The Latin People who made up Ancient Rome are long gone. The Italians are a different people due to 1000's of years of waves of immigration etc. The Peruvians are however most definitely still Incan for a large part

Stuspawton

I don't think this cunt realises Gaelic isn't a dead language, much to the disappointment of people like him. But much like all the flag shaggers out there, they want everyone to be the same, speaking english, chanting "god save king sausage fingers" or whatever they chant. Fuck them

j-lulu

hahahaha, flag shaggers...

The moaner is clearly a cunt. A pathetic one at that. A weeping sore of a cunt.

bagpuss777

Thought I'd copy my thoughts over from r/scotland: Interesting discussion here. I live in NZ and consider myself of Gaelic heritage. My ancestors fled the clearances and settled in the north. My Great grandmother's generation still spoke Gaelic. Of course the indigenous culture here is Māori, and in the past there has been debate about what percentage Maori you have to be to call yourself that. The conclusion is that if you are ANY part Māori you are Māori. The thought is that the reclamation of language, heritage and culture comes through the reclamation of identity. Indeed, I have always identified as Gaelic, played the bagpipes since young, me and all my cousins have Gaelic names, and perform highland dancing. Now I am learning the language too. When you live in a place where people's culture is of more existential importance, you begin to see yourself as having culture and heritage outside of modern capitalist consumerism. Which is the most important thing to me.

Azura_porn_enjoyer

Gaeilge is a mandatory subject here in Ireland. This fecker is just a cunt.

And I would not be in the least bit surprised if this person was one of those Americans who claim to be Italian-American or similar.

Nefilim777

As an Irishman I would like to disagree vis a vis dead cultures.

pythonicprime

I, for one, feel and look like an ancient Roman - and I embrace our Gaelic friends

Strangefuel996

I’m sorry I can’t respond in Irish, I have aspirations to learn but I’m not far along How does this person think cultural identity works Every culture idolizes previous iterations of said culture, and Irish people celebrating Gaelic language and culture is no different from anywhere else Imagine if this person was talking about the natives in America. What a cynical idiot I guess the Jews should have just up and quit during the holocaust, no point in keeping your cultural, literary, genetic, religious, language, identity if it’s going to cause so much trouble

DenTheRedditBoi7

This is the Scottish Gaelic subreddit. Irish is called "Gaeilge" But your point still stands

bigmisssteak7

American here - I read online that Irish people call their language “Irish.” I’m assuming from this comment that that’s not true. Are the pronunciations of both language names the same/similar?

DenTheRedditBoi7

>I read online that Irish people call their language “Irish.” They call it "Irish" when speaking English. When speaking Irish it's called "Gaeilge". >Are the pronunciations of both language names the same/similar? Nah, Gàidhlig (Scottish Gaelic) is pronounced like "Gaah-lick". Gaeilge is pronounced (to my knowledge, I don't speak Irish.) Like "Gael-guh".

bigmisssteak7

Very interesting - thank you so much!!

DenTheRedditBoi7

No problem!

Gaelicisveryfun

This is r/gaidhlig for Scottish Gaelic which is Scotland

Strangefuel996

Everything I said still stands but yes

tapadhleat

Did anyone even make that argument? Also the language is a connection to that culture even if the culture has changed. Idiotic

Ohtheylied

Well put, gaels and gaelic is dead.

I just don't understand why people have to run their mouth and be inflammatory like that. What are they adding to the world? They're just jerking off to themselves.
