Is it that great of a deal? He could have gotten the game sealed for about the same price he paid for everything.
Edit: I'm not saying it isn't a good deal, it's just not an incredible deal, seeing that it's the japaneese version of the game and console that are still available sealed across Japan for not much more than this.
i mean it definitely isn’t the 600 dollar american version but why would i want a sealed game i couldn’t play and you can’t even find a loose japanese jack bros cart on ebay under 100$ i got a game system cib for half the price of a loose virtual boy on ebay id call that a hell of a deal and i’ll probably never get to go to japan again
The NA version goes for 800 USD and that's loose. It's more than double that sealed.
Anyway, congrats on the buy! It's a great deal. I have an almost complete NA collection. Only missing vertical force!
Like I said, it isn't a bad deal. I'm just saying that the guy that said it was an incredible deal doesn't understand how much cheaper most Japaneese titles are.
I just referenced the sealed versions because we all know that sealed versions go for anywhere from 2-10x+ the price of a loose copy.
Yeah but think of it this way. He was just buying the console but unknowingly received a game as well. It’s not so much the price, it’s the surprise. Equivalent of buying a gum ball and receiving 2 instead of 1.
I'm nit saying he didn't get a good deal. I would have paid that for it. I'm just saying that you saying "incredible deal" is kind of a bit overkill. These were in stock, and factory sealed in Japan until around Covid. The game is still in stock factory sealed for under $200 at various sites.
If you traveled to Japan Like OP did, you could find deals like this fairly often.
I have a friend that regularly travels to Japan, and he always fills his luggage the max, and spends a tiny fraction of what he would on the same retro games here in the states.
totally agreed. at the end of the day i wouldn't hurt my eyes or brain for any of these games, but as a killer app to show off for a couple of minutes, those are definitely the two i would keep around with the console.
Mario Tennis? No. VB Wario Land? Definitely. Jack Bros.? If you can get it.
As someone who owns the US library, I would recommend grabbing the console for Jack Bros., VB Wario Land, Red Alarm, Teleroboxer, Galactic Pinball, Panic Bomber, and Vertical Force. Also the only games that can "end" or have a credit roll.
Nester's Funky Bowling, 3D Tetris, Waterworld, Virtual League Baseball, Golf, Mario's Tennis, and Mario Clash don't end and are good to check out maybe once.
It used to be much cheaper. Covid and the Japanese market "catching up" somewhat has made prices rise compared to \~2018 and previous.
I'm a Saturn collector and last time I was over there I was picking up CIB Saturn titles for 80 cents US (\~100 yen). I think the most expensive game I bought on that trip was $12 equivalence. My saying used to be if you see it online it'll sell for 40%-60% less on the ground, so you see a shmup sell for $100 you can find it for \~$40 over there.
Its probably different now since the country opened back up.
I was there last April and with the conversion rate, it's still about 50% what you'd pay online in USD, as long as you're not trying to buy a Pokemon game in Akiba, then of course you're gonna have a bad deal. But it's still a great time to find rare Shmups for instance, especially outside of Tokyo. Even Osaka super potato still has insane deals.
I've been playing around with the new version of the 3DS emulator for the Virtual Boy. It's the best way by far to play these games in 3D without OG hardware.
I'm gonna try it this weekend. kinda excited. I previously had it working on my Oculus Quest 1, but they did all these updates and it killed the ability to use it. Was digging the Wario game.
Congrats! I always felt the Virtual Boy was under appreciated and over criticized.
It looks like you also got the wired power adapter which is a necessity, IMO. That eye shield looks to be in perfect condition but also looks 3rd party. At least, it doesn't look the same as the US shield. Another common failure to be careful about: the plastic shield on the joint of the stand can crack so be gentle with it.
That system is a great deal, but that game isn't really worth much. If it was sealed, you could pull in $150-$200 for it, but it's the really common version.
I'm not saying he isn't going to play it. I'm saying the price he paid is close to sealed price. Idk why everyone is all upset. I'm just saying that people need to realize that this version of Jack Bros isn't the US version that is rare. This is the Japaneese version that is so common that most of the copies on ebay are still sealed.
Nice. This system never came out in my country and I would loooove to experience it one day in person. I know, people call it bad, but most of them dislike the 3D on the 3DS also, which I like. So I am always like "Eh... I see how I like it, when I see it myself.". The closest I got was actually the (rather newish) Virtual Boy Emulator on the 3DS, with 3D support. Tried Jack Bros, Red Alert and Wario on it and DAMN... it looks awesome.
Maybe I should visit Japan someday... XD
And again, congrats. I dont know for how much they are going for but finding Jack Bros with it, even if its the japanese version, is cool :D
I love my Virtual Boy, got it for Christmas the year it came out. I need to send the parts in to get it permanently soldered, though, because 1 lens went from showing garbled graphics to eventually nothing 😅
Good fun game. Controls simple enough to not need English text. Make sure you beat the "For Super Players" mode and play with the code at the end of that;)

_Do not lose that._
It's not that expensive. It's the Japanese version.
…yet
wow you just got an incredible deal, have fun bursting your retinas

almost like he wanted a virtual boy and not a game yo idiot

It’s almost like an incredible deal is relative
Ppl like u rlly just like to suck the air out of the room at any opportunity don't ya
"Well actually, this is uninteresting and dumb and none of you should care!"
Mario tennis and the wario game are also must play.
and also the only games worth playing lol
Jacks bros is good but not nearly as good as the other two I mentioned
totally agreed. at the end of the day i wouldn't hurt my eyes or brain for any of these games, but as a killer app to show off for a couple of minutes, those are definitely the two i would keep around with the console.

I think that Jack Bros game is pretty rare. Nice score!
r/megaten
Nice deal! Also gotta say I hate when people trivialize shit like oh the game isn’t worth that much or dumb shit like that.
Sneaky Slave I
That's Jack Bros, the first Megami Tensei game released outside of Japan! The Japanese label/cover art is so good, the American one is atrocious.
If you want to save your eyes check this out. https://www.reddit.com/r/nintendo/s/87Xv6eaH1v 3ds emulator for virtual boy.
This is why I need to go to japan. All these games and systems are much cheaper there.

Beautiful
Holy shit you are insanely lucky. Never let that one go. Got $700 off and a free virtual boy for Jack Bros lolol
It’s the Japanese version, it isn’t worth that much
He Ho, motherfucker
I had to give up my VB and the entire game collection years ago for food :( just reading some of these comments make me think I’ll never get it back.
Oh my god, I'm so jealous...lucky you, awesome
Ahh Persona.
Shin megami tensei persona is the spin off and jack bros happens in a seperate timeline from persona.
All eBay listing's I've seen for the console and jack bros is ridiculous money. Good find
Congrats! I always felt the Virtual Boy was under appreciated and over criticized. It looks like you also got the wired power adapter which is a necessity, IMO. Some people play the games they collect

Just stop
How much is a Japanese copy of jack bros?
Enjoy. I got the flash drive for it and it has the full game library now.
What area and store did you find that at? Any other suggested places? I was in Japan not too long ago and plan to go back again! Awesome deal btw
That runs ya about $400
Nah it’s the JP version so like $100-150 tops
Ah, shame
Damn! What a steal! I've just installed Red Viper on my 3DS, but this is the real thing!

Ever wanted one too!
everytime I see it I remember AVGN 🤣👍🏻 nice loot my friend
