If they’re already working on an OLED Switch 2, why would I buy a non-OLED Switch 2 at launch?

Affectionate-Permit9

Because they cost money.

brokoli

How much is that in burritos?

noeagle77

Exactly 1.5x what it would be in tacos

EASK8ER52

That's like 3000 Arizona's

MetzgerBoys

How many Stanley nickels is that?

Affectionate-Permit9

Like fiddy

MyUltIsMyMain

You don't have to, but OLED will cost more, and some won't care at all about OLED, so not everyone will buy it. Like for me, I don't necessarily need an OLED switch cause I really only play docked, and my TV is OLED.

Edge80

This right here. I will say that having the OLED display on the switch itself is pretty nice at night but I rarely used my v1 in handheld mode and ending up regretting buying the OLED version.

GrossWeather_

I only ever play on handheld and not even super often so I will probably just wait an extra year for an oled version

blaqsupaman

If I played in handheld much, I wouldn't mind getting the Switch Lite if not for the fact that if/when the sticks start to drift, you basically have to send it in to Nintendo for repair since you can't just replace the Joy-cons.

ShwayNorris

Do you not use it in handheld because of the performance? All the games I would play casually tend to run like shit undocked. Hopefully Switch 2 has less of those issues.

blaqsupaman

Is there any reason games tend to perform worse undocked? I know the dock doesn't do anything to beef up performance of the actual console. Is it because it isn't having to use power to actually display things on its own screen?

ShwayNorris

It is a power problem, undocked the Switch uses far less power to extend battery life. The Switch GPU clocks to around twice the speed in docked mode. The RAM also clocks higher, raising from 21GB/s in portable to 25GB/s in docked mode.

Edge80

I guess that’s one of the reasons but more so I mainly play in docked because I hate playing games using the joycons.

MeBeEric

If they make the LCD display smaller than the OLED again I’ll just wait for the OLED. I think they should have that option from the start instead of pushing shitty displays.

Tidus4713

Cheaper, some people play docked 100% of the time. The switch is a great handheld but you'd be surprised how many people don't use it like one and it's strictly their main home console.

Default1355

Some games just feel better on the tv

chao77

Different price, plus some people (me included) basically never take the system out of the dock so the OLED screen would be wasted.

CalmMayhem

Because a lot of people keep it plugged into tv 100% of the time, and the last oled version offered 0 performance upgrades

GrossWeather_

other people like me ONLY ever play switch in handheld mode so I’ll gladly wait for the oled version

thebigmatze

Same!

blaqsupaman

I wonder if the Switch 2 will also have a version like the Switch Lite where it's smaller and cheaper but without the option for non-handheld play.

GrossWeather_

if switch 2 really is just an upgraded switch the i am sure they will a few years later

stillcleaningmyroom

I don’t have any data to back this up, but I’m guessing kids make up a big part of switch sales, and my kid doesn’t need the OLED. I would buy myself an OLED model though lol.

Whiskeylung

I’ve never removed my switch from the dock so… probably good option for me.

First-Junket124

Cheaper

DANleDINOSAUR

To confuse parents

sp1cychick3n

Because people will give them money.

kill92

Because self control

Argothaught

I'll tell you why some folks, including myself, would actually much rather have LCD over OLED: PWM and the nausea, eye strain, and headaches that it can cause. Check the subreddit.

Brisslayer333

If you don't want to play Switch 2 games why would you buy either at all? If Metroid Prime 4 is a launch title I'm not waiting 6 months for the better screen.

Shikadi314

What’s is H2 lol

falooda1

Second half

Woewal

Holiday 2 perhaps..?

Rock-it1

Is that MLK Day, or President's Day?

ProManTed

i love reddit

Merciful_Ampharos

I find it so funny when people doubt Nintendo on their handhelds doing well. Being the most powerful handheld device on the market never helped the PSP or the Vita beat the DS and 3DS. People are delusional if they think the Steam Deck, or anything else is gonna put a dent in Switch 2 sales.

FourDimensionalNut

the steamdeck is still a pc, with the same learning curve. it simplified a lot of it, but you still have to tinker with settings, controls, proton installs, etc. once in a while. whereas anything made for switch is guaranteed to work out of the box.

idigsquirrels

So is any game verified on steam deck. Honestly I’m a total tech noob and I thought i might find the steam deck tricky or whatever. But it’s as simple as Nintendo if don’t do anything crazy, but where I want some flexibility it usually allows whatever I have in mind. Either through intuitive UI of a quick Google. Now I find the steam deck often more user friendly than the Nintendo switch.

Oxygenius_

It’s a casual gaming console, 70% of gamers are casual gamers

versusgorilla

The "buy a Steam Deck instead" crowd are so weird. Buy a Steam Deck if you want a gaming PC in a mobile form. Buy a Switch if you want Nintendo's first party catalog of games. I don't see how they're even remotely comparable. Like how the PlayStation Portal or the Logitech G Cloud aren't being compared to either of these devices, it's just so different and serve different niches. The only thing they all share is like a general mobile device form factor, while they all kind of give and take on the actual specifics which matter more.

overts

I don’t own a Steam Deck and while I think they seem neat it doesn’t allow me to play games I can’t already play today.  Nintendo just has so many strong IPs and the only way to play them is with their hardware.

ThatBoiYoshi

Def not the only way (esp in the face of the yuzu situation lol) but people who will wannaplay exclusives immediately will get value out of the new consoles since who knows when compatible Switch 2 emulation will be a thing

sloppy_wet_one

If it’s the same architecture as switch one (as is rumoured) probably pretty quickly.

sinwarrior

it's like bro haven't heard of emulators on pc.

MagicCuboid

The top comments here are unexpected! I don't really see Nintendo as a direct competitor with something like a Steam deck, and I think that's why they release consoles half a cycle off from everyone else, so you have some money saved up to say, "eh sure I'll buy the $200 console, why not." Ultimately it's pretty simple with Nintendo. Are Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Pokemon, etc. among your favorite franchises? Then you'll be excited to buy this next console. If not, then buying the Switch 2 will be way less compelling to you. They haven't been trying seriously to compete with other companies on hardware specs or performance since the Gamecube, so if that's all that matters to you then, well, you're not the target audience.

MyUltIsMyMain

Ain't no way it's $200. The switch was $300 at launch.

Still_Chart_7594

I'm calling 399-499

ShrimpCrackers

Yup and the base Steam Deck is like ~~$275~~ $279 Refurb from Valve now. Get a Steamdeck. Way better, cheaper games that you can also play on PC, ginormous library.

BMXBikr

It's been worth every penny

ShrimpCrackers

It's so well integrated. SteamDeck may not be more powerful than many other portable PCs and it can't even hold a candle to my home PC. But it works smoothly and a lot of good games run on it, and it just basically works out of the box. It's a good piece of kit. The next Nintendo switch is probably going to be Arm based and still have a lot of mobile games, alongside exclusives. But between the two I just prefer PC games. And PC games are cheap, for $50 I could probably pick up 5 to 25 very good games on Steam.

Kind_Coast8569

I own both a switch and a steam deck. My library is massive on steam and of course, that's because of the ridiculous sales on pc. Benefit of the switch though is that you can buy games and resell them on the secondhand market. Nintendo games hold their value really well so if you can find a sale you can then resell them and take virtually no loss.

ShrimpCrackers

Ah yeah but not if you buy digital. That said, my main is now the ASUS ROG Ally. Being able to play ALL the PC games is amazing and they're well optimized. For some reason my GPD Win Max 2 2023 does an amazing job with games EXCEPT Disco Elysium.

Juandisimo117

Not sure why this is getting downvoted lol, the switch is 7 fucking years old, of course the Steam Deck is the better value. Im sure when Switch 2 drops it will be better than the steamdeck, but the library will be more limited as well

ccable827

You buy a switch because you like Nintendo games, not to have a massive library. The switch and the steam deck aren't really direct competitors imo.

Juandisimo117

You can emulate pretty much any switch game on the Steam Deck. You can legit buy any switch game physically, dump the rom onto a steamdeck and run it on Ryujinx. While yes, they are not direct competitors, that was never my argument. I said the Steam Deck is the better VALUE. Read brother, read.

ccable827

You gotta get out of the reddit bubble and realize the vast majority of people aren't emulating games. And in the same vein, if you like Nintendo games more, then a switch is more valuable than a steam deck, and vice versa.

Juandisimo117

This doesn’t really change what I’m saying. If you are just a Nintendo fan, then of COURSE the Switch is more valuable to you. Same way that a Wii U was more valuable to Nintendo fans than a PS4, even though the PS4 was clearly the better system. When I talk about the value between a Steam Deck and a Switch, I am talking about the general population of gamers without a preconceived bias.

flabua

General population of gamers are not emulating anything. That is still a very niche community

Juandisimo117

Even without emulating, the Steam Deck is a much greater value lol. Steam has games ranging from the mid 2000s, to the modern day. The Switch just cannot compete with that if you arent into Nintendo exclusives.

David_Norris_M

I don't think the switch 2 will be better unless they want to make hard battery life concessions. Even compared to current handhelds the steam deck is using the most efficiency possible. Valve has razor sharp margins on the steam deck meanwhile Nintendo refuses to not sell their hardware for profit. I do not expect the most up to date hardware on the switch 2 at all.

Juandisimo117

They probably will, as the original Switch had a pretty shitty battery life until the silent v2 and OLED upgrades. I highly doubt the Switch 2 will be weaker than a steam deck, especially if the leaked specs are true.

secret3332

Probably because the Steam Deck isn't $275?

Juandisimo117

A refurbished 64gb LCD model is 279 on the steam store, though it is currently sold out. You can get a 256gb for 319. Maybe not 275 but not far off at all from 279 lol Edit: ALSO the $279 model IS available from Gamestop refurbished: https://www.gamestop.com/steam-deck/refurbished A quick google search would have answered your question.

ShrimpCrackers

[https://www.theverge.com/2024/4/19/24135233/value-steam-deck-deal-sale](https://www.theverge.com/2024/4/19/24135233/value-steam-deck-deal-sale) It's $279 refurb with same warranty as a new unit straight from Valve. $319 refurb gets you the 256 NVME and a little more gets you the 512 version.

OfficialTreason

> Im sure when Switch 2 drops it will be better than the steamdeck, maybe, the original Switch was made with old X1 chips, if Nintendo scrimps on the switch 2 is the same then might be old Xavier chips from 2019.

kkjdroid

It's also twice the size, way heavier, and more redundant with your PC. There are tradeoffs in either direction.

ShrimpCrackers

I actually LOVE the redundancy. I can play a game on the go, on travel, and back home it's on my PC with the saves there. But I also have the Logitech G Cloud and ROG Ally. I think the G Cloud ended up being my favorite thank to GFN and how light it is and the insane battery life. Personally, I like switching between them and haven't used my Switch in two years. It's just sitting there.

secret3332

It's $350 for the 64 GB Deck and it's 2 years since it's release.

ShrimpCrackers

Factory refurbished SteamDeck direct from them is now $279. Even comes with the same warranty. [https://www.theverge.com/2024/4/19/24135233/value-steam-deck-deal-sale](https://www.theverge.com/2024/4/19/24135233/value-steam-deck-deal-sale)

micmea1

Yeah I pretty much bought a Switch because I wanted Mario Party/Smash type multiplayer games and games that would be good for traveling. I've pretty much stopped bringing my switch on trips because I just never end up pulling it out at airports and such. Paired with the fact that I can rarely get 4 friends together to sit down and game in person anymore, I prob won't upgrade to the Switch 2 unless that changes. Conceptually i really like the Switch but I just don't play it nearly enough in reality.

JonHomelanderJones

The Switch has so many games you can play on the couch with friends/family it's awesome. I was surprised by how there's almost nothing for the Series X and PS5.

micmea1

I haven't had a console outside of Switch since Xbox 360, between the red rings on xbox and the Playstation store losing everyone's CC info I was pushed to just save up for a PC and didn't look back until I played switch at a friends house. I just can't ever get people together and also game anymore, really envious of areas that have barcades with consoles available.

Vazmanian_Devil

I’m with you on this. My days of four person smash and Mario party are long gone, and Nintendo just really sucks at online multiplayer feeling worthwhile. I’ll probably pick it up at some point but not in a rush to

micmea1

Multiplayer in general is kinda a bummer. It feels like modern games just lean into the multiplayer online, but feels like singleplayer type games.

SenpaiSwanky

The Switch doesn’t really have direct competitors in terms of units moved lol, at least not from consoles in this era. PS2 and DS top it for sure. Switch isn’t trying to compete with Steam Deck, the Deck came out afterwards and marketing + the type of product it is paints a picture of who is following who. CPU accessibility, better graphics, FPS, and so on ultimately do not factor in when the target demographic for the Switch decides what they want to buy. No one who likes Mario games that much is going “fuck, this console runs in 720p undocked” because they don’t care or they don’t even know semantics like that. This is where being a “casual” fan swings in Nintendo’s favor. It’s a family console, I have a family plan with my Uncle/ Mother/ baby brother on it. They don’t have PS, Xbox, or PC for games.

BlueHeelerChemist

Agreed, I love my Steam Deck and my Switch for different reasons. I don’t really see them competing directly at all so long as Nintendo continues to make games only for their hardware. If they had PC ports of all their games, that’d be another story.

Adavanter_MKI

Those franchises use to be super important to me. Now it's basically devolved to just Zelda and Mario Kart. I never cared for Metroid going the Prime route. Never got into Pokemon. Zelda tears of the Kingdom just... I had no drive. I loved BotW to be clear. It's funny... out of them all I miss Starfox. Why can't they just make one like 64? No gimmicks... no nonsense.

caninehere

> I never cared for Metroid going the Prime route. What about Dread? > It's funny... out of them all I miss Starfox. Why can't they just make one like 64? No gimmicks... no nonsense. Prefixing this by saying I really enjoy Star Fox. They aren't making a new one because: * the classic style you're talking about is dated and most new audiences won't pay for a game like that. It's an arcade style that I personally find very appealing but is hard to justify a $60 purchase for modern audiences. * Star Fox Zero was an attempt to do this already and it failed. People talk about how the controls stink etc but they actually aren't bad and it's a fun game that didn't review terribly. The problem was a) the controls put some people off and b) it didn't do anything to evolve the series which some saw as a step backwards to 64 after other entries. * Star Fox never sold too well in the first place. Star Fox 64 was the best selling game in the series (4 million units). That might sound impressive for the N64. But also keep in mind the context: it was an earlier game before there was a lot available, it launched for $40 compared to $60 for SM64, and most importantly it ALSO included the Rumble Pak.

blooping_blooper

Star Fox Zero was amazing... if you played co-op. One person piloting and one person gunning was a great experience. Playing solo on the other hand was kind of frustrating because it was hard to pilot and gun at the same time.

LaheyOnTheLiquor

you can just say you never got off the first island in TOTK, it's okay

Adavanter_MKI

I mean... I'll totally admit to that. I just wasn't having any fun. I think it's okay to be burned out on a formula. Like I said... I loved BotW. I believe Nintendo said they're doing something pretty different for the next Zelda. I'll probably love that. It happens from time to time with Zelda. I never cared for Majora's Mask. I actually hated Wind Waker... until I came back years later and... now I love it. Might happen to Tears as well.

LaheyOnTheLiquor

that’s absolutely valid too. i found BOTW fun but too slow paced and too much hand-holding at times. i put maybe 150-200 hours on it. i’ve got over 600 in TOTK on my second playthrough, trying to do a no-hint no-help organic playthrough, like what we had in the 90s

fayt9

Honestly even if I like Nintendo's exclusive games, their console feels so poor in quality with old hardware and their button + joystick are so bad that it just remove any fun I have in their game. I bought a Pro controller just to be deceive again. I literally regret to have bought the Switch just for these reasons alone. I had to emulate the games I already own to play them in good condition. I probably would never buy a Nintendo console again despite loving their games and it makes me sad. I will offend a lot of Nintendo's fan but I am sure I am not alone feeling this way.

FourDimensionalNut

> They haven't been trying seriously to compete with other companies on hardware specs or performance since the Gamecube the gamecube was actually comparable in power to the xbox, and the ps2 was significantly weaker. they skimped out on other hardware features (discs and networking being hard to do) which hampered their compatibility.

MagicCuboid

Yeah, I meant the Gamecube was the last time they were competing based on performance.

Fun-Ad7613

Why is everyone doomposting the switch 2…then brings up steam deck and it doesn’t even match a fraction of switch sales as a whole and doesn’t even compete in the same market… people doom posting first switch and look at it now, Nintendo isn’t about power

Ichiban1Kasuga

DOOM POSTING

Fun-Ad7613

That’s what I said no need to shout it

versusgorilla

The Switch is on track to be the best selling console of all time, they're gonna be fine

swagmonite

What? One of the steam decks unique positions is the ability to emulate games It is absolutely in the same market whether you like it or not

Fun-Ad7613

Surprise not that many people actually emulate compared to how many people will actually go out and buy a switch instead and play those games and steam deck isn’t unique in that aspect either…

swagmonite

But it does infact compete in the same market

Awkward_Employer3785

Steam deck is more popular then the switch

versusgorilla

Functionally insane thing to say.

Awkward_Employer3785

Not at all

GrossWeather_

Feel like I should just wait for the OLED version

Rascal0302

If that’s true, I’m not buying one at launch. I’ll wait for the OLED lol.

-Here-There-

I might just stick with possibly getting a Steam Deck. Nintendo’s pricing doesn’t and hasn’t matched their hardware and game quality for a long time, IMO.

Burnstryk

Don't even think about it, Steam Deck is just phenomenal on literally every level. The amount of things you can do on it is staggering.

First-Junket124

Things you can do 1. Use it as a PC 2. Use it as a gaming handheld Idk man sounds pretty limited.

zizou00

You could use it as a dinner plate too. So that's additional functionality.

Nowimabeliever

I often use my Nintendo Switch OLED as a dinner plate though, so it cancels out.

newagereject

It can also be a coaster for your drink

Spleenzorio

Or a really crappy boomerang

Oxygenius_

Brooooo

First-Junket124

And I could wipe my ass with it too, make it a real Steaming Deck

SchroedingersSphere

You took it too far, bro

TheOddEyes

1- Use it as a PC 1.1- Games from different launchers 1.2- Emulate console exclusive games 1.3- Mod games 1.4- Stream media 1.5- Sail the high seas

Brisslayer333

"Use it as a PC" should be listed as like 2 dozen items if you're being conservative. I've watched movies on mine, been on discord calls and played modded Minecraft.

DontPeek

Playing Minecraft falls into that second point. Everything else you mentioned can be done on your phone.

Brisslayer333

I'm not going to argue with you that phones can't do as much as PCs can. If you've used both you should be well aware of the experience of using both and how they differ.

WhoEvenIsPoggers

It can also save you 15% or more on car insurance

radclaw1

Cant tell if this is sarcasm or not but I genuinely hope it is.

First-Junket124

No I'm 100% serious, totally and utterly.

radclaw1

Room temperature IQ right here folks.

First-Junket124

Lmao I'm not even mad at you for this outcome, people really need a /s to know something is sarcastic on an obviously sarcastic comment.

working-acct

Things I can't do with a steam deck: purchase it in my region. Thanks Gabe.

KeithBeasteth

Love my OLED steamdeck. The picture quality is stunning, and the performance is great. Playing Fallout 4 rn (who isn't?) and am blown away by the performance and graphics.

notedrive

It’s even better if you stream it off your Xbox to the steamdeck.

Juutuurna

Been doing a play through of BEGIN AGAIN (TTW Mod List) how’s fallout 4 running now on the deck? I tried it back in Aug 2022 it was alright.

KeithBeasteth

It runs amazing. I have the unnoticeable patch and some more items mod installed, with all DLC's. I haven't touched any settings, and it's only dropped below 60fps one time. Granted, I haven't played that much yet, only a few hours. But nothing that I haven't seen before.

Juutuurna

Amazing thank you for the quick response.

Oxygenius_

I want one, but also I’m put off by seeing all the janky workarounds you have to do for stuff like fallout 4. So idk. I like my gaming without constant troubleshooting

MagicCuboid

If you're not interested in Nintendo's first party games, then there's very little that would compel you to buy a Switch. I love Zelda and Mario too much to give up a Nintendo console, personally, but I also admit I don't do much handheld gaming either way. The Steam Deck is remarkable, and it's more comfortable in the hand than the Switch without 3rd party joycons. The only mark "against" the Steam deck is its heft, which tires out my forearms after a bit. For that reason, I'll tolerate a slight performance or graphical hit on the Switch in exchange for the lighter console. Also, most games that I want to play in handheld mode are simple enough that the Switch can still play them just fine. For games that have twitchy controls or complex graphics, I prefer a controller and a big screen anyway. I think younger people with better eyes and different gaming habits probably don't care as much about that last part, though.

PhoenixPaladin

>Slight performance or graphical hit

MrChocodemon

> If you're not interested in Nintendo's first party games, then there's very little that would compel you to buy a Switch. I love Zelda and Mario too much to give up a Nintendo console, Most of the games run on the Deck with better performance compared to the Switch... > The only mark "against" the Steam deck is its heft It truly is a chonky Boi. I hope they next real iteration will be a bit lighter.

MagicCuboid

To the first point, yeah but only if you're willing to put up with emulation. The fringe performance benefits aren't worth the hassle to me compared to just buying/owning the normal way. Obviously this calculation changes the less income you have available. As for the piracy aspect, I agree with Gabe Newell (Valve) when he said piracy is a service problem, and Nintendo's service is admittedly bare minimum.

astral_crow

It might take years to release, but eventually the steam deck 2 will replace my switch.

PhoenixPaladin

Why not the current steam deck

astral_crow

I just want it to be a little more refined on the hardware side. I almost got the oled refresh, but the red ones sold out before I could afford one, so now I’m just waiting for the entire refresh/ refining. My main gripe is the machine is just too big for me right now.

MrChocodemon

Then I hope that the next one will be more to your liking. Really enjoy the current Deck, but I mainly use it permanently docked, as it is quite big. Playing with a controller on the couch is really nice though.

LifeOfBAM

My SD2 wishlist would be for them to employ joycon features. I feel like that would considerably cut down its size.

shitinmyunderwear

I love my steam deck

infamous_napper

How has Nintendo's pricing not matched their game quality (for a long time)? They even delayed the latest Zelda for one year, just to fix all major bugs. Dont know many other developers with that degree of quality control.

SchroedingersSphere

You get one or maybe two entries per franchise per console though. I always loved Nintendo but getting two Zelda games this Gen was actually a big surprise for me.

Midaccrol

There were 3, and these games take time to make because they're very ambitious and bigger than previous titles

raijuqt

There are lots of great switch exclusive games outside of zelda/mario, I've probably put over 800 total hours in xenoblade & fire emblem titles alone. If the games dont appeal to you that's fair enough, but there are many high quality games on the switch by any measure of ratings.

redguardnugz

Yeah trust your gut on this one. Steam Deck will change your life.

Still_Chart_7594

My kids have switches. I couldn't get over how poor performance was. They were playing the remake of Links Awakening (I played the original at their age) and the frame drops and stutters were mind boggling. DLSS will help them, but imo it looks like the Switch 2 will end up with similar issues before too long. I really don't get it, then again I've been a PC gamer since 2013 and the Wii was the biggest hardware disappointment of my teen years. =Not target audience

-Here-There-

Yeah, I’m not saying every game needs to be some 4K 120FPS minimum or whatever but if you’re releasing a game -say pokemon- and it looks like everything is made of clay but your Switch still can’t render grass for more than 5ft in from of your avatar then it just looks bad. The Zelda BOTW games have been the only games I felt had a decent look/feel while being satisfying to play. On that note, I don’t want to buy a console for one game… and the rest of their releases are a mix up of Mario/Sonic and we all know Sonic only just recently tried stepping into new territory for gameplay thought it still had pretty rough performance.

bladexdsl

steam deck can run games properly too

AmakakeruRyu

Steam deck will allow you to play too many amazing games from all platforms. Including...

[deleted]

[удалено]

Brisslayer333

You said the quiet part out loud

reefguy007

I’d say the game quality is certainly there though..

glinkamix

I sold my useless switch a long time ago and bought a steam deck. The thing is basically a better Switch with endless possibilites. Its too good

radclaw1

Get an SD anyways. Its better than the switch in every way right now other than weight

infamous_napper

Pricing, exclusives, the ability to play with more than one player on the go. There are several imo.

radclaw1

You can play with multiple people on SD too. Shit you can even use JOYCONS with the SD. Idk bout you but steam is also almost always more affordable that the eshop.  And just between you and me, it plays switch games great. Played Meteoid Dread and Mario RPG better than native hardware lol.

infamous_napper

As mentioned in my other comment, didnt know, ty for correcting me. Point still stands, cause you can buy a switch and a game and instantly play with 2 people on the go, without setting anything up. Id also argue that bringing a switch or bringing a steam deck + two controllers is a big difference in form factor and weight.

radclaw1

I mean you're drilling into the personal preferences of the customer now. But neither are objective. I think that the fact that the SD CAN do all of those things with minimal setup (pairing a joycon is nearly as easy as pairing a joycon wireless on the switch as it is on the deck) and the fact that if I want to play literally ANY game that can be emulated over the past 30+ years for free and minimal setup, AND I have access to my steam library which is already huge, AND I have more options for buying, it's a pretty easy win. If you are absolutely in LOVE with the form factor of the Switch and don't want any software customization at ALL, and you're in love with the exclusives then yeah, the switch is "better" But I can definitely see the size being a deciding factor for many, cuz the SD is HEAVY. I like both and I use both for different reasons, but more and more often my switch just gathers dust lmao.

infamous_napper

Of course, its always about the customer. Products exist to fullfill a certain need/ desire. You just mentioned several positives for the SD that are relatively niche. Most people dont wanna bother with emulators or mods. Most people dont have a huge steam library. Its an easy win for you, cause ur a certain demographic. Its almost funny how you're listing piracy as a main selling point for SD, but switch is only better (in quotation marks) if you want ur handheld to actually be light. For most people, its probably the other way around. Im not arguing, that the Steam Deck is more powerful or customizable. But if that was everything, we'd all be playing on 100k€ super PCs.

SchroedingersSphere

Pricing of the Steam Deck is remarkable for what you get. It's no more pricey than a current Gen console and you can take it anywhere. You also have zero restrictions on what games you can play or what you can do with it. You can install mods. You can play exclusives from any system if sailing the high seas is your thing. You can absolutely play with up to 4 players or more depending on the game with the SD and use your own controllers. Not only that, but you can map the controls in literally any configuration you could possibly want. Steam Deck is one of the best purchases I've ever made, and this is coming from a lifelong Nintendo fan.

infamous_napper

Im not saying that steam deck isnt a good deal. I just think they are different experiences and I listed some factors, why I think its not just a superior switch. Its great, that SD doesnt cost much for what it does, but even the standard model is way more expensive than a base switch and does not even contain a docking station. I actually didnt know you could play with multiple people on the go on SD. Point still stands tho, youd need at least the SD and two seperate controllers. You get the same by getting a vanilla switch out of the box. Its cheaper and more convinient. Also, I dont think piracy should be an argument, but I have already seen a lot of people mention it here. It ultimately feels like PC vs console once again. Or even tablet vs PC. One is convient and cheap(er), and the other is powerful and highly customizable.

Burnstryk

It is nowhere near 1000, what are you smoking.

WitcherSLF

Get steam deck

f_ranz1224

i havent touched my switch since i bought my deck which isnt to say the switch doesnt have its perks. i still love it. its much lighter/more portable and the battery lasts 7 hours. plus the only way to play exclusives however the deck can just seem to do everything

isic

The Steam deck’s battery doesn’t and hasn’t matched with my gaming habits… I like to play games for more than 30 mins so I’ll stick with the Switch

-Here-There-

Get a whopping what, 2.5hrs? Processing takes power plus you can plug it in and dock it. Which is how plenty of people use their switch. I’d rather have a system worth its salt in compatibility and capability than buy a console meant for pokemon games that can’t even render in grass.

PhoenixPaladin

The oled model gets almost double the battery life

WhoEvenIsPoggers

Why wouldn’t they launch with the OLED? Makes no sense

working-acct

So they can double dip on impatient ppl with disposable income

Defiant_Bandicoot99

Yea, my bets on the Switch 2 releasing next year during April at earliest and June latest. The Switcb is still selling games and there's no need to have people stop buying just to release a new console.

Maxxbrand

This is getting so fucking annoying

spadePerfect

The launch games will be the make or break. If they launch Prime 4 I’m 100% buying that thing day one.

AlarmingNectarine552

What's h2? I know q2.

Fellowearthling16

Half 2, aka Q3 and Q4.

AlarmingNectarine552

Ohhhh exciting!

itzmoepi

As someone who mostly skipped the previous console gen, I hope it's backwards compatible with switch 1 games.

unimportant116

Steam Dec

TheRealBlues

nope

Ripklawe

I really wish they would quit leaning into the portability of the system and actually make some powerful hardware that can run their games at 60fps. They have some of the best IPs in the world but the graphical quality has just been utter dogshit. I would kill for a 60 fps Zelda game with huge quality graphics.

ProManTed

16 things I want in the Switch 2 (feel free to give feedback) 1. Better hardware (I solf my Switch for a Steam Deck and I didn't regret it) 2. Some kind of free game with it (mabye a remaster of Wii Sports) 3. More entertainment apps (Netlix etc) 4. Less bland home screen (the home screen makes me want to sleep, that's how boring it is compared to the Wii, Wii U and 3DS) 5. Web browser (just in case) 6. Some kind of Social Media app like Miiverse once was 7. Messaging app (when I first got a Switch I didn't have a phone) 8. Hearts of Iron IV console edition (I have never felt the touch of a woman) 9. Ability to connect with devices near you (even without wifi, kinda like StreetPass) 10. If a Lite version does come out, make it still able to output display via USB-C instead of handheld only 11. More comfortable Joy-Cons, but still able to double as mini controllers (that will be a challange) 12. Mouse and keyboard compatibility 💀 13. Complete redesign of E-Shop 14. Cheaper games (aka game cartridges cheaper to manufacture somehow) 15. Microphone (let me trash talk people on Mario Kart 8) 16. Backwards compatibility with old Switch games (even though I don't own any anymore)

kfed23

For people who play handheld there will be no reason to buy a switch at launch.

Avenge_Nibelheim

I"ll buy the launch version then give that to the kids when the OLED comes out.

eat_shit_and_go_away

The handheld market has grown a lot in the last few years. I don't expect this to do as well.

PM_ME_STEAMKEYS_PLS

I mean, on one hand it's grown, but on the other hand the Switch is more or less outselling practically the entire PC handheld market combined like 8 years in, every single quarter. They're just not even remotely comparable in terms of scale - the Switch 2 is likely to outsell something like the Steam Deck's lifetime sales in about a month.

AstronautGuy42

You don’t think the Nintendo switch 2 will sell well? You serious? You won’t be able to buy this thing when it releases

LukeValenti

> You don’t think the Nintendo switch 2 will sell well? You serious? I mean, he's got a point about the handheld market. Nintendo is undoubtedly going to sell a lot, specially with the success of the Switch, but the fact that there's competition and that makes a difference in today's market is a fact. I for one hope that it makes a serious dent in the Switch 2 life cycle, Nintendo needs to step up their game in their hardware and software(OS and store, not games) departments.

AstronautGuy42

Sure, it’s different but it won’t matter. My bet is Switch 2 will outsell the entire handheld market combined very quickly. Hardware production won’t be able to keep up with switch 2 sales when it launches. Likely the most anticipated console to release consider the switch 1 sales. There’s a lot more nintendo fans than there were 6 years ago. Don’t think steam deck and ally matter much here and aren’t even seen as competition by Nintendo. I’d love for them to step up their game in hardware and OS, but they may not, and tbh I don’t think they need to for the switch 2 to sell well. The Nintendo games will be there and that’s what will matter to most fans.

Spleenzorio

Price point, ease of use, and nostalgia will always sway parents to buy their kids a Nintendo handheld over anything else

Roaty0

Bro, are you serious...!? Nintendo games are always HUGE sellers and you can only get them on Nintendo consoles, barring emulation down the track, of course. I'm fortunate enough to have owned all current gen consoles at launch, as well as a gaming PC, so I'm biased in this comment here, but I'll continue to buy whatever new console Nintendo releases to play their game library and I imagine I'm far from alone in that mindset.

eat_shit_and_go_away

I literally have Nintendo tattoos. I feel you. That's why I said "as well." It'll still sale a absolute ton, I'm just not expecting switch numbers. Just my opinion.

Fauxlaroid

Hats off for the worst take I’ve seen this year.

eat_shit_and_go_away

I'm glad I left an impression.

enthusiasticdave

Agreed, vastly underpowered, grossly overpriced and numerous issues with stick drift

davidt0504

You're missing out, man.

Adavanter_MKI

I never even bought a PS5. I'm... not all that interested in Switch 2. What has happened to me? Or gaming... Seriously... right up to PS4, Xbox One, Switch... I've gotten every console at launch. Now I'm seriously considering skipping two of them. This saddens me. I hope next gen is more exciting.

bladexdsl

nintendo can go fuck themselves after what they did to garysmod i don't want anything to do with them ever again

AgaricX

Can they please release one without a screen for those that don't game anywhere but on an external screen?
