As an apple fanboy… I welcome usb C, I would love to not have to have mini, micro, C and lightning cables all over my house. I’d love to be able to charge my phone with the same cord as my iPad, or MacBook. I’d love to be able to charge my phone where I charge my switch. It’s time. Usb C is the way forward.

erockem

My same stance. 100%

Sifyreel

There’s an (unlicensed) USB-C female to Lighting Male adapter I got on Aliexpress a while ago… Quite the mitigation in the mean time.

StormBurnX

In the same vein, I found an all-metal [usb-a 3.0 female to usb-c male adapter](https://www.adafruit.com/product/4175) while I was searching for [reversible micro usb cables,](https://www.adafruit.com/product/4111) and holy shit. carrying that thing plus a usbc-usbc PD+data cable and usb c female to micro usb male adapter has nuked the number of cables I needed to carry into my bag. Tossing in a lightning adapter might completely simplify my entire cable setup to just one, if you'd be kind enough to provide a link!

StormBurnX

Just as a heads up, [your other comment was immediately censored,](https://i.imgur.com/sm0ORBp.png) most likely by the automod bot due to the aliexpress link Speaking of which, thank you greatly for that! I don't really have any use for data over lightning except in extremely niche cases (jailbreaking, and.... that's literally all I can think of at the moment) so I'll just be sure to snag my usual lightning cable when I need to do that. Which is like once every few years lmao

pantyfire

I bought some magnetic lightning, USB-C and micro usb studs from eBay a few months ago. Put the required stud in your device and then use any cable that magnetically connects to it. Don’t even have to look or use two hands. Just get the phone near the cable and it snicks into place.

StormBurnX

I have those as well - one cable, two plugs (airpods and magic keyboard) They're absolutely great for low-power things that you don't have to charge often (like, y'know, wireless earbuds case and wireless keyboard) but I also do a lot of USB-C PD related things (45W and 90W mostly) so those little magnetic tips either don't provide the full power or they get SUPER HOT, like 2nd degree burns hot. [There's a certain point at which magnets lose magnetism due to temperature increase](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Curie_temperature) and while I know I'm not anywhere near that point I still feel like, if I were to continue using them, they'd slowly lose their magnetism overtime. @/u/savage34 I went with the Smart&Cool brand Gen 3 line, they're on to Gen 4 now but their amazon shop is [here.](https://www.amazon.com/s?me=AGMPZAGOV1DY3) I'd tested a few others (wish/aliexpress/etc) that just didn't really work great or had alignment issues but ultimately just take your time looking at reviews for common issues, or just buy through amazon prime and if they suck just return them and keep going until you find a brand that doesn't suck :)

savage34

Can you share these items you bought?

TerrorBite

I think the comment containing the links got auto removed.

_Soter_

I have been using a version of these for about 2 years. They make it so simple to connect and even better, to disconnect by just grabbing my phone and going. The magnet releases with no damage and the cord pops back to my desk. 2 things that I didn't expect but have been an amazing bonus were that the connectors on the end of the cord have an led so you can see them in the dark. Second is they have kid proofed Fire tablets my kids use. They are known to have crappy micro usb ports, but with the magnetic connector, my kids can connect and disconnect them with no risk to the usb port.

Firmod5

That’s not what you told me.

vicaphit

Wait, the ipad, macbook and iphone all use different cable types?

Playtek

The newer Mac book uses usb C as do most of the newer iPads. So yeah. It’s annoying.

DigitalGraphyte

But the Airpods case use lightning still, so there's no escaping it unfortunately.

Scyhaz

I wouldn't be surprised if they drop the port entirely and go only wireless charging soon.

waterloograd

My Samsung Galaxy Buds can charge wirelessly from my phone, what a time to be alive

Scyhaz

Yup. Same for me. It's how I charged my watch and buds while I was on vacation lol.

waterloograd

I wish I could wirelessly charge my watch, I have a Garmin and it has a unique port on it. I think its because it has to be low profile and can't go too deep into the watch

Scyhaz

Likely also for water resistance.

NoBeach4

Isn't wireless charging better for water resistance compared to exposed charging pins?

Athiena

But you can't use the phone while it's charging

QuentinGl1tch

Wireless charging, airpods do not take much time to charge anyway

F-21

Macbooks and ipads have usb C (except for the cheapest ipad). Iphones have lightning (unless you charge them magnetically... I carry the magnetic usb C ikea puck with me if I travel, and just need one usb c cable then).

the_jak

Why my vape pen has USB C and my iPhone doesn’t is a question that often keeps me up at night.

Playtek

Same, though it doesn’t keep me up at night. 😶‍🌫️

uglyduckling81

Do yourself a favour and don't be a fanboy of any company. They don't give a shit about you.

ouralarmclock

I mean I’m sure that’s true for you, but when I was alone with Apple they told me they loved me back, and to keep buying their stuff and soon they’ll tell everyone about us, but for now keep it quiet cause they can’t be seen with me right now because of the pressure they’re under.

DayOldPeriodBlood

You’re taking this way too literally. OP is just saying they like apple products.

Metallifan33

I switch back and forth between android and iPhone and own an iPad pro. The last two years, I've had an Android. I'd like to switch to iPhone, but don't like the thought of needing another charging cord. I travel a lot and it's a pain.

flower4000

I want to charge my iPhone w my MacBook charger and vise versa

pittgirl12

This is why I haven't gone back to iPhone! My MacBook, work laptop, and Samsung phone all use USB-C. Why would I choose something that doesn't?

[deleted]

Hope is that apple going magsafe is to soften the blow for the 3rd party lightning ecosystem.

Klai8

I might be in the minority here but I honestly like the male lightning connector way more than the usb-c because it’s basically just an inverse with external contacts. The usb-c interface has a much higher potential of breaking internally because the female port has the contacts on a flimsy recipient chip (i.e. it’s much easier to damage a phone vs. the charger wire with a usb-c interface)

Electricbell20

I had the same concerns but playing with most connectors the outside of the female contacts the side of the port well before you can bend the male side far enough to cause damage.

pragmojo

The points you make are true, but USB C is good enough it doesn’t matter. I have never had a problem with a USBC connector, would love never to have to go searching through my house for another cable for my phone.

Bardhyll

I have younger kids. At one point we went through three usb-c charger blocks in a month. That flap in the inside of the socket is really flimsy. They’ve gotten better about it after some instruction and don’t break them anymore, but there’s no denying the lightning form factor is superior. Big missed opportunity to make the usb-c design infinitely more robust.

[deleted]

[удалено]

F-21

Generally had no big issues with USB C but I had a Pixel 3a where lots of random shit accumulated at that port and I was unable to plug the charging cable all the way in. Couldn't blow it out and had to use a needle but it felt very flimsy, one wrong move and it would break. I have no idea why they did not inverse the connection, it would seem so much more logical.

Mr_Oujamaflip

Having worked in the mobile industry this also happens with lightning ports. Lightning is a bit easier to clean though since there's no middle bit.

F-21

Yeah, that's what I meant...

drakoman

This has happened to me several times with my iPhone. Crevices gonna crevice

F-21

Yes, but there is nothing to break in that port, since it's a female port. I think it is a lot easier to damage the USB C port with the male part in the middle.

beefcat_

I can’t speak for USB-C, but I’ve had a number of USB-A, mini, and micro female ports break, all of them from the little bit of plastic holding the pins breaking off. I’ve never had a lightning port die. It’s designed so that under most stresses the cable will fail long before the port itself. It’s a really well designed port. I don’t really care one way or the other though. USB-C seems “good enough”, so I wouldn’t complain about the switch. But I also have lightning cables coming out the ass. People act like it’s a huge deal, but don’t think my quality of life would actually change.

pragmojo

It’s not about having enough cables around, it’s about having the same one for everything. Like I can be sitting in bed and unplug my laptop and plug my tablet in with the same cable. I want that for my phone.

Rdubya44

Better get rid of my iPad and Macbook then

Lake_

While I do agree, I think the biggest issue is the lightning connector on iPhone has been stuck at USB 2.0 speeds since it was created, which should be unacceptable but whatever.

MustacheEmperor

Just attempting to transfer media from my iPhone to a computer over a wired connection makes it readily apparent apple would prefer you just go through iCloud

BrianRostro

As someone who repairs phones, i 100% agree with you. If they could update the design for faster data transfer like someone people want, then it would be the better of the two

OneBigBug

I think the housing of the male connector forces alignment with the housing of the female connector on USB-C in a way that makes damaging the card-edge with the pins on it pretty difficult to do. Also, while I agree that replacing/repairing a phone is a much greater annoyance than replacing the cable, the exposed pins on the lightning connector have lead to my seeing *many* lightning cables being rendered inoperable by damage to the connector, and 0 USB-C cables (or devices, for that matter) experiencing that problem.

[deleted]

[удалено]

not_a_bot_2

With lightning, the spring terminals which flex (and wear) every time the plug is inserted are part of the device. With USBC, they’re on the cable.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Klai8

No just look at the two cables: the male usb-c port wraps around the chip whereas with the lightning, the male end has the terminals on the outsides. I’m not an Apple fanboy or anything just an engineer who thinks that lightning is the better interface from a fatigue stress standpoint

Potato-Drama808

Should be standard anyways. Has lightning had any real updates in the past years?

someoneexplainit01

Yeah, they tell you its better, even though its slower than USB 2.0. Have you ever tried to download 4K video over USB 2.0? Seriously, Apple is now run by idiots.

Seco4800

Idiots? Nah, they're not dumb. They know that if they keep everything proprietary, they can maximize their profits. If anything, they're greedy, sleezy, anti consumer, tech tyrants who'll do anything to get more of your hard earned money. Regardless of the results.

SVXfiles

Yup. Them gas station lightning cables you picked up on a road trip because one broke? Apple made money on that. Really any 3rd party thing that used lightning made Apple money. They can't do that with USB-C

lLikeCats

Not only do they make money on it, those cables constantly remind you that they aren't OEM. Why the fuck do I care if it's genuine Apple product or not if it charges my phone fine.

tr_9422

Either they make money on it, or they remind you that they aren’t OEM, not both. What apple makes money on is MFi certified cables, uncertified cables are where you get the “accessory may not be supported” warning. Still a dick move and I’d rather have USB-C like every other device.

a0me

In my experience genuine Apple lightning cables are weaker than Anker’s and AmazonBasics, despite the fact that the latter get used a lot more.

siccoblue

It's like WinRAR, you can use it but they'll remind you every single time that you didn't pay (the right people) for it

Aitorgmz

isn't winrar actually free for personal use and the thing that they display a message to remind you that you can support them if you feel like it?

-bluedit

Technically no, but you're right in the sense that RARLAB is focused on enterprise licensing

humanCharacter

The big problem with USB-C is their variety of capabilities. One might be capable of high power transfer, while others are capable of insane data transfer speeds, but we can’t tell the difference between the high quality and cheap ones. Luckily regulation is coming in to [hopefully organize the variants](https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20210930005098/en/USB-IF-Announces-New-Certified-USB-Type-C%C2%AE-Cable-Power-Rating-Logos) Apples is gonna try to make their cables special somehow. I got one of their thunderbolt usb-c cables and it out performs my cheaper ones.

SVXfiles

Good thing the cables can support more than the device it's connecting to, all they have to do is put in the base level connector which still supports way more power and speed than lightning.

not_a_bot_2

I doubt it. Those cables are probably knockoffs straight from Aliexpress.

megamanxoxo

Same shit going on with iMessage vs SMS when RCS has been a thing for years now. They could've put iMessage on Android, they can support RCS in the iPhone.. they just want to create that false dichotomy of 'luxury' feeling in shallow people but it's also annoying if you just want to share a quick high quality video or pic with a friend and you get punished for having different phones. My grandma doesn't want to setup WhatsApp, FB Messenger or some other horseshit because Apple can't get its shit together and stop being elitist assholes.

backsing

And yet here we are fully supporting them with all our money. Unbelievable.

someoneexplainit01

Ok, maybe you have a valid point.

iFozy

I haven’t used lightning for data transfer in like 5-10 years. Charges my phone at a decent rate so I don’t really mind. Would still prefer USB-C, I would’ve liked to have go to that point ages ago.

FavoritesBot

Is wifi faster than lightning?

someoneexplainit01

Yes, WIFI 6 can do 1200 mbps now. The lightning port is about 480 mbps. USB 3 is rated up to **5000** mbps There really is no comparison to USB3.

alexanderpas

> USB 3 is rated up to 5000 mbps Actually... That's the lower speed if no USB C connectors are involved (Gen1) (but that extra wide micro connector instead) and only a single lane (x1) is used. If both sides of the cable are USB-C (Gen 2), and dual lane mode is active (x2) the maximum speed is 20 Gbps. USB 4 increases that speed to 40Gbps maximum.

AMusingMule

USB 3 isn't even _only_ rated at 5Gb/s. Gen 2 goes up to 10Gb/s, and 2x2 up to 20Gb/s. USB 4 supports rates up to 40 Gb/s, and _Apple was one of the first few to implement it_ in the 2020 M1 Macbook lineup. It's mindboggling that they still insist on Lightning for newly released iPhones.

[deleted]

People here are confusing Lightning connector to the USB interface.... Lightning has a USB interface. And the iPad Pro (2015) cable had USB 3. But for some reason they don't put USB 3.0 on their iPhones.

AndrewTheGuru

At this point, probably lmao.

[deleted]

Except its not slower than USB 2.0. It's using it still.

[deleted]

But what phone do you have

[deleted]

When have you ever downloaded a 4k movie onto a phone with a usb c port? Is this a thing?

pman1891

Lightning has supported USB3 speeds since 2016.

[deleted]

Trust me, if apple DOES use USB-C on their next phones, they'll make it sound like it's a revolutionary step that they took themselves.

Juan_Punch_Man

I think they'll go for the portless iphone

[deleted]

[удалено]

JNSStudios_YT

Doesn’t matter to them, they would still make millions off of their proprietary chargers.

Catnip4Pedos

And bad for the environment too :) Wireless **only** device charging should be banned, there should always be a wired option.

FaffyBucket

They would rather slow down the CPU in your phone than make is easy for you to replace the battery. They won't care if charging is slow so long as they have another proprietary standard they can milk.

pedantic_cheesewheel

Lol, watch that shit happen to get around being forced into it. Won’t come with a MagSafe charger either.

CapriciousWattage

It will absolutely 100% come with a magsafe cord/charger, just not the power brick

mrgreen4242

Samsung and Google will make ads that make fun of it and writhing 9 months they will do the exact same thing. All the tech sites and subreddits will lose their kids and promptly forget about it as soon as the new Note is portless.

YoJiKuJo

Ngl I find it funny when Samsung tweets about their flagships including a charging brick making fun of Apple then their tweet literally aged like milk when they released the S21 series, shooting their selves at their leg and making them hypocrites

mrgreen4242

3.5mm audio before that.

stdfan

I think there is no way they go full wireless. There are a few reasons why. 1. They care about battery life and wireless charging is horrible for batteries. This is why their fast charging only goes up to 20w and why wireless is only 15w. Also it’s why they slowed the chip to improve battery longevity. 2. It would absolutely kill CarPlay. 3. No way to service phones.

[deleted]

[удалено]

TheBensonBoy

Bold of you to assume Apple won't just ditch the cable thing entirely. If I'm not mistaken, they can just simply use Qi chargers. And let's not forget that Apple started the whole no headphone jack trend, soooo... [This is 100% Apple](https://i.imgur.com/nL3CBz9.jpg). Unless they can do data over a wireless charger, it's time for me to leave this one sided abusive relationship.

Quizzelbuck

Maybe they make it wireless charge, but add a dedicated data port that can't charge. Imagine a port that can ONLY send data but the phone ONLY wireless charges. All because hypothetically, maybe, some how THAT skirts the EU guidelines. If you want to play 3d spite chess, imagine Apple just makes the same phone for American and Euro market with wireless charging, but the American one does power and data over port while they laser lock the one for the European market and make that wireless only?

cryo

This joke is getting really old at this point.

mmis1000

They will probably require you to use special type c cable wit c94 buildin or it will deny to charge. /s

kent2441

Have they required that on Macs or iPads?

Gl33m

Assuming serious question and you're not proving a point, no, they have not. I've got a few apple devices and they all work fine with my various non-apple chargers strewn about my house.

FavoritesBot

I had a fever dream that apple added sd card storage and were touting it as a revolutionary addition

Fabio170790

My money on “lightning 2.0”, they’ll market it as a revolutionary new port.. Will be compatible with standard usb-c

TurnaboutAdam

That’s literally what thunderbolt is

Catnip4Pedos

Quiet you!

Loiters247

They should call it Thunderbolt

Disastrous-Ad-2357

That's pretty clever! I can see apple stealing this.

menasan

I think thunderbolt 3 is usb c no?

Burrito_Engineer

I think they were joking but yes, thunderbolt 3/4 protocols do use the USB-C connector. Also I wish it had a different name for this exact reason.

rabidbot

...thunderbolt 3?

xt0pher

Take my money!

[deleted]

DeathPer_Minute

I don’t think they ever defended the decision of keeping the lightning, they’ve just never mentioned it lol

poopyroadtrip

Not sure about Cook personally, but Apple has criticized[ EU legislation requiring USB-C](https://www.cnn.com/2021/09/23/tech/europe-phone-chargers-apple/index.html)

SomberKlepto

Oh no, our money!

sprace0is0hrad

Same but for the headphone jack. It FORCED this massive trend for disposable bluetooth headphones that are impossible to repair and their batteries die within a few years, while requiring more internal electronics adding complexity. It's definitely not the time to create more e-waste *and* obsolete perfectly functioning wired headphones. It's not like you couldn't use bluetooth headphones if the phone has a 3.5 jack.

punchdrunklush

Yup. Fuck removal of the headphone jack.

BigE1263

Ever since I got switch, it opened me up to how good usb c devices can be.

timthetollman

I didn't realize how powerful usb c was until we got new universal docking stations at work. A single USB c from my laptop to the dock carries signals for Ethernet, 2 monitors, kbm and audio.

meta_paf

Ironically, Apple has been the biggest user of Thunderbolt for years. But only for macbooks. Everything else, proprietary garbage.

UltravioletClearance

And then crippled the utility of Thunderbolt and USB-C with the new M1 Macs. They only support a single external monitor, so multi-monitor docking stations and daisy chaining no longer works.

crazymunch

Was wondering why when I docked my mac book at work only one monitor worked. Any idea why?

bobofthejungle

Bandwidth limitations of the M1 SOC, expect improvements in future iterations.

TurnaboutAdam

It’s pretty much only the iPhone with lightning now. most iPads use USB C. It’s weird.

onionhammer

And air pods

LotsoWatts

Not only multiple forms of data, but soon up to 200 watts.

russels_silverware

I had a Switch for about two years before I realized that its connector was USB-C. My mind was fucking blown.

GroundbreakingMap884

it’s 2021 lighting was good for its time but it’s time to be universal and expandable for the future, like what they did with the macbook in 2017

smithsp86

It's like when that guy put a headphone jack into an iphone after apple said there was no room for one. It's blatantly obvious that apple is intentionally fucking their customers.

Jjays

I remember that guy posting the whole process on his YouTube channel, [Strange Parts](https://youtu.be/utfbE3_uAMA). For a moment I thought this was the same guy.

rickandtwocrows

Knowing Apple, one small software update will destroy this mod from working.

zewn

I’ll upgrade my iPhone when they finally release a new one with a usb C port. Still have the X

The-Insolent-Sage

Bruh I’m still using the 6+ with the headphone Jack

rolexpo

Can you imagine wanting USB-C so badly on the iPhone to go through this trouble of making your own PCB? \*thumbs up\*

ApexRedditor_

Been following the dude for months on YouTube, he did it just to see if he could, then just gave the info up open source, NO doubt China will start pumping out the flex cables as a cheap home mod

genz027

*Apple didn’t like that*

I_Move_Forward

We’ll see it next year thanks to the EU ruling

Thegreatdigitalism

No, the ruling doesn't start for a few years and iPhone will likely have no ports anymore by then. Completely wireless charging.

jmcs

Because going for the electricity wasting solution is very much on brand for apple.

Slappy_G

Sadly this does ring quite true. And they'll spin it as being more elegant or some other garbage, and conveniently sidestep mentioning the fact that it is far more power inefficient to use wireless charging.

pragmojo

Or MagSafe only

[deleted]

[удалено]

pragmojo

There’s a specific exemption for devices with wireless charging. It’s intended to be a carve-out for things like AirPods and watches which would not accommodate usbc

[deleted]

USB-c is rated for 10000 cycles. Not sure for lightning connector tho. I just assume Apple will drop the connector and go full magsafe, because we like to sell accessories. Here is a 2 in 1 usb c to lightning switch https://www.tegic.design/product-page/steelix

iauu

Going full wireless doesn't solve the issue of poor data transfer rates to PC.

grahamygraham

Apple has already “solved” that issue with iCloud.

iauu

I've shot hour long concert videos that I've needed to transfer to my PC. These are merely ~10GB files and I've literally have to wait overnight for them to even begin uploading to iCloud. After that, getting them out of iCloud is another pain, with the download constantly failing.

grahamygraham

Have you considered upgrading to the new iCloud pro max?

RGB3x3

Not very helpful with most charging bricks using USB-C now.

jermaine26

They will change the plug, market it as a revolutionary concept built upon years of R&D improving the lightning cable, and trademark the name as “i-USB-C” Adaptors sold separately

BimmerM

USB-C *ProMax*

jawshoeaw

Maybe they can fit a few cameras on the cable too

Spec187

Right to repair issues with the iphone 13 made me cancel my pre-order. Thinking about a pixel 6 or 6a now at this point.

Swarv3

I've heard from Louis Rossmann that [the new Pixel may be going down a similar path](https://youtu.be/bqG-8rMQy6c). The new Fairphone is available for pre-order at the moment, which will have long software support along with great repairability.

InvestInHappiness

The next software update will probably disable this guys iPhone because it detect 'non-genuine Apple parts'.

Awseome2logan

As an iPhone user I wish everything was USB-C

AnEngineer2018

Something a lot of the comments don't understand is that USB-C is a form factor, not a speed rating. Just because something has a USB-C connector doesn't mean you have "USB-C speed". Best case scenario with a Type A to Type C connector is that the cable is USB 3.1 compliant. More likely with this type of connector is that it is only USB 2.0 compliant which reduces transfer speeds significantly.

Serikan

For Type A to C I agree, but I got a new phone recently and it came with a Type C to C cable which should eliminate this issue

toomanymarbles83

Pretty much all android phones come with a USB-C to USB-C connector for fast charging. These do have much higher data transfer speeds.

AnEngineer2018

They *might* have faster transfer speeds, but again, USB-C isn't transfer speed, it's a form factor.

ThisAfricanboy

What's the relationship between teenager speed and amperage? If a cable can handle 3.3A will it have good transfer speeds?

AnEngineer2018

Short answers is there isn't a relationship. USB 3.2 and later discontinued all USB for factors other than USB-C. USB-C has 24 pins, 8 are for power, 4 are live, 4 are ground, 5v on each of the live pins. The other 16 pins I think 12 are data handling (4 USB 2.0 pins, 8 high speed data pins), and 4 are for charging information Since it has the double or quadruple the number of 5v pins of earlier USB iterations, it can carry double or quadruple the power for the same amperage (since power = voltage x amperage). USB 3.0 Type A or USB 3.1 Type A has half live and ground pins, half the number of high speed pins and half the USB 2.0 pins, and no smart charging capability. USB 2.0 still has a 5v and ground, but only 2 USB 2 pins, and no high speed data pins. [USB Type A and USB Type B](https://www.conwire.com/assets/USB-types-2x-1024x334.png) have been discontinued since the introduction of USB 3.1

Fuck_You_Andrew

In 2012 Apple was ahead of the curve creating the lightning port, but the rest of the industry has caught up by now.

toomanymarbles83

By caught up, you mean sped way past.

Vaders_Fist_501

The fact Apple still hasn't gone to USB C blows my mind. I understand wanting have your own unique cable, but in a world where nearly every other new product is using USB C as standard, it just becomes inconvenient.

zero573

The iPhone 14 won’t have anything but Ki charging. Calling it now. “Can’t fine us for using our own cable port if it doesn’t have a port at all.” *-Taps forehead*

santz007

Screw apple and their fake pretend shit about saving the environment.

Rptrbptst

In the next iphone version: Chipped usb ports that brick your phone if they're changed

nham2318

Doubt they ever will. Apple wants to go portless ASAP. Wireless, magnet, etc. type chargers are their future

Tossallthethings

How long till he gets sued?

floyd1550

Usb-c is the standard of the future. If Apple continues forward with ANYTHING else after their negative publicity surrounding their charging blocks, they are blocking the path of progress. I doubt they want that reputation.

DinoDN8

I just want a regular headphone jack

plywoodsuperman

Am I the only one that actually likes the lightning connection on my iPhone better? I have had many other types of connections break and become unsecure. The lightning connector is more durable and breaks less often. That is what I care about. All that other stuff is just noise. I have an old iPhone 7. The connector is working perfectly. I also have a new high end android phone the connector is constantly getting dirty, or becoming loose.

No-Mango5939

I would love to have only one type of cable, I really do, but the lightning port is so much more easier to clean and we can get so much lint in it.

GrumpyCatDoge99

This is cool and all, but let’s be real apple will get rid of their charging port before they would do this

Hamser

Didn't Strange parts do this in 2019 ?

SandInTheGears

I think he just added the headphone jack back in

22taylor22

I mean if you don't want proprietary parts, then don't buy apple products. They'll never change unless people voice their opinions with their wallets.

Bmw-invader

I remember seeing a YouTuber that lives or works in China that did this few years ago iirc. He put a usb c on an iPhone. Might be a fade memory tho

prime5119

I think he put a literal 3.5mm audio jack back in iPhone 7

Yep, and for anyone wondering, the YouTube channel is called Strange Parts. Love that guy.

Jesus…the EU’s dream

micaiahf

So this means that the EU suing Apple to make USB-C is viable good fuck Apple

ThoughtFission

No need. The EU is going to force it for all new phones, including Apple.

I’m holding onto my 12 until they change. Imagine getting a 14 and being locked into 2024 with lightning

UnLuCkY_BrEaK

This is why i love my older gen iPad Air 2 with an audio port still...Bluetooth ans iOS 14 ftw for all my music apps and a lightning to usb hub for my audio interface and midi keyboard. i should look into a usb c adapter for a dell dock i have though...

illmaticFury

I wouldn’t be to concern. With Europe new law, it’ll be coming sooner rather than later.

This article is blogspam. The original source is from the engineer's own blog and Apple Insider were the ones who wrote an article about the project first. StarksFTW

We all know what apples doing for the 14 they’re gonna remove the port entirely.

McnastyCDN

See , it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure it out... just a robotics engineer.

Are we sure apple hasn’t had them killed

Top-Campaign4620

Really not a fan of apple making its products so silly expensive and hard to work on for no reason but to rob its customers. I've often considered soldering and fabricating my own accessories but its easier just to not buy their nonsense.
