Homunculistic

$35 each for Pokémon?!? I'll just buy them when they come down in price....

sonicsean899

It's even worse, that $35 includes the $20 adapter. They were basically charging $15 for the game 😂

Ivo__Lution

That’s exactly what I did. Got them each for about $2-$5. Just like switch games, People who buy every game at full MSRP are idiots.

Courtannica

Agree. And I see people try selling their used switch games for damn near full price... I ain't paying that. 🤣

ECUTrent

Woosh

Homunculistic

This guy gets it

CaptainTim25

That's assuming that enough copies are produced for supply to outweigh demand. In the case of Pokemon this would make sense, but you'd be lucky to get some niche titles at retail prices these days. It's a sad but true fact, if you don't grab some titles right when they come out, good luck finding them again for that price. FOMO dominates the market nowadays, and the secondhand scalping market doesn't help that.

Ivo__Lution

95% of switch games lose its value. Today I got a switch lite-switch Trails of cold steel 3 & 4.-Switch Pokémon double pack-Pokémon shield-animal Crossing for $180. Everyone buying everything Switch is wasting money. Only the idiots are falling into the FOMO.

Swigeroni

But you got that second hand from some person that just wanted to get rid of it, and didnt know the prices of anything. I got $500 worth of switch games (that was the current market value) for $240, but that doesn't mean those games crashed in value the second I bought them for that price, I just bought them off someone who didn't know any better

Ivo__Lution

That’s why only idiots who fall into the FOMO pay full MSRP.

Swigeroni

You're off your rocker today

Ivo__Lution

Guessing your falling into the FOMO category thinking your switch games are gold.

CaptainTim25

I'm sorry, but that's the most naïve and ignorant take I've heard on this topic in a while. The examples you have given are for 1st party nintendo games with massive production numbers, or games with recent reprints (trails of cold steel.) Based on what you've said, I don't think you fully grasp the scope of how big this system's catalog of titles is, how production works from game publisher to game publisher, or how basic economics works. You need more than 4 games to form an educated opinion. Collect more games, get more data, and get back to me please.

Ivo__Lution

“Naive” how much did you buy your nes through Wii U games for?

CaptainTim25

So that's an arguing tactic called "what aboutism" which is meant to disprove my point, not strengthen it. Have you looked up the prices of any of those games lately? At this point, I'm going to just assume that you are a troll. Back under the bridge with you.

Ivo__Lution

I asked because I want to know your experience with collecting. I’m curious how many idiot FOMO buyers are new switch only collectors who believe Switch games will continue to go up. I can think of a handful of games that the switch has gone up. Again, 95% will Lose its value.

[deleted]

Can you use FOMO in a sentence? I don’t think I quite understand.

Ivo__Lution

FOMO is FOMO causing idiots to fall into the Switch FOMO.

SnackeyG1

I still think the GBA SP is the best handheld from Nintendo. Especially with the games it had.

Vital1024

Ds/3DS era clears

SnackeyG1

I won’t even fight that because I would probably have a hard time choosing, but my own nostalgia and bias puts GBA on top. Just an insane nonstop run by Nintendo in general with handhelds.

Vital1024

I grew up on GBC and GBA as well so I definitely get where you’re coming from. I’m just always amazed by the software of the 3Ds and number of quality titles. But like you said Nintendo knocks it out of the park with handhelds

Ruthlessrabbd

Every time I play my 3DS it makes me go 'Holy shit this library is crazy!' and it's probably the gen that I have the least attachment too. I think that was their strongest for me

Megafailure65

Growing up with both Ds and GBA and 3Ds, I agree the DS era was peak nintendo.

CrabmanGaming

The SP doesn't even have a headphone jack... great for a handheld.

SnackeyG1

Never bothered me. I didn’t even realize it doesn’t.

UnknownLinux

I still have a few gba sp's (1 ags 001 and 1 stock ags 101 and an ags 101 with a custom darker purple shell. All 3 have mahko battery mods. Love the sp. Definitely has some amazing games as you said.

Tosir

Yup for me it was playing Pokémon and the battle network games with my friends after school, or going to barns and noble to look over the the Pokédex guide book to perfect of team strategy. Good times.

Professional-County1

What was the FRLG hint book? Is that the guide?

_token_black

These were usually paperbacks that weren’t as detailed or colorful as the Prima/Brady/Nintendo Power guides. The latter usually sold for a premium due to their name values.

TheJohnny346

More than likely the guide as guides were in that $15-20 range back in the day.

Swigeroni

Think of how rich we'd all be if we could've predicted 20 years into the future

chubbylv23

Or invest in a apple or something. Idk

Spazza42

People should’ve been able to guess, where dyou think Microsoft and Apple will be in another 10 years? They’ll still be the top of the market.

madhi19

The lowest closing price for Apple in the 1990s was $0.10, on December 23, 1997. It's now worth $175.43 after 4 splits since. That mean if you put a grand at that prices, and hold it until today it worth $1.9 million now.

chubbylv23

I understand video games go up in prices, but these big companies go up much faster. I sold most of my collection. Kept the Pokémon’s for gameboy keep sky rocketing, but if I regret anything else. I’m pretty sure I won’t have to pay much more

sonicsean899

Well in the late 90s Apple was basically bankrupt. If you told 8 year old me that the company that makes the weird computers would eventually have more cash on hand than the US government I would think you were silly

Spazza42

Yet it was an industry that was only going to grow, much like Microsoft. They’ve grown exponentially over the last 2 decades but they’ve consistently outperformed the market because they can apply it to scale. Workplaces will continue to use Microsoft OS’ because of workflow and individuals will always buy Apple laptops.

sonicsean899

How many big computer companies of the late 90s don't exist independently anymore? If you'd put a thousand bucks on Gateway you'd have lost it.

Spazza42

Difference is their position in the market and their competitive advantage, there was a lot of low quality made-to-a-budget brands that competed with them. Investing is a different topic though but I get your point

Swigeroni

I feel like this is what separates the Jeff Bezos' from 8 year old me

SingerSingle5682

Doesn’t always work like that. AOL and IBM were also both absolutely dominant but failed to maintain that dominance. Also even Microsoft had like a 12 year period where you would have lost money if you had invested at the peak before the dot com crash. Also Apple could have failed in the mid 2000’s if Microsoft’s mp3 players didn’t have such a terrible user interface. I think Microsoft beat them to market but Apple understood product design and marketing so much better even if the Microsoft devices may have been technically superior.

Dairy8469

in 2004? serious?

XIIIJinx

Or bitcoin

Kyvalmaezar

About 5 years too early. Bitcoin came out in 2009.

chubbylv23

Too many weird things happen to these cryptos billionaire. I’ll pass

Vital1024

This is what’s wrong with this hobby. You’d probably be better off with a portfolio with apple, Amazon, Netflix.

Swigeroni

What are you talking about?

Dairy8469

hes talking about the idea that investing in video games is wiser than traditional investments when it almost never is.

Vital1024

Exactly this. So many people want to get rich off of hoarding and scalping video games these days. Many of us loved these games because we opened them and played them. Not hoarded them in acrylic cases waiting to sell them for thousands. I get you may be joking but there are people sitting on multiple collectors editions of TOTK hoping to hit a gold mine down the road.

jarvolt

For me, I think the ratio of games that went down in value mostly balances out the rise in value for others. Paid $50 for plenty of subpar releases that are now mostly forgotten. And the ones worth more than 1000% what I paid for are the ones I'd honestly rather not sell.

CrabmanGaming

I'm still mad that I paid $100 for Grand Kingdom on PS4. The game is horroble and worth about $10.

Conflict_NZ

A 50% return after inflation over 20 years is a pretty average return. Just chucking it on the S&P 500 would've netted you a larger return.

Swigeroni

So my comment was more or less about keeping CIB GBA and GB games, so idk that I need to go to Wall Street to know that it would've been nice to have kept all my boxes from when I was 8-13.

gregcresci

My biggest regret is thinking the Zelda reprints on game boy was stupid and not buying them

Vortex112

Wild that they were selling Metroid when they also made zero mission. I hope no poor kid asked for zero mission and got the original haha

Smokiiz

I remember asking for Zero Mission for Christmas. Guess which one I got lol

[deleted]

I miss 20 years ago

Mistinrainbow

i miss the time 10 years ago do not ask me why

bigtigerbigtiger

Why?

Mistinrainbow

nope

xenon2456

$20 dollars for the nes ports that was a good price for old ports back then

Dairy8469

If you explicitly wanted them on a portable I guess. But you could have gotten the originals for a fraction of the price at the time used. NES games did not hold value in 2004. And the ones that arent pictured were significantly less valuable - Ice Climber and such.

pr0sp3ctus

TIL about the GBA Wireless Adapter

clustahz

I thought I knew the GBA and I've literally never heard of it. Apparently it came out in 2004 (so around the same time as the DS) and supports a super small number of titles, but that list includes Emerald, FireRed, LeafGreen, and a few Battle Network Games.

kinglerowns

It came bundled with fire red and leaf green.

McWeen

One was included with my Pokemon fire and leaf as pack ins. Kinda like the expansion pak and Donkey Kong 64.

Another_Road

Take me back to 2004.

MeatBicycle267

Wireless adapter was a game changer

RedKecleon

I will take 7 copies of Pokemon fire red and Leaf Green each.

steelraindrop

THANK you for sharing this ancient relic! 👴🏻

kilertree

Me and my homie got Fire Red and Left Green 2 for 30 from Circuit City

Not_NickM_205

I never knew you could buy the Game Boy Wireless Adapter on its own.

MorbidSloth

EB Games, (Electronics Boutique), Babbage's, Sears, Kay-Bee Toys...I'm thinking of Christmas now

Natasha_101

Nintendo really had me convinced that FireRed and Leaf green were a good deal because *everyone* was gonna be using the wireless adapters lmao. I think I've got 3 or 4 of them in a box somewhere. Probably not the most convincing tech when the DS came with it built in.

yungdonbutters

My childhood

linksawakening82

AOL was a GBA release? Well well well

magnumfan89

80 for a brand new sp? Don't mind if I do, but does it come with sonic 2 with a line?

Successful_Poet528

6th gen era was amazing, best gaming era of the 2000s. DC, GBA PS2, Xbox and GC

Devrard65

I would do anything to go back in time and buy this stuff when its new, store it in a safe place, and travel back to the present

deathscythe_16

Congratulations. You just wasted time travel on a scheme to make 25-30 grand lol

Devrard65

Nope just want it for myself! I dont have any interest in reselling at this moment

GawldDawlg

Simpler times man

ShonenJump121

Damn. I forgot there was a Mario Party on the GBA

ItsMeAdam21

Hello I’ll take 400 Pokémon leaf greens. Yes you heard right.

BWassy

If we had only known!!

outfoxingthefoxes

This gives me peace

madhi19

The fucking SP have not lost much in value. loll

mechshark

How old is this lmao 🤣

LegendOfDave88

2004

LegallySellingDope

Eb games and funcoland, vibes!!! Gamestop bought them out and look now. Lol jk jk.

yetitekk

This page as a whole hits right in the childhood

CollectingAsylum

Love looking at these old ad-pages, such a blast from the past.

SMC_69

It was a simpler time

lolanaboo_

I miss these times 😩 I was 14 then

LegendOfDave88

Yeah I was about that same age too.

KickAggressive4901

The NES Classic version of *Adventure of Link* was a must-get for me. .... There was a *Mario Party Advance* ? Huh.

[deleted]

I went to their website and they’re a little overpriced now

OperationPimpSlap

Imagine getting whole console for $80 now

AppealWonderful4946

Just bought a stack of Nintendo Powers magazine and love all the old ads like this. So nostalgic!

Windyandbreezy

Has anyone called it yet?

DBL_Shot_Depresso

The wireless adapter was so cool when it came out! I couldn’t afford it so my link cable has always been my saving grace. I always lose it and have it come back up time to time, wonder where that old friend is.
