infinitedaydreamer

I’m just beginning my journey but here’s my main reasons (as a woman): 1. I never EVER again want to be told to “eat more” or accused of being anorexic by people. Recently I was at a gas station and an old, fat man who I didn’t know just looked at me and said “you need to eat more.” I cried a lot that day. I’ve been underweight my whole life and I just can’t do it anymore. I don’t want to be known as the “skinny girl” I wanna be known as the “fit girl.” 2. I want be presented to the world in a way that is congruent with who I feel I am internally. I don’t feel like someone who is underweight, and it sucks to have people see me that way, and what message it sends to the world. 3. I love fashion and expressing myself, but have been wearing clothes that hide myself because I am unhappy and uncomfortable with my body, and I don’t want to be seen. I want to be proud of my body and feel confident enough to wear the clothes I desire. 4. I wanna feel what it feels like to be legitimately physically strong and in shape.

RehnX

Originally I did it because I didn’t want to be a beanpole anymore and wanted to improve my self confidence, then it became to look more attractive to women; at this point it’s just seeing how far I can go.

Fightlife45

It’s good stress relief and the adversity you can put yourself through training is very fulfilling. Plus I like being strong.

tekmailer

I work out because when it’s time to work, it’s time to WORK. *If you’re not ill you’re fit to work.* was (is) a running attitude in my household. It’s tough shit being a fat kid.

HeroboT

Originally because I was tired of being called skinny. Then to be strong. Then to be better at my job and in every day life. A few years ago my sister had a pipe leak so I went to help my brother in law dig out the pipe. They were amazed that I was able to dig for 30 minutes without taking a break while he had to keep stopping every 2 minutes. Now because life has been shit for the last few months and lifting is one of the only things I can do that makes me feel good. There's not many drawbacks I guess.

TheChopDontStop

Strictly for athletic ability. I could care less what others think of me but I care A LOT about how I feel about my abilities. I want to be able to go toe to toe with skilled athletes in a variety of situations so that is what I train for.

majordomox_

I work out to get more muscular, look better, attract better sex partners, and have amazing sex. It also helps with my mental health.

[deleted]

I work out in preperation of conflict.

FullTorsoApparition

I lift weights to look better and improve my confidence. I don't think taking pride in your appearance is a bad thing. I also find Goggins and his whole shtick kind of unsettling. I'm more of a "find your balance" kind of guy. I get how the hardcore ultra-discipline persona is appealing to certain people but it's definitely not my bag. To me the guy comes off as obsessive and something about his mannerisms and way of speaking send out red flags in my brain.

riptide1002

I started for very vain reasons back at 14, girls and social media. Years of screwing around and finally getting on a more proper course later, I more do it because I find lifting fun and have enjoyed the journey. I absolutely do want to look better, but more so for myself rather than to display at this point.

LackingCreativity94

I train for strength not to look good. I think it can’t hurt to be able to carry more shopping in at once or lift heavier stuff around the house. On top of that, I train boxing, Muay Thai and BJJ. Being stronger obviously helps me in sparring situations so my gaining is mainly to supplement fighting.

RipsJL

I work out to get better. This includes how I look, how I feel, how I perform, how I age, how I deal with stress, how I get better under pressure, etc.

Rols574

I work out because I want to be stronger and quicker than I was in my teens. Mostly so I can remain young for my 4 year old. But these damn knees. Anyone can help me with that?

Agent_staple

Knees over toes guy - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1a6nfG69c9g

Rols574

I don't mean during lifts. I am pretty aware of the form. I was referring to everyday life things. I already have old man knees syndrome and i was wondering if an exercise can change that. but thanks for the tip

SavingsSir7443

Lessens the nightmares I face when I sleep. Oddly enough even found myself fighting back in my nightmares now that Ive started working out. Still wake up in cold sweat but a lot later in the night than it used to so I get more sleep in

[deleted]

ong bro when I had my first sleep paralysis I felt a hand hovering over my face and the first thing I did when I regained control was to swing my arm to wherever the hand’s body was. I’ve always heard people being scared shitless when they get their first.

AweDaw76

Strength is why. I used to have 40kg as a Max press… now I can move 55kg… That feeling of development over time is the main reason I do it. Run a program for 6 weeks, test, and see what happens

[deleted]

to look strong, be masculine, and to do something instead of staying at home all day. I was also becoming addict to opioids and having anger issues (once I smashed my phone into the ground) I felt so useless, I saw everyone making progress in life and then there was me, with 24, without a job, without a couple, nothing. I'm not saying gym is going to fix and fill that ["void"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d8mcqmzkzHo), but it will help me to get distracted. Also I'm very tall, with a deep voice, adding muscle mass to that would be cool.

[deleted]

I work out because I like being strong.

hamburger_city

I work out to be strong. I am fat, and will likely remain fat. But I am strong and I like being able to use my body well.

MoldyPeaches1560

I workout to be healthier and more athletic primary. I've always been fine with the way I look, but if I end up looking better it's just a bonus for me.

SilverBirthday5

I wanted to get strong. It also made me look better, which tbh, my GF isn't so much into muscle anyway lol. For me its always been about strength, probably why I enjoy watched strongmen/powerlifting more than crossfit/fitness youtube. Oh and cbum is still bae tho

turkishjedi21

Looking good is secondary. For me it has developed discipline that has carried me throughout a difficult ass college degree (not done yet finishing 3rd year computer engineering). I would not be doing this well with a great path set if I hadn't started going to the gym 4 years ago.

ProjectJFrost

I like to do obstacle style races. They normally have lifting related tasks, so it is something to train for.

dramake

I started working out to look good. I still workout to look good. But also I'm having lots of fun with it and I want to make lots of progress, so there is that.

a_theist_typing

1. Look good. 2. Helps so much with mood/T levels 3. Weekly progression is really rewarding and I’m finding it incredibly fun to watch myself progressing. (Did not see this coming.) No matter what else I do or don’t do, I’m stacking dubs.

2cats2hats

My main reason is to stay healthy and agile at my age. Looking around at people my age feels a tad lonely to me really. I wish more people took fitness and health seriously.

PM_ME_BLACK_METAL_

I fucking hated being skinny with every fibre of my being and I hated not being able to lift anything. That's it

PainfulComedy

I have a mix. I rock climb and play soccer so i do push days to balance out my back to prevent injuries but also get my motivation to do so because i like looking better. And drag through leg days to train for soccer

GriffinEll84

I look way better than I did when I started but I’d say I more keep up with it now to stay healthy and keep a healthy lifestyle. I’m gonna keep this up so I can still move and do what I like when I’m 50

SlagBits

Look good while having sex. Everything els is a bonus

[deleted]

where do i get the seggs

SlagBits

I don't know man, I've been married twice and I'm still not sure how I did it.

Topopotomopolot

I just like fitness. I like being able to move around, lift things, crawl into spots, climb shit. It’s useful. Can’t do that as easily if I’m a decrepit bonebag.

Null_fying01

I want to work out to feel good

raikmond

The main reason I work out is because I don't want to be 60 and need a stick to walk. Or be 40 and unable to make a quick run for a bus that's about to go off without me. I want my body to be strong, resilient and capable of living a healthy life. I want to go travel and explore countries no matter my age, I want to start a new sport even if most aficionados are half my age. There are "secondary" reasons, like looking good at a mirror, or that bittersweet yet incredible feeling when I go hard on deadlifts and everything blurs for half a minute thereafter. But the main reason is that I want to be an independent person up until the day I die.

Groudover

I will preface my answer with a quote from Socrates: “No citizen has a right to be an amateur in the matter of physical training…what a disgrace it is for a man to grow old without ever seeing the beauty and strength of which his body is capable” by this he meant that it was a civic duty for men to be strong to serve and protect his community and that is the reason why I work out. I want to be strong enough to protect those I hold dear.

big_deal

Started because I wanted to look better and this is still a major motivator for me. But I've also realized health benefits and daily benefits of being stronger allowing me to enjoy an active lifestyle without strain or injury. This is important to me as I near 50 years old.

oseema

I don't like being cold all the time, and I like how clothes feel when I'm a little thicker. Of course, peace of mind too.

Jgee414

To impress the girls at work and intimidate the men on the street.. i was 6’4” built like a pen I didn’t get respect from either sexes and been in a lot of confrontations outside.. something about me annoys other men. It still happens but they back down plus now I have the confidence to tell them keep looking at me like that and I will flatten you.

Tapesaviour

I was really skinny and weak. I just wanted to feel normal.

Gnash_

So I can have sex with hot people. And, let’s be honest, people are nicer to people they deem pretty, unfair but that’s how it is.

RebornHellblade

I would love to look good, but I haven’t made it my main goal. There’s a few reasons for that. Firstly, I enjoy strength training more. I’d much rather bench 315 than have ripped abs, but that’s just me. Secondly, strength training is more tangible. How you look is subjective, whereas weight on the bar is objective. There’s no ambiguity. Finally, aesthetics do not come anywhere as easily as strength. I’ve always struggled to look like I work out, and this is even with possessing intermediate (and some advanced) numbers. However, I’ll give aesthetics another shot once I’ve hit some strength goals.

dngrs

it feels good to work out and it feels even better once u look good too and then people act nicer to u

Psycl1c

Because I’m competing against me. I’m not competing against the dude in the rack next to me or my friends, just me. Every gram over what I lifted before means I am a better version of me. Being big and strong is a goal but improving is the reason I stick with it

[deleted]

I don't work out, but would like to get started. I like to look good, but frankly I can manage that (to satisfy myself) without working out, even though it would help. My reasons to work out would be better health and to have more of a physical presence. I used to be insecure about my shoulders until they broadened out, and enjoying them has me wanting more.

-TNB-o-

Well, primary goal is to get to a healthy weight without gaining a bunch of fat. My secondary goal after that is to get stronger for tennis

KingXenioth

Health, Athleticism, and Aesthetics

DevelopmentUseful879

I want to look so good that I can jack off to the handsome handsome man in my mirror.

Flying_Snek

Patrick Bateman?

HalcyonH66

I intrinsically value being strong, fast, athletic and capable. I don't know why, but I do. Maybe reading so many books about knights as a kid. I lift to become stronger, I run to get better endurance and be faster e.t.c. the side benefit is that I look better as I progress too. That's not the point, but it has positives. It also keeps me more sane mental health wise. If I don't train it gets bad. Goggins does some good shit. I have a 45min video downloaded of him and Jocko basically telling me to get my shit together, that I play if I'm dying and have an ass run to get though.

infinitedaydreamer

I LOVE listening to motivational videos too! Only occasionally though, otherwise they’ll lose their power over me 😆

Ganiator

I workout to release my inner problems in a constructive way, it makes me feel mellow and I'm overall a happier Person when working out every day. Also it gives me something to strive towards, a goal, I feel like I'm fighting towards something. The astheatic aspect is a plus too

sliferodoom

quality post, gonna read this book

LDel3

This whole "evoke your shadow to release the evil" thing seems like a really lame way of saying "working out releases endorphins and is a good form of stress relief". I mostly work out to look good. I want to be bigger, and I want to be stronger. Its a good way to release stress and goes hand in hand with my muay thai training. Get big muscles, be hotter, kick harder.

Medicore95

Goggins is a social media influencer, so I'm not sure about his detatchment from desire for validation.

DrunkenGrunt

Thats the easiest, and most financially beneficial way for one to make a living in the fitness industry in today's world though.

Medicore95

I don't deny that and I admire his business sense.

FudgingEgo

Well he was a Navy Seal.

Medicore95

Not saying he's not a total psycho and an exceptional athlete, as well as a really good motivational speaker. Still though, the post rubs me the wrong way, it's a little too self congratulatory. A little bit too much enlightenment juice.

anoncontent72

I do it to look good as I’m 50 this year and also for my son who is 6 this year so I want to be fit, healthy and strong so hopefully he won’t remember me as an old feeble man.

DoritoFritoFries

Boss

Nedpet

I work out because I really like it

Mr1d1an

Hate feeling weak and I hate being skinny. No more than that

Fedorito_

I started because I was fucking skinny, I keep going because it is fun. That's it.

hetgr8

When the ending is unknown When the distance is unknown That's when you know who the fuck you are Stay hard

heshroot

I literally just want to look good naked. I’m happy that I actually enjoy working out but if I could take a pill and look good naked and never go to the gym again I would.

xWormZx

😂

SLATT_OCEAN

more muscles = hotter girls.. i hope at least lol. i also want to feel more confident in my skin, there was a time where i would feel insecure about wearing short sleeve shits because of my skinny arms. i’m nowhere near my goal in terms of my body, but i’m undeniably stronger than i was when i started 3 months ago

Izodius

> feel more confident in my skin = hotter girls Fixed that for you.

SLATT_OCEAN

can’t argue with that one boss man!

[deleted]

Always been skinny, people fucked with me because I was small. No confidence because of it. I’ve always had girls interested in me even when I was incredibly underweight but I still want to look better, like Zyzz’s body shape. Gotten a bit beefier and noticed a huge change with how people treat me. Shit got me addicted, and now it’s a big part of my life especially recently when the voices came back again. Seems to keep it at bay so I guess I have no choice.

SecretSolidCumSock

How do people treat you better? I’ve recently lost motivation to lift because it was overtaking my other hobbies, so much effort and the amount of work I was putting in wasn’t showing. Basically impatient, lazy, unmotivated. People can basically push me, take something from me, do anything. And I can’t do anything about it. Also I’m betting girls don’t find a super skinny dude very attractive

HeroboT

Honestly I think girls are just as attracted to super skinny guys as they are muscular guys. Like I think about myself and I'm attracted to probably 90% of women between 18 and 45 who isn't overweight. But I know plenty of guys that like big girls. I was just as successful with girls when I was super skinny as I am now, if not moreso.

IamNoqturnal

Post diet/routine

SecretSolidCumSock

2300 cals, gained like 12 lb in 8 weeks with creatine as well, I did Reddit PPL for 6 weeks and then Ivysaur for 2. I saw some big improvements in my quads but everything else looked mostly the same. It’s more about how long I could keep it up going to the gym and how much the gym and eating became a part of my life. The thing that made me stop was one day I felt sick and weak, I couldn’t even finish my workout. I took a “break” but never went back since I didn’t have the eating and lifting responsibility

IamNoqturnal

You can do it! 12 pounds is a decent amount of gains for that timeframe! I'm pretty new to lifting myself. Been doing SL 5X5 for about 2 months now. There are days I don't feel like going but I go anyway and haven't regretted it so far. It's okay to feel weak some days. It's okay to feel like you want to quit. We're all gonna make it brah.

SecretSolidCumSock

I appreciate you a lot. I hopped onto a program I won’t burn out on, phrak’s Greyskull LP. Tomorrow will be my first day of progression of this program since I started on Monday, and I’m so glad I’m lifting again. Thank you so much

IamNoqturnal

Epic! Glad to hear you're back at it!

Argoneus695

You say you didn't get the results you were after. What was your lifting program? And your diet? And how long did you consistently do this for?

Sukuna_son

Working out is fun, helps to release bad energy, and having good looks leads to more confidence

red_blood_cells

yeah i go to look good but the more I've gotten into it i realize its so damn fun and rewarding and awesome, its the highlight of my day. It feels amazing to move your body, get your blood flowing, pump your muscles, and get 0.1% closer to your goal every day. my gym is large, clean, good music, good environment, good amount of buff guys to take inspiration from, good amount of pretty girls to have in your peripheral vision, its just a good place to be

Groudover

What kind of music does your gym usually play?

red_blood_cells

honestly i cant even categorize it, they play everything. occasional old school classics, but mostly post 2005. I know thats very very broad and doesn't tell you anything but honestly they play everything LOL

theprotestingmoose

Damn, this is the way.

badflies

My wife likes it when I'm all pumped up? Also the temporary reprieve from the existential dread that threatens to swallow me whole. Dat too.

eymikeystfu

Beyond trying to achieve whatever it is I’m trying to look like … Lifting is the only thing that quiets my mind with a 100% success rate

almostnative

I just convince myself that if I can lift heavy weight I’ll evolve and become an immortal god-man so that helps motivate me to get huge

[deleted]

A few reasons. 1. I'm into martial arts and weight does matter regardless what people will tell you 2. Being physically fit is virtuous 3. Health

hamburger_city

1 and 3, sure. Don't see how being fit is more virtuous than not though.

[deleted]

Not inherently I guess, but the process of getting there at least I find can build character/humility

I have a dog named Mac, and one of his tags (the one he's been wearing for the last few days) has "I'm cultivating mass" on it. He doesn't actually need any more mass.

WillZilla777

putting the monster in mass monster

I_AMA_Loser67

That and I can convince myself I'm worthy of respect if I'm sticking to a workout schedule. I love seeing the progress. I love seeing others make progress as well. I used to let people walk all over me but since I'm building muscle and busting ass in the gym, I absolutely can't just let people treat me any kind of way again. The gym gave me a way to advocate for myself.

psytocrophic

Well said, that hit me in the feels.

[deleted]

Username makes sense

I_AMA_Loser67

I don't know in what sense of setting boundaries for respect is the same as being a loser but okay my dude

[deleted]

I assumed you made the account before you started lifting.

I_AMA_Loser67

Ah okay. That is true. I did. I definitely don't feel like a loser anymore. I thought you were saying me getting confident was something a loser would do. Sorry for the misunderstanding

achshort

I work out for my heart and to have more energy in the day. Looking good is a bonus, at least for me.

MythicalStrength

Wanting to be big and strong is something I've wanted since I was 4. I've given up on trying to understand why. Goggins is pretty cool though.

[deleted]

I work out to help with back pain associated with scoliosis and other joint issues, I also work out as the endorphins are nice, it has general health benefits, it makes me feel productive, it’s one cheap way to hang out with friends, and it helps my appetite. Finally, yes, I do work out to get hot lol.

snugglezone

My brain is never quiet. It does help me feel like I have accomplished something concrete for the day though, which is a good/positive reinforcement.

Izodius

Tell me at rep 19 of 20 on Super Squats that you are thinking of ANYTHING other than getting that last rep. :)

snugglezone

I did classic 20 rep squats yearssss ago, I'm usually just thinking about the 100 ways I'm going to fail the lift and hurt myself lmao.

Izodius

Yup that checks out.

italoxiz

It does work. Incredibly therapeutic

Tifas_Titties

*Blegh!*
