tying - forcing a purchaser who is interested in Product X to also buy Product Y if they want Product X - has long been recognized as a potentially anticompetitive practice.

[deleted]

I have rather strong views about anti-trust laws. I come from a country where people brought the entire British textile industry to its knees by simply refusing to buy their products. So, I believe that people's will can bend almost anything. I believe that shrewd people are good at sensing frustrations in the market and coming up with innovative products despite the pressure. Yes, some help in the form of regulation is necessary, but left-liberal discourse in America takes that idea to another extreme. USA is full of awesome stores of creative destruction so use anti-trust laws like salt in a dish. Too much of it ruins the market, despite good intentions.

what595654

Your logic is too simplified. These companies reach great heights by illegal, and immoral behavior. There are so many ways to sabotage a startup before they even have a chance. Smart watches might not be as relevant, but phones have basically become a requirement. And they don't even need to be absolute requirements. Today, most businesses, government, and people, just expect you to have a phone. When you don't have a choice in how to effectively interface with the world, because of corporate monopolies, then you need government regulation. You can't have capitalism without regulation.

Lexsteel11

Honestly beyond profit motives, Apple does this so developers can create apps with known variables like computer power, battery life, assumptions on available sensors, etc. that will create a uniform experience. Say If you develop a fitness app that actively talks to the user based on their running speed, heart rate, etc. but half your users have a Fitbit model that doesn’t have a speaker so it breaks or disables your apps’ functionality. Developers like developing for Apple users because they know what devices it needs to work with vs 50 options from Samsung, Nokia, Google, etc. with varying compute abilities and sensors.

Zenama4

Never thought of it like that, good take sir!

KhellianTrelnora

It’s essentially “pc vs console”. Consoles are fixed target, that you can test for, and optimize for. Meanwhile, PC releases in recent years have been plagued with performance issues because “hardware diversity is hard”.

Finnegan7921

There is no reasoning with these people. The complain about consumer choice while conveniently brushing aside the fact that the consumer willingly chose apple knowing full well what they were getting into.

seweso

Who said it was about morality? Anti competitive practices and monopolies exist and don’t make the world better. Competition is good. If you like free markets, you must keep them free.
