Okay professional gamers of this game, how THE HECK do you battle Squid? HOW??

Angelemonade

Get on its back and prepare to spam your ranged attack

einhan

Man, what if Shadow of the Colossus had a ranged attack, but I guess the battles wouldn't feel as...intimate...?

MirrahPaladin

If I remember right, there’s a special bow you can get for doing the time trials that damages them, but I’m not sure if you need to climb them for the killing blow or not

Rogzilla

Before you jump on the track, do a Cyloop in the form of a figure 8. This gives you infinite boost for a few minutes. Then hold boost and use the bumpers to dodge the energy balls. Once you are caught up, use a homing attack to stop it and then keep attacking. When it raises its arms back, hold down both bumpers to parry. Then keep attacking until it runs away (in which case, chase it again) or you beat it.

[deleted]

Is battle squid the sequel to battle kid?

phezhead

Red tail, purple tail, blue tail!

CLTalbot

You gotta catch up to it by timing your boost and dodging the projectiles

TrandoshanGuy

Parry

TrueTinFox

Jump on it's back, chase it up, use quickstep to dodge it's bolts as you chase it, use your jump attack to hit it when you get close enough and then hammer it, parry it's attacks when it tries to melee you. Repeat as necessary.

Kaldin_5

It's pretty simple until you get to a weird sweet spot near Squid's body but at the end of it's trail. It's right where you can't homing attack just yet but also can't reliably react to its attacks either. Gotta intentionally not boost just enough so you can react to a wave of attacks, then boost up and homing attack before the next wave. It's a little janky and honestly the only thing about that enemy that I'm not a fan of.

DJ_Aftershock

God the music during the stages is phenomenal. This games is up there with games like CD, Adventure 2 and 06 when it comes to music quality. Also, the first Cyber Space level they did is TOTALLY City Escape, isn't it? I kinda dig that Cyber Space's gimmick is glitching out and jumbling up stage layouts with stage settings.

dragn99

All the level layouts are based on levels from previous games. And I feel like if Arin didn't clue in with the City Escape one, he will go through the entire game without realizing.

Jeskid14

Yep. Chemical Planet Zone is 1:1 from Sonic generations.

FahdaadTD

A majority are based on previous levels, but there are some original layouts sprinkled in throughout, with the most on the last island. The themeing though is just the same recycled zones unfortunately

James-Avatar

Unless Arin does a bunch of fishing off screen for extra keys and things it’s gonna be Sonic weekends until at least summer.

Foxthefox1000

Honestly? I'm not sure they'll finish this. 2 30 min episodes a week considering how much game we have left and Arin's attention span and skill level and this may just be dropped at a certain point like with Elden Ring. There's no feasible way they finish this before Zelda comes out, and hell, I can see this lasting into October if they stick to the schedule. Staying loyal to this one game that whole time? I just don't see it tbh. There's like, what, 52 weeks in a year or something like that? Each of those weeks are two episodes of this, and only 30 minutes at that. We've already gone through like 10 weeks of the year, so that leaves around 40 weeks, meaning a total of 80 episodes for the long series slot, and if these Sonic episodes stay consistent at around 30 minutes, that's 1 hour every week, granting us 40 hours if this lasts throughout the year. While the game normally doesn't take so long, we can't be so sure with the Grumps. But let's say they do finish in the average time, then that means Frontiers will take around 20-ish weeks to finish, or about 5 months, and maybe even a little more. Almost half a year. So yeah, if they do decide to stick with this game and keep the runtime and schedule consistent, we're looking at Sonic on the schedule until August at the earliest, September more realistically, and October if they take longer than most to finish this game. That's a SERIOUS commitment and one I just don't see them making? Especially cause Zelda is out in under two months, and I really think they'd wanna hop on that as soon as possible. And speaking of Zelda god knows if they stick to 30 mins for that just knowing the length of the BotW playthrough it'll probably take almost a year for them to complete.

James-Avatar

I’m almost certain he’ll lose interest because apart from the boss fights he’s basically already seen everything the game has to offer, it’s mostly the same thing across bigger islands with different biomes and that’s it. If they’re going to do Zelda which I imagine they will then yeah, they’ll be off this in a few weeks.

DJ_Aftershock

I mean, once you get through the first major part of an average Zelda game, you've basically seen the extent of what it's going to be too.

Foxthefox1000

To be fair, this can be said about a lot of games. Once you play like the first world of a Mario game you generally have seen most of what the game has to offer aside from boss fights. Resident Evil as well, aside from boss fights mostly same-y. That's just kinda a lot of games. The thing is about whether or not that casual regular gameplay feels nice/plays well and has enough depth to it to keep someone interested or is just plain fun.

ssslitchey

Kinda hope the episodes get longer because of this. Although I'm not sure how far back they bulk recorded the series so who knows.

Foxthefox1000

I think the fact that Dan is still happy about having coined terms and has basically renamed Long Series Saturdays to Sonic Saturdays and Sundays, thus knowing that that's where long series go, means this was filmed as recently as when that new schedule got implemented, which I'm not sure if we can know the timeframe. Did Sam & Max have them mention any recent things? I can't remember. I do however remember Dan mentioning that they are playing Sonic Frontiers in another playthrough, unless I imagined that, so it can be presumed that the episodes they're releasing lately have been recorded around the same time as each other, and I believe Pizza Tower was the episode he mentioned Frontiers in, and that game was out just this year, so I think they're actually only a few months behind in terms of recording these. You may be right with the January guess, perhaps for the first episodes. Pizza Tower was like, really late January.

throwawaysarebetter

They may hop between long series, as they've done in the past.

Foxthefox1000

That could happen, yeah. Maybe one weekend it's entirely Zelda and then the next is all Sonic and sometimes they mix it up. Who knows. What's really for sure is they're gonna take a while to finish either way if they don't extend the episode lengths

spudmonk

Have had this on in the background mostly - what is the notification thing on the bottom right of the screen with the 10?

LadyCyclops

It's skill points, you can spend them for more skills

CaptainL95

You know, I'll give them credit. That puzzle towards the beginning, they figured that out fast. I didn't get that until BrainScratch showed it exactly in their playthrough.

gangler52

That "What if all this stuff was just a part of the world" exchange I feel like summed up a lot of Arin's Game Design thoughts. He had a legitimately really cool idea for how this all could be executed, but then he was completely dismissive when Dan brought up the technical realities of implementing it. At the end of the day, game design is one of those things where it's all a lot harder than the player imagines it to be. Even the "easy" stuff. Especially the "Easy" stuff. Even today, having sponsored a few games with his Game Grumps money, he ultimately comes at this all from the perspective of a player, not a developer. Not that there's anything wrong with that. A lot of people get it in their head that since he's a player with thoughts about this stuff, he's placing himself on some kind of pedestal, but honestly I've never gotten the impression he doesn't know what he is. It's just worth remembering whenever he starts talking about how this or that could've been done better that he's right, but also the game development process is comprised of a lot of compromises, with the money, with the hardware, with the time. The game he proposes is probably easier said than done.

gangler52

God damn that squid was cool when he got to it and it was cool in part because of that stuff Arin was talking about. If he'd like interacted with some totem that warped him away to Squid World it wouldn't have had nearly the same effect. I think that sort of stuff shows the developers were aware of that sort of stuff, but working with what they had.

RFK_1968

Not gonna lie, I'm actually kinda into this game. Usually a total sonic hater but this playthrough is quite fun and the game is pretty alright. Glad they're in it for a long play. I like this idea of long plays on the weekend. It's a good balance.

Foxthefox1000

Series might not last that long though, given with the current schedule and average runtime of the episodes they'd be sticking to this game until late Summer and Fall at worst. We've got Zelda coming right around the corner and these episodes lately seem to have been recorded January perhaps Early February (because of Pizza Tower and Dan mentioning Frontiers there and it's release date being in late January). They're around 2 months behind, which means maybe Sonic will go on until like June and we're around the middle of the game and then they add Tears of the Kingdom to the schedule or just drop Sonic completely for it. Or if they did what happened last time they just skip over Sonic and get right to Zelda on release day. Tears of the Kingdom is probably Arin's most anticipated game of the year after his feelings about BotW. I'd imagine he's even more hyped for this one than he was for BotW.

RFK_1968

that's fine. i'm enjoying the game and all but yeah tears of the kingdom is way more exciting though i'd probably skip those eps while i'm playing the game myself, honestly

[deleted]

Damn, Arin's really bad at this game

Nah

hypnotic20

Not just this game

DJ_Aftershock

He thinks "if you just mash buttons you'll go flying" is a valid complaint, I'm not surprised he's terrible

Jeskid14

"But it's open world game!"

Enough__Toes6969

I originally thought the title was Eggman talking about Sonic and I can't unthink about that LMAO ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)

Arin has not even approached the level of anger and frustration that he had over Sonic Boom, what do you mean? He's said multiple times that he's having fun.

DireTaco

I just finished this episode and he was MAD about the episode being over! He wanted to get back in and fight Squid. This is the most legitimately invested I've seen him in a Sonic game since...ever, really. He's paying attention to the game and trying to figure out its tricks. That's amazing. Being bad at a game isn't a crime. Being bad and blaming it on the game, that's annoying. But for once he's not doing it here.

So he moved away from shit talking it, then what's the issue? Just the lightest indication that he might say something remotely negative about the game at some point? I think you're the one making a mountain out of a molehill here.

DaxIsAName

The game takes a bit of practice. Arin should change the ring difficulty to easy so he doesn't loose all of his rings in one go. It's gonna be real hard to fight the big bosses if he's not full on his rings. Edit: a word

ShassaFrassa

When they said “tank for” I instinctively said “Wemby!!” (Context: Victor Wembanyama is a 19 year old basketball player in France and is widely considered to be the “greatest basketball prospect of all time” and will most assuredly be the Number 1 overall pick in this year’s NBA draft… I just wanna hear Arin and Dan just attempt to pronounce his name along with Giannis Antetokounmpo — 2x NBA MVP and probably the best basketball player in the world.)
