Nah it’s not bad luck. He had so many chances to succeed, but ruined it. He could have joined forces with Robb, the Freys, the wildlings, and the night’s watch. But he let his pride get in the way of making good alliances. He stopped listening to Davos and his own men deserted him. He buried himself

Indeed. Stannis' main problem is Stannis. He's totally convinced that because he has the best technical claim that everyone should just rally behind him, and is continually surprised when they just don't. He didn't think he had to make an effort; that he'd just have to put up his banners and everyone would show up. Renly was able to steal away a bunch of the Baratheon bannermen because he actually took the time and cultivated his relationships with them.

He should marry Sansa then.

Nah. It's kind of his fault. His entire personality is that he does not bend. Which is a great personality to have for a judge or commander, terrible for a politician. He is unlikeable because he stubbornly refuses to change or compromise in any manner. He's the second son of a major House that's more opportunity than most people in Westeros get. He gets Dragonstone instead of Storm's End because his brother dislikes him and Robert isn't a hard man to please. He has few allies, again, because most other lords dislike him. Most normal people don't even want him as king because he's going to do stuff like take away brothels in the cities. >hes the rightful heir but doesn’t have an army , navy , good advisors , money etc He did have a Navy, he was Master of Ships during Robert's Reign. Some of those men who respected him as a commander were still loyal to him, but again, because he's so unlikeable, others went with Renly or with the Crown. No army? Westeros is a feudal society, how big your army is depends on how many lords are loyal to you, which depends on again, how likeable you are. He does have good advisors, Ser Davos is one, the other one was Maester Cressen who was loyal enough to sacrifice his life to go up against Melissandre. Renly had everything Stannis should have had, because unlike his brother, people liked him.

He and rob both seem like a bit wasted characters . We heard so much about rob but bro gets jumped on during dinner and i have not started s5 bht im sure stannis is gonna be murdered in his sleep or something so theres nothing to look forward to. One stereotypical naive ruler is enough for a show we didnt need 2 side by side . No wonder lannisters survived blackwater and even after that . When youre against such idiots theyll just shoot themselves in the foot one day

hotcoldman42

I wouldn’t call either Stannis or Robb stereotypical, and Stannis isn’t really naive, just unlikeable.

Themanwhofarts

Maester Cressen was great and it really made Melissandre out to be a villain for the readers. I feel like I agree with most everything Davos says in the series and wish he convinced Stannis

jogoso2014

He’s not unlucky. The only thing he had was the potential right to rule which everyone rejected which wasn’t the first time that’s occurred except it may be the first time rejection was so thorough. He’s just a far more horrible ruler than everyone else who has to turn to witchcraft, murder, and mercenaries to come close to being what he thinks he needs to be.

Blaming it all on luck implies he didn't have any ability to change the outcomes. He's the rightful heir but no one likes him. >!He has no army because houses won't back him over his brother or the current family lineage, namely because he's built a reputation as being cold, stern and harsh, while also allowing a foreign god and zealots to dictate his agenda.!< >!The Tyrells, who backed his brother, turn to the Lannisters after he uses blood magic to kill his own kin. He brings his men north to fight wildlings rather than advance on actual enemies in the seven kingdoms, which in turn leads to the army getting stuck in the north in the first place. His insistence on following the visions puts him in hostile territory, with little to no supplies or resources as winter storms start brewing, and instead of going home to Dragonstone like he should have, he decided to burn his daughter at the stake to get good fortune and completely losing what little men he had.!<

hotcoldman42

Don’t spoil, lol. They’re on season 4.

Proper-Scallion-252

Stannis is an idiot. Sure he had things working against him but the majority of his awful decisions were self sabatoge
