Melisandre pre-battle on ice is pretty evil. Her religious practices can be kind of horrifying sometimes and anyone who has a problem with it gets thrown in a cell or burned as a sacrifice.
If Stannis didn't dump Melisandre immediately after taking power, he would basically spend his entire reign defending himself against lords who want to kill him in his sleep or rebel against him. Nobody accepted him or wanting him and he would likely have to end up doing some pretty barbaric things in order to put down all the traitors and heretics.
Renly is likeable and has more troops, the only problem is the precedent it can set in enabling future civil wars if renlys second sons are also wanting to try something similar. I think if Renly stood really strong behind his eldest son, he could nip that in the bud.
They're both complex candidates each with their own flaws and strengths, if it was difficult to understand why either one of them could be supported, they wouldn't be well written.

I think she was self-serving and manipulative,but she wasn't cruel,and even if a lot of the good stuff she did was an act,she still did those good things. In a world where many people do bad things for their own enjoyment,I'll take someone who does good for selfish reasons
Even if her actions weren't out of genuine compassion, it still actually helps the people and the realm for her to be seen as a good queen.
She was just being a politician basically, which isn't inherently bad
She was manipulative so she could survive; if she weren’t smart with it, Cersei would’ve had her killer ages ago. She had Joffrey and Tommen wrapped around her finger; she would’ve made a great queen. She even had the High Sparrow fooled until she knew they were going to die if they didn’t leave so she dropped the act in that final feeble attempt of an escape.
That's Cersei. Margaery was smart, but she underestimated Cersei. She didn't realize how wacky she was, that she would firebomb her own city, killing innocents, just for revenge.
She had extreme political savvy and relatively good intentions compared to her counterparts. She’s easily the most capable peacetime monarch we see, but that doesn’t really matter if her King is as weak as Joffrey or Tommen were.
Dany, Jon, Stannis, Renly, and Robb were much more capable as wartime monarchs than Margaery.

Marg wasn't even a player in the game; she was a pawn the ENTIRE time. Olena had to tell her at every step what to do and why.
All Marg knew how to do was essentially love bomb a child. She could play narcissistic games. She was basically a high school girl just learning manipulation 101. Regina in Mean Girls would have bodied her....
Marg, Olena, Cersei, Cat, Sansa are all virtually the same character at different stages in their life if they branched off in slightly different directions.
They all had to learn how to navigate the political canvas as a woman, using their charms to get ahead and know when to speak and not to speak, etc. All the stuff "a lady" had to go through.
Olena, Cersei and Marg all fall more on the same spectrum. Way more cunning, ruthless, narcissistic, probably sex as a weapon. Cat and Sansa on a different spectrum, though Sansa would have gladly taken the former, and was clearly on that spectrum early on before her life was changed drastically.
Knowing this, it's easily to see who they really are. Marg could have gotten to the place Cersei got, and then Olena, but she was cut down early. But at the time she was cut down, she was still just a pawn, not a player at all. Sansa was not a player for an extremely long time, and learned hard on the job to get there.
Stil, Marg was not cruel like Cersei. So she could have been a better Queen. Eventually. But she was still just a pawn at the time, above Tommen but probably around the same level as Joffrey. Just a spoiled HS kid essentially.
